BEER GARDEN BIKE TRIP
You start right in the old town with a beer in the nice
looking RADEBERGER SPEZIALAUSSCHANK restaurant
directly at the river (beer garden on the roof). Now follow
the river along the bike path. You will smell the beer and
grilled food after 10 minutes from the JOHANNSTÄDTER
BEER GARDEN. Take a beer. On hot days you should think
about taking the ferry to the shadowy Neustadt quarter
(o1,50). On the other side of the river you‘ll see the three
beautiful Elbe Castles and their vineyards. Now you reach
Germany‘s greenest residential area next to the bridge.
Here you can take a rest in the SCHILLERGARTEN restaurant where the famous writer Schiller drank beer in 1785.
Now you will see the BLAUES WUNDER Bridge. This ‚Blue
Wonder‘ is the oldest frame bridge in Europe. Germans
call somebody, who is drunk ‚blau‘ so the bridge might
get a totally different meaning for you. You can explore
the quarter on the other riverside and get back the same
way. Make sure the police don‘t stop you because there

OPERA HOUSE
Well, you know what an opera looks like. The pompous
interior of the SEMPEROPER is rich in stucco, ceiling fresco and candleholders. The building was named after the
architect Gottfried Semper, but it burned down only 30
years after it was built, to be rebuilt by Semper’s son in
1878. It got ruined again in World War II and the building
you see today was finished no earlier than 1985! You can
go for a guided tour or even better, go for a show. Tickets
should be bought well in advance and are very pricy (info
and sales in the Schinkelwache building on Theaterplatz)
but you can also go there every evening and try to negotiate with the people who have extra tickets. Tickets get
cheaper as the start of the show approaches, and you
might get lucky enough to spend a cheap, great night
between golden-framed mirrors and red carpets.

suspension bridge in Europe, the biggest
fleet of steamboats, the biggest porcelain
artwork on a wall and the oldest mountain

the Swiss), the reflex camera and ‚Leibchen‘,
the first undershirt... Isn‘t that a little bit too
much for such a small town?

to be the most political and critical part of
town. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, the
free spirit rose high, and even today Neustädter still love demonstrating. It can be
about anything, even new traffic lights (like
on the corner of Lousienstraße and Görlitzerstraße). The city council put them there,
but people think it‘s just a waste of money
on small street corners. So everybody complains and crosses the street no matter which
colour the lights show.

(Church of Our Lady). First it was bombed and totally
burnt out during the night of February 13th 1945. Then
it was left as a ruin, becoming a memorial against war
in the GDR times. After the reunification and many discussions about a reconstruction, we decided to rebuild
the church with much help from donations. Since much
of the money came from the former British enemies, it
is now a symbol of conciliation between the countries
which were at war 65 years ago. But then the stones
in the church began to sweat because of the heat of
too many visitors. We had to fit a big air conditioner in
there. And then there were the colours. The baby blues
and pastel pinks... hmm. Did the church really look like
that when it was new in August the Strong‘s days? On
the outside of the church, you see a mix of black stones
which are the old and reused ones, and the new, white,
light stones. To ascend the 67m high dome you have to
pay a lot of money, o8 / o5, so just take a short look into
the church and try to get a panorama view from another
spot: .
FAMOUS MODERN ART
(Daily from 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Mon, o8 / o6 with a
student card, audio guides are included) The moment has
finally arrived! The famous museum for art from the 19th
century to the present will open its doors in June 2010
again! The whole building was under reconstruction because of the big flood in 2002. Dresdeners still remember the tragic hours when they recovered the precious
paintings out of the cellars of most of the museums. Now
the ALBERTINUM has become an architectural ark for
Dresden‘s art treasures by integrating a sort of a lifted

platform in the foyer. Part of the museum will include

The best you can do is let the sun shine on your belly on
the meadows of the river Elbe ( ), especially when there
is a concert at the Filmnächte am Elbufer and you might
listen to it from outside the area.”
FAIRTRADE ORGANIC FOOD
(Daily from 10:00 to midnight) The ayurvedic tea is from
India, the coffee from Costa Rica, and the potato soup
from here. The AHA CAFE is cosy and the prices are reasonable (Saxon potato soup at o3,90). The meals served
are mostly vegetarian and the products used are from
certified organic cultivation. In this area, the cafe is an
independent alternative to the busy and expensive Weiße
Gasse ( ).
RESTAURANT AND CAFE AREA
The WEISSE GASSE comes up with 18 bars, cafés and
restaurants on an entire length of 200 metres. You can
choose between Italian gelato, Japanese sushi, Carribean cocktails, Spanish tapas, Dutch specialities etc. Here,
OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT STORE
(Mon to Fri from 10:00 to 20:00, Sat 9:00 to 20:00) At the
GLOBETROTTER you can get backpacks, clothing, tents
and all small tools to survive in the already comfortable camping sites and high speed trains while traveling
Europe.
STUDENTS HANG OUT
(Mon to Fri from 09:00, Sat from 12:00, Sun from 17:00
to 1:00) The BIERSTUBE, located right in the heart of the
campus, means something like ‚beer livingroom‘. Here
you can watch how some people study: starting with a
beer at 10:00 (0,5 liter for o1,90), skipping classes, having a meal under o5, skipping classes and recovering
from a hard day by playing cards.

Town of Dresden can be very surprising. I was lucky
once and caught hundreds of people flash mobbing
in the Zwinger with all of them falling over like
domino stones. You can watch it on the internet.
There have been several actions like this until today
and if you’re well-informed you might take part in
one yourself!”

PARTY ZONE
(Outside map, 25 minute walk from the Neustadt, or take
tram 7) Most tourists don‘t go this far but the industrial
area STRASSE E is the place to be on weekend nights.
The most popular clubs are the Tante Ju (liveclub), Spinnerei (gay partys and more), Kingbeatz (drum ‚n‘ bass),
Bunker (gothic) and BK8 (techno). But there are even
more hidden spots like the more alternative Sektor Evolution in the X-Park where many local bands also have
a practice room. This whole area belonged to a military
complex around 1870, which produced mostly handguns
and munitions. After World War I, Germany had to quit
this and so the area became an industry zone, only to
start up their weapons production again in World War II.
Strangely enough it wasn‘t destroyed with on February
13th 1945. During communist times, this area produced
train and airplane motors until the companies went bankrupt with the reunification of Germany. Today the listed
buildings belong to a cultural center.

castle in the middle of a lake surrounded by forests, which were once
the royal hunting grounds. Take your

so many parties in AZ CONNI, but if you went to a Goa,
hardcore or Emo night here, you won‘t forget it. People
are open and friendly, but they are not used to tourists –
so it helps if you‘re the open-minded type yourself.

13 minutes from the Train Station

2.0 presents some of the best-known DJs in town who
spin indie and rock records. Order a ‚Sputnik Special‘
from one of the good-humoured bartenders, it will make
you wanna dance till dawn in the cosy catacombs. Be
sure to bring your dancing shoes!

should move on to the small HECHT QUARTER just like
the locals do, especially to Rudolf-Leonhard Street. Here, we are a bit less nervous and a bit more laid-back.
Located close to the St. Pauli church ruin, SANKT PAULI
(daily from 10:00 to open ended) offers affordable and
extravagant dishes. Further down the street, LEONARDO
(daily from 18:00, weekends from 10:00 to 2:30) has
been this area‘s long-established speciality for 14 years
now and offers German and international dishes and a
rich breakfast buffet on the weekends (Sat o7,70, Sun
o8,20). In summertime you should not miss a visit to the
Hawaiian-style TIKI ice-bar (daily from 9:00 to 22:00)
where you can drink two sundaes or milkshakes for the
price of one between 18:00 and 21:00. On your way back
to the Neustadt, at Bischofsplatz you might enjoy another
