Expertise.
When your heart’s on the line,
choose nationally accredited care.
The moment you feel chest pain or shortness of breath that could be a heart
attack, go to Woodland Heights Medical Center. We are Lufkin’s only hospital to
be accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, the national chest pain center
accreditation agency. That’s important because accredited chest pain centers
have demonstrated expertise in the timely diagnosis and treatment of cardiac
emergencies.* So in an emergency, call 911 and know where to go. Choose a
nationally accredited Chest Pain Center. Choose Woodland Heights.
Take our online heart risk assessment to learn your risk of heart attack and how you
can reduce it. Visit WoodlandHeights.net/heart.
*According to the Society of Chest Pain Centers, www.scpcp.org.
Woodland Heights Medical Center is directly or indirectly owned by a partnership that proudly includes physician owners, including certain members of the hospital’s medical staff.

2013 / Lufkin/Angelina County
Business & Industry
If you’re looking for a community that offers the
kind of living and working environment all businesses
thrive on, set your destination on Lufkin/Angelina
County. Take a look at some of the companies that
do business here and you’ll see Angelina County is
recognized for all the community has to offer — a
reasonable cost of living, easy access to world markets
and a highly qualified and educated workforce.
As the birthplace of Lufkin Industries, Temple-Inland,
Brookshire Brothers Grocery and Atkinson Candy,
Lufkin and Angelina County have a long history of
taking companies from infancy and helping them
grow to prominent leaders in their industry. Today,
companies that started relatively small in our area
have become the anchors of the economy and are
8
continuing to grow and prosper. Lufkin is the largest
community between Houston and Tyler and serves a
broad service area for jobs, education, entertainment
and retail shopping. These combined services create
a daytime population estimated at more than 100,000
and a service sector to support this size community.
Adding to an outstanding community, Lufkin and
Angelina County have an abundance of natural
resources that includes pine trees, hardwoods, natural
gas, oil and water. According to the Texas Water
Development Board, “Water rights are the most sought
after commodity in our country today - especially in
Texas where the population is expected to double by
2060. “The City of Lufkin owns water rights to more
than 63,000 acre feet of surface water and is able to

In order to help businesses get established in the area,
the Lufkin/Angelina County Economic Development
Team stands ready to assist companies with retention
and expansion needs. Lufkin and Angelina County
have a committed team of Leaders, from the 4B
Partnership, to the Chamber, and other stakeholder
groups that all work together to help local companies
continue to grow their assets and employ the
quality workforce that’s proven here in the Heart
of East Texas!
provide both treated and untreated water for business
and industry to meet their needs.
Industrial businesses looking to move to the area may
be interested in the Lufkin Industrial Rail Park. This
area has 156 Acres of prime industrial land located
at the convergence of Hwy 103 East and Loop 287 in
Lufkin and within 1 mile of Hwy 59 and 2 miles of
Hwy 69. The site has Heavy Rail access and oversized
infrastructure to the site. There is currently 40 acres
left on this site.
These key community leaders passed a comprehensive
incentive program in conjunction with State and
Federal agencies to provide a positive business
environment for new and expanding businesses in
an effort to encourage positive investment and job
creation. Recognizing that current companies are
already stable tax payers and established employers,
local incentive policies are favorable for current
industries looking to expand.
For more information about business development
assistance contact the Lufkin/Angelina County
Economic Development Team (936) 633-0251.
Services are also provided for businesses that are
looking to host large scale events or conventions.
Lufkin Pitser Garrison Convention Center provides a
meeting place for a variety of gatherings. The facility
is able to offer customers a wide variety of set-up
choices including seating for up to 2000. The Angelina
County Exposition Center is also a popular
venue for large events. Known as one of the largest
clear span indoor arenas in the nation, the George H.
Henderson Jr. Exposition Center has the ability to seat
up to 10,000 people.
For more information about assistance with
conventions, contact the Lufkin Convention and

Woodland Heights Medical Center
As the first hospital in Lufkin, Woodland Heights Medical Center has been
at the forefront of healthcare in East Texas, continually providing the best
in compassionate care and technology. A key focus is working closely with
physicians, staff and the community to provide the best possible patient
care. From opening the first cardiovascular center in 1987 to being nationally
recognized for quality and safety, Woodland Heights’ team of physicians
and staff are committed to staying on the leading edge of healthcare quality,
innovation and technology.
An example of that leading technology is Woodland Heights’ acquisition
of the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, the latest in robotic surgical equipment.
This is a significant arrival because of the value it offers the surgical staff
and those in the region Woodland Heights serves; this is the only daVinci®
Si™ Surgical System between Tyler and Houston. The technological
advancements of this system provides surgeons with unparalleled precision,
dexterity and control that enable a minimally invasive approach for many
complex surgical procedures.
Imaging and radiology are an important part of the process in diagnosing
a patient and Woodland Heights is happy to offer its patients state-of-theart imaging facilities at both the main hospital location and the outpatient
Diagnostic Center (125 Gaslight Medical Pkwy.).
In May 2012, Woodland Heights Medical Center acquired advanced
medical imaging technology that combines single-photon emission
computed tomography (SPECT) and computed tomography (CT) to enable
physicians to detect heart disease, cancer and other diseases earlier and
target treatments with greater precision.
With the capability to perform multiple scans in a single procedure, the
Symbia SPECT•CT system enhances therapy planning, speeds exam time,
and increases comfort and convenience for the patient, who undergoes a
seamless procedure and only has to make one appointment.
Another recent accomplishment for the Radiology Department was
the recent awarding of a three-year term of accreditation in computed
tomography (CT) as the result of a recent review by the American College
of Radiology (ACR). With this accreditation, Woodland Heights now has
all advanced imaging services (breast ultrasound, computed tomography,
magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine and ultrasound) that are
www.LufkinTexas.org
guide
THE
2013 / Lufkin/Angelina County
offered at both the hospital and outpatient diagnostic
center accredited by the ACR.
When it comes to quality care, Woodland Heights
has been recognized time after time with awards,
certifications and accreditations. For the second
consecutive year, Woodland Heights was awarded
with The Joint Commission’s Top Performer Award
for exemplary performance in using evidence-based
clinical processes. In addition, Woodland Heights is the
only hospital in Lufkin to be an Accredited Chest Pain
Center and Joint Commission Certified in Total Joint
Replacement (Hips & Knees).
Woodland Heights also offers community education
through several affinity programs: Healthy Woman,
Senior Circle and Tiny Toes. These programs not only
offer education, but a social outlet for their members.
More information about these programs and all the
services offered at Woodland Heights is available on our
website at WoodlandHeights.net.
With a medical staff of more than 200 physicians,
Woodland Heights offers a comprehensive list of medical
and surgical specialties and treatment modalities and a
commitment to quality patient care. When it’s time to
choose healthcare for you and your loved ones, choose
well. Choose Woodland Heights Medical Center,
Lufkin’s only Accredited Chest Pain Center.

Hospital of Choice
Memorial Health System of East Texas
As the largest health care system in deep East Texas,
Memorial is a private, not-for-profit hospital system
that provides more than a quarter of a million patient
services each year. Since its inception in 1949, Memorial
has paved the way for quality, innovative health care in
East Texas. In fact, Memorial consistently ranks among
the nation’s best for exceptional health care and patient
satisfaction.
Memorial is comprised of four hospitals, which are
located in Lufkin, Livingston and San Augustine and
the area’s only long-term acute care facility, Memorial
Specialty Hospital. The System recently opened the
doors to the area’s first and only dedicated heart and
stroke care center—the Cardiovascular & Stroke Center
of East Texas.
Through a partnership with Methodist Hospital—
Houston, Memorial is Lufkin’s only Joint Commission
certified primary stroke care facility. Additionally,
Memorial partners with Methodist to provide premiere
cardiovascular care that features a highly trained team
of heart surgeons and cardiologists.
Memorial’s achievements are the result of the vision
that the hospital’s founding members had in 1949—a
healthcare facility to serve the people of East Texas.
This tradition of strength and vision is embodied in
the System’s current Directors and Trustees. Their
direction, combined with the excellence of Memorial’s
physicians and hospital staff, continues to make
Memorial the hospital for life.

The Pines Theatre
Built in 1925, by builder/architect
W.P Berry, the new Pines Theatre
was the center of Lufkin’s social
gatherings. The Pines was initially
used as a vaudeville theatre and
playhouse. The first Grand Opening
was September 9, 1925 and the
theatre was closed sometime in the
1960’s or 1970’s. In 1988 the theatre
was added to the National Register
of Historic Places and in 2007 the
City of Lufkin purchased The
Pines. December 1, 2012 the City of
Lufkin re-opened the doors of The
Pines Theatre with a grand opening
cocktail event featuring Irish tenor
Paul Byrom. A new history is being
created and events of all types from
movies and plays to concerts and
socials are hosted at the theatre. For
more information on booking the
Pines contact Tara Watson-Watkins at

Leadership Lufkin
“After more than 30 years, the Leadership
Lufkin program continues to thrive.
We look forward to working with this
wonderful group of leaders”, stated Mary
King and Dana Smithhart, Leadership
Lufkin Chairmen.
Leadership Lufkin, a program designed
to identify and educate the existing and
potential leaders of Lufkin and Angelina
County, consists of a nine-month program
that includes an opening retreat with a
ropes course, a three-day trip to Austin
to study state government, two days
hosting the Angelina County Science and
Tech Fair, and much more. Participants
in Leadership Lufkin attend sessions that
cover topics such as city, county and state
government, education, health care, social
services, the economy, and the history of
Angelina County.

Leadership Tomorrow
The Leadership
Tomorrow 21st class
poses for a group photo.
The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of
Commerce is proud to announce its 21st class of
the Leadership Tomorrow program. This year
of celebration brings students, parents, sponsors
and school administrators together with
Chairman, Bonnie Dowdy, to make new friends
and learn about the community.
Leadership Tomorrow, hosted by the Chamber, was
designed for high school and home school juniors
in Angelina County and mirrors the Leadership
Lufkin program. Students in the program have the
opportunity to learn about Angelina County first hand,
to explore possible career opportunities that exist in this
area, and give back to the community through three
volunteer service projects.

Dr. David Glenn
Internal Medicine
My hospital for life.
Each year Memorial provides more than a quarter of a
million patient services. From emergency care and surgical
procedures to the treatment of cardiovascular disease and
stroke, more patients trust Memorial for their care.*
Memorial was founded in 1949 by local business and industry
leaders, and the mission to reinvest 100% of all proceeds into
the hospital and community continues today. That philosophy
has made Memorial the recognized leader in quality and
