Chartered in 2003, Tau Eta Zeta
Chapter is elated to be celebrating
its 5th year as a pivotal force in improving Baltimore City. Since its
chartering the chapter has grown
from 14 members to well over 50
driven and determined young
women. Some notable accomplishments are the establishment of the
Sharon K. Harvey Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc., the Tamara D.
Harris Continuing Education Scholarship, the Archonette Book Schol-
arship & the establishment of a
Stork’s Nest with the Baltimore
Health System at St. Agnes.
Tau Eta Zeta Chapter has also received many awards & certificates
on the State, Regional and National
level for their zealous work in the
name of Zeta. As the chapter continues to celebrate their 5th year of
service, they would like to thank all
that have made their success possible.

It is with humbled hearts that
members of Tau Eta Zeta Chapter remember Past Grand
Lullelia W. Harrison who passed
on Saturday, October 11, 2008.
Her life works are too numerous
to count, but she was a woman
of high standards and gave unselfishly to Zeta. Born on January 24, 1913, in Houston, Texas,
she was the daughter of a blacksmith & her mother was a
housewife. As a child she attended Crawford Elementary
School and went on to graduate
at the age of 15 from Booker T.
Washington High School. She
went on to attend Wiley College
in Marshall, Texas in the Fall of
1928 where she found Zeta. She
became a member of Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority in 1929 and has
been a long standing, hard working member ever since. She has
served in many capacities with in
the sorority, and has worked
within the national body for more
than 60 years. As the 12th National President of Zeta Phi Beta
Sorority, Inc., Past Grand Harrison initiated the Housing Project
of 1943. It was under her administration that the Amicae auxiliary
was established and the Archon
came into publication.

The works of Past Grand Harrison have touched not only the
lives of Zetas, but of all those
she has come in contact with.
She will truly be missed and we
will keep her family in our
thoughts and prayers.

Community Service: Answering the Call of Zeta
The community service committee of
Tau Eta Zeta Chapter is always on
the move looking for new ways in
which to be a greater service to the
Baltimore community. Tau Eta Zeta
Chapter has recently started a partnership with “A Way Home” group
home for girls. This facility provides
a comfortable atmosphere for young
ladies from diverse backgrounds
that are trying to improve themselves. The chapter provides mentoring on social, financial & educational topics to the ladies as well as
donates needed items.
Currently the committee is having a
drive for the ladies of “A Way Home”
to collect new undergarments. If you
would like to make a donation the
deadline is Sunday, October 19th so

The committee continues to work
with Our Daily Bread and the MD
Food bank, volunteering countless
hours to help those in need. Helping
the environment is also important to
the ladies of Tau Eta Zeta Chapter
as they participate in Adopt-AHighway. This is a perfect opportunity to all of those interested to come
out and serve the community with
the chapter. The next Adopt-AHighway is scheduled for Sunday,
October 26th at 2:30pm at Overlea

Membership hosts first activity of the
sorority year, get ready for bowling!!
The membership committee of Tau Eta Zeta
chapter is busy under the direction of their new
chair, Wanda A. Claiborne. The committee has
it’s first event scheduled for Saturday, October
25th, Bowling at Woodlawn Lanes at 5:30pm,
everyone is welcome to attend. The Tau Eta
Zeta “Alley Katz”, the chapter’s bowling team
will be joining in the fun as well.
The Fall Informational will be held Sunday,
November 2nd at 2pm at the White Marsh Library located at 8133 Sandpiper Circle, Baltimore, MD 21236. This is a perfect time to learn
more about Zeta and Tau Eta Zeta chapter as a
whole.

NPHC prepares for the 2008 Regional Conference
The Baltimore Area NPHC hosts a
variety of events throughout the
year. The annual picnic proved to be
fun for all who were came out.

Currently the National Pan-Hellenic
Council (NPHC) is busy finalizing
plans for the NPHC Eastern Regional Conference. The conference
will take place at the MarriottBurkshire Conference Hotel in Towson Maryland from November 7-9,
2008.
There will be a number of workshops and plenary sessions discussing pressing issues of today’s
changing world from the perspective
of the Greek professional.
There will be a public forum on Friday, November 7 at 7:30pm entitled
“What Now: The State of Black
America after the 2008 Election”.
This event will take place on the
Friday evening from 10pm-2am
there will be a Black Affair at the
conference center, the cost to attend

During the Congressional Black Caucus
(CBC) held in September in Washington,
DC., area chapters of the NPHC hosted a
joint reception to recognize members of
Divine 9 organizations that also serve the
CBC. The reception was attended by
over 800 people and provided a platform
for Greek networking and
collaboration.

Grand Opening of Tau Eta Zeta’s Stork’s Nest

Stork’s Nest at Baltimore

After much hard work and planning,
Tau Eta Zeta Chapter is proud to
announce the Grand Opening of
their own Stork’s Nest. The Stork’s
Nest is part of the Baltimore Medical
System at St. Agnes. The Grand
Opening is Wednesday, November
12th from 12pm-2pm at Baltimore
Medical System at St. Agnes (900
Caton Ave, 21229) and the ribbon
cutting ceremony will take place at
1pm. Please come out to celebrate
this event.

Boule’ 2008: Pearls & Diamonds in the Desert
The 2008 Boule’ was held in “Fabulous”
Las Vegas, Nevada. Sorors from all
over the country and globe converged
on Las Vegas to handle the business of
Zeta as well as have a little fun. Tau Eta
Zeta Chapter sent four delegates, Sorors Keisha Bownes, Tia Boyd, Tiffani
Cutler, & Aisha Miller.
During Boule’, elections were held for
national officers and Sheryl Underwood
was named the 23rd International Grand
Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. It
was also during this Boule’ that Z-HOPE
became an official programmatic thrust
of the sorority. Z-HOPE stands for
“Zetas Helping Other People Excel”.
Through Z-HOPE projects, chapters are
able to help the communities in which
they live and the global community as a

Leadership Retreat: Business & Sisterly Bonding
During the month of August, Tau Eta Zeta had its’ yearly Leadership Retreat. The goal was to educate members on parliamentary procedures and
handling chapter business on different levels. At the event the official logo
for the chapter’s 5th anniversary was unveiled. Designed by none other than
Tau Eta Zeta’s own Soror Christina Debnam, the logo has been made into a
lovely lapel pin worn by chapter members and other sorors alike.
Soror Teraleen Campbell taught a segment on committee member involvement and committee chair responsibility. The chapter Basileus, Lisa M. Hudley also gave a dynamic presentation on the State of the Chapter. Tau Eta
Zeta chapter is continuing to flourish and blaze new trails in the Baltimore

Youth on the Move
The Pearlettes, Amicettes & Archonettes kicked off the new Sorority
Year with a Welcome Back Picnic on
Saturday Sept 6th. Amicette Advisor,
Soror Collazo-Dingle planned a wonderful outdoor pool party for the Amicettes
& Pearlettes but due to the Hurricane
the Luau had to be moved indoors. The
inclement weather did not stop the fun
as good times were had during the
limbo contest & pass the coconut contest. The Archonettes bonded over food
& good conversation hosted at Archonette Advisor, Soror Tamara Harris'
home.
Soror Vonda Holman-Carter conducted
an exciting and interactive ice breaker
which led to various dramatic performances by the group. Archonette Morgan
Murray was voted the best dramatic
performance. The days events concluded with Soror Tamara Harris sharing
information about the Archonette club
and the expectations for the upcoming
year with the future Archonettes and
parents.

On Saturday, September 27, 2009,
the Archonette Club was afforded
the opportunity to witness an auspicious performance by the GIA Group
for the Dr. Nathan Carter Foundation
Annual Benefit Concert. The performance was conducted as part of
a 5-year plan to raise $100,000 for
Music major scholarships.

other as well as writers, publicist and
other persons representing various authors. They were given an opportunity
to meet Bernadette Stanis, known as
Thelma from the sitcom “Good Times”.

rain storm; however, before leaving they
were briefly able to enjoy a cooking

The Fall Informational held on Sept 21st

fun bonding activity where the nursery
rhyme "Old McDonald Had a Farm" in
different genres of music. The Country &
Gospel genres seemed to be a big hit.
On Sunday October 19, 2008 the Youth
Auxiliary will host a Baby Shower for the
THZ Stork's Nest located at St. Agnes
Hospital. In addition, Fall Induction will
be held on October 19, 2008. We are
looking to induct a record amount of
new members.
The Amicettes & Archonettes look forward to a public speaking workshop
given by Soror Gigi Barnett of WJZ TV in
November. While the Pearlettes are gearing up to attend a December performance of the Nutcracker. As you can see
the THZ Youth Auxiliary has started the
year with zeal. Please support the girls as
they blaze a trial of positivity, growth &
community outreach.
The Amicettes would like to thank the
Sorors who have supported & donated to
their ongoing Loose Change drive. In
addition, the Amicettes are also doing a
PHONERAISER - please donate old
unused phones and inkjet cartridges. The
phones will be shipped off to be recycled
and the Amicettes will earn money.

Socializing with our Sisters
Though Tau Eta Zeta is a very close chapter, they always find
time to support other Zeta chapters as we are all working toward a common goal.
Gamma Zeta and Tau Delta Zeta Chapters. The evening culminated with dancing to a phenomenal live band and reminiscing
with sorors from other chapters throughout the State of Maryland. It was truly an evening to remember!
The Sorors of Tau Eta Zeta Chapter continues demonstrating
Sisterhood by supporting Alpha Zeta Chapter as they celebrated their 85th Chapter Anniversary on Saturday, September
20, 2008. Sorors Lisa Hudley (President), Tamara Harris,
Cheryl Harrison-Murray, Vonda Holman-Carter, Yolanda Jackson, Theresa Lewis and Brenda McKinley looked beautiful in
their after five attire representing the epitome of Finer Womanhood. Sorors Kim Sawyer and Jackie McNair were recognized
as the Past First National Vice President and Maryland State
Director, respectively. Soror Brenda McKinley was recognized
as a Past President of Alpha Zeta Chapter with a roaring cheer
from her fellow chapter members. In the true light of Sisterhood, Tau Eta Zeta shared a table, enjoyed a delicious meal
and had a wonderful fellowship with Delta Zeta Zeta, Lambda

October’s Zeta Spotlight has landed on Soror Keisha La’Trice
Bownes.
Soror Bownes is a native Baltimorean & Towson
Alumni. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Anthropology
& Criminal Justice & works at Towson University in the counseling
center.
Though Soror Bownes is a quiet behind the scene person, she
enjoys serving the community and working with youth. Her desired to become a Zeta was due to the positive interactions with
members of Tau Eta Zeta Chapter. She was initiated into Tau Eta
Zeta Chapter in Spring of 2007.
Her future plans include working in higher education and having
some of her poetic works published.
