Chamides led the Golden Eagles to an 18-4-1 overall record and to the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division championship in 2009. Cal State L.A. also earned its first-ever No. 1 national ranking during the season and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region. The Golden Eagles were ranked seventh in the nation in the last regular-season poll. The 18 wins were the second-most in the program’s history and the most since 1981. Cal State L.A. hosted the NCAA Division II West Regional and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 5-3, in an exciting semi-final match before dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the championship match. Chamides was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second time in men’s soccer and was also awarded the conference’s top honor for the women’s team as well in 2009. He has quickly transformed the Golden Eagles into one of the top teams in the West Region. Chamides has led the Golden Eagles to a 80-49-16 overall record in his first seven years, including a 55-23-11 mark, four consecutive trips to the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament and three appearances in the NCAA playoffs over the past four years. Chamides has guided the Golden Eagles into the regional championship match in all three NCAA appearances. The 55 wins over the past four seasons are the most over a four-year span for the program since 1981-84. Chamides Quick Facts Cal State L.A. has earned 29 All-CCAA, 16 All-Region and six All-America awards during Chamides’ tenure. That total includes a pair of CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year award. Overall Record The Golden Eagles had a program record four All-Americans in 2009. In addition, six players earned All-CCAA 80-49-16 (7 Seasons) honors and four players earned All-West Region honors. Cal State L.A. also had a player earn CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict VIII honors for the first time. The Golden Eagles recorded a 13-5-4 overall record in 2008 and were ranked 14th in the nation in the final CCAA Coach of the Year NSCAA poll. Cal State L.A. was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation during the regular season and spent the last nine 2 (2004, 2009) weeks rated in the national Top-25. The Golden Eagles were 9-3-2 in conference play and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight year. Cal State L.A. lost a hard-fought contest to top-seed Sonoma State in the first round, but the Golden Region Coach of the Year Eagles got their revenge in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the next week, ousting Sonoma State on penalty kicks 1 (2006) to advance to the regional championship game. Cal State L.A. had five players earn All-CCAA honors and four receive All-West Region recognition in 2008. In 2007, Cal State L.A. posted an 11-6-4 record in 2007 and recorded its second straight winning season for the CCAA Tournament Appearances first time since 1993-94. 4 (06, 07, 08, 09) It was an impressive follow-up to the sensational 2006 season when the Golden Eagles enjoyed their best year since 1992 and finished the campaign ranked 18th in the nation. Cal State L.A. captured the CCAA South Division title NCAA Tournament Appearances and advanced to the NCAA regional championship game. Chamides was named the 2006 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to 3 (2006, 2008, 2009) 13-8-2 overall record. He led Cal State L.A. to its first NCAA playoff berth since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first NCAA postseason victory since 1992 by knocking off No. 2 seed Seattle Pacific, 2-1, in a first-round match. The Golden Eagles battled to a 3-3 tie with Seattle University in the regional title game before falling in penalty kicks. CCAA Division Championships The 13 wins were the most in season for Cal State L.A. since 1994 and the Golden Eagles recorded their first 2 (2006, 2009) winning season since 1996. In 2005, Chamides guided the Golden Eagles to a 9-9 overall record and Cal State L.A. had both the CCAA Player of the Year in Morten Marthinson and CCAA Freshman of the Year in Kyle Hewitt. Players Under Chamides In 2004, Chamides earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors for the first time when he led the Golden Eagles to All-Americans: 6 a 9-9-1 overall record and the program’s first .500 record since 1996. All-Region: 16 Chamides took over the program in 2003 and guided the team to a 7-8-4 record, which marked a significant turnaround from 2002 when the Golden Eagles were 5-13. Academic All-District: 1 He also served as an assistant coach for Chivas USA of Major League Soccer for four seasons. In 2006, he CCAA Player of the Year: 1 worked under MLS Coach of the Year and current U.S. National Team head coach Bob Bradley and he also worked for CCAA Newcomer of the Year: 1 three years with former Chivas USA Head Coach Preki. In his time with Chivas USA, the roster included Claudio Suarez, CCAA Freshman of the Year: 2 Ramon Ramirez, Paco Palencia and Jonathan Bornstein. Chivas USA reached the MLS playoffs in just its second season of existence in 2006 and Bornstein was named the 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year. All-CCAA: 29 Chamides came to Cal State L.A. from the San Jose Earthquakes of the Major League Soccer, where he served as the Senior Director of Soccer from 2000-02. While in the role, Chamides was directly involved in all soccer-related facets, including roster development. He helped build a San Jose squad that won the 2001 MLS Cup one year after having the league’s worst record. The roster included USA National Team members Landon Donovan and Jeff Agoos. From 1997-99, Chamides was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. The Flagler women’s team improved from 2-15 before his arrival to 12-7 in 1998. The men’s squad was ranked as high as 17th in the country and four Flagler players earned All-America honors during his tenure. During that time span, Chamides was also a coach in the Florida Olympic Development Program and was hired as the head coach in 1999 of the USL’s expansion Jacksonville Jade. In 1995, Chamides got his first collegiate coaching job when he was hired as an assistant for the University of Massachusetts’ women’s soccer program. During his two years in Amherst, Massachusetts was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country, won two Atlantic-10 Conference titles, made two consecutive “Sweet 16” appearances in the NCAA Division I playoffs and compiled a 30-9-3 record. His first head coaching job came in 1993 when he worked with both the junior varsity and varsity boys soccer teams at his alma mater, Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. That same year, he was also tabbed by then-Virginia head coach and former USA National Team coach Bruce Arena to serve as a staff coach at the University of Virginia’s summer soccer camps. In 1994, he also revived the S.C. Gjoa U-16 boys club team in Brooklyn, leading the squad to the State Cup. Chamides played in college for NCAA Division I Lafayette from 1989-92 and helped the Leopards to a Patriot League runner-up finish in 1990. He was a team captain as a senior. Lafayette posted a winning record in each of his four seasons and had an overall mark of 43-32-5. He owns an “A” license from the U.S. Soccer Federation and has an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Chamides earned a Masters of Science degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts. Chamides and his wife, Nancy, were married during the summer of 2005 and celebrated the birth of their son, Ryan, in July of 2008. Chris Chamides Head Coach 3 www.csulaathletics.com Assistant Coaches A former Cal State L.A. assistant coach with experience in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Michael Jacobson returns for his fourth season in his second stint with the Golden Eagles. He is the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Jacobson rejoined the Golden Eagle program prior to the 2007 season. In Jacobson’s first three seasons since his return to Cal State L.A., the Golden Eagle men are 42-15-9 overall, while the Golden Eagle women are 37-18-9. Jacobson helped the Golden Eagles to a tremendously successful 2009 season. Cal State L.A.’s men’s team was 18-4-1 overall and reached the NCAA Division II West Region championship match for the second straight season and for the third time in the past four years. The Golden Eagles earned their first-ever No. 1 national ranking and received the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Region. The 18 wins were the second-most in the program’s history and the most since 1981. Cal State L.A. also captured the CCAA South Division and advanced to the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament for a fourth straight year. The women’s team enjoyed a historic season and won its first-ever CCAA Championship. The Golden Eagles set new program records for wins (17) and goals scored (53) and also achieved their highest-ever national ranking (No. 6) during the season. Cal State L.A. claimed the No. 1 seed in the West Region and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA playoffs. Jacobson also helped the Golden Eagles achieve great success in 2008. Cal State L.A.’s men’s team reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the second time in three years and advanced to the West Region championship game. The Golden Eagles also qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for a third straight year and concluded the season with a national ranking of 14. The women’s team battled through a string of pre-season injuries and a slow start to finish with a 5-1-2 record over its last eight conference matches. Cal State L.A. finished with a 6-6-2 mark in the CCAA, its third straight year of .500 or better. The Golden Eagles reached unprecedented heights with Jacobson’s assistance in 2007. Cal State L.A.’s women’s team reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in the program’s history and also qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time. The Golden Eagle women posted a 13-6-4 record and earned a final national ranking of 15. The men’s team also reached the CCAA Championship Tournament and finished the season with an 11-6-4 record. Jacobson came to Cal State L.A. after a successful run as the Assistant Director of Coaching for South Bay Soccer Club. He was the head coach for various age group teams between the ages of 9-19. With the emphasis on development at the youth level, Jacobson oversaw coaches and players. He also helped guide numerous players to compete in college soccer as well as gave opportunities for placement on Olympic Development teams and participation on age-level U.S. National teams. He has coached numerous players who are currently playing at the professional level who came out of the South Bay Soccer Club. Jacobson was introduced to the CCAA in 2001-02 when he was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jacobson helped put together a season that ended with the Toros finishing as the NCAA Division II National finalist. During that year, Jacobson coached five All-Conference players, the CCAA Player of the Year and three All-Americans. Jacobson was the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Cal State L.A. in 2002-03 and created the planning, development and administration of all phases with both programs. He also provided training and fitness regimes that included weight training and a spring season running program. Prior to moving out West, Jacobson was the assistant men’s coach at Division I Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 2000-01. Jacobson helped the Bisons beat then-No. 8 ranked South Carolina, the first victory any team from Bucknell had beaten a team nationally-ranked in the Top 10. The team then made the conference playoffs and had the Defender of the Year in Bill Epley. Jacobson started his coaching career at Plattsburg State University in 1998. He holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation and received his USSF National Goal Keeping license in January of 2010. Jacobson enjoyed a successful playing career collegiately at Syracuse University, where he was a four-year starter. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Syracuse in 1998 and has furthered his education by completing his Master’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2008. He was an alternate member of the U.S. Maccabbi team and then played professionally for two years in Albany for the Allycats and the Myrtle Beach Sea Dawgs in South Carolina. Jacobson and his wife, Nicole, reside in Redondo Beach with their three-year-old son, Jack and daughter Rachel, who was born in March of 2009. Started all 23 games for Cal State L.A. last season and helped solidify a defense that was one of the nation’s best. Was key part of a defense that allowed only 20 goals all season and permitted one or fewer goals 20 times, including eight shutouts. Appeared in 13 matches and started three times for Cal State L.A. Picked up the first assist of his Cal State L.A. career on a goal by Derrek Horn against Western Washington on Oct. 23. Was a big part of the Golden Eagle defense once again. Team allowed one or fewer goals in 11 of the 13 matches he played, including two shutouts. 2008: Had an outstanding second season for the Golden Eagles and earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors for a second year in a row. Appeared in 19 games and started 17 times, including the last 15 of the season. Overcame early-season injury to once again perform as one of the top defenders in the conference. Team Awards & Accolades allowed one or fewer goals in 15 of the 19 matches he played in last season and recorded seven shutouts. Earned CCAA All-Academic honors. 2008 2007: Had a tremendous first season for the Golden Eagles and was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year. Also earned All-CCAA honorable mention. Appeared and started in 20 of Cal State L.A.’s 21 games. Was named the All-CCAA (2nd) team’s Newcomer of the Year. Helped a defense that allowed only 22 goals all season and recorded seven shutouts. The company also competed for the “Best Logotype” award together with five other companies from all over Sweden in the business competition for young entrepreneurs. Team won conference championships both years and reached the state semi-finals during his freshman year. Rocklin HS: Competed in soccer, basketball, baseball and track and field. Earned first-team All-League honors as a junior and senior. Was the team Most Valuable Player and earned first-team All-Metro honors as a senior. Team won two league and section championships. Was a captain of a league-champion basketball team and earned All-League honors and also earned All-League honors as a senior in baseball. Was nominated for Athlete of the Year in the Sacramento area and was the runner-up for Athlete of the Year at his high school. Personal: Son of Bret and Jane Faulkner. Majoring in communications. Enjoys video games. Lists playing for a section basketball championship at Arco Arena, scoring a hat trick in the first round of playoffs as a junior and scoring a goal in the 100th minute in the section semifinal as his most exciting experiences in sports. Chris Rangel #8 Senior • Midfielder • 5’5” • La Mesa 2009: Had a successful season with the Golden Eagles. Appeared in 17 of the team’s 23 games. Picked up a pair of assists during the season. Had the assist on a goal by Spencer Tripp against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 27. Added an assist in the Golden Eagles’ next game on a goal by Tripp at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 2. 2008: Was hampered by injuries and appeared in only two games for the Golden Eagles. Made his Cal State L.A. debut at Humboldt State on Sept. 26 and played again against Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 5 before missing the remainder of the season. Received a medical redshirt. Cal State Bakersfield: Played for two seasons with the Roadrunners. Appeared in nine games and made five starts in 2007. Played in 13 matches in 2006. Made his first career appearance for Cal State Bakersfield in a 4-1 win over Fresno Pacific (8-28-06). Scored his first career goal in a 3-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona (10-22-06). Grossmont HS: Earned All-League honors on varsity as a senior. Was the team Most Valuable Player as a freshman. Also competed in track and field. Personal: Son of Nicolas and Maria Rangel. Golden Eagles Men’s Soccer 14 Jesse Owens Stadium Jesse Owens Stadium is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer, cross country and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June. In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982. The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.
