tah has a significant railroad history. Its landmark
accomplishment is the joining of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869 at Promontory
Summit. Twenty years later, an effort was begun
to connect the Heber Valley to the Wasatch Front
through Provo Canyon. Eleven miles of track was
laid. Then construction stopped. It would take
another 10 years before Heber Valley’s railway
would be completed. Years of controversy, lawsuits, challenges of steep grade, lobbying and hard
work finally resulted in the first railroad, originally
known as the Utah Eastern Railway. It was part of a
Denver & Rio Grand Western (D&RGW) branch line,
which officially opened on Sept. 29, 1899.
This shortline railroad served early
pioneers who settled the valley. It ran between Heber
City and Provo

during the 1930’s, more sheep were
shipped out of the Heber City Train Depot than
anywhere else in the nation. In 1922, the Union Pacific
Railroad constructed a branch from Park City to mines
west of Keetley. These cars shipped lead, zinc, and silver
ore from the mines.
Operation of the D&RGW’s Heber City branch came to
an end in 1967. After the line was abandoned there was
a move to rip up the tracks and use the train’s right-ofway to realign U.S. Hwy. 189. Community opposition
to the plan prevailed and the line reopened three years
later under private ownership as a recreational train.
This was made possible when a historic steam engine,
No. 618, and other equipment were brought up to Heber
City from Provo.
The railroad operated as the “Heber Creeper” during the 1970’s and 80’s, which picked up its nickname
from the engine’s slow speeds of 15 miles per hour and
less – especially as the train chugged over some stretches
up steep inclines and curves through
Provo Canyon.
The railroad track between Vivian
Park and Provo was later removed and
converted into a recreational hiking
trail, which was completed in 1996.
Today, the Heber Valley Railroad is
a non-profit organization owned by the
state of Utah. It is a beloved community treasure in the heart of Heber City.

The fishing at Deer Creek State Park &
Reservoir is among Utah’s finest and a great way to
relax in the quiet majestic mountains of Heber Valley.
The reservoir is known for its warm water, making

and a concrete boat-launching ramp, a 35-unit
