All three searches (Simple, Extended and Browse by Theme) are accessible via separate URLs. You can bookmark your favourite search type as the default start page. The URLs are: http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Quick.do http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Extended.do http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/Start/Explore/Thematic.do Detailed information is available for each of these search methods later in this guide. The Product Navigator starts by default with the “Simple Search” form. Clicking on the “Search” button without any text will display all available resources. Try to be as specific as possible when entering search terms; e.g. MSG wind, GOES South America fire, or combine two or more terms with quotation marks, e.g. “sea surface temperature”. Searches can be further targeted by selecting one or more resource type(s) to be searched (e.g. dataset, document and/or software), 1 Browser support and settings The Product Navigator has been tested in several browsers and versions, including: MS Internet Explorer version 8.0 Firefox version 3.6 Safari version In order for the Product Navigator to work correctly, your browser will need to have the following settings enabled: Accept cookies JavaScript activated The recommended screen resolution is 1280x1024 pixels. 2 Searching in detail The Product Navigator offers: Simple Search: a quick search function that employs fuzzy logic – suitable for general searches. Extended Search: a targeted search with the option to filter by multiple metadata attributes – recommended for users looking for a specific product type. Browse by Theme: a pre-defined tree navigation of products based on several themes, including satellite, category (marine, land, etc.), societal benefit area (disasters, weather etc.) and dissemination types. In the Extended Search, you can also limit the results to a selected geographical area by selecting the spatial extent. Simple Search The Simple Search function employs fuzzy logic when searching metadata, and can be made on the basis of a few inputs. These parameters include: Climate: a climate product type Dataset: a satellite product type Document: documents available from EUMETSAT Software: software available from EUMETSAT 3 A text input field is used for entering search terms, either individually or in combinations. The search is by default whole-word based. For example, searching for the term “cea” would not return the word “ocean”. However, by entering the terms “ocean” or part of the word between asterisks (*) i.e. “*cea*” the search would be successful. The following syntax types are available for a Simple Search: Combined terms (phrases) should be enclosed in quotation marks (“), e.g. "sea surface temperature" Wildcards can be inserted for indeterminate characters, e.g. *land, North*, *use* For best results, try to use multiple search terms; e.g. MSG wind, GOES south America fire – or combine two or more terms with quotation marks e.g. “sea surface temperature”. Note that the Simple Search does not distinguish between upper and lower case letters. Note that Simple Search has an autocomplete. After three characters are entered an automatic search for matching keywords is made and a list of hits is presented. The list is amended as further letters are entered: Extended Search We recommend that you use the Extended Search whenever possible. With the Extended Search you can refine your search criteria by choosing subsets of attributes. In general, filtering using two or more criteria delivers the most accurate results. 4 Extended Search attributes include: Collection Type Restrict the resource to be searched: Climate: describes a climate product type Dataset: satellite product types Document: documents available from EUMETSAT Software: software available from EUMETSAT One or more entries can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while selecting other entries with the left mouse button . Societal Benefit Area Select one or more benefits if you want to search for a specific societal benefit area. As shown below one or more entries can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while selecting other entries with the left mouse button. 5 Category Search one or more categories. One or more entries can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while selecting other entries with the left mouse button. Product Provider Used to find resources from a particular Provider. Dissemination Used to find resources for the selected dissemination method. Product Status Used to search for resources only with the selected product status. Satellite The search will only show resources from the selected satellite. This is only relevant for dataset(s). Instrument The search will only show resources from the selected instrument. This is only relevant for a dataset(s). Collection Reference Specify the collection reference (if known) e.g. EO:EUM:DAT:MSG:HRSEVIRI Collection Name Specify the collection name (if known) e.g. “High Rate SEVIRI Level 1.5 Image Data - MSG 0 degree” or “*SEVIRI*” Description 6 This will search for a word or string in the abstract field. Acronym Searches for the acronym name, e.g. HRSEVIRI. For further help, please consult the list of acronyms (“Show Acronym List”). Time Range: from – to This displays all records representing a time interval falling within or overlapping with your selected time range. We recommend that this feature be used in conjunction with multiple filters to further narrow search results. Spatial Extent “Define Area of Interest” and search with a spatial filter. Selecting the button “Define an Area of Interest” displays a global map allowing the user to select an area. Hold down the SHIFT key and the left mouse button and drag the mouse to select an area of interest. Once selected, close the window with the close icon to accept the area. Access Constraint 7 Find “open Access” collections while activating the access constraint field. Show EUMETSAT Data only Find Data from the EUMETSAT Application Ground Segment (Central Facility and Satellite Application Facilities). On the menu to the left-hand side under “Settings”, the “Auto Hit Counter” can be turned on or off. When activated, you will see the number of hits change as you tick check boxes or enter search strings. The setting “EUMETSAT Data” will affect the sort order of the returned results. “EUMETSAT Data” in ascending order, will first show all resources of EUMETSAT in alphabetic order followed by non-EUMETSAT resources. In descending order non-“EUMETSAT Data is shown first. Browse By Theme When browsing by theme a search is executed based on a tree structure. Selecting a particular theme will display all resources fulfilling the criteria. At upper levels of the hierarchy, you can explore the themes’ directories. Once a topic is selected ( directory or document), all the entries associated with or subordinate to the theme will be displayed in a results list. Common Settings for Searches Define your settings for sorting search results or the number of hits during query creation. 8 If you want to change the order of the result list displayed, select your preference under “Search > Settings”. Modifying the “Auto Hit Counter” will affect only the ‘Extended Search’. Available hits are dynamically shown (“Number of Records”) when defining or changing query parameters. This capability is configurable: switch on/off within the “Settings” Dialog. The default setting is “switched-on”. 9 List of Results The results of a search are displayed in a navigable result list. When viewing the result list, the list can be printed by clicking on the “print page” icon. 10 Detailed product information is displayed when clicking on a product’s title and additional product services are available by clicking on the associated product icons, as described below: Data Access Data Centre Access to the resource in the EUMETSAT Data Centre. Direct Access EUMETCast Access to the EUMETCast subscription service through the Earth Observation Portal. Show Spatial Extent Link to display the Spatial Extent window which displays the geographic bounding box for the product. Bookmark Record You can bookmark a collection based on a URL addressing schema on the ‘Collection Reference’. Show Detail Information Displays the detailed product information. Show Aggregated Metadata Shows all resources which are related to this metadata (presently not used within our resources). Export Metadata Set as XML Metadata can be exported as XML, enabling you to save the file locally. If you need to fully 11 validate the schema, you can add in the XML header xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.eumetsat.int/2008/gmi http://navigator.eumetsat.int/discovery/rest/schemas/eum/eum.xsd which will access the online available schema at EUMETSAT. The header would then look like: <gmi:MI_Metadata xmlns:gmi="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmi" xmlns:str="http://exslt.org/strings" xmlns:date="http://exslt.org/datesand-times" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-functions" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:gmd="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmd" xmlns:gml="http://www.opengis.net/gml" xmlns:eum="http://www.eumetsat.int/2008/gmi" xmlns:gco="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gco" xmlns:xdt="http://www.w3.org/2005/02/xpath-datatypes" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:gmx="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmx" xmlns="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmd" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.eumetsat.int/2008/gmi http://46.51.189.235/discovery/rest/schemas/eum/eum.xsd">..... The Collection Name is the official name of the product. The Acronym lists the dissemination acronym and archive acronyms of a product (in that order). 13 The Description is a brief overview of the product. The Product Status states the dissemination status of the product. States include: Operational, Pre-operational, Demonstration and Development. The Date is the date of creation and/or revision of the product. The Time Range: The “begin” represents the time at which the product was first made operational. In the case of some older products, the “begin” date is the first date at which the product was archived. The “end” represents the time at which the product ceased to be available – even from the Archive. This field is usually left blank. Geographic Bounding Box: this is a rectangular geographical region within which the product is available. The default is the whole globe, defined by North-South coordinates = +/90, East-West coordinates = +/- 180 degrees. Point of Contact: these are the contact details of the originating centre of the data, i.e. the Product Provider - typically the name of the organisation. EUMETSAT Helpdesk contact details are also provided. Categorisation Tab The Categorisation tab contains some product information relating to search topics and thematic keywords, such as to which category and societal benefit area the product corresponds. In addition, you will find information on the satellite and instrument channels (if applicable), a link to an example image, and links to other available online resources. 14 Distribution Tab The Distribution Tab contains information about the various product distribution mechanisms. There are various mechanisms such as: EUMETCast, the EUMETSAT Data Centre, the Global Telecommunication System (GTS), Direct Dissemination and via the Internet etc. The most complete set of information is displayed for EUMETCast dissemination, including file name examples, file formats, average file sizes and dissemination frequencies. Selecting the EUMETSAT Data Centre link will automatically open the online ordering Java Web Start Application and flag the acronym of the product for ease of access to this product. Any Legal Constraints relating to the access and use of the data are set out after the dissemination information as follows: Use Limitations: This metadata element defines the conditions for access and use of spatial datasets.
