Builders Club Sponsor Highlight
Randy Diers, President
Village Bank was founded in 1993 by Don
Kveton and Jim Smith. Don’s overriding
goal in wanting to charter a community bank
was his strong desire to help people with
their financial needs. Village Bank is a fullservice community bank. We offer all types
of business and consumer loans including land
development, construction lending, equipment
financing, real estate financing, lines of
credit and vehicle financing. Our deposit
products are state of the art and include full
deposit services including cash management,
electronic and mobile banking and good old
fashioned direct deposit services with a smile!
Randy Diers, president at Village Bank, states
that the best part of his job is "I especially embrace running a strong community
bank by working with and empowering our most valuable asset – our great
team of people to help meet the needs of our growing customer base. I enjoy
creating, executing and achieving our annual strategic plans. Central to our
strategic plan is delivering great customer service, offering competitive products
and the continued development of our fine staff."
Randy Diers said, "we know life can throw real challenges at us from time to
time. Similar to many of our customers, we were hit hard during the recent
recession. We established and maintained strong communication and with many
of our builders who saw their businesses greatly impacted. We brainstormed
with them to find solutions and options for them to survive and also to position
themselves to thrive down the road. Strong relationships were formed during
those tough times as we worked through various ideas and options that would
work for everyone. I personally have never been part of a community bank that
did more to ensure everyone’s mutual success."
Village. Value. Vision.

• Include natural gas heating and water heating equipment
• Achieve natural gas energy savings of 20% or more above code requirements
Rebate levels for qualifying homes:
• 20% natural gas energy savings: $250 rebate
• 30% natural gas energy savings: $500 rebate
- Plus $50 for each 1% in savings above 30%

FLY-FISHING-REEL BUYER’S GUIDE
AUTHOR: DAVID MEAD
Size
The reel size you choose should be decided largely by what line it needs to hold.
An 8-wt. fly line takes up more room than a 4-wt., so you will need a larger reel to
accommodate it.
Drag
Synthetics (Rulon®, Delrin®, Teflon®) – Heralded because they can last a lifetime.
Also, they are self lubricated, meaning there is no need to lubricate them yourself (in
fact, you shouldn’t), and it’s possible to seal them so they resist the harmful effects
of silt and saltwater.
Carbon Fiber, Graphite – Very similar to other synthetics, the added benefit of
carbon fiber is that it dissipates heat quickly. The chances of it overheating, and
thus causing your reel to lose all drag, are close to zero.
Cork – Newton’s first law of motion teaches that objects at rest like to stay at rest,
while objects that are moving like to stay moving. This means that the first moments
of a fight have the greatest chance of breaking your tippet. However, because cork
compresses, the force it takes to get the drag going is lessened, protecting your
tippet from hard-running fish. As the fish runs, the cork expands, and pressure is
quickly ramped up to fish-stopping levels. It is important to manually lubricate cork
drags, so sealed cork drags are not an option. If not maintained, cork will dry out
and rot. Also, if it is constantly compressed – if you crank down the drag and just
leave it – the cork will eventually lose its memory. Because cork drags do not use a
spring to create pressure – spring is innate in cork – loss of memory results in a reel
with no drag.

Large-Arbor, Mid-Arbor and Small-Arbor Reels
Possibly the most significant advancement in fly-fishing technology since graphite
fly rods is the introduction of large-arbor fly reels. There are several benefits to
having a larger arbor.
Faster Line Retrieval – A large arbor retrieves more line with every crank. This is
especially helpful for picking up slack line at the beginning of a fight and keeping
consistent tension on the line, even if the fish swims at you.
Less Line Coil – The fly line is wound on the spool in looser, more open coils. These
more open coils create less line memory, letting you lay the line out straighter on
the water. Larger coils also lead to longer line life, as the line endures less stress
over time.

Phone: 612.359.1133
More-consistent Drag – Because the spool diameter remains almost the same
as a fish pulls out more and more line, the force it takes to pull line out remains
consistent. This means there is little need to adjust drag while fighting fish, making
you less likely to break off fine tippets and more likely to control the fish.
While large-arbor reels have many useful advantages, small-arbor reels are also
useful in certain situations. They are smaller, and smaller means lighter. Small-arbor
reels balance better with smaller rods.
Manufacturing Process
Machined – Machining produces the most-durable reels available. If you are going
to be fishing areas with a lot of boulders and rough terrain, machined reels are an
excellent choice, as they can handle more abuse than die-cast reels. Machined reels
are also more corrosion-resistant because they can be anodized, making them good
for saltwater, glacial silt and other harsh environments.
Die Cast – Manufacturing advances have made die-cast reels lighter and stronger in
recent years. If you are looking for an economical fly reel that performs well, die cast
is a good option. They can’t be anodized, however, and are susceptible to corrosion.

The featured town this month is
Cochem, Germany
It’s day ‘ 5 ‘ of our journey up the river but our river has changed for a few
hours. This is your opportunity to enjoy the Rhine’s peaceful beautiful little
sister ~ The Mosel River as we wind our way through Germany’s dreamy Mosel
Valley featuring quaint, cobbled towns and storybook castles. The Mosel is
located near Germany’s western border and is one of the longest tributaries to
the Rhine. The main tourist town of Cochem is tucked between steep vineyards
and the river and boasts picturesque medieval streets. You’ll have a chance to
stroll the delightful riverfront promenade, play life-size chess or just grab a
bench and watch Germany at play.
There are few towns in Germany that can match the charm of Cochem. It’s
picturesque beauty makes Cochem itself, a showpiece gem and truly, it’s rated
as one of the prettiest villages along the Mosel. You will feel that very little
has changed for centuries as you experience this magical town of beautiful
buildings, quaint cottages, black and tan guild houses and winding streets.
It’s a true German town with its half - timbered houses and it’s scenic location.
Wine tasting is a popular activity here as it is the center of the Mosel wine
trade. Cochem is known for its regional wines due to the presence of the many
vineyards and small family run wineries in nearby towns. Perhaps you’ll have
an opportunity to sample some of their unique wines.
are sponsoring the
"Cochem Cocktail Party"
You will enjoy your afternoon in Cochem but you must leave time to
sample some German Pretzels, Fantastic Sausages and of course their
Wines and German Beer before heading back to the ship. Our Sponsors
Scherer Bros Lumber and Warners` Stellian Appliances are at it again and
have found this unique spot for a ‘Farewell to Cochem’. It will be easy
to find, as it is located next to the river and under the bridge, that you will
have to walk across to get back to our River Boat. So before you start your
walk back, stop in, say hello, and enjoy a cold glass of beer on them.

Tips from the trade
What’s Trending in Kitchen Design?
CABINETRY
Holds the Key to Fresh Styling
Kitchens are the central gathering spaces for
today’s modern families. The kitchen is often host
to multi-generations, food prep, homework, dining,
bill pay and entertaining, all while attempting to
create a calm and tranquil recharging zone in the
home. Thoughtful cabinet selection can enhance
movement and functionality in this often crowded
living space.
Here’s what ProSource Wholesale Kitchen &
Bath showrooms see trending amongst today’s
discerning homeowners:
OPEN SPACES
Walls are coming down to open
space and allow for generous
prep zones, efficient well-lit
work stations and comfortable
socializing all in one abundant
area. Universal design strategies
put all kitchen components
within reach and create a stunning
visual impact.
BRIGHT, LIGHT & CLEAN
Simple, clean, elegant lines define what’s trending in
today’s cabinet door styles. Homeowners tend toward
the updated classic styling of transitional design,
while mid-century modern is making a big comeback.
UNIQUE FINISHES
Furniture-like qualities continue to gain in popularity.
Built-in appliances, intricately styled details,
personalized color palettes, unique finishes and
decorative knobs and pulls each add to the appeal of
one-of-a-kind kitchen design.
SPACE CRAVERS
Innovative storage solutions and high-tech rendering
software allow professional Kitchen & Bath designers
to leverage every inch of space to maximize storage,
organization, functionality and ease of use.
