Please check the Orchestra Booster hotlink on the BBHHS Orchestra webpage at: www.bbhhsorchestra.com/ orchestra-boosters.html The Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools Orchestra Program began in the fall of 1964, with an idea for a comprehensive music program by Mr. Robert Kessler (band and choir director, at the time) and the support of Superintendent Maurice Jones. Ms. Patricia McKown was hired in the 1970s as the program grew and a string-specialist was increasingly necessary. Mr. Mark Kinser was added to the ranks in the 1980s during a period of growth in the district's population. Upon the retirement of Ms. McKown, Mr. Kevin Dengel (2002 Graduate of Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) was hired. Since that time, the orchestra program has seen unprecedented grown (132%), with 397 students currently enrolled in the 6-12 orchestra program. The Chamber Orchestra (HS) has collaborated with the Choral Department to present five masterworks to the community. This repertoire includes: Gabriel Faure's 'Requiem Mass' (2010), Antonio Vivaldi's 'Gloria' (2011), Franz Schubert's 'Mass in G' (2012), Giovanni Pergolesi's 'Magnificat' (2014), and Franz Joseph Haydn's 'Little Organ Mass' (2015). Ticket proceeds from these performances have raised more than $15,000 for a local, faith-based charity: Gahanna Residents in Need (GRIN). The Gahanna Orchestras understand the importance of community outreach and visibility, and consequently has partnered with the Gahanna Convention and Visitors Bureau to provide holiday music during the city's annual Holiday Lights Parade and Festival, in addition to strings quartets performing at local restaurants throughout the holiday season. Increasingly, our students are requested as wedding and special event live entertainment. With close proximity to The Ohio State University, Capital University, Otterbein University, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Early Music Columbus, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra (and many more), our students have the opportunity to collaborate, interact, and learn from great thinkers and performers in the area. Additionally, our students and directors have assisted many collegiate music education majors improve their craft prior to entering the profession. A complete concert calendar can be found at www.GahannaOrchestras.org. We welcome you to attend any of our performances; including our District Orchestra Concerts on November 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30pm. This "concert-palooza" is held at Gahanna Lincoln High School and will collectively (across its three evenings) feature all 397 students! Follow us on Twitter (@GahannaOrch), Instagram (GahannaOrchestras) and Facebook! Mr. Dengel is an active member of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA), the American Strings Teachers Association (ASTA), the National Association for Music Education (NAME), and the American Society for Composers, Arrangers and Publishers (ASCAP), and has presented professional development sessions in both Ohio and Indiana.
