GNCC SERIES
RESUMES AFTER TWO RAINOUTS
Both Mullins and Strang led at different points during the race at Rock Run. Mullins got
off a good start and led early, but after two crashes, he settled into a more controlled
pace to finish third. Josh Strang grabbed the lead halfway through the three-hour race
when eventual winner Am Pro/FMF/ Yamaha rider Paul Whibley got stuck on a steep
climb. However, Whibley took control again when Strang pitted for gas.
Unlike at the other GNCC races this season, the weather in Patton was dry and hot.

CELEBRATES MEMORIAL
WEEKEND WITH A WORCS WIN
Dunlop-sponsored rider Kurt Caselli dominated round five of the World Off
Road Championship Series (WORCS) in Payette, ID, during the Memorial
Day weekend, finishing a perfect 1-1 for the overall win on his FMF/KTM.
In the first race, Dunlop-sponsored rider FMF/KTM’s Mike Brown took the
holeshot and led for several laps before Caselli passed him. Brown battled
Dunlop-sponsored rider Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Taylor Robert for
second during much of the race, with Brown finally taking second and
Robert third.
Brown led early in the second race, but Caselli took over when Brown
headed to the pits, and extended his lead with every lap. The battle for
second between Robert, Brown and Dunlop-sponsored rider Monster
Energy Kawasaki’s Justin Soule lasted through the last lap, and at the
checkered it was Robert, Soule and Brown in order.
Caselli’s 1-1 put him first overall, while Robert took second and Brown
third. Caselli, last year’s champion, holds the points lead with Robert
behind him in second and privateer Bobby Garrison in third. Dunlop riders
hold eight of the top 10 spots in the series.

THE PASSING OF
JEFF KARGOLA
10
The off-road racing community is mourning the loss of off-road racer and freestyle star Jeff “Ox” Kargola. The-27-year-old died
on Friday, April 29, 2011, as a result of the injuries he suffered in an off-road crash while participating in the 2011 Rip to the Tip
Baja adventure ride in Mexico. The annual eight-day, nonracing event begins in Tecate and ends in Cabo San Lucas. Kargola was
attended to by medical personnel on site and was transported via helicopter to the San Felipe hospital where he passed away.
Kargola was a two-time winner of the SCORE San Felipe 250, including winning the March 2011 event, teaming with his longtime friend Colton Udall on the Johnny Campbell Racing Honda team. Kargola was a member of the Metal Mulisha FMX team
and was a regular competitor in the X Games, including taking the 2005 Men’s Best Trick silver medal. The San Clemente, CA,
resident was well-loved throughout the off-road racing and freestyle communities.

JEFF STANTON
JOINS DUNLOP LEGENDS
Making it to the top in motocross is one thing; staying on top is another beast
altogether. Few racers in the history of the sport can match the success that Jeff
Stanton had during the prime of his career in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
One of America’s all-time-great motocross heroes, Stanton’s achievements
include 37 combined Motocross and Supercross race wins; three AMA 250
National championships; three AMA 250 Supercross championships; two World
Supercross titles; and three-time member of the winning US Motocross des
Nations team.
Stanton’s reputation includes the relentless, no-prisoners approach he took
toward racing and winning, and the incredible work ethic he brought to training.
He will long be remembered for being one of the hardest-working riders in the
history of the sport. His legacy continues to shine as many of today’s motocross
stars name Stanton as one of their inspirations for racing.
Now, Stanton joins some of the biggest names in the sport by taking his place
among the Dunlop Legends. The image of Stanton for the Dunlop Legends
poster was taken at the 1989 Daytona Supercross by legendary shooter Paul
Buckley, and it was his first of four consecutive Daytona wins.
The limited-edition, collectible Jeff Stanton poster—as well as all the Dunlop
Legends posters (see page 15)—is available through the Road 2 Recovery
Foundation Web site (www.road2recovery.com) or call 480-276-1131.

LEGENDS
IN OUR TIME
In 2005 Dunlop introduced the Legends, a series of black and white ads featuring some of the most
legendary champions in motorcycling. The ads were so popular with enthusiasts that people asked
for posters, so Dunlop decided to offer the ads as limited-edition, high-quality posters with the
proceeds benefiting injured racers. With images captured by photographers Paul Buckley, Bill
Delaney, Gold & Goose, Dave Hawkins and Ken Vreeke, these collector-edition Legends posters are
printed on heavy 19- by 26-inch art paper, and have immortalized legendary motorcycle racing
champions over the years, including David Bailey, Yvon Duhamel, Broc Glover, Bob Hannah, Kent
Howerton, Rick Johnson, Wayne Rainey, Kenny Roberts, Bubba Shobert, Jeff Ward, Bruce Ogilvie,
Malcolm Smith, Doug Henry and Jeremy McGrath. For 2011, Dunlop has added Jeff Stanton to that
list, and has joined with the Road 2 Recovery Foundation to expand the Legends program.
“Dunlop has supported some of the greatest racers in history, and this is a great opportunity to
give back to the sport through the Road 2 Recovery Foundation,” said Dunlop Vice President
Mike Buckley.
Road 2 Recovery lends financial assistance to injured motorcycle racers. These collectible Dunlop
Legends posters are available through the Road 2 Recovery Foundation Web site from their online
store. To purchase, visit road2recovery.com or call 480-276-1131.

IN DAYTONA SPORTBIKE ACTION, A
SLEW OF RIDERS HAVE CLIMBED
THE PODIUM IN THE EVENTS
CONTESTED THUS FAR, A
REFLECTION OF JUST HOW TIGHT
THE RACING HAS BEEN.
Late springtime brought additional rounds to the budding 2011 AMA Pro
Road Racing season at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA, Utah’s Miller
Motorsports Park, Elkhart Lake’s Road America in Wisconsin and Barber
Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, and tight racing was the norm as the
wide-open competition has the championship up for grabs in all classes.
This is especially evident in the American SuperBike series where Monster
Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes and Rockstar Makita Suzuki
teammates Blake Young and Tommy Hayden have dominated the podium
thus far, with Hayes leading the points chase by a mere two points over
Young. The three riders have already staged some epic on-track battles and
that dogfight will certainly continue all season long.
In Daytona SportBike action, a slew of riders have climbed the podium in
the events contested thus far, a reflection of just how tight the racing has
been. Jason DiSalvo started out hot with three victories in hand aboard his
Latus Motors Racing Ducati, but then suffered two DNFs at Road America.
That opened the door for Josh Herrin (Monster Energy Graves Yamaha),
who capitalized by winning both DSB races at Elkhart Lake. But it was 2010
class champ Danny Eslick (GEICO Powersports RMR Suzuki) who took full
advantage of his opportunities at Barber, scoring a win and a second-place
finish to take over the points lead with 161. Herrin trails immediately behind
in second place with 157 points, while DiSalvo remains in the chase in third
with 141. Other notable riders who have shown excellent speed in the class
include Cory West (Vesrah Racing Suzuki), Tommy Aquino on the Y.E.S./Pat
Clark/Graves Yamaha, PJ Jacobson riding the Celtic Racing/Fast by
Ferracci Ducati and Cameron Beaubier (GP Bike Parts Racing Yamaha).
In the SuperSport class, some of the young up-and-coming riders to watch
include James Rispoli, Tomas Puerta, and Dustin Dominguez in the East
series, and Benny Solis, David Gaviria, Travis Wyman and Corey Alexander
in the West series. In the XR1200 class, close racing and multiple winners
have also been the rule of thumb, with Chris Fillmore, Steve Rapp and Kyle
Wyman all posting race wins, and Michael Barnes, Joe Kopp, Danny Eslick,
Tyler OHara and Travis Wyman earning podium appearances.

THE 2011 AMA PRO
MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
IS SHAPING UP TO BE A DOOZY.
Ryan Dungey, the 2010 Motocross Champion, and 2011 Supercross
Champion Ryan Villopoto are both in the thick of the 450 class
action; however, it’s 2009 Motocross champ Chad Reed who’s
shaking up the 450 competition this season. After bowing out of last
year’s Motocross series due to illness, Reed has returned with his
newly formed TwoTwo Motorsports team, and has emerged as the
man to beat, winning three of five rounds in the series. The 250
class continues to showcase the inspiring talents of Motocross’
rising stars, while the Women’s Motocross competition has
witnessed gripping battles between past and present champions,
Jessica Patterson and Ashley Fiolek, each week. Team Dunlop
alumni Blake Baggett, Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac and Fiolek have all
made a mark on the 2011 competition, winning holeshots, races
and overall rounds—with Baggett taking the lion’s share of wins so
far. Dunlop riders have finished on top in all three classes at each
round this season.
The season kicked off with the Hangtown National in Sacramento,
CA, in late May and a full cast of talented 450 class racers took to
the Hangtown start gate to tackle the grueling outdoor series
opener. Reed put his years of experience to good use coming away
with the opening round victory, while Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s
Dungey finished runner-up. Fresh from winning the Supercross title,
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Villopoto finished third. Next up was the
Freestone National in Texas, and Reed again came out on top for
the second week in a row, sweeping both motos. Dungey looked to
have the goods to take the overall win until his bike suffered a
RYANVILLOPOTO
mechanical problem in moto two forcing him out of the race. His 225 results put him eighth overall, while Villopoto joined Reed on the
podium, going 3-5 for third overall.
42
43
DUNLOP RIDERS HAVE FINISHED ON
TOP IN ALL THREE CLASSES AT EACH
ROUND THIS SEASON.
High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA, hosted round three in the series and
Villopoto broke through to take his first overall victory of the year. Dungey
clinched the number two spot, while Reed finished third. The following week at
Budds Creek, Reed returned to his winning ways and scored his third overall
victory, while Villopoto finished runner-up and Dungey third. At the fifth round in
Colorado, Dungey broke through to record his first win of the season with
Villopoto in second and Reed third. After five rounds in the series, Reed leads
Villopoto by eight points in the championship and has a 21-point lead over
Dungey in third.
The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki squad dominated the opening 250
class event with Baggett coming away the overall winner. Teammates Dean
Wilson and Tyla Rattray rounded out second and third, respectively. At Freestone
it was a similar story; however, this time Rattray nabbed the top spot while
Wilson finished runner-up for the second week in a row. DNA/Shred Stix/Star
Racing Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham edged his way onto the podium for the first
time this season taking third overall.
After his impressive win at Hangtown and a disappointing finish at Freestone,
Baggett rebounded at High Point, sweeping both motos to record his second
overall victory of the season, while Rattray nabbed second overall and GEICO
Honda’s Tomac finished third. Rattray took top honors at Budds Creek with
Wilson in second spot and GEICO Honda’s Barcia finished third. A week later in
Colorado, Baggett planted his feet firmly atop the podium once again with a 1-1
moto sweep to take his third overall win. Wilson finished a spot behind, and
Tomac notched third place. Wilson leads Rattray by eight points in the 250
championship and is 20 points ahead of Baggett in third.
It feels like a case of déjà vu in the WMX competition as reigning champ
DNA/Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Patterson and two-time WMX champ
American Honda Racing’s Fiolek continue to go head to head. Patterson kept
Fiolek in check at Hangtown pulling off a sweep of the top spots to secure the
opening-round victory, while Fiolek finished runner-up and German racer
Stephanie Laier put her Red Bull KTM in third.
The following week Fiolek capitalized on a mistake by Patterson when she
crashed in the opening moto to go 1-2 for the overall round victory. Troy Lee
Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Tarah Gieger finished runner-up while MotoConcepts
Yamaha’s Mariana Balbi took third overall. Patterson’s 13-1 result put her in
fourth overall, but she returned to her wining ways at the third round in Colorado
going 1-1 for the overall victory. Fiolek went 2-2 for second, with Gieger third

TEAM DUNLOP
BLITZ TOP SPOTS
AT WORLD MINI
GRAND PRIX
At the 2011 World Mini Grand Prix held in Mesquite, NV, on April 11 to 17, Dunlop-sponsored
Team riders Stilez Robertson, Garrett Marchbanks, Brandy Richards, Tanner Stack, Mark
Worth, Michael Mosiman, Jordon Smith and Chase Bell performed tremendously aboard their
Geomax-fitted race machines, racking up 12 national titles.
Robertson made a stellar return to racing after suffering an injury earlier in the year, clinching
five titles at the weeklong event. He dominated the 50cc-65cc competition winning the 50
Pee Wee Stock and Mod 7-8 titles, plus the Super Pee Wee Mod 6-9 Championship and
taking both 65 Jr Cycle Stock and Mod 6-8 victories. “I came back at the World Minis and
collected five titles,” said Stilez. “I loved it there. That track’s really fun. I’m not used to that
dirt but I liked it and I had a good time.”
Richards swept the 65-85 Girls 2 Stroke Championship; Stack clinched the 85 Stock Thru 11
title, while Worth won both 85/150 Mod 12-13 motos en route to the title win. Smith nabbed
the 85/150 Mod 14-16 Championship, while Mosiman swept the 85 Mod Thru 11
Championship and Bell took the Supermini Thru 13 title.
In addition to Team Dunlop’s excellent results, a strong showing by other Dunlop-equipped
racers garnered 23 championships for a combined total of 35 national titles by Dunlop riders.

THE MOST IMPRESSIVE TRAIT HAS BEEN THE ABILITY OF
DUNLOP TO BLEND THE QUICK WARM-UP OF A STREET
TIRE WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF A RACE TIRE.
Q: What do your students say about the Dunlop tires they ride on?
A: The consistent feedback we receive from students is that the Dunlops have excellent grip and that the tires feel “solid”
underneath them. There is none of the vagueness or squirming that they often experience with other brands.
Q: How do these qualities carry over to Q2s used for street riding?
A: Since these tires warm up much more quickly than race tires, street riders are able to take advantage of the extra grip
and superior feedback with confidence that there is a direct connection between them and the road.
Q: Can you compare these tires to the ones you raced on back in the day? Help us understand how far tires have
progressed over the years.
A: The most impressive trait has been the ability of Dunlop to blend the quick warm-up of a street tire with the performance
of a race tire. Full race tires do not perform well when they are cold. Street tires work much better at ambient temperature,
but tend to get greasy-feeling when they are pushed in a track-day environment. The Q2 has grip levels that approach
those of the full-racing tires and combines that with the cold-tire performance of a street tire. There is no doubt that this is
the number one choice on the market today for a rider with a bike that is used for both street and track duties.
