The cardio fitness class is a must in my routine. It has helped me stay healthy. I play cards and Mahjongg at the Center as well, and you just can’t beat those delicious lunches! It’s an honor to serve on the Heritage Committee where we discuss things to make each day better for all. The Heritage Center is an important part of the Jewish Community Center. To ensure that we can provide the best services to our participants, a nominal membership fee has been established. Individuals who currently have a senior single, senior couple or lifetime membership of The J automatically qualify for a Heritage Center membership without having to pay the $54 annual fee. While membership is not a requirement for participation, members receive many benefits. Cyber Monday. After we’ve all had time to appreciate what we have on Thanksgiving, a frenzy of holiday shopping begins – first there’s Black Friday followed by Cyber Monday online shopping. #GivingTuesday was initiated to shift the focus onto helping others. Ac. has explored the world looking for answers, and comes to us from 30 years of practicing Chinese acupuncture—and more recently—Japanese acupuncture. He studied Chinese herbology with Dr. Ted Kaptchuk, author of The Web that Has No Weaver, and currently a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Mr. Finney will present Chinese theories that relate our emotions to the health of various vital organs. He will also share his experience of using Japanese abdominal palpation and acupuncture on a schizophrenic, manic-depressive patient. Q&A to follow his presentation. As a benefit to Members of The J, those with a senior single or senior couple membership may attend these classes. All are free of charge to J Members (except Kinesis). Gentle Floor Yoga Cost: 1 punch Instructor: Varies Gentle Floor Yoga classes are designed to open the body, stretch and tone the muscles, increase innerawareness and also bring a sense of peace within. Zumba Gold Cost: 1 punch Instructor: Varies This is an invigorating dance-fitness class filled with a medley of dance styles including merengue, salsa, cha-cha, belly dance, tango, and more. One Hour Total Fit Cost: 1 punch Instructor: Christine Van Mol One Hour Total Fit is a conditioning class working on muscular strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. T’ai Chi Cost: 1 punch Instructor: Alan Karchmer Gain freedom from potential falls using basic movements to increase balance and flexibility. The class is easy to follow and beginners are not only welcomed, but encouraged. Kinesis Cost: 1 punch Instructor: Varies Kinesis has an emphasis on controlled movements that help promote muscle strength, balance, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas Mondays Wednesdays Fridays Cost: Free 2:00pm-5:00pm 9:00am-12:00pm 1:00pm-5:00pm Club Rm 3 Meet with a Medicare trained volunteer counselor to learn about Medicare benefits and enrollment processes. Volunteers will help explain how Medicare works on its own or with other insurance. Assistance with prescription coverage and supplemental insurance is also provided along with programs that may help you lower your Medicare costs. All SHICK volunteers are trained by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services and undergo background checks. Visits with a counselor will be available by appointment only on Monday and Friday afternoon in Club Room 3. Last year, over 300 friends and family members enjoyed over 250 pieces of art and ceramics! This event will be held in the Galleria at The J. The Jewish War Veterans will open the event with a posting of the colors, pledge of allegiance and real life stories. Following these presentations, dance or sing along to the music of multi-stylist harpist Michael Oshiver and musicians from Music Feeds the Soul (MFS) Orchestra. Light refreshments will be served. Donations accepted. We will also be accepting jars of peanut butter to contribute to the ‘Pass the Nut’ campaign which will donate more than a ton of peanut butter to local food pantries. Movie Matinee – Me Before You Monday, November 14 12:45pm Heritage Center Cost: Free 6 “Me Before You” follows Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) as she begins a new job that involves caring for a quadriplegic, Will Trainer (Sam Claflin), with whom she begins to form a bond. Once she discovers that Will is planning on committing assisted suicide in six months, she begins to create a schedule of activities and trips in hopes of changing his mind . As she works hard to reintroduce him to the world again, he also shows her a new side of life by pushing her to dream and enjoy a life that’s bigger than their small town. Doors open at 11:00am and the meal will be served at noon. Movie Matinee – Ithaca Monday, December 12 12:45pm Heritage Center Cost: Free It is 1942 and three years into World War II. Homer Macauley is a bicycle telegraph messenger in Ithaca. Although he is only fourteen years old, he has many goals and responsibilities. As his older sister, young brother and mother rely on him to be the family’s breadwinner, he struggles to prove that he is the best at his job and capable of taking care of his family. Follow Homer as he comes of age during a time when the world was in turmoil and people were desperate for the news he delivered even when it was not always hopeful. Be the first ones to celebrate when the “first” 12 o’clock arrives. We will provide the party favors, live entertainment and a champagne toast. Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation with a degree of chance as well. It is of Chinese origin, played by four persons with tiles resembling dominoes bearing various designs, which are drawn and discarded until one player wins with a hand designated on the card/ rules. Just as CHESS is a challenging game, its origin is a difficult puzzle. It has been written that the game of CHESS began in India around 600 C.E., then in Persia around 700 C.E. Whatever its origin, it has always been known as a game of Kings and of battles won and lost. New players of all ages and abilities are welcome and encouraged to attend.
