Will California Chrome Win the Triple Crown?
by Andy Burris, 5G
The Triple Crown races are here! This
year’s top horses are all running in the Kentucky
Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
The Derby and the Preakness have both
been won by California Chrome, a horse with four
white feet which is supposed to be a sign that the
horse will never amount to something in horse
racing tradition. However, it seems that that does
not apply to California Chrome. Though trained by
Art and Alan Sherman, father and son, California
Chrome's owners are Perry Martin and Steve
Coburn. They live in Yuma, California, and Topaz
Lake, Nevada, respectively.
California Chrome has been noted to have
unusual things that he does. For one, he has a
signature backwards walk out of his horse van, he
backs out of it. He also has a tendency to perform
a flehmen response for no noticeable reason,
especially when he is bathing, sometimes getting
the media to claim that he is "smiling" for the
camera. A real factor however, is that he has been
slow out of the gate in some races. He gets
impatient if he has to wait too long, and in some
races has made his impatience known by rocking
from side to side, making him have to straighten
himself before he gets out of the gate, giving him a
slower start.
The Belmont Stakes however, has been many a
Triple Crown contender’s downfall, as it is longer
than the other two races. Will California Chrome
end the Triple Crown drought? Or will the Belmont
Stakes end another Triple Crown contender’s
chances? We’ll have to see.
In spite of his four white feet, California
Chrome is trying to become the first
horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby,
Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed in
1978.
What Is a Flehmen Response, Anyway?
California Chrome gives a flehmen response for no apparent
reason, but what does that mean? Well, have you ever seen a horse
curl back its upper lip, bare its front teeth, inhale with its nostrils closed,
and then hold that position for several seconds? Often the horse may
do this with its neck stretched and its head held high in the air. That’s
the flehmen response! It is common in lots of mammals including
horses, tapirs, goats and cats. It helps smells to reach their nasal
passages which are located above the roof of the mouth via a duct
which exits just behind the front teeth of
the animal.

The Fastest One Minute 30 Seconds of May
by Abe Jolles, 5G
The Kentucky Derby is the fastest one minute 30 seconds of May. You better not be late or you
will miss the race. Winning the gold trophy is the glory of any jockey’s dream. The Kentucky Derby,
which is run in Louisville, Kentucky, is the “granddaddy” of American horse racing. Sometimes called
“The Run for the Roses”, the Kentucky Derby was first run in 1875. The winning horse in the very first
Kentucky Derby was Aristides and his jockey was Oliver
Lewis.
The 2014 winner was California Chrome. California
Chrome continues to dominate the sport this season after
winning the Preakness Stakes on May 17. Now, California
Chrome has a chance to win the Triple Crown, something
no horse has done since 1978. We will see in June if the
horse that has never come in second or third place—only
first place--can win the Belmont Stakes and become the
first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. That’s a long time to
wait for a Triple Crown.
Whether California Chrome does or doesn’t get the
Triple Crown, he is still going to be a very rich horse.
Last year’s Kentucky Derby winner was Orb who won an Victor Espinoza rode California Chrome
estimated 1.4 million dollars after winning the 2013
to victory in the 140th Kentucky Derby.

* Between five and six dozen baseballs are used per game. (That’s 60-70

* The home team has to have 90 new baseballs on hand for each game. That
doesn't mean they'll use them all, but they must have them, just in case.

Great NBA Playoffs Matchup:
Clippers and Thunder
by Jonah Frumkin, 4F, and Josh Solomon, 4CJ
In the second round of the playoffs, the Thunder and the Clippers play each other. They are are both very
good and competitive teams. The starting five for the Thunder are, Russell Westbrook, Jeremy Lamb, Kevin
Durant, Serge Ibaka, and Kendrick Perkins. The Clippers starting five are,
Chris Paul, J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes,
Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan.
This is one of the best matches
in the playoffs because the Thunder
are the number 2 seed and the
Clippers are the number 3 seed. The
Clippers are going through a tough
time because their owner, Donald
Sterling got banned from the NBA.
Now they are looking for a new owner.
The Thunder are lucky that they still
have their same owner and nothing is
going that bad for them. Kevin Durant
just got his MVP award so the Thunder
are on fire! On the Clippers Chris Paul

Also, in silent
protest the day
after the incident broke, the Los Angeles Clippers
themselves flipped their warmup jerseys inside out so
the name of their team didn’t show.
In spite of his recent attempts to apologize, the
ruling of the commissioner remains firm. Donald
Sterling cannot attend anything related to the NBA
including games and meetings.

MVP for KD
by Doug Cohen and Noah Weitzner, 5JB
Kevin Durant won the 2013 - 2014 MVP (Most
Valuable Player) on May 6, 2014. This season Kevin
Durant has been one of the best players. He has also been
popularized by the new KD 6’s. He made a very good
speech after his award was announced. Many people had
emotional comments about his speech. He talked a lot
about his mom and he even cried during his speech. We
think he definitely deserved this award because he is an
amazing player and he really works for his team. KD has
also broken many records. He got 25 points in 41
consecutive games, breaking one of Michael Jordan’s
records. Congrats to KD!
An Excerpt from his NBA MVP speech:
I grew up in a county outside Washington D.C. called Prince George, Md. My mom, my brother
[and I] moved to many different places. It felt like a box. It felt like there was no getting out. My
dream was to become a Rec. league coach. I love basketball so much. I love playing it. I just never
thought I'd make it to college, the NBA. Never thought I would stand in front of you guys today
and be NBA MVP. It's a surreal feeling.
“You are the real MVP!”
[Speaking directly to his mother] I don't

think you know what you did. You had my
brother when you were 18 years old. Three
years later I came out. The odds were stacked against us. Single parent with two boys by the time
you were 21 years old.
Everybody told us we weren't supposed to be
here. We moved from apartment to
apartment by ourselves. One of the best
memories I had is when we moved into our
first apartment. No bed, no furniture, and we
just sat in the living room and just hugged
each other because we thought we made it.
When something good happens to you, I don't
know about you guys, but I tend to took back
to what brought me here. You woke me up in
the middle of the night in the summer times.
Making me run up a hill. Making me do pushups. Screaming at me from the sidelines at my
games at eight or nine years old.
We weren't supposed to be here. You made us
believe. You kept us off the street, put clothes on our backs, food on the table. When you didn't eat,
you made sure we ate. You went to sleep hungry. You sacrificed for us. You're the real MVP."

Interview with San Antonio Spurs Boris Diaw
by Max Jazynka, Eli Moore, & Evan Vieth 5JL
We interviewed Boris Diaw from the San Antonio Spurs. He
comes to the NBA from France and has played on the Spurs,
Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Bobcats, and the Atlanta Hawks. This
year he has averaged 9.1 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per
game and 2.8 assists per game. He is a power forward/center
for the Spurs. The Spurs are in the second round in the 2014
playoffs. They are playing Portland Trail Blazers. He has been in
the NBA for 11 years. He is one of the X-factors for the
spurs. With his shooting touch and his great defense, he has
become very valuable for them in the 2014 season and playoffs.
Here is his interview and all the questions we have to share with
Mr. Diaw. And here is what he had to say:
Sports X-Treme: What are some of the best parts of being a professional basketball player?
Boris Diaw: The best thing is to be able to have our passion as a job, every day I am happy to go to "work"
because this is what I love.
SXT: Do you feel pressure in big games like in game 7 against the Heat in the last year’s finals? How do you
handle that?
BD: Yes, there is a lot of pressure, but thats why I play basketball, the playoffs is the best part of the season
because there is so much pressure that makes the games so exciting.
SXT: Was it always your dream to be in the NBA?
BD: When I was young I wanted to play basketball, but I would never think I could make it to the NBA. I just
wanted to be the best basketball player I could be, and little by little it took me to the NBA
SXT: What was it like for you when you first made it into the NBA?
BD: It was the best day of my life, but it was also the beginning of a new adventure. Now I want to stay in the
NBA and have a good long career with lots of good times.
SXT: How different does it feel being an international player in the NBA?
BD: It’s nice. There are more and more international players, since the NBA is the best league in the world
all the best players come to the NBA.
SXT: How much practice and training do you do every day?
BD: It depends on the teams and the coaches but with my actual team we practice about 2 hours a day,
and we also have a game about every other day.
SXT: What do you do on your off days?
BD: Usually I try to relax as much as possible, I go to watch movies and I take my dogs hiking sometimes
SXT: How does it feel to be so tall?
BD: It’s good to be tall in most situations. You always see the stage if you go to a concert. On the other hand, you
never have enough leg space in public transport. It does help to be tall for basketball even though there are short
players in the NBA, too.

NFL Draft: Winners and Losers
by Harper Dunn and Katie Kennedy, 4CJ
Many can say that this year’s draft was very interesting. We’re
breaking it down to the winners and losers. Overall there was an equal
number of both. First, the winners. One team that stood out was the
Baltimore Ravens. With their new draft of CJ Mosley, they were admired
by Bill Pollein, chairmen of the NFL Draft. The St.Louis Rams also did an
outstanding job drafting. With two first round picks, this team got all of the
coverage they needed. Two of their drafts were Erin Donald and Michael
Sam. Also, they drafted a strong running back, Tre Mason. The Pittsburgh
Steelers also did a great job. And as always, the San Francisco 49ers
were up there too. But a shocking surprise came up this year came up in
the draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars with their draft of Marqise Lee and
many other great players.
Now the losers. The dolphins were some big losers this drafts. And
getting no good players that the sources are proud of. Next, the Carolina
Panthers. They could have gotten better players than they did. Doubling
up and paying too much attention to their players contracts that could be
Marqise Lee
ending soon. Good luck Panthers, good luck. And sorry Redskins fans,
but the Redskins did pretty bad as well. Their best draft was 47th overall in
the second round. Trent Murphy from Stanford. Those were the ups and
downs of this years draft. Now the big question is, will these players turn out to be the way people
predicted? Well, we’ll just have to wait until fall to find that out.
Champion Track and Field Interview with Mr. Jackson
by Elena Houghton and Akul Pappajohn, 4F
SXT: Do you think the team could have done
better?
Mr J: Yes but I’m not one to make excuses.
SXT: What other schools were at the meet?
Mr J: All the DC public schools.
Sports X-Treme: How
do you think the girls
and boys did in the
Track and Field
championship?
Mr. Jackson
Mr Jackson: I think
they did outstanding!
Everybody competed to the best of his or her
ability.
SXT: Which events do you think Lafayette did the
best in?
Mr J: The relays. Everyone did a really good job
working together as a team.
SXT: What place did we get in the meet?
Mr.J: The boys got fourth and the girls third.
SXT: Did anybody get a school or world record?
Mr J: No.
SXT: Did you have a fun time there?
Mr J: Yes I had a great time at the track meet
SXT: Did you feel confident going into the track
meet?
Mr J: Yes.

Johnny Manziel in the NFL
by Ethan Lasser & Weston Duncan, 5G
Johnny Manziel has been the big talk going into the
NFL draft. Some reporters say that he will become a big hit or
his career will go the opposite direction. He is a very active
player and has a very good arm. Yet, one of his most famous
qualities his ability to run the ball.
He went to Tivy High School in Kerryville,Texas. In
high school he was also a QB. He was coached by Mark
Smith and Johnny played all four years including his freshman
year only playing for the freshman team. By the end of his
freshman year he ended up playing wide receiver on the
varsity team. He spent the rest of his college career on the
varsity team. In his senior season he started to play quarterback. He had 228 completions and
passed for 3,609 yards all in a single season. He also launched 45 touchdowns in the same season.
He was recruited out of high school. In addition to an offer by Texas A&M he also got an offer
from Baylor. After Johnny was accepted by Texas A&M he was excited. But in his first season he
didn’t even play one game. Next season he practiced with the team in the spring and in the fall he
became the starting quarterback. In his 2013 season the next year
he was the heisman winner. Many people were happy about it but
some people thought that it wasn’t a good choice because of
some of his actions before. He did something that is not illegal but
not a good thing to do. He sold his autograph. Many people
thought that it was really bad thing, others didn’t.
We think that Johnny will not do very well in his first season
with the Browns but once he gets bigger, tougher, stronger, and
better he will start to shoot up high in stats and rankings.
As a kid Johnny loved football and dreamed to play as a
child and now that he is going into the NFL he is fulfilling his
Johnny started playing football dream. He would play with his dad all the time. He has been

Surprising NHL Playoffs
by Eli Moore 5JL
This year’s NHL playoffs have been full of surprises. I personally thought
that the St. Louis Blues would win because they work well as a team,
and they have a good young offensive team with T.J. Oshie and Vladimir
Tarasenko who were both on their home country’s team for the 2014
olympics in Sochi, but they lost to the Blackhawks in the first round.
There are right now only two teams who everybody thought would still be
in it this long the Blackhawks and the Rangers.
The Blackhawks have advanced to the Stanley cup finals by beating the
L.A. Kings and the Rangers are still in their series with the canadiens
they play tonight at 8:00 o’clock.

Coach Bell: Flag Football Interview
by John Joire and Lee Orders, 4CJ
SXT: How were you selected to be coach?

SXT: Do you enjoy coaching the flag football team?
CB: I love coaching the team, I love football.
SXT: How many teams are in the league?
CB: 13.
SXT: Do you think Lafayette has a chance to win the championship this
season?
CB: Yes.
SXT: What are some of the drills that you work with the team on?
CB: Flag Pulling-1 on 1, Defensive Back Drills, and Wide Receiver Routes.
Coach Bell
SXT: Where do you get these drills that you use with the team?
CB: Drills I just know from experiences from football, as well as NFL Flag
Football courses I took.
SXT: Thank you for your time.
CB: I believe in hard work, discipline, and giving 100% in everything you
do.
