FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dr. Ann Poore | Email:[email protected]
It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another school year. I hope
that your student has had a positive learning experience at Austin Academy this year.
Students from our early years have contacted me to ask for an opportunity to reunite.
As a result of their enthusiasm to see each other again, Austin Academy will be
hosting an event. Please help us get the word to our former students and faculty.
Former students who attended Austin Academy during any of the years from 19872006 and all faculty members are invited to get reacquainted on Saturday, May 29,
from 2-5pm in the Austin Academy gym. We would like for former students to bring
a short biography letting us know what they are doing now. Our former students
presented this idea to us. We are happy to host this gathering. Lots of students have
participated in our program during the past 23 years. If you know of faculty or
students who might want to join us, please let them know about this invitation. We
are inviting students who have been out of high school for at least one year. Current
high school students are still in touch with each other.
I hope that your student will want to reunite with his or her middle school friends in a
few years. It will tell us that we are succeeding in providing an environment that is
challenging and supportive for all of our students. When students remember our
school fondly after being away for twenty years, we are really thrilled. Thank you for
all that you do to help us as we work with your child. We like to hear about our
successes, and we always want to know what we can improve.

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
Marie Purser | Email:[email protected]
Dear Parents and Guardians:
May 7
Association
Meetings
May 10
It is with a heavy heart that I say good-bye to Austin Academy. There are many people
who have supported me over the last two years as your PTA President. It has been my
honor and privilege to work with such dedicated and helpful parents. They all made my
job much easier. I also want to thank Dr. Poore and her staff for their willingness to
always lend a hand whenever and wherever needed.
I want to welcome Kathy Parks as your new President. Kathy comes from Arkansas but
has lived in Garland for 20 years. She has 4 children in Garland schools. I am sure her
leadership will bring further kudos to Austin Academy. The PTA has planned many
exciting things for next year. I hope all of you become involved to support not just the
Board but the students – your children. Kathy and all the 2010-2011 Board members
welcome your participation and contributions.
In closing, I want to say THANK YOU to Tama Barnes and the WONDERFUL job she has
done on our newsletter. Tama, you have given our parents easy access to all the PTA
information through our website. We truly appreciate all your time, talents and effort. To
the rest of my wonderful Board, THANK YOU for helping me these last two years. I could
not have done it without YOU.
Have a wonderful summer!!!
Sincerely,
Marie Purser
TEACHER APPRECIATION
ACTIVITIES
The May luncheon occured during Teacher
Appreciation Week May 3-7. Vetoni’s provided a
catered Italian feast.
Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance to for the
whole school to get involved in thanking our
teachers for their dedication. Each day was
sponsored by a different group.
Thank you to our wonderful teachers!
AMERICAN CANCER
SOCIETY
Austin’s students participated in basketball
games during homeroom on May 3, 4, and
5. The purpose was to benefit our teacher
Relay for Life team. We raised over $400.00
to donate to the American Cancer Society
for cancer research. Student Council led the
effort and our coaches helped organize the
games.
Way to go students!
LEGISLATIVE ACTION
TA e PTA Takes Action Challenge
Over the next few months, Congress will be drafting legislation that affects the education, health, and well-being of
children—and parents must be heard. To ensure all parents have a voice, National PTA has launched the PTA Takes
Action Challenge.
To increase PTA’s voice on Capitol Hill, we challenge all PTA members to join the PTA Takes Action Network and
respond to every action alert by reaching out to their members of Congress. The state with the highest increase in number
of PTA Takes Action Network members and response rates to action alerts between now and May 15, 2010, will be
named the National PTA Takes Action Challenge Champion and recognized at the National PTA Convention in Memphis,
Tennessee, June 10–13, 2010.
HOMEROOM PARTY
Attention Room Reps! Friday, May 7th is the last home room party of the year. Home room
times will be moved to 3:15 that day so that there will be no restrictions on what can be
served at the party (except the peanut restriction). Please contact your homeroom teachers
to let them know that you are planning the party and ask for any recommendations. Please
copy your grade level room rep coordinator to let us know that you’re working on it so that
we can be sure that all homerooms are covered. Please remember that teachers are not
allowed to collect money from the students. We recommend that you create a sign up sheet
and have students send things up the day of the party. You can create a theme such as an ice
cream sundae party or a picnic party, whatever you like. Homemade is OK.
Thank you for providing some fun for Austin students!
Your room rep coordinators,
6th grade, Linda Williamson [email protected],
7th grade, Cindy Pratt [email protected]
8th grade, Wendy Settle [email protected]
Don’t Forget Your BOX TOPS!
Help us turn Box Tops into cash for our school! Box Tops can be found on some of these brands you
may use every day: General Mills, Betty Crocker, Juicy Juice and more. See a complete list of products
(and recipes!) at boxtops4eduction.com. We’re working toward our goal of earning $450 this year.

PARENT EDUCATION
When we choose to be parents, we accept another human being as part of
ourselves, and a large part of our emotional selves will stay with that person
as long as we live. From that time on, there will be another person on this
earth whose orbit around us will affect us as surely as the moon affects the
tides, and affect us in some ways more deeply than anyone else can. Our
children are extensions of ourselves.
-- Fred Rogers
The Hebrew word for parents is horim, and it comes from the same root as
moreh, teacher. The parent is, and remains, the first and most important
teacher that the child will have.
-- Rabbi Kassel Abelson
As we move into summer, our children, young and old, will be with us 7-9
more hours per day than these last 9 months. Many of us may dread these
hours with what shall I do to fill all this time? Others may relish the
opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy the lack of the daily school run, the
panicked last-minute projects, and drama of school-time relationships.
Wherever you may be in this spectrum, remember that you are the teacher.
Our children crave role models which they can emulate and who better than
Mom or Dad? No one.
We love the teachers and staff at Austin. They have all done a fabulous job
of preparing the academic side of our kids. Now, in these beautiful, restful,
and yes, hot, summer months, we get to teach about life. Respect, honesty,
responsibility and freedom. These core values are yours to pass on.
EIGHTH GRADE DANCE
On May 1, the PTA sponsored the final dance of the year for our 8th graders at the Atrium in Garland. In
keeping with the theme, 'Rendezvous in Paris', our fantastic PTA parents recreated a scene of Paris at
night, complete with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Students enjoyed dressing up for this evening of
dancing and fun. At the end of the night, each student was able to take home a gift bag, filled with
coupons and goodies, and a special Door Prize.
We would like to thank the many individuals without whom this evening could not have been possible.
