Year 2014
Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Graduation Ceremony
ITE CE ICT graduate, Quek Kai Yu graduated from TP and the Tay Eng Soon Award
was presented to him for the most outstanding graduate from ITE. On top of the Tay Eng
Soon Award, he also topped his course 'Diploma in Infocomm & Network Engineering'
and have gotten Microsoft Gold Medal, Flexlink Engineers Prize and VM Education Prize.
Another 2 of his classmates Lennon Koh Yinjie and Jonathan Pek Li Wei also graduated
with Lennon being awarded the Diploma with Merit too.

Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Graduation Ceremony 2014
Letchumi Naomi Jonathan graduated from the Diploma in Nursing on 27 May 2014 and
was awarded The Tay Eng Soon Award presented to the most outstanding graduate
from ITE. She was also presented with the Excellence Award in Academic & Community.

AcePLP James Tang Bursary Award 2014
AcePLP, an engineering company in Singapore, has given a he generous contribution to
help our students with bursaries.
A total of 20 students each from the Engineering courses in ITE College Central and iTE
College East received bursary award from AcePLP on 9 May. These bursaries were
given based on the student‟s good attendance in School and their family income. An
award ceremony and briefing on AcePLP program was held yesterday with Mr James
Tang, AcePLP, as GOH.

ST Electronics Security App Challenge 2014
Congratulations to Joel Chan and Ting Jia Geng from PK1304J, Higher Nitec in eBusiness Programming course has won a consolation award for the ST Electronics
Security App Challenge 2014.
Out of the three educational institutions, ITE CE was recognized in an award ceremony
held at ST Engineering Hub on 28th April 2014.
Gracing the event was Mr Jeremy Foo, President of ST Electronics (Info-Software
System) Pte Ltd and judges from HQ Guards, HQ Signals and 2 PDF.
The students have enjoyed a fruitful time talking with our fellow industry participants and
gaining valuable insights from them.
They have also been invited to present their project during the official opening of IDA
labs on 24th April 2014, showcasing their project to Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, as well
as other industry professionals.

Commencement Ceremony of YMCA-NUS Business School's Volunteer Service
Management Programme (VSMP)
Congratulations to CE's year-2 student Clement Chin for delivering an excellent speech
at the YMCA-NUS Business School Volunteer Service Management Program
Commencement Ceremony 2014. At the ceremony dinner, Clement also received his
Certificate for completing the program - jointly by NUS Business School and YMCA
Singapore - aimed at capability-building in the voluntary sector.
Each year, the VSMP program sees participants from Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes
volunteers undergo sessions of training, which includes management modules covering
planning, organizing, leading and control.
We are proud that our student is able to share the stage in sharing the benefits of this
inspiring program! Well done!

Youth for the Environment Day Carnival & National Youth Envirolympics
Challenge 2014, 18 - 19 Apr 2014
The Youth for the Environment Day (YED) is a key annual platform, in line with Earth
Day, engages the youth to champion environmental ownership and to renew their
commitment to care for the environment. The theme for YED this year is "Be Eco with
Me", with a focus on conservation.
The Guest-Of-Honour was Ms Grace Fu, 2nd Minister for the Env and Water Resources
and 2nd Minister for Foreign Affairs.
This year the YED Carnival was organized by Ci Yuan Community Centre Youth
Executive Committee, National Youth Environment Council (NYEC) and Tetra Pak which
was held from 18 to 19 April 2014 at *SCAPE in Orchard. The YED Carnival & NYEC
aims to encourage the youth to champion environmental ownership action and allow
them to know how they can be part of the green movement by being involved in 3Rs
practices through a myriad of activities.
Environmental Club students from ITE College East were involved in the following
activities over the 2 consecutive days:
1) Upcycling Competition Project name: Vermicology Irrigation System - Merit Award
Our Environmental club students took part in the Upcycling competition and won
themselves a Merit award for their project, Vermicology Irrigation System.
This upcycling project uses earthworms to create air passages through tunneling that
cultivate better plant growth. The system is made from recycled materials collected
from our school facilities. Recycled materials used are fruit peels and plastic bottles
(from School Canteen), canisters (from Cleaners), earthworm, dry leaves and soil
(from Garden), and old rubber mats (from Labs).

P/CE received, on behalf of ITE College East, the champion for the UBC collection
contest and the Castle Building participation certificate from NEA‟s CEO and Tetra
Pak‟s CEO respectiviely.
Comments by Environmental club students:
Mei Xuan: “Although it‟s very hot and tiring, I enjoyed it very much and I think that it‟s
very fun!”
Shafiqah: “I feel that I have learnt a lot and gained a lot of experience from this event
and I definitely enjoyed it. I hope to participate in more events in future!”
Marcus: “ I learnt how to co-operate and work with one another!”
Jenna: “ I enjoyed the whole event even though it was a bit hot!”
2) Tetra Pak Craft Workshop
Our Environmental Club staff, Mdm Saadiah and Mdm Lim Juat Fong together with
students conducted a workshop for the public on creating butterflies and flowers
craftwork using recycled beverage cartons as decorations for the castle as well as the
pledge tree and recycled bins.

3) Building of the a large "Record-breaking Castle"
Our students helped in collecting and washing of used beverage cartons over the
past 1 month prior to the event and participated in the building of the record-breaking
castle using 80 000 used beverage cartons over 3 consecutive days.
This structure was awarded the Singapore Book of Records certificate during the
event which was launched by Guest of Honour, Ms Grace Fu who placed in the last
piece of used beverage carton to complete the whole castle structure. There to
witness and support the event were members of ECO@CE, Mr Mervyn Teo, Ms
Karen Loh, Mdm Saadiah and Mdm Lim Juat Fong together with 30 Environmental
Club students.

Home Awards Presentation Ceremony
A total of 5 students from ITE received the Home Awards on 14 Apr 2014 from Mr S
Iswaran, MInister, Prime Minister‟s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs & Second
Minister for Trade & Industry, at the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning.
Of these, 2 of the students are from ITE College East.
They are Nazwayne Bin Abidin and Muhammad Syahir Bin Hishamuddin from Higher
NITEC in Paramedic & Emergency Care.

Congratulations to Daryl Agne from AHS Opticianry!
His logo was one of the two chosen from ITE for the Finals!
Daryl will be attending a Tea Session with Ms Indranee Rajah (Senior Minister of State,
Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education) on 7 Apr 14.

Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2014
The competition had come to a close on 22 March 2014 and against other teams from
various secondary schools, IP, Junior Colleges and other ITE Colleges, Mr Arthur L
Pedida and his team of students (Dino Lim Shi Hong and Muhammad Hilman Bin
Ramlan) had won the Best Creativity Gold award in the Singapore Amazing Flying
Machine Competition 2014. See photos.
HYC-PSA Recipients 2014
Congratulations to 6 CE students who have been selected to receive the prestigious
Howe Yoon Chong-PSA Scholarship.
Each student will receive a monthly allowance of $300 + an annual book allowance
of $200, in addition to support for tuition and other compulsory fees.

Green Wave Environmental Care Competition
The Annual Green Wave Environmental Care Competition was organised by
Sembawang Shipyard.
This is an annual nation-wide competition for schools and tertiary institutions in
Singapore.
In 2013, there were a total of 270 projects received and a high level of participation
from 1100 students. A total of 47 awards were presented at the award presentation
ceremony at Marina Mandarin, Singapore.
Mr. Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Senior
Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, was the Guest-ofHonour.

CE Student secured a place at SMU
Lee Ming Yang Derrick graduated with a Higher Nitec in Information Technology in
March 2012 as a Course Medalist. During his stint with ITE College East, he led the
school team in winning a number of National InfoComm Competitions: 1st prize at
Innovate IT (2011, organized by SMU), 3rd prize at XSite (2011, organized by
Singapore Science Centre) as well as 2nd runner-up at National InfoComm
Competition's Overall Championship (2012, POLY/ITE circuit, organized by IDA).
Derrick was then enrolled into Nanyang Polytechnic as a direct 2nd-year student
(Dean's List). He has now secured a place at Singapore Management University
(School of Information Systems).
CE Students featured on National Climate Change Newsletter Jan 2014
CE students are currently featured in January 2014's edition of National Climate
Change Secretariat's newsletter (link below). The student team from HNitec
Information Technology shares the limelight with all other categories of 1st prize
winners of NCCS Video / Animation Competition - to bring to public readers tips and
know-hows on how to strive towards environmental protection and conservation.

Yayasan MENDAKI awards

Singapore Polytechnic's Project Nepal
Kelvin Tan, Nitec/CPT (Grad 2010) was recently mentioned in PM's NDR speech for
his participation as co-leader in SP's Project Nepal (see LHZB 19 Aug pg 12 for
details). He was CE President of Student Ambassadors, and awarded in ITE the
CCA Medal, Arts Excellence Award, LKY CCA Award, NYAA Gold award, and Lee
Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (LKY-STEP). Well done Kelvin and
we wish him well in his final year studies in SP.
Service Excellence Award
Our recently graduated PEC student, Chok Teng Han, was recently been recognized
for his brave act to put out a fire during his ambulance attachment. He received a
Service Excellence Award from Singapore Civil Defence Force in recognition for his
brave act.
1st Global Student Entrepreneur Award organised by Entrepreneur
Organisation (EO)
Yu Kim Reed, an April 2013 graduate of ITE College East has been selected by EO
to be interviewed on live radio 93.8FM on 5 August 13. He will be sharing his
experience as a student-entrepreneur and his hopes on clinching the Global Student
Entrepreneur Award. Reed was already running his own business during his College
days and he represented ITE and Singapore at the 3rd Malaysia International Youth
Programme 25-31 May 2011.
Inter-school Debate and Best Speaker Award for the competition at Nanyang
Polytechnic
ITE College East congratulates Prabhmeet Kaur on winning the Inter-school Debate
and the Best Speaker Award for the competition at Nanyang Polytechnic. Prabhmeet
was the Vice-President of the Student Ambassadors and a recent graduate from the
Higher Nitec in Biotechnology programme at ITE College East. She is currently
pursuing a Diploma in Mass Media Management at Nanyang Polytechnic.
Everyday Action Art Exhibition
Our alumnus, Leong Tung Seng‟s (Nitec in Mechanical Technology, 2012), artwork

Republic Polytechnic Graduation
Our CE alumnus, Chia Wei Meng Alexander (Higher Nitec in Information Technology,
2007), Chang Jun Da (Higher Nitec in Network Security Technology, 2010), Eng Pui
Boon (Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Sport Management), 2010) and Nur
Nazihah Bte Jaffri (Higher Nitec in Biotechnology, 2010) have done exceptionally
well amongst their peers in RP recent graduation. Chia Wei Ming Alexander clinched
RP's Lee Kuan Yew Award for Maths and Science at RP Graduation Ceremony on
28 May 2013. Alexander and Jun Da also received Module Prizes which are given to
students who have achieved the highest score in their modules. Pui Boon and
Nazihah were presented with the Meritorious Gold Award for their excellent
performance in their CCA- Dragonboat. CE graduate, Rina Chia was mentioned in
GOH Minister Tan Chuan Jin's speech for her effort and contribution. Congrats to all
our ITE graduates who completed their studies in RP!!

Eng Soon Gold Medal, Singapore Nurses Association Silver Medal & Prize as well

A*STAR Scholarship
Stephanie Tay graduated with a Higher Nitec in Biochemical Technology in 2010.
She joined the Republic Polytechnic (RP) after her graduation from ITE. On 16 July
2013, Stephanie graduated with one of the top awards in RP and was awarded a ASTAR scholarship. Her keen interest in Biology inspired her to undergo a research
attachment at A*STAR‟s Bioprocessing Technology Institute (BTI) as part of the
A*STAR Science Award (Polytechnic). Said Stephanie, “When an idea is generated
into theory and then performed practically, showing positive results which are
reproducible, the immense satisfaction ignites my passion for Science and this is
what motivates me to continue down the path of research.” As an A*STAR
Undergraduate Scholarship awardee, Stephanie hopes to delve deeper into
Microbiology and its applications to Green Technology, and will start on her path
towards a research career by pursuing her undergraduate studies at NTU. Read the

Republic Polytechnic Freshmen Scholarship
Congratulations to our CE graduates, Ms Goh Qiu Tong, Higher Nitec in Business
Studies (Administration/Secretarial), Ms Nuraini Bte Ibrahim, (Higher Nitec in
Business Studies (Sport Management) and Ms Angelina Marie Seet Hui Lynn
(Higher Nitec in Beauty & Spa Management) who will be receiving the RP Freshmen
Scholarship on 5 July 2013.
HSBC/NYAA Earthwatch Scientific Research Project in Nova Scotia, Canada
Congratulations to our CE alumnus, Mr Muhammad Muhajir Bin Abu Nawan, Nitec in
Digital Audio Video Production who was selected by NYAA Council to travel with the
HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award winners to Nova Scotia, Canada from 27
July to 2 August 2013 for the HSBC/NYAA Earthwatch Scientific Research
Project. Mr Muhammad Muhajir will be responsible for capturing the day-to-day
activities of the project through his lens. The NYAA Council selected him for his
photography/videography skills as they were very impressed with his work at ITE
College East and Temasek Polytechnic. NYAA Council will be providing him a full
sponsorship to Canada as part of the HSBC/NYAA Earthwatch Research Project
Team in Canada.
Singapore Polytechnic Scholarship Awards 2013
Congratulations to our graduate, Ms Poh Si Qing (Higher Nitec in Integrated
Logistics Management Apr 2011 - Mar 2013) who will be receiving the SP
Scholarship Awards on Wednesday, 3 July 2013. The SP scholarship and SP
Engineering Scholarship are awarded to SP students with outstanding GCE „O‟
levels or SP academic results. The Sports, Arts & Music Scholarship is awarded to
student with outstanding achievements in those areas.
Nanyang Polytechnic Graduation
Congratulations to our graduate, Ms Ong Teng Teng, Nitec in Nursing (2008 - 2010),
who was awarded the Tay Eng Soon Award, with a Diploma in Nursing from
Nanyang Polytechnic. She was also awarded the Ministry of Health Gold Medal and
Singapore Nurses Association Award for Clinical Education in Nursing.
The Business Times Budding Artist Fund
CE alumnus, Chloe Wong Yi Ying, Nitec in Community Care and Social Services
was selected for the 3 year sponsorship under The Business Times Budding Artist
Fund last year. She has again aced her peers from "The Little Arts Academy" and
her painting (Picture of the Ape) was selected for the publicity poster of the
upcoming Art Exhibition.
Bhaskar’s Arts Academy
Shivani, from JP1204R, Dual Certification in NITEC in Nursing and Higher Nitec in
Paramedic & Emergency Care student has represented the Bhaskar's Arts Academy
for a dance performance in Wellington, New Zealand as part of a Diwali Festival.
As the core dancer in a dance repertoire, she was the main highlight of the dance,
which unfolded the story of a lady that was separated from her husband.
She had the privilege of performing in front of an audience, which comprises of officials from
both New Zealand and Singapore Embassy.
The great exposure and learning journey would help her in honing her skills and all
that was made possible because of the help offered.
Shivani has made ITE & Singapore proud.

Jagsport International Judo Tournament
Congratulations to Indra Syahirul B Mohd Suhaime from Sport Management
(UP1204Q), Nur Aqeela Bte Noor Hussain from Chemical process technology
(JC1204V) and Lim Teck Leong Melvin from Accounting (UP1204Q) on their recent
silver medal in the team event at the yearly Jagsport International Judo tournament,
held at the Singapore Judo Federation, 24th of November 2013, Sunday.
CE defeated NYJC and RP before losing out to an Indonesian University team in the
final.
Well done to all the 12 participants of the ITE College East Judo team that took part
in the event over the weekend.

Top Fundraisers for Charity Soccer Match
The prize presentation for the top fundraisers for the Charity Soccer Match was held
on 25 Nov 2013 at LT2 at 3.00pm during the Principal's Networking Session.
Congratulations to the top prize winner, Ng Wei Jie from PL1301C, who won an iPad
Mini.
Coming in the 2nd to 5th place are Shirley Lee Xue Li from JB1304C, Nur'Huda Bte

Banana Song Contest
Bryan Lim, from UA1204P won the Banana Song Contest on 22 Nov 2013.
This contest was to promote the Movie Screening of “Despicable Me” at CE.
They were judged according to their creativity in their dance steps and actions.

National Climate Change Competition 2013
Our CE student, Clement Chin from Higher NITEC in Information Technology went
on Live Television on Good Morning Singapore ( 早安您好) on 19th November,
7:55am, Channel 8!
He represents his team who won 1st prize from Institutes of Higher Learning
category of the National Climate Change Competition 2013.
He talked and shared about their animation entry 'Growing Good Habits'!!

SAFE Project 2013
The Security Awareness For Everyone (SAFE) is an initiative by the Ministry of
Home Affairs (MHA) to get students to come up with innovative solutions to solve
safety and security problems in Singapore. The programme is open to Primary,
Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions (ITEs/Polytechnics). Started in 2009, the
aim of the programme is to promote safety and security awareness amongst youths,
and also serves as a platform for students to co-create safety and security solutions
with the Home Team.
Out of 38 projects being submitted by ITE CE, the following 4 projects received Merit
Awards under the ITE College Category and were showcased at the Home Team
Festival on the 8 - 10 November at the Singapore Expo.

Annual SCS Splash Awards Finals
Our students from Nitec/Info-comm Technology has done well on 20 Sep 2013. They are
the only team from ITE to compete other polytechnics for the top spot in the annual SCS
Splash Awards Finals. Although they are unable to emerge as the top 3 winners, the judges
are very impressed with their articulation and have presented them with an Honorary
Mention Award.
National School Eco-Friendly & Creative Lantern Making Competition 2013
2 MET student teams won top prizes (Cat A-Poly/JC/ITE) in National School EcoFriendly & Creative Lantern Making Competition 2013 organised in conjunction with

Science Buskers Festival 2013
The Science Buskers Festival 2013 Finals was held on 27 and 28 July 2013. Our
students from the School of Electronics and Information Technology (SEIT) Network
Security Technology (NST) - Jeffery Ler, M Sahesh and Sabrina Kamsani came in
as the 1st prize (Champion) for the online international open category. The Science
Buskers Lite - an online competition which is open to all including international
participants.
The Holistic & Wellness Club is proud to announce our "The Best Sensation" Team
have won Champions Title of the Open Category at the Singapore Science Buskers
Festival 2013. This is the first time ITE Nursing students, Linkeswary D/O
Thangaraju, Ananthi D/O Rajoo Padmanabhan, have taken part at the Science
Buskers Festival and the not only are they the Champions but also took home, The

Cheer O Mania 2013
ITE CE‟s official Cheerleading team, Team DynamITE, has won the Bronze Award in
the Seniors Category at the Singapore Kindness Movement‟s Cheer-„O‟-Mania
Competition 2013. Newly formed in January 2013, and consisting of experienced
seniors and many enthusiastic juniors, this is the team‟s first win in a national
competition.
The competition was held on Saturday, 13 July 2013 at United Square Shopping
Centre and the team‟s performance revolved around the recent haze crisis in
Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia and the ways in which the crisis brought out the
best in us as a nation, highlighting the social care and responsibility everyone has
towards friends and neighbours (both next door and beyond our shores).
Inter-Institutions Dikir Barat Competition
Congratulations to our very own "Tok Juara" Nur Hidayat Bin Zainal (Higher Nitec in
Business Information Systems) from ITE-CE Dikir Barat Club, Sri Tri Buana on his
win during the Inter-Institutions Dikir Barat Competition on Sunday 7 July 2013.
For this year's competition, ITE-CE sent two teams - Sri Tri Buana (male team) and
Sutera Madura (female team). Hidayat sang melodiously to the hearts of the judges
and won the Bronze award for the Best Tok Juara. "Tok Juara" - is the first lead
singer of the group. Hidayat was also in the top three places during the InterInstitutions Dikir Barat Competition last year.
WorldSkills Singapore 2013
For the second time, an ITE competitor has won a Gold Medal at the WorldSkills
Competition. She is Catherine Boey Xiao Wei, who competed in the Beauty Therapy
skills category. This is a consecutive win in this category for Singapore and ITE, with
the first Gold Medal won at WorldSkills London 2011.

‘Safety Starts with Me’ Competition
Our ITE students (HNitec Info-T/CE) who recently participated in the National
Competition 'Safety Starts with Me' 2013 have done us proud! Participating under
the Open category for 'Short Film and Animation', the team were awarded the
Consolation prize as well as SGD 1000 for their animation work called 'The

Innovate IT 2013 Competition
We are glad to announce that our SEIT students from Nitec in Info-Communications
Technology have made us proud on 27 April 2013 by finishing second in the highly
competitive Innovate IT competition (http://innovateit.smu.edu.sg/) organised by
Singapore Management University.
A total of 48 teams from Polytechnic, JCs and ITEs took part in the competition. The
leader of the team, Seah Cong Hern Finn, was also selected as the Best Speaker of
the competition. Another team from Nitec in Info-Communication Technology also
qualified for the final round (Top 10).

Cool Ideas For Better HDB Living Competition 2013
The competition was open to all Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and ITE. The event
was held on 16th March 2013 at the NUS from 8am to 6pm, and a total of 64 teams
participated. Our MET/CE team‟s project “Water Saving Device” emerged as one of
the top 10 teams and was awarded a cash prize of $500 and a chance to compete in
the final stage. The guest-of-honor for the event is Senior Minister of State for Trade
and Industry and National Development, Mr Lee Yi Shyan.

Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2013 - Best Aesthetic Award
(Bronze)
The Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2013 is the largest flying
machine competition in Singapore and the nationwide hunt for a flying wonder. This
competition is organized by DSO National Laboratories and Science Centre
Singapore. The competition was held from 11 March 2013 to 23 March 2013 in the
Annex Hall in Science Centre Singapore.
All participating teams will work on the different aspects of the competition, the
Challenge and the Presentation. For the Challenge, the teams are to design, build
and fly their flying machines to overcome different challenges for different categories
of the SAFMC events. For the Presentation, besides building the flying machine, the
teams are to present their flying machine design and their learning journey in this
competition to a panel of judges.
ITE College East sent 1 team in Category C (JC/ITE) of the competition. The teams
were led by team managers M,s Jolene Chan from SEIT, and have managed to
achieve 1 medal from the competition - Best Aesthetic Award (Bronze) . They were
presented in the Award Presentation Ceremony on 23 March 2013.

Planning a Clean & Green Waterfront- Iskandar Model Building
2 teams from ITE College East (from EC including Env Club, led by Ms May Lim and
Karen Loh) participated in Planning a Clean & Green Waterfront- Iskandar Model
Building. One of the teams - GPA 4 won the Best Advocacy Award. Congratulations!

Sembawang Shipyard's Green Wave Environment Competition 2012
The Green Wave Environmental Competition 2012 award ceremony was held in the
morning of Thursday 28 Feb 2013. Congratulations to all winners and this group of
students from ITE College East who won the Commendation Award.

Project Summary
The project is a simple invention to control a household faucet
tap which consist of a circular ring fastened at the tap as
shown. It comes in two semi-circle rings for fastening ; and a
bolt to create constraint the handle movement in turn
regulating the flow. By adjusting the height of the bolt, flowrate varies.
The design simplicity offers the most significant selling points
to the consumers ie low-cost, DIY nature and durability that
set to beat most of exisitng products. The gadget is ideal for
household with domestic maid and kids who are water
consumers. Tenant market is another potential target group to
clamp down landlord waterbill.

Now You Can Leadership Series (Season 2)
Congratulations to Wong Kai Chong, Michaella,Yee Hui Ping,Tan Teng Yang and
Nur Farhanah from Nitec in Info-Communications Technology for winning the runnerup prize (Technology for Good Category) from Now You Can Leadership Series
(Season 2) competition organised by Starhub, Grid MMS Pte Ltd and *SCAPE. The
team presented their idea and developed a prototype that will help people to find
pathways for wheelchair-bound with ease. The application will identify routes with
ramps or smooth pavements within a certain area.
IBM Student Innovator Challenge 2012
Congratulations to Noel Tan and Iwan Kurniawan from Nitec in Info-Communications
Technology for winning the runner-up prize in the IBM Student Innovator Challenge
2012 with close to 100 entries from tertiary institutions. This challenge aims to
encourage students to come up with innovative ideas in the fields of Mobile, Smarter
Analytics, Social Business and Smarter Commerce. Their idea Smart Traffic
Analytics Reporting System or STARS sought to ease the pain of driving in
Singapore with a traffic analytics smart system that uses magnetic road sensors and
controls the traffic lights and pedestrian-operated crossing lights in an intelligent way
for a smoother traffic.

Our nursing team "WEERO HEERO' from JP1104R emerged as winners, under
the Technology for Good theme. Their project ideas involve setting up timeroperated LED lights outside each patient's cubicle to alert nurses on duty to rotate
immobile patients regularly.
Runner up - Urgent Matter team's apps for wheelchair friendly routes
Students (Wong Kai Chong,Michaella,Yee Hui Ping,Tan Teng Yang,Nur Farhanah)
from Nitec in Info-Communications Technology won the runner-up prize
(Technology for Good Category). The team presented their idea and developed a
prototype that will help people to find pathways for wheelchair-bound with ease.
The application will identify routes with ramps or smooth pavements within a
certain area.

CEMTA Dancers at 21 Century Dance Festival in Malaysia
Our team of CeMTA dancers recently returned from the 21st Century International
Arts Festival 2011 Dance Competition held in Genting, Malaysia from 21 to 25 Nov.
The dance we presented, "Hei Ho" highlighted the unity of our multi-ethnic groups.
The team competed in the Open category and met strong competition from the
Philippines (Shirley Halili-Cruz Ballet Company) and Malaysia (represented by Heng
Yi Cultural dance troupe and 6 Performing Arts groups from the Universiti Teknologi
Petronas). Our team won a Silver award. Amongst the 14 ITE team members were 2
CE students: ALAN TAY/Bio Tech and YONG MEI LIEN/Beauty & Spa management.

The winners of the Shell LiveWIRE Awards were announced at the Awards
Ceremony on Fri, 18 November at ITE College East. Job Goh Tze Shiun, from
Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Sport Management), ITE College East, was one of
the merit winners for the Shell LiveSPARK Post-Secondary Category.
World Orchid Conference, World Orchid Show, 11 and 12 November
ITE College East (CE) was runner-up at the 20th World Orchid Conference World
Orchid Show under the category of Society and Amatuer display. CE also bagged
2nd prize for the orchids, namely the Dendrobium hybrid in Class 95 and
Doritaenopis hybrid in class 61, and 3rd prize for Phalaenopsis in class 42.

ITE College East students from the ITE‟s Singapore Nurses Association (SNA)

The SINDA Excellence Award, 3 September
This is the highest honour bestowed by SINDA on Indian students who have

National Day Parade 2011, 9 August
69 students and 10 staff from Nitec in Hair Services supported National Day Parade
(NDP) 2011 at national level to provide hairstyling services to NDP performers during
rehearsals over the weekends and on National Day, 9 August 2011. The 2.5 months
of involvement commenced in June 2011 and ended on 9 August 2011. The total
value of contribution, largely in terms of man hours of staff and students, was
$29,150.

Dominic Ong, a student from Higher Nitec in Information Technology won the
Championship trophy for Animania 2011 (Digital Manga Art, Open Category). The
competition is a creative media competition (www.animania.com.sg) organised by
CreativeBITS. He received the award on 19 July 2011.
HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award 2011, 19 July
Brandon Chia Zheng Da, a year two student from the Nitec in Nursing course who
has been selected by HSBC and NYAA Council as one of the four outstanding
youths who are passionate and have played a leadership role in protecting our
environment for the HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award 2011. He received the
award on 19 July 2011 which includes a fully sponsored trip to the China Regional
Climate Centre in Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China in August 2011 and
will be joining Chinese scientists, Dr Kequan Pei and Dr Haibao Ren in their
research programme on vital climate change.

'Safety Starts With Me 2011' Competition
A team of Information Technology students from ITE College East won the
consolation prize for their video entry in the Open category of 'Safety Starts With Me
2011' Competition organised by The Workplace Safety and Health Council.
Our ex-Students, Tan Wee Hao achieved Diploma in Business Computing with Merit
and Toh Wei Quan achieved Diploma in Environmental Science with Merit, Tay
Eng Soon Gold Medal Winner, Diploma Award Winner as well as the Module
Award at the Republlic Polytechnic Graduation Ceremony 2011.
The New Paper First Film Fest 2011, 13 March
Our ex-Student, Mickey Ng Guo Rong was awarded a second runner up in the The
New Paper First Film Fest 2011 for his entry "The Last Job" as the Editor and Post
Production Director. The New Paper First Film Fest, launched last December, was
open to young film makers who are 35 and below, which attracted 160 entries.
Judged by the media industry such as Irene Ang from Fly Entertainment, Jack Neo,
Golden Village's General Manager Maria Lorenzo and Nightlife Mogul Dennis Foo,
Mickey's entry was praised for it's outstanding stunt sequences.

Muhammad Harithzan Bin Jantan won the Skills Challenge in the first Manchester
United Residential Camp held in Singapore from 3 to 5 December 2010. The camp
witnessed 40 international participants, housed at CE International Hall, learning
soccer skills through the Manchester United way. The camp was led by 3 soccer
coaches from Manchester, UK.

Hairdressing at the 8th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) held from 19 to 21

Sabrina Bte Abdullah, a final year Digital Audio and Video Production CE student
has been selected for the The Apprenticeship Programme (TAP) organised by
Noise Singapore: a youth arts festival organised by National Arts Council on 28 Oct
2010. For 10 weeks starting October 2010, Sabrina will be taken under the wing of
her mentor and renowned local photographer Sha Ying.
ITE College East emerged 2nd Runner-up in the 1st NTU Inter-tertiary Weiqi
Youth League, Junior Category held on 22 and 23 Oct at NTU. Congratulations to
Mohammad Taufeek , Lee Ming Chuan, Jeffery Choo (Team captain), Chen Ming
Hong, Shen Xiangrui and Ow Kean Weng.
15 College East students received the Bestari Award 2010 during the Bestari Award
ceremony which was held on 21 Oct 2010 at ITE. ITE College East students have
done remarkably well in this year‟s Bestari Award. Three students from ITE College
East emerged in the top four positions and were shortlisted for the “4PM Bestari
Outstanding Student Award”. The students are Siti Hasanah Binte Mohammed S
from Higher Nitec in Integrated Logistics Management, Norliana Binte Abdul Rahim
from Nitec in Nursing and Mohamed Faisal Bin Mohamed Soffe from Higher Nitec in
Electrical Engineering.
A Team from Electronics Engineering, School of EIT/CE produced a winning entry
that garnered an Encouragement Award at the Green Wave Environment Care
Project Competition organized by Sembawang Shipyard on 19 Oct 2010. The
winning entry submitted by the team takes the form of an innovative power socket
that allows consumers to draw electricity via a CEPAS EZlink pre-paid card. The
device is targeted for installation and use by consumers at suitable public locations
around libraries, schools, hospitals, airports and shopping malls. Leveraging on the
concept of pay-per-use, it is envisaged that the costs of infrastructure setup will be
recovered within an economically viable time frame.
On 8 Oct 2010, The Straits Times reported that students from School of Applied and
Health Sciences, ITE College East, came up the idea to recycle soya bean pulp to
make a tasty and nutritious cracker.

Mr Christopher Pang Jin-Yang (Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Sport
Management)) was awarded the Sng Yew Chong Gold Medal at the ITE
Graduation Ceremony on 21 July 2010. He also received the ITE College East
ExcellenCE Award (Class of Mar 10).
Since 2009, the Electrical Engineering Club students, led by College East lecturers
Mr Chai Yoon Peow and Mr Tan Kheng Heng, had been actively involved in Project
Assistive Technology for All (PATA) projects to enhance the well-being of the
people with physical disabilities. In recognition of their volunteering efforts in PATA,
the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) awarded ITE College East with a
plague on 10 Jul 2010.
At the *SCAPE : EMBRACE THE NOW LAUNCH FESTIVAL on 20 Jun 2010,
Kamsani, a Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Sport Management) student, was the
Winner of Stage Without Borders and Haikal a Nitec in Multimedia Technology
student was the Winner of Judges’ Choice of Stage Without Borders. Our team
of 25 CE students from the Nitec in Digital Audio & Video Production also received
certificates from *SCAPE.
Daniel Poh, a former student from the Biochemical Technology department who
graduated with a gold award, was selected to do his 10-week internship at Harvard
University‟s medical school in 2010.
A team of students from the Electronics department, School of Electronics and Infocomm Technology participated in the Singapore Robo Grand Prix 2010 and
clinched 3rd Position in R1 (JC/ITE) Category on 12 to14 Mar 2010 .
A team of students, Mr Jackson Chew, Mr Lim Kian Leong, Mr Willie Chia, Mr Tang
Chuen Loon and Mr Ryan Christopher Tan, from the Electronics department, School
of Electronics and Info-Comm Technology participated in Category C and Catergory
E of the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2010 and achieved a
total of 5 medals on 19 Mar 2010.
Two teams from ITE College East won the Lee Kuan Yew Technology Award 2010
in the project evaluation held on 10 Feb 2010 at ITE Club House, ITE HQ.

Singapore Labour Foundation Gold Medal (top graduate of ITE‟s
Continuing Education & Training Programme).

National InfoComm Competition 2009
Held on 11 Jul 2009, National InfoComm Competition is competition where
participants have to build an application based on a given scenario within 24 hours.
Led by Mr Patrick Chai, Mr Alvin Chong and Mr Teng Shixuan from the Nitec in InfoCommunications Technology course developed “ProtectoDroid”, an Android
application to help patients and rescue workers in search-and-rescue operations.
This eventually won them a Merit Award.
StrITwise® Robocode 2009: Organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore
Computer Society and iDA, the StrITwise® Robocode (StrITcombat) is a computer
programming competition which tests students‟ skills and strategy in creating a
virtual robotic tank to fight online battle. In the competition held on 14 Nov 2009, the
teams from School of Electronics & Info-Comm Technology emerged 1st Runner-up
and 3rd Runner-up, finishing ahead of many other teams from the Polytechnics.
The 11th International Ornamental Fish & Accessories Exhibition, Aquarama 2009,
was held from 28 May to 31 May 2009 and received entries from the region including
Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, etc. Students from the Aquaculture Club
won 2nd Prize fish breeding (Tetra category) competition.
At WorldSkills Calgary 2009 held from 1 to 7 Sep 2009, the 19-member Team
Singapore, led by our Director & CEO, Mr Bruce Poh, has performed exceptionally
well, garnering 3 Golds, 1 Bronze and 9 Medallions of Excellence. The awardees
from College East are:

Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award (TKKYIA) 2009: Led by Mr Desmond Koo,
a team of 3 students from the Electronics department, School of Electronics and
Info-Communication Technology, Mr Liu Zhihao, Mr Pek Peng Chin, Mr Ng Sze
Meng, took part in the Student Section of the TKK YIA and clinched the Merit Award.
Their project, titled “Key Guide” provides a simple and guided approach for the
elderly with visual difficulties or visually impaired persons to quickly and effectively
locate the door‟s keyhole in a short time.
ITE-IBM Assistive Technology Competition 2009: The annual competition,
organised jointly by ITE College West and IBM, provides a platform for ITE students
to develop innovative ideas in designing devices for people with physical disabilities
and the elderly. A team of 2 Electronics students from School of Electronics and InfoCommunication Technology took part in the competition and emerged as the 1st
Runner-up with their project "Rotary Table for Wheelchair".
Singapore Young Photography Convention 2009: Mr Ahmad Faruq and his
friends from other institutes have grouped together to participate in the competition
on 5 Sep 2009. His group submitted photos with the theme „Masacre‟ and was
awarded the 2nd prize.
3 student teams from the Nitec in Digital Audio & Video Production course
participated in the Best Buddy Forever contest, one of activites organised under the
World Mental Health Day (WMHD) Youth Event 2009. One team done us proud by
winning the 1st Prize. Congratulations to Miss Teo Huimin Miss Cindy, Chua, Miss
Swee Kiat, Miss Eng Guan Rong!
17 ITE College East students received the National Youth Achievement Award
(NYAA) Gold award.
Led by Mr Abdul Wahid, RSQUARE, a team of 8 students from the Nitec in InfoCommunications Technology course won a Gold Award in the Student Innovation
& Quality Club Competition (SIQC). Their project titled “2-in-1 Ethernet cable”
reduces the delays encountered during practical lessons for the Networking
Fundamentals & Devices module.
ITE College East‟s Sport Management students competed in the first ever wrestling
charity event - Kings and Queens Of The Mat 2009 - held in Singapore on 7 and 8
Nov 2009. With no previous experience in wrestling competitions, the Sport
Management team of 27 students performed exceptionally well to win a total of 6
gold medals in the various weight categories. Congratulations to Miss Siti Aminah
Bte Ghazali, Miss Hallejah Bte Raship, Miss April Min Qi Kong, Mr Wei Lin Jerome,

In the drive for innovative projects, the CyberLAB team achieved recognition and
represented ITE to present their project on 'CyberLAB - Remote Virtual Educational
Laboratory' at the International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC) 2008
in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in October 2008. The team also won the 2008 ITE INNOVA
Award.
Mayor's Imagine Social Entrepreneurship Challenge (MISE) 2008: With the
Recycled Banner Bags project, a collaborative team of students from the Accounting,
Nursing and Info-Comm courses emerged first in the National competition that was
organised to raise awareness of social issues and support through enterprise action.
Muhammad Azli Bin Abd Rahim (Nitec in Digital Audio & Video Production),
received one of the 3 merit awards - the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award,
awarded by Yayasan MENDAKI. This is the first time that an ITE student has
received the following accolade.
Java Jive Regional Challenge 2008: The College won 1st Runner-Up and the
Innovation Award at the competition held on 26 June 2008.
Teaw Zhi Qiang (Nitec in Digital Audio & Video Production), won the CDL Youth
Architecture Photographer Award on 10 July 2008.
A team of ITE lecturers and students set off for Taipei, Taiwan, to participate in the
International Exhibition for Youth Inventors (IEYI) 2008 held in September 2008
and clinched one Gold Award, 2 Silver Awards and one Special Award.
Two teams from the School of Electronics & Info-Comm Technology came in 1st and
2nd Runner-Up at the Robocode 2008 Competition held in November 2008.
A group of Higher Nitec in Information Technology students (Team Zenith), took part
in the Infocomm Singapore Awards 2008 and emerged as Champion for the
Tertiary Student Projects category out of 13 nominations, including those from local
universities and polytechnics.
At the 7th ASEANSkills Competition (ASC), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the
College, through Chua Ka Wen and Teo Hui Jun Melissa, clinched the Gold Medals
in Beauty Therapy, 2 out of 4 Gold Medals won by ITE.
In the WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) Competition 2008 held in October 2008, the
College swept 3 Gold Medals, one Silver Medal and one Bronze Medal, and 4
Diplomas of Excellence in the competitions 2 new categories - Beauty Therapy and
Caring. The students are:
