It’s already been a
little over a month
since we met in
Rapid City for our
Annual Convention.
I am pretty sure that
everyone who attended had a great
time and probably learned a little
something – I know I learned a bit
about riding ATV’s through water
holes! Thank you to the SDADA
staff and the Rapid City host dealers for putting on a great show. A
special thank you to the vendors who paid to make it happen!
I am told from dealers in other states that the 30 or so dealers
that attended the SDADA convention in Rapid City was an
excellent turnout by today’s standards. With 100 dealers in our
association, I don’t think we should be satisfied with a 30%
attendance rate. It’s not going to happen overnight, but I think
with some effort we can get that number back over 50%.
One big thing we can do is to get the next generation of dealers involved. These folks are eager to get their feet wet – no
ATV analogy – and will bring new life to this association. I’m
talking about a person who is under the age of 40 years or has
less than 10 years of experience and is in line to become the
Dealer or General Manager. Over the next six months, the
SDADA staff will be contacting you to identify these people.
Once these folks are identified, we are going to make sure they
are involved in planning future conventions and have representation on the Board. We would also like to start some type of
golf or hunting events to help get some relationships started.
Myron tells me it shouldn’t be any problem finding sponsors to
fund these events! You can save a call from the staff by emailing the contact information for anyone in your organization that
fits into this group to me at [email protected] and I will
be happy to forward it on.
There are only 4 weeks before the kids head back to school.

June and July weather was
good, bad and ugly; depending where you live in
South Dakota. Damaging
hail storms have hit many
areas of the state causing
extensive damage to crops,
buildings and cars. The
devastating tornado that struck Wessington
Springs resulted in near total loss and total
loss to numerous businesses and homes.
One of our members, Springs Auto, was one
business that suffered total loss. If you watch the weather around this
country, you can quickly conclude that Mother Nature is in charge.
In response to several discussions, the SDADA has scheduled a golf event
in Sioux Falls for September 18th. This annual event was created around
a theme of "appreciation". We are hoping that dealerships and their business partners send their employees to this event as a "thank-you" for their
hard work and support. There will be flyers and registration materials sent
to SDADA Members in the near future. Please consider sending as many
of your employees that you can live without for 4 or 5 hours. I am sure
everyone will have a good time and greatly appreciate the dealers allowing
them to attend.
Many SDADA Members have been great supporters of the National Automobile Dealers Association's Dealers Election Action Committee (NADA
DEAC). We have an issue that needs to be fixed. Federal Election Law requires permission forms to be filed with the campaign fund administrator,
namely NADA. The SDADA has only around 50% of these forms on file at
NADA. In order to fix this problem, the SDADA Board has asked me to send
a blank form to each member. Therefore, I will be sending a blank form to
everyone by email. All you will need to do is print the form, sign it and email
or fax it back to the SDADA Office. We are hopeful this exercise will get us
much closer to 100% compliance.
On the 10th, 11th and 12th of this month, I attended the annual meeting of the Automotive Trade Association Executives (ATAE). This meeting
provides me the opportunity to find the problems in South Dakota are no
different than other states across this country. We talked about the current status of the franchise auto sales business and about where we are
headed in the next 10 years. Again, there was discussion about Tesla; it
seems that discussion will be going on and on. There was also continued
extensive discussion regarding the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau
(CFPB) and where they are headed. As a summary, it was a typical meeting
that included some depressing realities about the challenges we currently
face and probably will continue to face in the future. However, it is also a
time to spend with my peers from all across this country which is energizing and rejuvenating.

This year, 2014, is the year of the automobile recall. It’s only
July, yet vehicle manufacturers already have recalled more
vehicles this year than any other year in history.

Message
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been recalls for 37.5 million cars this year
in the U.S. The previous record was 30.8 million in 2004.
Despite that fact that faulty ignition switches at GM have
received the most of the attention, virtually every dealership in South Dakota
has been affected by recalls. Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Mazda, BMW,
Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Lexus and Kia have all had recalls in the last couple
of months on some model or part.
General Motors was the trend setter. After being burned by the ignition switch issue in the first month
as CEO at GM, it would seem that Mary Barra has decided to get all of the recalls out of the way right
away. GM vehicles make up about two-thirds of the vehicles that have been recalled with more than 25
million recalls in the U.S.
It seems other automakers are aggressively scheduling recalls now since GM is providing cover with all
of their headlines. No automobile manufacturer want to be accused of dragging their feet after watching
what has happened to GM.
Why all the recalls? Is it because cars are more complex (more electronics) than ever and there are so
many things that can go wrong? Is it because of faulty workmanship at the manufacturer level? Is it, as
Mary Barra suggested at GM, an "underlying cultural problem" (read "arrogance") for manufacturers?
Is it because people are keeping their cars longer than in the past?
Is it because of less manufacturer oversight of suppliers than in the past? Is it because of faulty workmanship at the supplier level? Is it because of the regulatory environment in our federal government? Is
it our litigious society?
I will suggest that it is a combination of all of the above factors and probably some other that I have not
listed. But the bottom line is that our customers want and need information about their vehicles.
Despite the consistent numbing reports of more recalls on the evening news, the dealers have been the
stars. We have taken this opportunity to talk to our customers. The dealerships have softened the blow
for GM and other OEMs.
Dealers are the front line contact for the manufacturers in any situation like this. The manufacturer may
call for a the recall, but people take their vehicle to our stores for the repair.
I hope that the manufacturers remember what an asset that the dealers are for them at times like this.
How soon will they revert to their "what have you done for me lately" attitude that they usual exhibit.

Springs Auto Vows to Return

A Wessington Springs business that has experienced adversity before has announced their intention to return to business after a June 18,
2014 tornado destroyed their auto dealership.
Springs Auto, Inc., announced their intentions
last week. "We want everyone to know that we
are still here and Springs Auto will be here into
the future, our plans are up in the air but reassured we will still be here," the Lawrence and
Ada Caffee family said.
The dealership was in the path of an F2 tornado
that also destroyed a large portion of the southeastern part of this town of approximately 1,000
people.
A late night fire on July 3, 2012 leveled their
business at its downtown location. Much of
their inventory was destroyed, but the fire hardly
slowed the family down as they opened at the
Dakota Avenue / Highway 34 dealership days
later.

Later in the week Lawrence Caffee told the True
Dakotan they were going to move their body shop
building (next to the bowling alley) to the southeast site. They have already placed a rented temporary office where the dealership once stood.
"We have to finish the cleanup and settle with
the insurance company. We’ve brought in some
vehicles and we’ve sold a few. A tornado victim
who lost her home and car, Rita Kolousek proved
her hometown loyalty by purchasing the first
Springs Auto vehicle following the storm.
I want to thank mayor Melissa Mebius for the
outstanding work she has done for all of us here
in Wessington Springs," he said.

Jeb Bush, Jay Leno and Beck Weathers to Keynote 2015 NADA Convention in San Francisco The four-day “Automotive Industry Event of the Year” runs Thursday, Jan. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 25
McLEAN, Va. (July 14, 2014) – San Francisco will host the 2015 National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention & Expo
from Thursday, Jan. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 25. This will be the 16th time that the NADA convention has been held in San Francisco
since 1948.
The keynote speakers include former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and NADA Chairman Forrest McConnell, III, on Friday, Jan. 23; Jay
Leno and NADA Vice Chairman Bill Fox on Saturday, Jan. 24; and inspirational speaker Beck Weathers on Sunday, Jan. 25.
Jeb Bush
Elected as the 43rd governor of the Florida in 1998, and re-elected by a wide margin in 2002, Gov. Bush
reformed education, cut taxes every year during his tenure and led the state to the highest job growth in
the nation. His second term ended in Jan. 2007. He currently runs his own consulting business, Jeb Bush
and Associates, with clients ranging from small technology start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. He is also
chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a national foundation focused on education reform;
co-chairman of the Barbara Bush Family Literacy Foundation; and chair of the National Constitution Center.
Bush is co-author of Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution, released in March 2013. He is the son
of former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush. He lives in Miami with his wife Columba, and they have three children
and three grandchildren.
Forrest McConnell
Forrest McConnell, III is the 2014 NADA chairman, and president of McConnell Honda/Acura in Montgomery,
Ala. He is a third-generation new-car dealer, attorney and represents Alabama’s franchised auto dealers on
NADA’s board of directors. The family started out in the business as Hupmobile and Scripps-Booth dealers in
1919, and through the years they have owned and operated multiple dealer franchises. As NADA chairman,
McConnell is currently promoting the consumer and manufacturer benefits of the franchised dealer network,
and leading NADA’s efforts through intense regulatory challenges facing dealers, such as efforts by the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to eliminate an auto dealer’s flexibility to discount interest rates on
consumer auto loans at dealerships.
Jay Leno
Jay Leno, an award-winning comedian/host and best-selling author of children’s books, hosted the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” for nearly two decades. Following in the footsteps of legendary NBC late-night hosts
Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, Leno became host of the “Tonight Show” in May 1992. Currently,
he is performing stand-up comedy in top venues across the U.S., and continues to work on his Web venture,
“Jay Leno’s Garage” which highlights his passion for automobiles. In his spare times, he enjoys working on his
collection of classic cars and motorcycles.

Bill Fox
Bill Fox is the 2014 NADA vice chairman, and a partner in Fox Dealerships, Inc., selling Chevrolet, Chrysler,
Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Ram, Subaru and Toyota brand vehicles in the upstate New York cities of Auburn and
Phoenix. Since his election to the NADA board of directors in Feb. 2006, he’s held numerous leadership positions, including chairman of the Public Affairs and Regulatory Affairs committees—where he championed
dealers’ interests through an immense number of challenges, particularly the Great Recession of 2008 when
the industry was hardest hit. This year at NADA, he is advocating on behalf of dealers in a world of changing
technology and an endless stream of government regulations. His platform is built on the security and betterment of the dealer businesses. As a member of NADA’s board of directors, he represents franchised new-car dealers in the state of
New York. He has served on the board and committee of the New York State Auto Dealers Association for more than a decade. As
an attorney, he is admitted to practice law before all New York state courts, including the Federal District Court for the Northern
District of New York, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Beck Weathers
On the night of May 10, 1996, a violent storm swept over Mt. Everest with heavy snow, subzero cold and hurricane-force winds. Within 24 hours, eight climbers, including three professional guides, were dead. Weathers,
an amateur climber, was severely injured, lying unconscious on the mountain’s icy rocks about 300 yards from
camp. His wife and family were notified of his death. Miraculously, he awoke after the storm barely alive. With
his hands and feet severely frostbitten and vision impaired, he astonished his fellow climbers by returning to
camp. Dr. Weathers, an accomplished pathologist, lost his right hand and part of his left hand to frostbite. His
story, a triumph of the human spirit, was the inspiration behind the No. 1 best-selling book, Into Thin Air, by Jon
Krakauer, which is being made into a movie, titled Everest, set for release in 2015.
Considered the “Automotive Industry Event of the Year,” the NADA convention includes dealer-manufacturer franchise meetings,
hundreds of educational workshops for dealers and their managers, several hundred exhibitors on the expo floor and numerous
networking events.
The American Truck Dealers (ATD) Convention & Expo runs concurrently with NADA convention at the Moscone Center. The NADA
expo runs Jan. 23-25.

SDADA’s Mission Statement: The level playing field,

When Vern Eide Motorcars began working with Polaris Industries on establishing an Indian dealership in western
South Dakota, Polaris’ demographic
research showed Rapid City was the
ideal location. But management at Vern
Eide pushed instead to return Indian
to Sturgis, where the brand is deeply
entrenched in the city and its annual
motorcycle rally.
“When we looked at it, we looked at the
history and the heritage that Indian Motorcycle has in Sturgis, South Dakota,
and everything points to wanting to be
in Sturgis. Sturgis, in our opinion, is
hallowed ground for Indian Motorcycle,”
said Jeff Johnson, director of dealer
development for Indian Motorcycle
Sturgis.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was
launched by Clarence “Pappy” Hoel,
who formed the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club out of his Indian franchise
in Sturgis. Now that the rally attracts
about half a million people annually,
the Vern Eide group thought 2014 would
be the perfect time to bring an Indian
dealership back to the city for the first
time in decades.

to Indian and the potential for Indian,
and then we kind of got our feet on the
ground with Indian. I think we were the
third dealership in the country that got
our showroom installed last June and
early July, and we saw the tremendous
potential that Indian Motorcycle had,”
Johnson told Powersports Business.
At the same time Johnson was in talks
with Polaris about opening another
Indian store, he was also looking
to merge his multi-line Sioux Falls
dealership with Vern Eide Motocars, a
50-plus-year-old company with eight
auto dealerships featuring 17 brands in
three states.

“It was kind of like a perfect storm
that just came together, and everything
worked out,” he explained.
Johnson has been involved with the
bid for an Indian franchise in western
South Dakota ever since his MidAmerica
MotoPlex in Sioux Falls took on the line
last summer.
Vern Eide last year took on MidAmerica
MotoPlex, renaming it Vern Eide MotoPlex. Along with Indian, the dealership
also carries Polaris, Honda, Kawasaki,
Yamaha, Victory, Triumph and Sea-Doo.

upon, Vern Eide selected 2106 Lazelle
St. in downtown Sturgis as the home for
the dealership. The facility was previously the site of Competition Distributing, a manufacturer and distributor of
parts for antique motorcycles founded
by Lonnie Isam.
“We’re located right in the heart of Lazelle Street in the middle of Sturgis, so
it kind of puts us right at rally central.
We’re right there where everything is
taking place,” Johnson said.
The 5,700-square-foot facility currently
holds about 10-11 new Indian bikes,
with space for pre-owned V-twin units
as well. The dealership, which had a
soft opening May 21, is starting out

Though Indian Motorcycle Sturgis has
completed light renovations to get the
dealership through this summer and
the Aug. 4-10 rally, a larger update is
in store next.
“We have a big remodel and expansion of the existing building planned to
start this fall, so we’ll have the brand
new Indian store open for the 75th
anniversary rally in August of 2015,”
Johnson reported.
In the meantime, Indian Motorcycle
Sturgis is working with Polaris to set
plans for this year’s rally. The two are
presenting a united Indian experience
throughout the event, with demos and
live music among some of the plans.
“Indian Motorcycle Sturgis will be intricately involved in the rally from taking
part in the rally, being the only Indian
dealer out there, as well as tied close
to the corporate marketing effort,”
Johnson said.
Year-round sales
Though rally week is expected to be a
big sales event for Indian Motorcycle
Sturgis, the dealership will be open and
fully functional throughout the year.
“The business plan that we’ve put
together and that we’ve worked with
Polaris on, it will be a fully-functioning
year-round dealership, and it’s planned
to be profitable year-round also,”
Johnson said. “Outside of the summer
rally months, we have a very strong
marketing plan in place to market …
in the western South Dakota market,
but also up in the oil fields of North
Dakota. We’re only about an hour and
a half from there, and that area is just
booming — going through the roof —
and we look for that to continue.”
Indian Motorcycle Sturgis plans a big
remodeling project to be completed by
the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in
August 2015.
The dealership looks to lean on Vern
Eide Motorcars’ five decades of experience in building its customer network
and growing its business.
“They talk about the Eide Advantage.
When you purchase a vehicle at Vern
Eide, you get service and get taken care
of, better than any other dealership.
And that doesn’t matter if you’re buying
something at the Vern Eide MotoPlex
in the powersports world, or if you’re
buying something at the Acura store
or the Honda store or the Ford store,”
Johnson said. “The way that Vern Eide
trains their people to take care of their
customers can be matched against
anyone else in the country, and we’re
just going to roll that into western
South Dakota, to the motorcycling community out there.”
And with Indian sales already doing
well at the Sioux Falls store, management is sure the brand will thrive 360
miles west.
“It is just absolutely a blast working
with the Indian customers that come
in. We’ve been a metric store for many
years, and last year we got Indian and
Victory in the same year, and it is so
much fun taking care of these customers that are coming in looking at Indian
and Victory and trading them out of
their Harley,” Johnson said. “Sales have
been through the roof so far this year.
It’s going to be a strong bike year this
year — I can just tell. And I think it’s
because of all the excitement around
Indian and Victory.”
