Venice
April 2012
Destination - Venice
Venice, gains its glittering reputation as the city of Marco Polo, of the carnival,
of 16th century masterpieces and stunning contemporary artworks which line
the banks of its canals. St Mark’s Square, the Grand Canal, the Bridge of Sighs, the art museums, the carnival, thegondolas, the lace of Burano, and the glass
of Murano, all contribute to the charm of the ancient capital of the
"Serenissima".
A powerful economic force for over eleven hundred years,
Venice formed an important bridge between the east and west, where both
goods and cultural traditions were exchanged, as can be witnessed in the
arabesque motifs in the churches, or the Byzantine mosaics which adorn
public, private and ecclesiastical buildings. An ancient city which
enthusiastically embraces the modern world, Venice is home to both
buildings filled with 16th century masterpieces and to the biennale, where
artworks by the world’s most innovative living artists are exhibited.
The "City of Bridges", as it is usually called, stretches along the mouths of the
Po and the Piave rivers. Out of the 270,000 inhabitants, about 62,000 live in
the historic center, or city of Venice, about 176,000 live in the mainland or
"Terraferma", behind the lagoon, in locations like Mestre and Marghera, and
all the others live on islands throughout the lagoon (islands around Venice are
about one-hundred). Also known as a magnetic point for sweethearts, lovers,
artists and poets, Venice is a magic city, which stretches across numerous
small islands. It is often referred to as the city of "gondole”, which are the means of transportation used to cross the numerous canals passing through
the city. The main means of transportation in Venice is represented by boats,
as the city is surrounded by canals (you can find about 150 in Venice), but the
city is also easy to visit on foot. The causeway built in the 19th century
allowed trains to reach the city of Venice from the Mainland. Aanother type of
boat that represents a symbol of Venice, the "vaporetti", also called
waterbuses or taxis. Just like any motor land-bus, these water buses also have
lines that pick/drop-you off at different points of the city.
Hotels
HOTEL BONVECCHIATI – 4*
Refined elegance, comfort and exclusive services, a water landing for gondolas and motor boats and a romantic restaurant on the terrace: the
Hotel Bonvecchiati, which has been welcoming guests to the heart of Venice since 1790, is just 3 minutes from Saint Mark's Square and 5 from
the Rialto Bridge, for the most exclusive and unforgettable of visits. The Hotel Bonvecchiati, a 4-star hotel in Venice housed in a historic palazzo,
has been famous in the city for centuries for the "terrazza" that hosts and gives its name to the restaurant, and for the quality of the services it
offers. The hotel has large halls, elegantly decorated in a modern Venetian style and enhanced by precious marble and valuable fabrics, that
provide comfortable spaces for moments of relaxation and socializing. The lobby is perfect for reading the international newspapers provided for
guests, surfing the Internet or having a drink, cup of coffee or aperitif at the bar. To regain your sense of well-being after a day spent in the lanes

Hotels
MONACO & GRAND CANAL – 4*
The hotel, which overlooks the Grand Canal, is in one of Venice's most charming and atmospheric areas. The Hotel Monaco has majestic views of
the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the island of San Giorgio, and it is just next to Cà Giustinian the historical site of the Biennale. From
1638 the building, originally belonging to the Dandolo family, hosted the first "Ridotto Pubblico", a place to which nobility and people from all
walks of life, (adventurers, courtesans, swindlers, and travelers) would retire for pleasure and intrigue. Giacomo Casanova considered this place
the ideal backdrop for his conquests. The recent restoration has managed to revive, with a contemporary feel, the atmosphere of this historic
building. The Hotel Monaco has 100 rooms furnished in grand style for those who want to stay in Venice and become part of its history. It is now
possible to organize conferences for over 250 people in the very heart of Venice. Another eight halls are available for seminars and receptions.

STARHOTEL SPLENDID VENICE– 4*
The hotel is located in the heart of the city between St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge. Overlooking romantic bridges and old Venetian
Palaces, the Splendid Venice features its own private dock on the canals and can be reached by gondola or water taxi. Innovative design and
subtle color combinations create unique and bright interiors. The public areas are exquisitely decorated in beige with a hint of wisteria,
punctuated with dashes of black and red. Large windows frame an evocative view of the Venetian ever awe-inspiring canal life.
The 165 bedrooms have been totally restored according to the Venetian traditional style re-interpreted with a modern touch, thanks to a
contemporary interior design which is, at the same time, elegant. The pearl-grey color of walls, embellished with hand-painted wisteria

ORIENTATION TOUR
On foot visit the main highlights of Venice with a private guide: St. Mark's square where you will learn the history that lies behind the walls
of its most famous landmarks; the Basilica and its Byzantine heritage, the Doge's Palace and its adjoining prisons. St Mark’s Basilica, a superb
example of the Romanesque-Byzantine style with five cupolas, was built in the 10th Century to house the body of St. Mark the Evangelist.
The facade features five portals decorated in splendid marbles and mosaics. The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) was the residence of the
Doge and the seat of the main government departments. As one walks through its rooms the history and glory of the Venetian republic is
revealed in its paintings and sculptures.
Day 1 - Dinner
TAVERNA LA FENICE
La Fenice restaurant is known in Venice as Taverna La Fenice, a name given by writer Gabriele d’Annunzio during the years of the First World War.
Not many restaurants can make that claim. This charming, historic, romantic restaurant has stood beside the world-famous La Fenice opera
house since 1907. Think ochre stucco, window boxes, fine Italian dining and superb Italian service in a traditional setting with fresh flowers,
suffused light and a delightful terrace at the front of the restaurant surrounded by screens and plants. Even the presence of tour groups doesn’t mar the professional service or the romantic atmosphere. Dishes include La Fenice’s own carpaccio, risotto with scampi and rocket, tagliatelle
with cream sauce and wild mushrooms, and turbot roasted with potatoes and tomato sauce. The wine list matches the excellence of the carte.
Day 2 - Tour
MURANO , BURANO & TORCELLO ISLANDS
Enjoy a Full day tour discovering the two renowned islands in front of Venice, MURANO , BURANO and TORCELLO.
The group will enjoy lunch in Torcello at the famous Locanda Cipriani. In the afternoon, visit of the island and transfer back to Venice.
Alternative : tour of Murano and Burano Islands with lunch at Da Romano Restaurant in Burano. In Murano, visit of a very renowned
glassblowing factories, while in Burano the group will have the chance to see a lace demonstration.
BURANO
The island was probably settled by the Romans, and in the 6th century was occupied by people from Altino, who named it for one of the gates of
their former city. Two stories are attributed to how the city obtained its name. One is that it was initially founded by the Buriana family, and
another is that the first settlers of Burano came from the small island of Buranello, c. 8 km to the south.
Although the island soon became a thriving settlement, it was administered from Torcello and had none of the privileges of that island or of
Murano. It rose in importance only in the 16th century, when women on the island began making lace with needles, being introduced to such a
trade via Venetian-ruled Cyprus. When Leonardo da Vinci visited in 1481, he visited the small town of Lefkara and purchased a cloth for the main
altar of the Duomo di Milano. The lace was soon exported across Europe, but trade began to decline in the 18th century and the industry did not
revive until 1872, when a school of lacemaking was opened. Lacemaking on the island boomed again, but few now make lace in the traditional
manner as it is extremely time-consuming and therefore expensive.
Day 2- Tour (continued)
MURANO
Murano was settled by the Romans, then from the sixth century by people from Altino and Oderzo. At first, the island prospered as a fishing port
and through production of salt. It was also a centre for trade, through the port it controlled on Sant'Erasmo. From the eleventh century, it began
to decline as islanders moved to Dorsoduro. It had a Grand Council, like that of Venice, but from the thirteenth century Murano was ultimately
governed by a podestà from Venice. Unlike the other islands in the Lagoon, Murano minted its own coins.
In 1291, all the glassmakers in Venice were forced to move to Murano due to the risk of fires.[2] In the following century, exports began, and the
island became famous, initially for glass beads and mirrors. Aventurine glass was invented on the island, and for a while Murano was the main
producer of glass in Europe. The island later became known for chandeliers. Although decline set in during the eighteenth century, glassmaking is
still the island's main industry.
In the fifteenth century, the island became popular as a resort for Venetians, and palaces were built, but this later declined. The countryside of
the island was known for its orchards and vegetable gardens until the nineteenth century, when more housing was built.
Attractions on the island include the Church of Santa Maria e San Donato (known for its twelfth century Byzantine mosaic pavement and said to
house the bones of the dragon slain by Saint Donatus), the Church of San Pietro Martire with its splendid chapel of the Ballarin family built in
1506, and the Palazzo da Mula. Glass-related attractions include the many glassworks, some Mediaeval and most open to the public, and the
Glass Museum, housed in the large Palazzo Giustinian.
Day 2 - Tour (continued)
TORCELLO
There was a time, nearly 1,500 years ago, when Torcello was the largest and most important settlement in the Venetian Lagoon. Those days are
long gone: As silt from rivers on the mainland filled up the shallow waters around Torcello, trade became more difficult and malarial mosquitoes
bred. The 20,000 or so inhabitants gradually made their way to Venice, and today only a few dozen innkeepers, farmers, and other hardy souls
live on the largely abandoned island. Still, it's obvious even from the Burano waterfront that Torcello is worth a visit: A magnificent ByzantineItalian cathedral dating back to 639 A.D., the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, looms over the island with the Bell Tower and Church of Santa
Fosca alongside.
Day 2 – Lunch Option #1
LOCANDA CIPRIANI / TORCELLO
Locanda Cipriani was created by Giuseppe Cipriani and is still owned by the Cipriani family.
Giuseppe Cipriani - the world famous founder of Harry's Bar in Venice, Hotel Cipriani (also in Venice) and that other 'pearl' of the hotel business,
Villa Cipriani in Asolo - fell in love with the enchanting corner of the lagoon known as Torcello in the late 1920s. The Locanda became a literary
legend after Ernest Hemingway wrote 'Across the River and Through the Trees' during his stay there. He devoted whole pages of his novel to
Torcello and kept a special place in his heart for the island. Simple, elegant furnishings combined with polite, attentive service and culinary
delights based on reinterpretations of typical Venetian dishes which created the “Cipriani style” are the ingredients that have gone into the success of each and every one of Giuseppe Cipriani's restaurants. Still today, they make the Locanda Cipriani in Torcello a cut above the rest.
Day 2 – Lunch Option #2
DA ROMANO / BURANO
Half an hour away from Venice, in the middle of the lagoon, there is the wonderful island of Burano, well-known for the art of lace and its
colourful houses inhabitated by fishermen. Here, at the beginning of the 20th century, Romano Barbaro opened a restaurant for the inhabitants
of the island and the first tourists. In 1910 the first painters landed at the island and were fascinated by the magic atmosphere of this place.
Among the first artists there were Gino Rossi, umberto Moggioli, Pio Semeghini, Arturo Martini, Luigi Scopnich, that were important artists and
men of letters who loved Burano met. The restaurant "Da Romano" is one of the places that the "vips" of the 20th century most loved and
frequent, and one of the most charming artistic restaurants of Venice. "Da Romano" has always been managed by the Barbaro family, who
continues the tradition with love and ability, giving prestige and a pleasant hospitality to the restaurant. Here you can taste the typical dishes of
the lagoon cuisine: the risottos and fish dishes, famous for their refined simplicity that comes from an old gastronomic art.
Day 2 - Dinner
ANTICO MARTINI
Housed in an old historical palace, once the residence of Admiral Vettor Pisani and other celebrated Venetian families, the Antico Martini was
first established in 1720 under the name of Caffè San Fantin. After the opening of the Fenice Opera House in 1792, it became the favorite
meeting place of artists, intellectuals, singers and conductors who patronized the coffee-house for their after-theatre revelries. Afterwards the
name changed to "Martini", from the surname of the owner who ran it from 1863 to 1884, and since 1921 it has belonged to the Baldi family,
now at its third generation, who has launched it as a deluxe restaurant, the favorite not only of dedicated gourmets, but also of other famous
names.
Day 3 - Tour
HALF DAY TOUR OF PADOVA
The origins of Padua can be traced back over 3000 years of history. One of the most important cities in both Roman and Medieval times, its
Medieval historic city center remains almost perfectly intact. Padua was once a flourishing center of humanist and Renaissance culture. The
presence of illustrious names such as Francesco Petrarca and Galileo Galilei can still be felt today, and there are many works by Donatello, Titian
and Veronese to be admired. Places to visit: the Museum of Applied and Decorative Arts, the Amento and Donato Sartori International Mask
Museum, and the Minici Zotti Pre-cinema Collection Museum. There are enchanting Villas and Castles such as Villa Selvatico Sartori, Villa Elmo
Capodilista and Villa Contarini. Padua is likened to Venice for its web of navigable canals, along the Brenta River, from Padua to Battaglia and
Monselice, from Padua to Saccolongo and from Pontelongo to Chioggia. The surrounding area is of great natural and manmade beauty, from the
Euganei Hills to the Ecclesiastical buildings such as the Monteortone Sanctuary and the Benedettina Abbey of Praglia.
*WALKING TOUR: Guests will take a half day guided walking tour around Padova. The walking tour will include a visit to Basilica di Sant’Antonio,a
famed church whose reconstruction took place over a period of 70 years from 1238-1310. The basilica features works by world
reknowned artists such as the Equestrian Monument of Donatello and the Virgin of the Pillar by Stefano da Ferrara, as well as various gothic
chapels, and antique artifacts.
Day 3 - Tour
GONDOLA RIDE
After a visit to Padova and enjoying a free afternoon in Venice, guests can enjoy a relaxing, classic Venetian gondola ride. Discover Venice
through the enchanting maze of its channels. The Grand Canal, Venice's “Main Street”, slices through the heart of the city, dividing it in two. It is
crossed by three bridges and seven ferry points. The canal is lined with magnificent palaces, built over the course of 500 years and each a
masterpiece of architecture and style. During the day, the canal is as busy as the main street of any city, with water busses, taxis, ferries, and
gondolas.
30/40 mins ride / up to 5 pax per Gondola
Day 3 – Private Visit and Concert
PRIVATE VISIT AND ORGAN CONCER AT ST. MARK’S BASILICA
Saint Mark's Basilica is a monument made unique by both its wealth of history and the magnificence of its façade and interior. In essence, it is a
splendid workshop, where, through the centuries, great Italian and European artists worked. Its distinguishing Byzantine character appears on
the great mosaics illustrating St. Marco's tales, as well as the scenes of the Old and New Testament. Venice's greatness has always been reflected
in the Basilica's enrichment: during the centuries the Venetians embellished it with precious objects and works of art brought in from the most
distant places, thus creating a grand, compact monument. The mellow light falling from above which glitters on the vaults in the golden mosaics
seems to divide the earthly world from the supernatural. The extent of artistic, iconographic and religious contents and the variety of historical
implications explaining the role the Basilica played during the centuries are here introduced according to an accurate division by subjects and by
various levels of examination. After closure (19.30 / 20.30 mid week and 19.45 / 20.45 holidays and weekends), upon availability, it is possible to
plan an exclusive tour of the basilica for the group.
In addition, we can also provide 20 mins of a private organ Concert

Day 4 - Tour
PINAULT FOUNDATION @ PUNTA DELLA DOGANA
With its triangular shape, Punta della Dogana split the Grand Canal from the Giudecca Canal. As center for contemporary art , the former
monumental port of the city present a permanent exhibition of works from François Pinault Collection.
Since June 6th 2009, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana have presented the exhibition Mapping the Studio, which brings together a selection
of works from the collection of François Pinault. Furthermore the exhibit has rebuilt the course of the studio, from conception to the inner world
of the artist, up to the integration with the private collection.
PUNTA DELLA DOGANA PROJECT
Tadao Ando drew up his plans for the new centre quickly. In effect, if one looks at his drawings one sees that, from the beginning, the broad
outlines of the project were clear in his mind. The characteristic layout of the former warehouses, which occupy the triangular tongue of land
where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal, was to be maintained. And while extensive work on the foundations was to be carried out –
to safeguard the structure from humidity and high water – the layout of the existing lofts was to be modified in order to create a space able to
house the artworks of the François Pinault Collection. At a point almost dead-centre of the triangular floor plan, Ando immediately envisioned
the creation of a new space standing the entire height of the building: a sort of pivot for the entire layout. This would occupy one of the middle
warehouse aisles and was to be created in smooth and polished cement, a material that is now a recognized leitmotif of Ando’s architecture.
This axial point – through which run all the routes within the structure – forms a cube, rising vertically within the volume of the building.
The work of restoration had to remove the unwanted accretions that had accumulated over time, with the new partition walls, stairs, walkways
and service facilities all clearly identified as such. In effect, there is no attempt to disguise these new additions within the old body of the
structure. Instead, there is a continual play of juxtaposition – almost as if Ando’s intention was to insert within the ancient building new volumes
and levels that seem to mark out the stratifications added over time, organizing them into a veritable spectacle of the structure’s own history. Finally, he had the idea of creating gates for the water entrances that are explicit quotations of the wonderful gate that Carlo Scarpa designed in
1956. The design of these new doors and windows, though very modern, effectively employed Venetian traditional craft. Tadao Ando has thus
succeeded in establishing a dialogue between old and new elements, creating a link among the history of the building, its present and its future.
Day 4 - Tour
PINAULT FOUNDATION @ PUNTA DELLA DOGANA
Day 4 - Lunch
Alla Madonna
Located in one of the nicest spots in the beautiful city of Venice, the trattoria alla Madonna welcomes you. The restaurant was opened in 1954
by its present owner Mr. Fulvio Rado. Historically an old Venetian osteria complete with vineyard, this trattoria has preserved its style and quality
in preparing traditional dishes. Celebrities and prominent individuals often dine in this restaurant, especially when searching for an informal and
discrete corner and a quick but efficient service. Nevertheless, the restaurant hosts a variety of clients, and the place is suitable for any occasion.
As it stands near Rialto, nearby the city’s fish and vegetable market, the food is always guaranteed to be fresh.
Alternative Tours
Venice of Diversities / the Jewish Ghetto - HD
The Jewish Ghetto in Venice is the oldest ghetto in the world and was established in 1516 by the Ruling Council of Venice. There are 4
synagogues in Venice of different sizes; three are Ashkenazi, and one is Sephardic (Schola Spagnola). The Schola Spagnola synagogue is
breathtaking inside with a touch of Byzantine and a definite Venetian flavor. The Chuppah used during the service dates several hundred years.
There is a Jewish Museum in the Ghetto which provides short tours of two or three of the synagogues. Also, shabat services are held Fridays in
the Spanish Synagogue. There is a kosher restaurant (Gam-Gam), Chabas Lubavitcher, a bookshop, and many shops selling Jewish related
products. Located in the Ghetto is an excellent second-hand bookshop (Old World Books) which sells books in English and Italian about both
Venice and Italy.
Visit the Schiavoni School: The flourishing Dalmatian community resident in Venice obtained permission to build its own brotherhood, with the
"school" as its physical and symbolic meeting place, thanks to a decree issued by the Council of Ten on the 19th May, 1451. Initially placed in the
Hospice of St. Catherine, the school was rebuilt in 1551 by Giovanni De Zan, guardian of the Arsenal and a pupil of Sansovino. The two ordered
facade, crowned by a tabernacle with an octagonal window, displays the serene Sansovinian composition, as well as the ceiling of the lower hall
with its tempera-painted rafters which recalls the Sansovino style, interrupted only by an original asymetricity between the two windows on
either side of the doorway, one mullioned and the other square. The tour will finish with a visit to the Orthodox Church, built in 1539. It is a
beautiful example of a late Renaissance church and absolutely worth a visit.
Alternative Tours
The Venetian Ateliers
Guests can choose this as an alternative to any previously proposed tour.
Bevilacqua
After the period at Palazzo Labia, Luigi Bevilacqua moved to its present
premises in the Santa Croce distric, where the old looms found a
permanent home. The Venice premises now house part of the production
facilities – with 25 hand operated looms – plus the warehouse and
showrooms. Owned completely by the family, in recent years the company
has sizeably developed both its national and internations trade.
The 18°-century looms and warpers belonged to the Venetian silk weaving
school, and up until the introduction of the Jacquard machine (around
1850) they had always been used manually. The company’s famouse
historical archives hold more than 3.500 pattern-design, all Bevilacqua
originals.
Rubelli Collection Fine Textures
The Rubelli collection brings together age-old Venetian know-how
and the passion of five generations.
The ancient textile tradition has produced a rich and varied
collection which can be adapted to both contemporary and classic
interiors and whose high-quality materials (silk, cotton, linen and
wool) are manufactured with skill, combining ancient and craft
techniques with cutting-edge technology to produce luxury
lampas, liseré, laminates, crepe textures, raised prints, etc.
The Rubelli historical archive, housed in the celebrated
Renaissance palazzo Ca’ Corner Spinelli, is a collection of over
6000 textile records which can be dated from the end of the
fifteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century. The
collection was begun in the second half of the nineteenth century.
