Number 1. May 2012 Welcome to the first DDNZ supporters newsletter! 2011 marked the long planned start of our club’s activities; the importation of Hera II v. Eikendorf from Hamm, Germany and highly successful whelping of our co-operative’s first litter (A-litter v. Makuri). Now as our club grows and becomes more active, it’s a good time to begin a periodical newsletter to share our successes and document club activities. It would be great to include member contributions so please send in photos or text that you would like to share. The last months have been marked with two major achievements for DDNZ; admission as an Associated Group of the Verein Deutsch-Drahthaar e.V. Germany and the importation of New Zealand’s second breeding-certified German Deutsch-Drahthaar. Hera II v. Eikendorf: from VDD Westfalen to New Zealand. DDNZ’s foundation female arrived in NZ direct from Frankfurt on the 10 th August 2011. Purchased from the kennel of Helmut Nordhaus, Hera has VJP (77), HZP (193), VGP (311 P1) and a Form/Hair score of 10/11. Hera was imported in whelp to top VDD stud Iras vom Fuchsberg, a repeat of the breeding that produced the very successful J-litter v. Eikendorf. Happily Iras was later selected as the top living VDD sire based upon evaluation of his progeny. We are indebted to Helmut and his wife Conny for the donation of Iras’ service and their considerable time in breeding and preparing Hera for export. DDNZ Co-operative’s foundation litter: A - Litter v. Makuri Hera’s master Chris Pullar and his wife Christine whelped DDNZ’s inaugural litter on the 19 th September 2011 at their home in the Pohangina Valley. Three male and four female braunschimmel pups were the result of our months of planning, and cooperative investment - a great result! Australasia’s first Deutsch-Drahthaar litter registered with the VDD studbook (No. 217510 - ). Following eight weeks of development and socialisation the tattooed, micro-chipped, and DNA profiled pups joined their new masters; Micha, Mike, Graham, Martin, Bryan, Grant and Ben. Thanks to Chris and Christine who made a grand job of our first litter, hosted a pup selection day and kindly donated their costs in rearing the litter. DDNZ Training Day led by Ellmar Meder In January, DDNZ hosted Ellmar Meder a visiting German VDD member for a weekend training event. Organised by Micha Mahler and hosted by Grant Tipling at his home in Matakana, the weekend was a great chance to get all of our v. Makuri pups together to learn from Ellmar’s extensive training experience. With one day set aside to host versatile gundog folk with other breeds, Ellmar was able to meet kiwi hunters and address their interest in the VDD training methods. The training day was also reported in a local newspaper article. Thanks to Micha and Grant for organising this event and to Ellmar for sharing his vacation time and knowledge with us. www.drahthaar.org.nz Copyright © 2012 Deutsch-Drahthaar New Zealand Incorporated, all rights reserved. This meeting formalised the hand-over of the Chairman’s role to Martin Reid from founding Chairman Matt Deighton, now living in Australia. A highlight was a presentation by ex-pat German Michael Doerner on the Jagdgebrauchshundverband (JGHV) testing system used by VDD clubs. Key to this was discussion of pup preparation for our first VJP natural ability performance test. Admission of DDNZ as an Associated Group of the Verein Deutsch-Drahthaar e.V. The 2012 general assembly of the VDD was held on the 17th March at Fulda, Germany. A formal application for admission of DDNZ along with a pictorial presentation of NZ hunting and DDNZ was tabled on our behalf by DDWV Geschäftsführer Hans-Werner Monreal. Thanks to all who contributed towards our presentation. The DDNZ application was passed unanimously. Formalisation of the DDNZ relationship with our parent club represents huge support from the VDD and secures the future of the Deutsch-Drahthaar breed in New Zealand. We are most grateful to the VDD executives for allowing us this privilege. International recognition of DDNZ comes following a five year process that club founder Matt Deighton has traversed on behalf of DDNZ since 2007. Thanks to the many people in Germany who have assisted in the development of DDNZ to date, in particular; Jan Schafberg and DDWV Geschäftsführen Wolf Schmidt-Körby, Siegfried Desch, Otmar Klamp and Hans-Werner Monreal. Jan, Siegfried and Otmar all travelled to Ireland to discuss the development of DDNZ with Matt between 2009 and 2011. Astor vom Mounthillary: From VDD Bremen to New Zealand via Ireland Our first stud dog arrived in NZ on Good Friday direct from Dublin. Astor was bred for DDNZ with assistance from VDD Bremen Breedwarden and v. d. Lönsbirke Breeder, Horst Wiegmann. In April 2011 Matt travelled to Bremen for the VJP where Astor attained 70 points. With training advice from Ute Kloth, Astor’s HZP (176) and physical exams were run in Ireland. Thanks to judges Norbert Feuerbach, Jan Schafberg, Ines and Andrea Heutger who travelled from Germany to undertake this special HZP! With a form/hair score of 10/10 and A-grade hip radiography, Astor is an exciting addition to the DDNZ cooperative. Please contact Matt or Martin if you would like to meet Astor.
