Autumn Winter Season 2012 Photo courtesy of North Lincolnshire Council Photo courtesy of Kevin Kaye Managed by SMG In Partnership with North Lincolnshire Council Welcome After a fantastic opening period, our Autumn season is upon us and we have a wide variety of events coming up at both of Scunthorpe’s theatres. Despite only being open for a few months, The Baths Hall has had a great start with a number of sell out events. Those who attended Bill Bailey’s opening night show will remember it for a long, long time, while Brendan Cole had people dancing in the aisles back in February. There’s a lot to be excited about in the coming months. Folk star Seth Lakeman makes The Baths Hall his only stop in the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Humber region in October and wrestling returns to the venue during the same month. Roy Chubby Brown brings his controversial, adults-only show to the venue in November whilst pop sensations The Overtones will visit in December. Madness frontman Suggs is visiting the venue in October and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra return for a third time in November. The Plowright Theatre continues to grow from strength to strength. With some fabulous local performances in recent months, there have also been huge turnouts for the likes of Mike Harding and many of our amateur dramatic and dance groups. There’s plenty still to come over the coming months – Irish star Dominic Kirwan visits in October with legendary entertainer Jimmy Cricket set to visit in November. Controversial comedian Jerry Sadowitz will star during the same month with Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson performing in October. New shows are announced all the time and you can keep up to date by visiting our website www.scunthorpetheatres.co.uk or our Facebook pages – www.facebook.com/thebathshall and www.facebook.com/theplowright We look forward to seeing you at our venues again soon. The music of the Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers growing up in the mid 70’s. The face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown. With Les leading the way, the band’s singles and albums shot to the number one spot all over the globe. Massive hits such as Bye Bye Baby, Shang A Lang, Summer Love Sensation and Give A Little Love (to name just a few) propelled the band to world-wide superstardom and their trademark Scottish tartan was to be seen everywhere across the planet. As seen on BBC’s The One Show, The Sounds of Simon is a tribute to the wonderful music of Simon and Garfunkel. Lose yourself to nostalgia as the full band play such classics as Mrs Robinson, The Boxer, The Sound of Silence and You Can Call Me Al as well as all the others that have established Paul Simon as one of the most successful songwriters of all time. Paul and Art are played to perfection, bringing in elements of their famously fractious relationship, as well as replicating the beautiful harmonies flawlessly. This is a wonderful show filled with excellent music, nostalgia, and a genuine love for some great musicians. One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating more than 40 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant. Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album ‘Eight Frames a Second’ and in 1974 the release of ‘Streets of London’ earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 1993, Nanci Griffith recorded ‘From Clare to Here’ on her Grammy Award winning album and in 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Cautious, cowardly Fred Colon, the desk sergeant who communicates with his wife through notes left on the kitchen table and weasely Nobby Nobbs, who carries documents to prove he is actually human are led by Captain Vimes, whose ideals of upholding the law in the city he loves have been slowly crushed, leaving him a drunken cynic. Two new arrivals upset their comfortable rut. The first, an enthusiastic new recruit: Carrot Ironfoundersson, human by birth but dwarf by upbringing. The second, a large, angry, firebreathing dragon… Folk star Seth Lakeman is to perform at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe on Saturday, 20 October as part of his nationwide tour. The Scunthorpe date is the only show on his 16 date tour in the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Humber region. Seth will be performing tracks from his new album Tales From The Barrel House, which is out now on his own Honour Oak Records. Seth, who has three Top 40 albums under his belt, is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005. A heartbreaking story recalling one of the darker pages of our industrial history. This poignant play revolves around Sally Hardcastle and her family. Will she fight or sacrifice her integrity to secure the happiness of the people she loves the most? There can’t be any doubt… Jerry Sadowitz is the world’s most offensive and most offended comedian on the planet and he’s coming to a town near you! This is a whole other level of humour… nothing, repeat nothing, is off limits. Where other comics finish, Sadowitz begins. Think of the number of “shocking” comics the UK has thrown up in the last ten years… Gervais, Carr, Stanhope, Jeffries, Boyle, Chubby Brown. Forget it. They’re the variations, the warmup acts, the advance party… all of them got their start from this man… Jerry Sadowitz - the original, rarely-seen, hilarious, abusive, sweary, confrontational, uncensored, comedian, magician and psychopath. Grimethorpe Colliery Band The Overtones Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band with Carols & Capers Sun 9 Dec 7.30pm Wed 12 Dec 7.00pm Thurs 13 Dec 7.30pm The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is probably the nation’s favourite colliery band with an international reputation for excellence on both the concert and contest stage. The band was formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded, Cudworth Colliery Band. Since then it has featured in film, TV and radio and the band is justifiably proud of its history and achievements. The band also starred in and provided the soundtrack for the 1996 British hit film ‘Brassed Off’ which also featured Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald and Ewan McGregor. The Overtones have dazzled audiences with their flawless performance, winning charm and impeccable style. Having originally formed in 2006, The Overtones have created a unique sound, blending the essence of vocal groups of yesteryear with the best of classic, present-day British pop. One of the biggest success stories of 2011, Mark Franks, Mike Crawshaw, Darren Everest, Timmy Matley and Lachie Chapman have seen their debut album Good Ol’ Fashioned Love sell more than 400,000 copies with a peak chart position of number 4. The band had the second best selling debut from a UK group last year.. Following the hugely popular 2010 Christmas tour, renowned folk singer Maddy Prior joins up once again with the Carnival Band during the Festive Season for their unique celebratory show ‘Carols & Capers’. Together they mix renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments with a refreshing cavalier attitude and plenty of humour putting their inimitable stamps on a range of familiar and not-so-familiar festive fare. This will guarantee to be a Christmas Party to remember.
