It all started 40 years ago
when Edmonton machine
shop entrepreneur and inventor Ron Bodnar acquired a tin
Lincoln toy fire truck that
caught his eye.
The Bodnar family private
collection of things from the
late 1800s through the mid1900s now fills about twothirds of a 26,000 square-foot
museum in the Argyll Road
district of southeast Edmonton. And it’s still growing.

vehicle. Since 1979 that sedan has been the Commodore.
The Commodore has always been built in a right hand drive configuration and been sold in Australia, New Zealand, and
South Africa. It has also been re-badged and sold in India as a Chevrolet Impala and in China as a Chevrolet Caprice and
the United Kingdom as a Vauxhall. More recently the car has also been marketed in the Arab Emirates.
General Motors needed a four door rear wheel drive car to sell into the very lucrative North American police cruiser market and they didn’t have one. So in late 2008 General Motors began importing the re-badged Commodore to America to
sell as the Pontiac G8. This required the vehicle to re-configured to a left hand driving position. The first and only time
that has occurred. Three models were offered, the G8, the GT, and the GXP.
The Holden Commodore has always been a 4-door sedan with a V8 motor and rear wheel drive. In more recent years
Holden has introduced a V6 engine to attempt to improve fuel mileage and driveability. Australian cars have always been
built as V8 rear wheel drive cars. In fact there is a racing series in Australia and New Zealand called V8 Super Car for only
two cars models, the Holden Commodore and the Ford Falcon. The series consists of 28 races annually and draws an
average of 70,000 spectators per race. The cars are run on alcohol and deliver 690HP and run to 190 MPH making
them at least the equal of Nascar in America. The Ford-Holden rivalry has always been fierce.
Australian cars have always been more European in nature, all about speed and road handling. Much more so than
American cars whose focus has mainly been straight line horsepower and speed or luxury.
Holden decided the best way to proceed with an American high HP version was to obtain a number of the LS-3 V8 6.2L
motor and transmission set-ups used in the American Corvette and install them in the Holden as a limited production
model, the Holden VE Commodore SS V-series. That car came to America as the G8 GXP car. It was meant to compete
with high-powered European style sports sedans such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes at about half the price. The GXP car
was tested and found to have a 0-60MPH time of 4.6 seconds and a quarter mile time of 12.7 seconds with a top speed
of 109.6 MPH. Not bad for a four door grocery getter.
In early 2009 the GXP car was brought to America in limited numbers. From a U Tube Pontiac Promo a total of 1829
GXP’s (awaiting confirmation Pontiac.Ca) came to America out of a total of 38,159 G8’s produced in total for America and
Canada between 4 July 2007 and 18 December 2009. The other models offered were the standard G8 with V6 256HP
and the G8 GT with the 6.0L V8 361HP. Only the G8 and G8-GT were brought to Canada in late 2008 and early 2009.
Pontiac intended to introduce the G8 GXP and the Pontiac Ute (think El Camino) to be called the G8 ST (Sports Truck) and
possibly an Estate (think station wagon) and if market sales would support it a G8 Coupe after midyear 2009. That never
happened as General Motors decided to cut the entire Pontiac line in March of 2009. If you come across a GXP car in
Canada it was imported from America. The pictures of the G8 ST and the G8 Coupe I saw on the net were amazing. From
the photos they must have made a couple of each as concept cars. We can ply “If only” for as long as we want but that
isn’t going to make it happen. I wonder what they did with the concept cars. The usual practise is to crush them after the
project dies to keep them out of the publics hands. Go figure.
You will remember that two things occurred in early 2009. First the markets tumbled and secondly the world went into
recession. As a result General Motors along with other motor companies in America came perilously close to bankruptcy.
So close in fact that they had to be bailed out by the American Government. At the time our local General Motors dealerships were very concerned as to what their outlook might be especially since General Motors had announced the intention to eliminate at least 100 dealerships Canada wide. This resulted in local dealerships not being able to access new
product to sell. You might also remember that their lots were nearly empty for a number of months.
In order to obtain product to sell they determined to go south and buy whatever they could. Several truckloads of vehicles
were brought into Canada in September and October 2009. These consisted of mostly lease returns and low milers one
to two years old. (Still attempting to confirm where they bought the cars) In those loads they received two GXP cars. The
black one was placed at Ulmer Chevrolet and the Teal green placed on Westridge’s lot. Cont. Pg7
Lloydminster is a small market for exotic or rare cars sales. The two GXP cars arrived in October of 2009 and hung
around until the spring of 2010 as nobody here really knew what they were. Since they look very much like any other
front wheel drive commuter car it’s a hard sell to get about twice the price out of them. After 6-8 months of good sales
effort the teal green one was sent off to Calgary to a larger market and the other remained behind. That’s the car I

bought. Under the Ulmer sticker I found the remains of a dealer sticker reading Peruzzi, Langhorne, Pa. Also on the
driver side door post is a dealer sticker for a towing firm from Fairless Hills, Pa.
A search of the Internet at the time I bought the car in May 2010 revealed only 4 GXP cars available for sale in Canada
of which I had driven two of them. On 14 May 2010 an exhaustive search of the Internet found only eight of the GXP’s
for sale in all North America. Of those eight, only the two I drove were manual shift cars, all the others were automatic.
As it stands today I would be surprised if more than a dozen of the GXP cars ever got to Canada.
So it’s up to you to decide if this car is an instant classic or just a rare collector car oddity, meantime I am going to drive
it and have a lot of fun. Sometime in the distant future I hope to determine if I made a wise deal or not.

Update: March 2013
Further research on the Internet has turned up a number of interesting bits and pieces. There are a lot more articles to
read than I am prepared to take the time to go though but here are some highlights.
On the Australian auto show Top Gear, which you can find on You Tube, they traveled to America and drove around talking to people about the G8 in fact being a Holden Commodore. The interviews are quite funny as you well know most
Americans would be hard pressed to pick out Australia on a map never mind have any clue that automobiles are made
there. In the piece they state the HP to be 415. I point this out because the figure varies depending on the source.
I found another You Tube promo comparing the GXP to the current Corvette based on the fact they shared the same
drive train. In that piece it was stated that a total of 1826 GXP cars were imported to America. As they were going
through the interior comparison they mentioned the door locks flip the opposite way to the American car. A small thing,
but also correct.
Auto Blog. Com had an article from November 2009 that talked about the Australian “Pontiac G8” being given an extended run. The plan is that for a premium of $1000AUS($923CN) the Pontiac G8 front facia and trimmings will be offered on the Holden VE Commodore SS V-series as a Special addition while parts last. The sheet metal swap was also
offered on the Ute and the Estate as well. The Special Edition was unveiled in August 209 at the Deni Ute Muster (the
largest Ute muster in Australia). It turned out to be so popular that in November 2009 Holden decided to continue the
series “indefinitely”. Many dealers are ordering G8 and GXP badges to add to the cars to further complete the whole
Pontiac theme.
I have found, printed, and attached several other blogs and articles about the GXP , most are from American sources.
The HP numbers move around a bit depending on whom you wish to quote. The Canadian dealer promo brochure,
which was printed prior to the cars release in Canada states the HP will be 411. On the net all the articles from early
2008 and up until the car was released all state 402HP and 402FtLbs torque. The most quoted number is 415 with
415 ftlbs torque. I have also seen quotes as high as 433. The same engine trans set up in the 2010 Camaro (virtually
same platform) is listed at 426. The 09 Corvette was listed in one article at 413 with the same engine trans set up. So
who knows for sure what the right number is. I am going to go with 415 as it is the most often quoted from several different sources as being correct.
Further to the above I came across another article that puts all this HP business straight. Before the car was released
no precise HP rating was given. Apparently this is done regularly for a purpose. The 411 in the brochure was stated as
an estimate and intentionally a little low. It is likewise with the pre-release number 402. That way once the car is released and someone takes the time to dyno the car, as one or another of the car mags will do everytime, it looks optically better for GM if the dyno number is higher than the estimated number. If it was the other way around guess how
much fun the auto reviewers would have. Once the dyno number is published then GM will revise their data and use the
correct number, which in this case is 415HP. In the same article they also explained why the 2010 Camaro is rated at

Dear Editor: I' m hoping to tap into
the collective wisdom of AIIPC Edm.
Chpt. members with a problem that has
come up regarding a wire-spoked wheel
rim for my collector car.
I'd put up with a slow leak in my tubeless tire -- or so I thought -- for some
time and finally decided to get it fixed
for good rather than topping up my tire
pressure every time I'd go out for a
cruise. I took the wheel off and hauled
it to a tire repair shop. But when I returned to pick it up the next day, I was
shocked when they told me they couldn't fix it! It wasn't a leaking tire; it was
a tiny pinprick leak through one of the
wire spoke junctures into the rim, each
of which is daubbed over with some
kind of hard epoxy-like material.
Does anybody know of a fix for the
fix I'm in?

Editor's Reply: You know, Zane, I
might be able to help you here, but I'd
also like to hear some other good ideas from our readers.
I found myself in a similar fix recently and, rather than strain my brain
for a solution I took my leaking wirespoked rim to a talented hot-rodder
body shop man whose creative skills
had gotten me out of a number of fixes before. Although James (at his
IROC Custom Auto shop) had never
encountered the problem before he
said he'd "give it a shot.
Using a grinder, James cleaned up
around the old juncture glue and regooed it with gasket maker, which
hardened exactly as had the original
stuff. I took the rim and tire back to
the tire shop and soon it was good to
go. . . . uh, not yet, alas. There was
still a slow leak from somewhere. Not
a big deal, however, or so I thought.
I'd simply put an inner tube in it.
Not so fast, said the tire man. The
rough gasket goo stuff would rub
holes in the tube.

426HP. Apparently it has a substantially different exhaust system and a minor tuning change otherwise the motor is the
same. The article went on to speculate that with minor upgrades in exhaust and cold air intake and some tuning they
suggest the HP of the GXP could easily be brought up into the 450 range.
Autoline Daily did a review of the GXP car in March 2009 and made some pretty loud statements after explaining the
whole Australian built, European sedan car handling HP thing, to the effect that in their opinion the G8 and specifically the
GXP was the best handling American Sports Sedan bar none. He also said that the GXP car is the highest HP car offered
by Pontiac for sale in stock configuration EVER.
In the Wikipedia article attached it is stated that at the end of 2008 there were 11,000 unsold units left in the inventory
and 13,000 units sold for a total of 24,000 units. By July 2009 there were only 5000 unsold G8’s in inventory with almost 30,700 sold.
Bob Lutz, then American GM chairman made the off hand comment at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show that the G8 should be
revived as the Chevrolet Caprice. Makes sense, after all the Holden is sold as a Chevrolet currently in many other places
in the world.
And finally, this from AutoBlog showing a Pontiac G8 GXP spotted in California wearing Holden HSV front facia, spoiler,
wheels and other trimmings. Had to happen I suppose.
One 8 January 2010 the last brand new GXP car for sale, a white one, was located at Pearson Buick Pontiac in Sunnyvale,
CA for a sticker price of $46,585. I suspect he sold it for more than that if he figured out it was the last one. White isn’t
really my colour anyway.
A recent internet article says that a G8 ST was shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. In photos taken at a Pontiac Owners
Show in Seattle during the summer of 2012 by members of Alberta Iron Indian Pontiac Club members there is a photo of
a Ute purported to be a G8 ST. There not quite enough photos to see clearly but the vehicle is definitely wearing a Pontiac
front valance and grill and appears to have left hand steering. If it is exactly what it’s purported to be its pretty much got
to be the only one in existence.
Also in another internet article it is suggested that six GZP’s were released in Canada. So far I have not been able to establish this as fact.
The Pontiac G8 was the only rear wheel drive that GM had in America for the police cruiser market. I wondered at the time
that it didn’t make sense for them to stay out of that market for long. In February 2013, GM showcased the Nascar SS
pace car at the Daytona 500 race. The 4 door car is badged Chevrolet and is, guess what, built in Melbourne, Australia
equipped with the LS-3 6.2L V8 and rear wheel drive. Initially the car will only be available to the commercial police market and at present there are no plans to release the car in Canada. No surprise there.
I think this proves once and for all that this Australian car is every bit as good a vehicle as it is purported to be no matter
whether right hand, left hand drive or whatever badge Holden, Vauxhall, Chevrolet, or Pontiac it wears. The car has been
around since 1979 and will be with us in some form or another for many, many, years to come.

World Of Wheels 2013

Richard & I left Viking with our
car show in Calgary February 22-24,
1966 Acadian Station Wagon load- 2013. We were really excited. We had
ed up in a trailer and headed to participate with the Alberta Iron Indians
Pontiac Club at the World of Wheels
been asked to take our Pontiac to be
one of the six AIIPC in entries. The
other north entry was Lance Briggs,

and for the south, their entries were
Ken Brandick, Stewart Smith, Pat
Ronak and Rick Field.
The move in and set up day went
really smooth. The south members

Welcome all! After a very
long snowy winter we are all glad to
put the shovels away and start up our
cruising cars.
Our Christmas party was a
great success thanks to Sylvia and
staff at the ABC Country Restaurant.
We had two cruises this year
so far. I would like to thank Mr. and
Mrs. Bodnar for their hospitality on
offering us a chance to tour their
awesome collection of cars and
memorabilia and Shawn Genge for
providing us with a scrumptideliscious barbeque after the
tour.
Special thanks to Clifford
Riles for arranging a tour of the Canadian Forces Base Edmonton and
to Dean DiCesare for being an excellent tour guide for the Leopard
Tank area.
The club has grown in membership
considerably thanks to the dedication, support and attitude of many
of our members.
In May I was voted in as a
Director for the Specialty Vehicle
Association of Alberta (SVAA) The
SVAA is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of
all antique, collector, vintage and
specialty vehicles. The association

13TH ANNUAL SHOW'N SHINE
Date: Sunday, June 02, 2013 - Sunday, June 02, 2013
Chipman Car Crafters 12th Anniversary Show and Shine
The Chipman Car Crafters will be celebrating twelve years in existence by
hosting a special show and shine on June 3rd, 2011. Once again, the seniors will provide a breakfast; the volunteer fire department will provide a
concession. Entertainment will take place and several vendors will be on
site. The Chipman Glider Club will have their glider on display again. The
Village of Chipman now offers all paved streets for participant parking.
This show is open to all classes of vehicles but unfortunately the antique
tractor class had to be discontinued.
Registration starts at 9:00a.m.
Show & Shine 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Trophy presentation 4:00 p.m.
Seniors Breakfast 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Fire Dept. concession 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Ukrainian plate (National Hall) 12:00 to 4:00

SHOW AND SHINE EVENTS THE ALBERTA IRON INDIAN PONTIAC CLUB
EDMONTON CHAPTER WILL BE ATTENDING IN JUNE 2013
Crystal Kids Show and Shine at Sherbrooke Community League on 13008 – 122B Ave – June
1, 2013 we will meet at Tim Horton’s at Westmount Mall and will depart at 8:30 A.M.
Chipman’s Show and Shine in Chipman – June 2, 2013 we will meet at Tim Horton’s by Wal
Mart at the north end of St. Albert Trail in St Albert. We will depart at 7:00 A.M.
Reynolds Show and Shine in Wetaskiwin – June 8, 2013 we will meet at Tim Hor ton’s in
Leduc, follow QE 2 south to exit 522 and its on Sparrow Crest, we will depart at 8:30 A.M.

Alberta Iron Indian’s Pontiac Show and Shine in Calgary – June 16, 2013, would love to see
lots of members for this event, some members are going down on the Friday or Saturday and
staying with friends, families or a hotel. Location is at the Douglas Square Mall,24th St and 114
Ave SE.
Pacemaker Motorsports Classic and Performance Auto Show – June 23, 2013, at Ron Hodgson
Chevrolet, Buick, GMC at 5 Galarneau Place St Albert. Anyone who has volunteered for this
event we need to have you there by 8:00 A.M to set up for the event.
The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village Show and Shine – June 30, 2013 we will meet at the
Tim Horton’s off Broadmoor Blvd and Pembina Rd, follow Yellowhead East and take exit for
Broadmoor Blvd for Sherwood Park. We will depart at 8:30 A.M.

The Volunteers for our Pacemaker S & S will be meeting at ABC Country Restaurant on Wednesday June 5 to get acquainted with the Ron Hodgson”s location for the Show and Shine. (Parking, setup for tents etc.) We will be departing ABC at
7:00PM, meeting at Ron Hodgson Chev Buick GMC at 5 Galarneau Place, St Albert before 7:30 PM.

all knew what to do and worked hard to
develop the “Cantina.’ On opening day
and every day after, all participants
wore bright golden-rod coloured shirts,
black aprons, and hats to look like a
team! Everyone was responsive to
the visiting enthusiast to share their
car details and amazing stories that
go with their ‘pride and joy.’ The
World of Wheels certainly held up to
is WOW factor. We are happy to re-
port our Acadian station wagon won
Outstanding in Class for 59-66. . It
was an amazing weekend of fun,
friendship and education on Pontiacs.

last Monday of every month at ABC Restaurant
127 st and 140 ave from 6:00 pm for supper,
meeting starts at 7:00pm to 9:00 pm. All food
costs are members responsibility.
AIIPC Edmonton Chapter Cruises every
Wednesday evening, through the summer,
weather permitting, 6:00pm at ABC Country
Restaurant , then leaving at 7:00pm for a
cruise around town. ABC offers 15% off of
food and drinks on Wednesday evenings for
club members.
