Fall is my favorite season. The clean crisp air, tall green trees, cleansing rain and the abundance of lakes are all part of what I love about this
area at this time of year. And there is also an abundance of creative people
involved in the cultural activities that we enjoy here in Renton.
The traditional Chalk Art Contest during Renton River Days in July is
becoming more popular each year, and I was again quite impressed with
the quality and imagination of the entries. As usual, Allied Arts participated in the Renton Annual Art Show. Prizes were awarded to artists of all
ages at the Renton Community Center, where many people in the community stopped by to view the outstanding work.
This is the 50th year of the Allied Arts Organization; and to celebrate
our golden anniversary, the AAR Board is proud to have set up a mini
scholarship program in cultural arts fields to be awarded to students who
live within the Greater Renton Area, attend school in Renton and are between the ages of 12-19. The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage
and help talented young students further their training in their artistic field.
The categories under which a student may apply are all areas of visual or
performing arts. Applications are available by going to the website at
www.alliedartsofrenton.org.
We are now busy planning for the Fall Family Concert, with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra coming to the IKEA Center on October 20th at
2pm. We also participate in the Spring and Fall Arts Equinox, helping to
make them inspirational events for all artists and art lovers in our area.
We are always looking for volunteers who believe in a creative Renton
and who would like to help support and promote the arts. We would also
appreciate any donations to help us in our efforts for supplying grants to
aspiring artists, and bringing quality cultural events to our community.
Please “friend” us on our alliedartsofrenton Facebook Page, to
keep up on all of our creative activities.

Grant from Rockhill Fund Helps Repair School District Instruments
In the fall of 2012, Allied Arts Board member Shari Fisher, who manages the Rockhill Student Instrumental Music
Fund, (RSIM) was approached by Joey Roberts, Secondary Fine Arts Facilitator for Renton School District, seeking help
for the RSD music programs. After discussion and meetings with Mr. Roberts, in the spring of 2013 the Allied ArtsRSIM committee agreed to help with instrument repair. In June 2013 a $14,000 grant was awarded by RSIM (through
the Renton Community Foundation where the fund is located) to RSD to bring the school district instruments to a standard needed to be played without mechanical problems.
Shortly after the grant was awarded, plans were completed by Mr. Roberts to have the instruments repaired and replacement parts ordered. Over the summer, the grant helped repair approximately 174 instruments, purchase 31 replacement bows for RSD orchestra instruments and purchase replacement strings for orchestral instruments. This was accomplished mostly through the grant with some additional district funds.
The repaired instruments were returned before school began in September. Randy Rockhill, Ms. Fisher’s father, was
a well known music director in the Renton School District for many years. Ms. Fisher commented that she was sure her
Dad would be very, very pleased that his fund was being used to make it possible for more young people to be introduced to music in the district.
Recently Ms. Fisher’s mother, Willa Rockhill passed away and more funds are being donated to the Rockhill Fund
in her name. The fund is located with The Renton Community Foundation, a 501 c3, not-for-profit organization. You can
make a donation by going to www.rentonfoundation.org. and clicking on “donate” to get to the Rockhill Fund. Contributions can also be mailed to the Foundation at P.O. Box 820, Renton, WA 98057.
Do you have a band or orchestra instrument hiding in your closet that could be donated to the school
district? If you do, contact Shari Fisher at 425.228.4351 or [email protected] for more details.
Allied Arts Helps Fund “Art To Go” Program for Summer Lunch Program
Every summer the City of Renton works in cooperation with the Renton School District with the help of federal
funding to offer a free Summer Lunch Program open to children ages 1 to 18. In 2013, there were 17 sites that offered
free lunches. Lunch sites are supported by volunteers or staff members of non-profit organizations.
This summer an “Art to Go” program was created to provide self contained kits, that included instructions, a sample
of the project and all the materials for children to create their own version of the art project. Thanks to funding in part
from Allied Arts of Renton, the program was able to provide hands on art experiences at nine sites.
Three sites had volunteers or staff members that provided recreation activities,
and were able to expand their program and provide eight additional arts & crafts
projects to their participants thanks to
the “Arts to Go” kits. An additional six
sites that had only provided the lunch
to the children in the past were able to
participate in the “Art to Go” programs with the guidance of a United
Way Intern and City of Renton staff. A
total of 1,364 children at the nine sites
had the opportunity to participate.
Allied Arts Provides Funds for Two Art Awards at Renton Annual Art Show
The Board Members of Allied Arts of Renton were very involved with the Renton Annual Art Show this summer not only as volunteers but also as sponsors of the show. Besides providing general funding, AAR donated two
$100 awards; Marina Megale received one of the awards for her Black & White Rabbit painting entitled “Zorro”.
The second $100 award went to Tis Huberth for “Fanfare”. The awards were presented at the preview party held on
Thursday evening during Renton River Days.
Renton Annual Art Show is a non profit, juried, organization that has produced an exhibit of work by outstanding Northwest artists for 53 years. If you would like to be a part of this exemplary art show -- by volunteering or by
entering art pieces, please contact Linda Middlebrooks at (206) 919-9746, or email: [email protected].
RMAC Sub-Committees Make an Impact in The Community
Sub committees established as a result of the Master Plan developed by the Renton Municipal Arts Committee have been busy with a variety of arts projects making an impact in the community.
Resource Committee:
The Resource Committee’s prime function is to locate funding for the Master Plan projects; for example, the
4 Cow Tunnel display as well as the Galvanizing Project of lighting up Renton. The 4 Cow Tunnel display has
been
finalized and funding is being pursued through several grants that are offered both locally and nationally.
Even though some grants have been requested, others are not available yet, and none will be announced until early
or mid-2014. As a result of grants from 4Culture, the Resource Committee was able to fund the Infinity Loop, the
installation at the Renton Mine Hoist; the Fairy Tale window displays in the Renton Western Wear building; and
new audio/video equipment at IPAC. Keep posted for more information in our next newsletter or on the Renton
Municipal Arts Commission and Allied Arts websites.
Building Awareness Committee:
At this time the Committee is not meeting regularly. However, as a result of Building Awareness, the committee began the Equinox events. Please see the article in this edition of the Allied Arts Newsletter on our most
recent Equinox. For information on future events, please see the Allied Arts and Renton Municipal Arts Commission web sites.
Arts Communication Video Project:
A sub-group of the Renton Municipal Arts Commission, called the Arts Communication Team is concentrating on building awareness for the arts in Renton. One of the projects they initiated is creating a video montage by
interviewing key players in local creative pursuits. It’s early in the project, but eventually the plan is to create a
video that can be uploaded onto YouTube, and used in numerous promotional efforts. Our professional videographer, Mitch Shepherd, is now editing the interviews of the first two subjects. If you or someone you know would
be interested in participating in this project, contact Jaris English at [email protected].
Shattuck Ave Bridge Becomes Historic Site Eligible for 4Culture Funding:
Peter Hartley of the Renton Municipal Arts Commission is excited to report that 4Culture recently posted the
Shattuck Ave Bridge in Renton to their roster of historic sites eligible to receive funding towards temporary art
installations and/or performances. The deadline for proposing art projects at or about the site is coming up fast
though, on October 9th. If you or anyone you know is interested in putting together a proposal, please submit it to
4Culture using the link below.
Mr. Hartley said, “The RMAC Resources Development team would be happy to help facilitate any one’s
application. Just have them contact me at 206.819.6448 or [email protected]. We will help with any viable
proposal, but we're particularly interested in proposals that would help build awareness of and/or dovetail with the
fundraising campaign for the permanent sculpture.”
More details about the Historic Site-Specific program and the Shattuck Ave Bridge site can be found at
4Culture's website: http://www.sitespecificarts.org/site/four-cow-wide-tunnel/.
New Artists Enter 17th Annual Chalk Art Contest
The 17th Annual Chalk Art contest held on July 27th during Renton River Days filled the tennis courts at Liberty
Park with a brilliant and varied display of art work. Co-chair Vicki Navarro said, “We had many new artists this year, as
well as those that come every year, including Linda who comes to Renton from Spokane just for this event.”
The contest, which has three juried categories as well as a “free for all” event for the children, pulled in a record
number of professional artists. Sponsors were Wiener & Lambka, personal injury attorneys in Renton. James Lambka
served as a judge and assisted in giving out the awards. Mr. Lambka said, “I had lots of fun and would love to take part
again next year.”
Co-Chair Sonja Kyes is in charge of the judging. Returning judges were Vicki Faull, Carmen Unti and Bob
McCorkle; Elizabeth Stewart, Director for the Renton Historical museum joined the group for the first time and reported

Seattle Festival Orchestra to Bring Four Concerts to Renton
With the help of a grant from Allied Arts of Renton, Seattle Festival Orchestra will present four concerts in Renton this

Fall Eqinox Celebrates Music at Carco Theater
With a theme of MUSIC, the third annual Fall Arts Equinox was presented by Allied Arts and Renton
Municipal Arts Commission on September 20th at CARCO Theatre. The evening began with a Social Hour
with hors d’oeurves and wine served by Vino’s at the Landing. Emcee for the event was Allied Arts board
member Char Baker who welcomed people, introduced the acts and provided comments on each participant.
“She even added a couple of tunes herself. It was great!!” says Equinox Co-Chair Vicki Navarro.
Several Arts Organizations including Allied Arts and Renton Municipal Arts Commission talked about
their organizations and upcoming events.
Pecha Kuchas (pronounced Pa-Choc-A-Cha), a Japanese style of presentation where the presenter uses
20 PowerPoint slides and talks for 20 seconds per slide, were presented by Scott Ketron, Artist Director of
Music Works Northwest; Chris Burns a Renton Youth Symphony Alum; and Renton’s own Aunt Dottie.
Entertainment was supplied by Nicholas Fair, a jazz guitarist and singer; McKenzie Fysh, a fourteen old
who creates magic on a piano. Aunt Dottie segued her way out of her PK straight into her act and had the audience up on their feet, clapping, singing and dancing.
The CARCO staff, VJ Orduna, Aaron Brown and Patricia Carrol, was incredible, and made sure everything went smoothly. The next Equinox is tentatively planned for March 20, 2014. Please watch our website
for more information.
