You are invited to bring treats and sweets for the snack table. We will also be holding a free raffle for members of the society. However, to have something to raffle, we need donations. Donations are not obligatory, but greatly appreciated. You can donate a small orchid, this can be a division of one of your plants, or some orchid-related item for the raffle. The orchid related item can be some potting material (charcoal, clay, bark, moss, etc.), an orchid picture, orchid cards, plant labels, fertilizer or an orchid book (old or new). Hope you can attend to renew old friendships and make new friends. MEMBERSHIP: $25 from September 1 - August 31. 1 Editor’s Note: Many parts in Canada have been hit with tons of snow and freezing temperatures. We have been spared but weather reports indicate freezing rain is coming our way along with lots and lots of snow. As a Society, we have had a pretty good year. Our annual show was quite successful thanks to all our volunteers, show participants and visitors. The good news is that almost all of the show organizers of last year will be helping out again. Dave Cooper, our Show Chairman, has designed two beautiful show nd posters to announce our 32 Annual Orchid Show. The posters are stunning and are sure to attract the public’s attention. The posters were on display at the November monthly meeting. If you would like to view beautiful orchids, we have a treat for you. Arlene Lang has been very busy for some time now providing Dave Cooper, our Webmaster, with photographs she took of the displays and orchids at our annual show. She is still sending Dave photographs to put on the Society’s web site. There is a lot of work identifying each photograph and linking the image with information on the plant, the exhibitor and award or ribbon won. To view what is up to date on the plant exhibits and individual plant winners, click on this link: http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/ribbon_awards_2012.htm . Thank you, Arlene and Dave, for all the work you have done setting this all up. Above on the left are a few of the pictures that Arlene recently sent to Dave to put on the website. From the top left: Coryanthes (Cyt.) macrantha, Crystal Star Orchids; Floral display, “Orchid in the Bush” - Nathalie Drent; Floral display, “Tahitian Sunrise” - Erica Sanders; Den. The November speaker, Tandie McLeod from the Orchid Species Preservation Foundation of Alberta (OSPF) in Edmonton, gave an excellent presentation on the work of the OSPF. If you would like to support the OSPF or get further information, you may contact Tandie McLeod at [email protected] or the President of the OSPF, Doug Bovee, at [email protected]. On the far left is a picture of Tandie McLeod with Janet Johns who picked up Tandie at the airport and put her up overnight at her home. Thank you, Janet and John Johns for your kind hospitality and thank you, Tandie, for sharing with us the work of the OSPF and the contribution by the members of the Orchid Society of Alberta. Photo- Arlene Lang. On the far right we have Marilyn Light who pitched in with gloves and potting material for the Orchids 101 presentation to Society members and visitors at the November meeting. Marilyn is a great teacher and is responsible for creating the Orchids 101 Program. Thanks a “bucketful” Marilyn, for your contribution! Rick Sobkowicz, Spike Editor and Past President 2 UPCOMING MONTHLY MEETINGS Orchid 101 The December meeting is about orchids and socializing. Therefore, there will be no Orchid 101 this month. December Program As the tradition goes, the December meeting will be a social event. There will be the usual Show Table where members will showcase their orchids. Following the usual announcements, we will gather together for a social afternoon; members are encouraged to bring their holiday food creations. Merry Christmas to all! January Program – January 20, 2013 In January, the Society will hold its annual auction. Members are asked to donate their orchid materials and orchid plants for auction. The auction is the main source of revenue for the support of the program and its participation at out-of-town shows, this is important as it is a vehicle to attract other societies to our annual Show. The auction is also a very good place to acquire material, plants and other orchid materials at very low cost. It is a win-win program. February Special Event For those who might want to do away with their winter blues, here is an event that you should not miss. The Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival 2013 will be held in Tokyo, Japan from February th th 16 to February 24 . It is by far the best orchid show in the world. Take time to see Tokyo and take the train to the former imperial city of Kyoto. Enjoy Japan!!! For more information, see JGP at http://www.jgpweb.com/english/ . February Program – February 17, 2013 In February the Society will have the honour of hosting Thomas Mirenda. Tom Mirenda has been the Orchid Collection Specialist for the Smithsonian Institution for the last 10 years. There he cares for and curates an extremely diverse collection of orchid species and hybrids from all over the world. His position includes developing and producing huge educational exhibits using the collection plants that last up to 4 months and are visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors. Trained originally as a Marine Biologist, Tom made the switch to plants and orchids in his late 20s while living in Hawaii. Since then he has worked with orchids at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and an extensive private collection at Greentree Estate in Long Island. Tom was also the floor manager at the New York International Orchid Show for many years during this period. For the last 6 years, Tom has contributed two columns each month for ORCHIDs magazine and is developing a new book based on those writings. Tom travels frequently around the US and internationally making presentations to diverse audiences, from scientists to the general public, about orchid ecology, pollination biology, and strategies for orchid conservation. He is passionate about seeking collaboration between the worlds of Botanic Gardens, the hobbyist community, commercial growers and scientists to work together toward the goal of protecting orchids and their habitats. Currently working on a project to coordinate and centralize North American orchid conservation efforts, Tom hopes to extend the influence to other parts of the world where orchids are imperiled. The subject of his talk will be Orchid Innovations of the Taiwanese. 3 MEMBERSHIP Welcome to the following members who have joined the Society: Dirk de Snayer, Mouzaya Dabboussy, Jackie Neva and Nertheiga Thayan CANADIAN DISTRIBUTOR FOR AGDIA ORCHID VIRUS IMMUNOSTRIPS From: St-Jean, Rob (ES) [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: December-07-12 11:46 AM To: [email protected] Subject: For announcement in Spike Hi Rick, I just found out there is now a Canadian distributor for the Agdia orchid virus ImmunoStrips. I think it would be useful to mention it in Spike. There is significant savings by going to the Canadian distributor. For example the savings on a set of 5 test strips is about half of the total price because of the duty and shipping costs associated with ordering from the U.S. The distributor can be found through Agdia’s web page: http://www.agdia.com/contact/Distributors.cfm And from the drop down menu when you pick ‘Canada’ you will be taken to: A&L Canada Laboratories, Inc., 2136 Jetstream Rd, London, ON N5V 3P5 (Phone: 519-457-2575), E-mail: [email protected] Web: http://www.alcanada.com Regards, Robert St-Jean Thank you, Robert, for the above information. QUESTION From Henriette M. Watkins, e-mail address: [email protected] Hi Rick; Two or three years ago I was fortunate to get an un-named/unlabled orchid on the raffle table which I carefully looked after all this time. Much to my surprise it sent up a spike with very long buds early in October and, to my delight, started to bloom in the second week of November. I believe it is a Brassia or spider orchid, but which one? I really regret that I was unable to bring it to the November meeting for proper identification but as it has now grown out of the pot and is resting on a tray with the spike supported by a stake imbedded in a raw potato placed in a pot made by my husband, Ken. It is just a little difficult to travel with in a moving car! Can anyone help to identify this orchid? Henriette will be at the December meeting. 4 OOS Show Table for November 18, 2012 CLASS Cattleya Alliance judged by Henry Steger Cypripedium Alliance Paphiopedilum judged by Henry Steger Phragmipedium judged by André Couture Oncidium Alliance judged by Henry Steger PLACE NAME st Epidendrum Radicanto-Stamfordianum 1 ‘Sherice’ nd Cattleya Portia var. coerulea x Cattlianthe 2 Sir Jeremiah Colman ‘Blue’ nd **Cattleya (Syn. Change can be daunting, terrifying. Change can be challenging, exciting, full of opportunities. Some people embrace change; some people, fearing the change in the status quo, fight it all the way. The AOS faced many challenges and changes in the past two years. Under the brave and able leadership of our past president, Chris Rehmann, the board made difficult decisions. It was a troubling and scary time, a time of unknown consequences. In spite of those incredible challenges and the unknown, today, we can say that those were the right decisions, that we are a better organization, stronger, facing opportunities that were never imagined during those difficult days. With the unstinting dedication and willingness to give more than we could ever expect, working 48/7, our COO, Dr. Ron McHatton, has shown imagination, adaptability—a vision to make the best of very difficult circumstances. It is hard to imagine that 2 1/2 months ago we didn’t even know our Director of Finance and Administration’s name. With the recommendation of AOS members and the Fairchild CEO and COO who interviewed her, the decision was made to hire Gladys Garcia-Greenberg. She is a wonderful addition to our family. She brings strengths to our organization that we need. Her intelligence, organizational and people skills, and enthusiasm will help us take advantage of the many opportunities that we have. Exciting News Orchids goes Digital online January 2013 Available to all members: While waiting for ORCHIDS to arrive in the mail, you will be able to access the digital version of ORCHIDS by logging on to the AOS website using your current user name and password. Then click on the link to view Orchids. You can view a sample NOW at http://www.nxtbook.com/allen/orch/81-1/index.php. $50,000 for "Practical" Research in Orchids The AOS is soliciting you, our members, and the general public, for suggestions for ideas for practical/applied research whose results could be immediately applied by all, the hobbyist and commercial growers alike, to the way we grow and understand our orchids. The ideas will be reviewed, a 11 few chosen, and then requests for proposals will be sent out to universities. The funds, generated from a donation, will be used to support the researchers who will conduct the studies to answer the questions posed by our members and the general public Please send any ideas, with your contact information to [email protected]. Calendar sales help support conservation AOS calendars are available now and make great Christmas gifts! They are also sold to the public at the Fairchild Gift Shop. The calendars are $13.50 for AOS members (please log into the website to receive your discount) and $14.95 for non-members, including free shipping for orders to United States mailing addresses. Two dollars of each sale will go to support AOS conservation projects. While we are on the subject of Conservation funds............................. The AOS now has a new permanently restricted Conservation endowment. The concept for the endowment was approved at the Board's meeting in Witchita, Kansas this last spring. While still in it's fledgling stages, donations can be made to the new fund simply by designating Conservation Endowment when making a donation. As an endowment, only the appreciation of interests, dividends and investment gains can be spent. Please consider giving to this worthy cause. You can make a difference! Good News Our New Home: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden The AOS headquarters is situated in a small house, the Fairchild Research Center, south east of the main Fairchild Gardens campus. Since March of this year, the AOS staff has been living in 425 square feet (one room). The room was filled with file cabinets, equipment, and endless number of boxes (they multiply like rabbits every so often). The good news is that now the researchers have moved to a new “home” and the AOS staff has been able to move into additional office space, and the COO and DFA longer have to share one desk! Library and Archives John Ingram of the AOS Archive and Library Committee has visited the space available at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and we are now making plans to move our precious holdings of books, paintings, archival material to the Garden. Fairchild has plans to build a new library which will eventually be the home to our library and archives and we will be partners in this venture. Grants to Fairchild Over the years, funds have been donated to the AOS that came with specific instructions on how this money should be spent. In not-for-profit parlance, these are temporarily restricted donations and must be held until the opportunity arises to spend the funds within the limitations made at the time of donation. More than ten years ago, the Rod McLellan family donated funds for a theater stage. Our move has given us the opportunity to provide to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, in the form of a grant, these funds. The Fairchild will use the funds to modernize and upgrade it's existing garden amphitheater insuring that the funds have been spent in the manner designated by the McLellan family. 12 Cork Tree, Fairchild Tropical Conservatory, awaiting the placement of the orchids Additional grants to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden include a donation from Theo & Ellen Rumble of Boca Raton for construction of a cork tree which has been constructed in the new FTBG Tropical Conservatory House, and a grant with money from the International Phalaenopsis Alliance for a Phalaenopsis species exhibit. Mr. and Mrs. Rumble donated the funds for the original cork tree in the AOS Delray Beach display greenhouse and followed that donation with funds to construct a second tree. We are elated to say that the new cork tree at the FTBG has been built! All donations will be acknowledged with a plaque recognizing the AOS and the specific donor. Just for Fun Membership Insights – Stats from our COO Fifty-one of our members represent libraries and 603 are either Affiliated Societies or commercial businesses. Seventy-four are a collection of non-revenue generating memberships that represent various exchanges and complementary memberships. This leaves 8392 hobbyists that make up the balance of our membership.Twelve percent (1090) of our membership reside outside the United States. The distribution of these 1090 members reflects an interesting demographic. Twenty-three percent live in Canada and an equivalent number reside in Non-United Kingdom Europe. Eleven percent is from Australia and New Zealand and an equivalent number come from South America. Nearly equal numbers, 7% and 6% respectively, come from Japan and the United Kingdom. The entire remainder of Asia represents 9% and 4% hale from Africa. The remaining 8% represent the rest of the world. We hope that with our new digital magazine, the number of members outside of the USA will increase. Problems with mail delivery has made it a challenge for these members to get ORCHIDS. Now they will have access before ORCHIDS even goes to print! Let’s take a brief look at the distribution of our South American and European members. South America follows a distribution that effectively mirrors population distribution with Brazil carrying the lion’s share at 56%. This is followed by Colombia a distant second and Argentina in third place. Europe, on the other hand, is far from the distribution of population. Population distribution would suggest Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy and Spain in that order. The actual distribution is the United Kingdom at 21%, France at 17%, Germany at 14%, and Switzerland and Italy at 7% each. It will be interesting to see how our global membership evolves with the advent of our digital magazine offering. 13 Events Out and About Join us: Spring 2013 Members’ Meeting March 21 – March 23, 2013 Location: San Diego, California Held in conjunction with the San Diego County Orchid Society Show Show Location: The Scottish Rite Temple, San Diego, California Hotel: Sheraton Mission Valley Hotel, www.sheratonmissionvalley.com Rooms: $119, Promotion code when making reservations: AOS Contact: The American Orchid Society: [email protected] or call 305.740.2010 For a calendar of upcoming shows click here You won't want to miss these fabulous international shows! - click here for information Thanks for supporting the AOS!
