DuPont + The U.S. Conference of Mayors Let’s Get To Work! A PARTNERSHIP OF THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF MAYORS AND DUPONT DuPont + The U.S. Conference of Mayors The DuPont-USCM partnership, Cities United for Science Progress (CUSP) has helped mayors dramatically change their cities for the better. Now in its 9th year, our partnership continues to grow stronger. We will add $375,000 to more than $4 million in lead-safety grants already awarded. Having visited schools in close to 150 cities, leading engineers from DuPont and mayors will visit many more students. DuPont also will offer new ways to improve energy efficiency, by offering building construction training and making solar technology more cost effective. Lastly, DuPont will work with mayors to make city workplaces safer while saving money. Using science and proven leadership, DuPont is making a positive impact on the world. Along with the USCM, this can mean a tremendous plus for mayors all across America. Making cities healthier for kids, inspiring them to do the same Grants + Programs Nurturing the health and minds of children has been at the forefront of the DuPont-USCM partnership since its inception. Of key importance is the Lead-Safe...for Kids’ Sake grant program, awarded to cities with the most effective plans to increase lead-safety. Over $4 million has been put to work in more than 40 cities, contributing to significant declines in elevated blood lead levels*. For 2010, $375,000 will be awarded for lead-safety programs, the winning cities to be chosen in May and recognized at the USCM Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City, June 2010. Science in the School Day recognizes the value of helping mayors inspire tomorrow’s engineers to build better cities, if not a better world. For 8 years, mayors and DuPont top engineers have brought science to over 30,000 students at 350 schools in 150 cities. Here, the genius of DuPont becomes kid-friendly through hands-on experiments, contests and other activities – from basic science to alternative power. Year after year this has proven as much fun for mayors as students. With mayors, principals, teachers and students all benefiting from the DuPont-USCM partnership, Science in the School Day continues to be the preeminent USCM education program. Building Media, Inc (BMI),a wholly-owned subsidiary of DuPont, develops multi-media training focused on energy-related topics in the built environment. As a USCM key technical outreach partner, BMI has a proven history of educating local and state governments on how to implement better building practices, understand building code changes and educate consumers on conserving energy. BMI and the USCM have partnered on several Department of Energy grant funding opportunities and we hope to be successful in continuing to bring federal resources back to our member mayors in 2010. BMI’s expertise is unique and, in many ways, unparalleled. Respected building industry experts, with extensive technical and field experience, are key resources and educators for BMI’s on-line training curriculum. BMI’s Learning Management Systems utilize all facets of multi-media – including online training, social networking, video production and content distribution to bring the latest information to its customers. Topics span the most critical current and future issues. In one example, BMI educated constituents on new code compliance and provided training on proper follow up checks and inspections. Weatherization, building product technology, and basic building science are other examples of topics extensively covered. All content is easy-to-understand and simple to learn, with on-line testing to gauge progress and understanding. DuPont, through BMI, provides the best building science knowledge to the construction industry and, with USCM, to mayors across the U.S. Inform + Support Helping solar energy become a viable reality. DuPont believes that science and innovation are the key to addressing the energy challenges we face nationally and globally – solar energy one of several critical components. DuPont is a leading material and technology supplier to the photovoltaic (PV) industry, and offers a broad and growing portfolio of solutions that are designed to work together to help increase the efficiency and lifetime of solar modules. DuPont is working with the USCM to increase our cities’ access to solar energy. At the heart of this initiative is the DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions’ Solar Technology Education Program (STEP). The purpose of STEP is to help accelerate solar adoption through focused education and support drawn from DuPont leading expertise. Specific STEP objectives include: Educate non-industry professionals as to the science of solar energy building technologies. The focus: Solar as a renewable and environmentally responsible energy source to promote sustainable development and improved quality of life. Assist mayors and staff in targeted legislative policy or set asides related to areas that align with DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions key areas of expertise; such as system performance and innovative, emerging technologies. Share technical expertise and options to help cities make well-informed decisions as to solar installations. The expectation is to help accelerate adoption of solar energy. In applying STEP, DuPont is helping cities drive solar strategies to meet specific policy objectives. It is defining what needs to be accomplished through collaboration with other industry groups, and where additional support can accelerate solar adoption. Not only can this benefit local mayors and constituents, it benefits the larger global community as part of the DuPont long-term sustainability goals. Consult + Protect Increasing worker safety, reducing workplace costs. DuPont is considered one of the world’s safest companies. For more than 30 years, DuPont Safety Resources has been helping clients protect their people, facilities and operations by implementing processes and systems that enable sustainable cultural improvements, developed through 200 years of DuPont safety and operational experience. DuPont Safety Resources programs and blended learning solutions are recognized around the world for their ability to significantly enhance an organization’s knowledge about safety and how to make it an integral part of their lives, both on the job and off. DuPont Safety Resources leverages this experience to help cities protect its workers while reducing safety-related expenditures. The realized savings can be reinvested to assist mayors with bottom-line budgetary matters. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) is one such example. With the help of DuPont, LACMTA improved the safety of both employees and passengers while lowering cost of operations. LACMTA was able to reduce total workers compensation ultimate losses by 54 percent and lost work days 47 percent. LACMTA was able to take advantage of a full range of DuPont Safety Resources consulting and training services. Today, DuPont is helping other cities achieve similar successes – improve safety, save money, and ultimately discover hidden dollars to devote to other projects. PROTECTING THOSE WHO PROTECT US. DuPont Products Focus on Safety: DuPont™ Kevlar®, Nomex®, Tyvek® DuPont is committed to protecting law enforcement, fire fighters and first responders with innovative products that help enable them to perform their jobs as safely as possible. We make products such as DuPont™ Kevlar® and Nomex® advanced fibers and DuPont™ Tyvek® nonwovens that are used in body armor, helmets, turnout gear and other equipment that protect the lives of those who protect us. Among the company’s latest technologies: • DuPont™ Kevlar® XP™, a patented technology that stops bullets faster by providing ballistic and trauma protection in a more comfortable body armor solution. Both DuPont and independent tests show that Kevlar® XP™ consistently stops bullets within the first three layers of a vest designed with a total of 11 layers. The remaining layers of Kevlar® XP™ absorb the energy of the bullet, resulting in less trauma, or backface deformation, to the vest wearer. Kevlar® XP™ typically provides a 15 percent reduction in backface deformation and at least a 10 percent lighter weight vest design against the most challenging National Institute of Justice (NIJ) level IIIA threat, a .44 magnum bullet. • DuPont™ Nomex® On Demand™, introduced as the first “smart-fiber” technology that helps protect lives, is an example of DuPont’s commitment to market-driven science, matching many years of experience in high-performance fibers with an understanding of the evolving needs of the fire services industry. The “smart-fiber technology,” initially used in thermal liners in firefighter turnout gear, detects emergency conditions and automatically expands to trap more air for 20 percent greater thermal performance. In emergency conditions, air temperatures can exceed hundreds of degrees. Nomex® On Demand™ is specifically engineered to react and expand when temperatures reach 250 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Once activated, it continues to provide maximum thermal protection, when and where it is needed. Take Action + Apply Now Lead-Safe…for Kids’ Sake! Grant. 750 words can make a world of difference.
