STORM SAFETY
Better building
materials
Texas weather can change fast. We
all know it. We’ve all seen it. That’s why,
especially during storm season, it pays
to be prepared. But what does that
mean? It means buying better building
materials.
Things like wind-rated garage doors,
impact-resistant windows, and siding
that can withstand hail and flying
debris. But the simplest fix is doors
that open out instead of in. That’s what
researchers at the Insurance Institute for
Home and Business Safety suggest. In
a wind event — whether it’s a tornado or
strong storm — your home’s openings
are its weakest point. If just one is
compromised — like strong wind blowing
open your front door or debris breaking
a window — enough air can rush into the
home to bring it to the ground.
A new kind of magazine experience
