THE STANDARD FOR ARCHITECTURAL SPACE SINCE 1898

JORDAN HALL AT NEC
Lighting Designer: Charles Cosler Theater Consultation
& Stage Design
Architect: Ann Beha & Associates, Architects
Objectives: To provide an even level of dimmable soft lighting for the
stage and house areas of this historic concert hall. It was critical that
there be as few fixtures as possible to avoid distracting the audience
or to detract from the beautiful and historic ceilings.
Execution: By using a recessed, highly effective quartz downlight,
which has a standard 5” aperture, the designer was able to provide
the needed level of illumination. By using a tilt, the slope of the ceiling
could be compensated as well as the fixtures could be tilted slightly
forward so the viewers below could not look directly into the light
source. The light was warmed by using a gold reflector.
Results: An even light level was achieved in addition to having the
flexibility of the dimming, full color spectrum of light , and extended
lamp life that comes with the use of tungsten-halogen lamp source.
The concert hall, both house areas and main stage, have the needed
light levels without detracting or impacting the historic architectural
space.

There are many thousands of old style incandescent downlites made between 1936 and 1968 by Rambusch, Century, Kliegel and others.
Rambusch has a conversion kit, standard being for Rambusch, that leaves the ceiling mounting ring and plate in place. It also utilizes the
same wiring, but changes the fixture itself, using the tungsten-halogen lamp. The result is either a substantial increase of the original intended
light output, or a cut in half of the power consumed. Lamp life goes from c.750 hours to c.2,000 or c.4-5,000 if 130-volt lamp is used. Being
a tungsten-halogen lamp means the original continuous spectrum fine-color rendition that is most easily dimmed. Gas discharge lamps do
not easily or effectively dim, resulting in ballast noise (humming) as well as monochromatic-distorted colors.

OUR LADY OF ANGELS Chapel
Baltimore, MD
Architect: Kelly, Clayton & Mojescak
Interior: Francis Gibbons
Engineer: Spears Votta & Associates
Lighting Designer: Bruce Dunlop
The interior of this house of worship, like many, is a complex space.
It requires having to create an environment in which an atmosphere of
worship and meditation is fostered, while permitting the reading of
prayer books and hymnals. The careful renovation of this rich traditional
space included the refitting of the Church’s existing Rambusch lighting
system of dome lights and architectural uplites. Newer, more powerful
and efficient fixtures allowed for a higher level of illumination which
enhanced its architectural detail without distracting from its function
for the congregation and their religious activities.

SACRED HEART Cathedral, Richmond VA
Architect: Aquino & Winthrop
Lighting Designer: Viggo B. Rambusch
Fixtures: RD-60-500-Q-T30-RETRO
(page 110)
Since inventing and receiving patents on the recessed ellipsoidal
Rambusch Downlight in 1937, Rambusch has continuously updated this
classic fixture’s technology to reflect the many changes that have
occurred over six decades of use. There are thousands of applications
throughout the country where the older, less efficient fixtures are still in
use. This project is a prime example where Rambusch retrofit a new
optic system with current lamp technology, to provide more light using
less energy. (500W electrical consumption versus the old 750W lamp,
and new lamp life of 2,000 hours versus the older 500 hours.) The new
optic with a 500W lamp provides more light than the old 750W lamp.
Utilizing the existing power connection, a new fixture is mounted on the
existing face plate, without requiring any alteration to the ceiling wiring
or installation. This change resulted in more light and at considerable
savings to the church, and there was a three-year payback.

The Rambusch Hospital Examination Recessed
Downlite has been designed specifically
for use over patient’s beds in hospitals
and in hospital examination rooms (meets
VA photometric requirements). The high
efficiency (56.3%) and low brightness of the
downlite is achieved through our use of a
specular Alzak reflector, special lens, and a
combination regressed aperture and baffle
system which projects a rectangular beam
over the length of the patient. Listed by
Underwriters Laboratories, the RD-HE-60-500
carries the I.B.E.W. label.

B'NAI JESHURUN SYNAGOGUE
NEW YORK CITY
Architect: Bromley, Caldari Architects PC
Lighting Designer: Charles Cosler Theatre Design, Inc.
In renovating this turn-of-the-century synagogue in Manhattan, the
damaged, ornate plasterwork ceiling had to be replaced and a completely new lighting scheme devised to fulfill its aesthetic and functional demands. The plaster ceiling was removed and in its place the
architects designed a bold structural framework for the new lighting
system (with 4 types of lighting...ambient, accent, uplighting and
special mood lighting), programmed to preset "moods" that could
accommodate various seating configurations, religious uses and
occasions. Rambusch pendant downlites were hung from the ceiling through the 'structure'...PAL-88 Uplites were mounted on a
perimeter catwalk...amber and blue gelled lighting was projected on
to the ceiling above...and decorative fixtures in alcoves were
upgraded and tied into the overall system. By being able to select
one of the five standard Uplite light patterns, the designer was able
to choose the shape of indirect light needed for this specific architectural space. Appropriately, the newly renovated synagogue was
opened for worship during Hanukkah, the Jewish "festival of lights".

YERBA-BUENA GARDENS - THEATER
Lighting Designer: Synergy Consultants
Architect: James Stewart Polsheck & Partners
Objectives: To provide a dimmable lighting source that would
blend into the structural elements of the catwalk system. The lighting
fixtures must provide a visually even light level within the beam
distribution of light. The light level must be the same even though
the mounting heights vary throughout the theater space.
Execution: By adjusting the standard recessed fixture into a flexible mounting system for the catwalk application, a fixture that provided the needed lighting distribution in a flexible mounting system
was accomplished.
Results: A fixture that met both the performance and mounting
needs of the space was created. In addition, the fixture could easily be serviced from the catwalk above. Due to the design of the catwalk mounting system, when the optic was replaced it would return
to the previous adjustment and thus previous light distribution.

ST. MARY’s Church
Alexandria, MN
Architect: HGA
Liturgical Designer: Br. Frank T. Kacmarcik Obl.S.B.
For the dramatic space of this contemporary house of worship, the
lighting system had to be multi-functional for the varied use of the space
and its congregation. Additionally, the lighting had to maintain the
atmosphere of the interior for both its daytime infusion of natural light
and in the evenings.
The array of suspended pendant light fixtures provide a delicate,
unobtrusive element in this architectural interior that is flexible,
functional and in keeping with the spirit of the surroundings.
Rambusch Pendant downlite fixtures were modified to include
added uplites to achieve the desired lighting effect.

CHRIST CHURCH, Cranbrook, Michigan
Architect: Jickling Lymon Powell Associates
Lighting Designer: Viggo Bech Rambusch
Fixtures: BD-60-500-Q-SF
(page 121)
A critical task was to create a lighting system that would deliver
adequate light so that the congregation could read and worship
comfortably. The installation of lowerable Rambusch Downlites
in front of the wooden trusses provided light unobtrusively, barely
visible to the congregation below and behind, while it achieved the
needed levels of light for reading and worship. This allowed for
light without impacting upon the integrity of the worship space.

The Rambusch PD, BD and SD series have
been designed specifically for use in a variety
of public spaces, in locations where an efficient downlighting system with exposed luminaires are required or where recess space is
not available. The use of PAR lamps provides
both narrow and wide beam patterns.
The PD, BD and SD series are listed by the
Underwriters’ Laboratories for use in both fireproof and non-fireproof construction and
is approved by the The Canadian
Standards Association. They carry the
I.B.E.W. Local 3 label.
