SAUBERT AND TESSON EARN SPOTS ON CFPA AWARDS
WATCH LISTS
• Drake University tight end Eric Saubert earned
a spot on the 2014 CFPA Tight End Award Watch
List, as announced by the College Football Performance Awards.
• As a sophomore last season, Saubert garnered
first team all-Pioneer Football League honors after
hauling in 47 passes for 549 yards and a pair of
touchdowns during his first season of competition.
Against PFL competition, he had two 100-yard
games against Butler and Valparaiso while
scoring both of his touchdowns against league
competition.
• Additionally, kicker Benjamin Tesson earned the
honor as well. As a freshman in 2013, Tesson
connected on five of his seven field goal attempts
and was perfect from inside 30 yards. He also
converted on 15 point after touchdown attempts.
In the win over Indianapolis, he was a perfect
3-of-3 with field goals of 52, 38 and 37 yards. His
52-yard make tied for the fifth-longest field goal in
program history.
FOX ADDS SIX NEW ASSISTANTS
• First-year Drake University head football coach
Rick Fox has six new assistants on his staff with
www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com
Brad Pole, Todd Stepsis, Allen Smith, Dominic
Robinson, Matt Purdom and Munir Prince joining
the Bulldogs.
• Of the six new assistant coaches, four have previous collegiate experience as coordinators while
Pole brings more than a decade of head coaching
experience to Fox’s staff.
• Pole will serve as the Bulldogs’ pass-game and
recruiting coordinator. The veteran coach has
more than three decades of collegiate coaching
experience most recently as the offensive coordinator at Morningside College in 2012-13. There
he helped guide the Mustangs to a 13-1 record
and an appearance in the NAIA national championship game.
• Stepsis will serve as Fox’s defensive coordinator
following six seasons in the same role at Division
II power Saginaw Valley State. There, he helped
coach the Cardinals to a 44-23 record, threeconsecutive GLIAC North Division titles and three
NCAA playoff berths.
• Allen Smith joins Fox’s staff following six seasons at St. Scholastica where he was the defensive coordinator the past two seasons. At Drake,
he will oversee the team’s linebackers. In his
two seasons guiding St. Scholastica’s defense,
the Saints boasted the top defense in the Upper
Midwest Athletic Conference while winning a pair
of conference titles with two NCAA Division III
playoff appearances.
• Drake’s new cornerbacks coach, Dominic Robinson, boasts an impressive background both as
a coach and student-athlete. A graduate of Florida
State and two-sport standout for the Seminoles,
he was signed by the St. Louis Rams and also
drafted by the Minnesota Twins.
• In 2012 he founded 3D Sports Performance
in Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked many
camps and clinics alongside former Drake head
coach Chris Creighton, Rick Fox and the Drake
staff prior to Fox adding him to the staff at Drake.
• Matt Purdom, is no stranger to the Bulldogs as
he recently ended his five-year career at Drake
following an unfortunate career-ending knee injury
in a 2013 loss at UNI. The anchor of the offensive
line, he helped pave the way for the Bulldogs’
highest offensive output in eight years as a junior
in 2012.
• Munir Prince, who played collegiately at Notre
Dame and Missouri joins the staff after spending a
year on campus working with Drake IMG. He will
coach the team’s interior receivers and serve as
video coordinator. After suffering a career-ending
injury at Missouri, he worked as a student and
graduate assistant coach.
IN THE CLASSROOM
• As successful as the Bulldogs have been on the
field, they’ve been even more so in the classroom.
• Last season, a program-record 66 players were
named to the Pioneer Football League Academic
Honor Roll.
• A PFL-high 10 Bulldogs were also named to Academic All-PFL teams including current Bulldogs,
Andy Rice, Jack Beck, Aaron Johnson, Jacob
Dines, Taylor Coleman and Spencer Lee.
BULLDOGS AMONG THE BEST
• Drake ranks 17th in overall victories (588)
among the 143 schools that make up the Division
I Football Championships Subdivision (FCS).
• This week’s game will be the 1,111th in 121
years of football for the school, dating back to the
initial campaign in 1893.
•The Bulldogs’ all-time record is 588-494-29
4
(.539).
HEAD COACH U
• Two former Drake Bulldogs, Dave Doeren and
Charlie Partridge, are currently serving as head
coaches at FBS programs.
• Doeren, who was a tight end from 1990-93 is in
his second season as the head coach at North
Carolina State.
• Partridge was a three-year starter at defensive
end and team captain during his senior season in
1995. He is in his first season as the head coach
at Florida Atlantic.
• Both began their coaching careers at Drake following their graduation.
• Only six colleges and universities have produced
more current FBS head coaches than Drake.

DES MOINES, Iowa – – The Drake University
football team fought against an early deficit before
ultimately falling to crosstown foe Grand View,
45-22, in Saturday’s season opener at Drake
Stadium.
The Bulldogs (0-1) and Vikings (1-0) met for
the fifth time in the series before a crowd of 7,248,
the biggest Drake Stadium crowd since 2007. The
Vikings earned their second win all-time against
the Bulldogs thanks largely to a 28-0 first-quarter
lead.
“We can’t come out and play like that in the first
quarter, especially against a talented team like
Grand View,” said first-year Drake head coach
Rick Fox. “Now we fought hard and I couldn’t be
more proud of our guys, and we started to show
the way we were capable of playing. We needed
to get the ball in endzone a couple of times when
we were close, but we can’t dig ourselves that
kind of hole.”
Grand View racked up 518 yards of total offense in the win as quarterback Derek Fulton
threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns while
rushing for 123 yards on 18 carries.
“Offensively, their quarterbacks are so good,”
Fox said. “They both can run and do things with
the ball in their hands and they distribute the ball
so well that it’s tough to defend someone that has
so many weapons.”
The Bulldogs were led by Eric Saubert’s (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) seven catches for 80 yards
while Ryan McKeever (Omaha, Neb.) ran for 86
and Conley Wilkins (Overland Park, Kan.) had
two touchdowns in addition to his 62 yards rushing. John Hugunin (Oswego, Ill.) led the Drake
defense with 10 stops, seven of them solo.
Grand View dominated the opening quarter,
outgaining the Bulldogs 252-18 yards in total
offense to open up a 28-0 lead. Drake appeared
to have early momentum, forcing a Grand View
three-and-out on the Vikings’ first possession and
blocking the ensuing punt. However, the Bulldogs
couldn’t capitalize and punted the ball right back
to the Vikings. Seven plays and 86 yards later
Grand View found the endzone on a 16-yard pass
from Fulton to Jackson Petz.
The Vikings then scored on three of their next
four possessions, the first coming a 56-yard pass
from Fulton to Brady Roland and then a 35-yard
strike to Davion Hurst. The Vikings closed out the
first half with a 3-yard dive from Dorian Ballentine
on a drive keyed by an Nick Bush interception.
Drake added points early in the second quarter
on a 1-yard dive from Wilkins to cap a 13-play,
69-yard drive kept alive by Grand View penalties.
Drake’s defense got two more stops before the
Vikings tacked on another score on a 45-yard
interception return from Adam Wenck to make the
score 35-7 at halftime.
The momentum shifted briefly in the third
quarter as the Bulldogs took the ball 73 yards on
their first possession and scored on a Wilkins run

from six yards out. Wilkins rushed for 32 yards on
the drive before finding the endzone to make the
score 35-14 in favor of Grand View.
Unfortunately, the Vikings answered with a field
goal to extend their lead and added a sack on the
next Bulldog possession to end the quarter. On
Drake’s first play from scrimmage of the fourth
quarter, McKeever uncorked a 50-yard run to put
the Bulldogs into Viking territory. Ten plays later
quarterback Andy Rice (Stevens Point, Wis.)
found a wide open Andrew Yarwood (South Elgin,
Ill.) in the endzone. A Wilkins two-point conversion
shifted the momentum back in the Bulldogs’ favor
at 38-22.
An on-side kick caught the Vikings off guard
and set up the Bulldogs on the Grand View
48-yard line in hopes of staging a comeback. Unfortunately for Drake, that drive stalled and Grand
View answered with a scoring drive capped by a
30-yard touchdown strike from Fulton to Roland
to account for the final score with 4:54 left in the
game.
