Texas Business Alliance Overview
Texas Business Alliance (TBA) is a nonprofit, membership-driven leader of small business promotion, advocacy
and development (“P.A.D.”).
Vision and Mission Statements
TBA vision is to strengthen the Texas economy and spur job creation by expanding minority- and women-owned
businesses (MWBEs), and encouraging youth entrepreneurship. TBA has a mission to equip minority- and womenowned businesses to be qualified suppliers, ready to compete for public, private and international opportunities
through progressive development and specialized training.
Statement of Need
Small businesses employ two-thirds of the country’s private sector workforce, represent 99.7 percent of
all employer firms, represent 97.3 percent of all the exporters of goods, and generate a majority of the
innovations that come from U.S. companies, according the Small Business Administration.Yet, 637,100 new
businesses were created in 2007 and 560,300 closed, and there were 28,322 bankruptcies. Additionally, MWBEs
disproportionately have fewer contract opportunities and capital access.
TBA has developed six core programs as a result of its years of research to more specifically address the
development gaps in a way that has not yet been addressed.
Description
The six core TBA programs are: Business Enterprise Academy®, One Woman National Business Conference®,
The Prime Objective®, Capital Connections®, Community Collaboratives®, and the Youth Entrepreneurship
Academy®. The programs have a specific focus on industries severely underrepresented by MWBEs:
construction, energy, manufacturing/wholesale/distribution, transportation, technology, engineering and medical.
Common among all of the TBA programs is an intense focus on the following:
infrastructure management, safety, effective marketing/advertising, financial management, information technology,
legal solutions, insurance, investments/retirement, human resources/personnel management, accessing capital, joint
venture partnerships, project management, real estate leasing/ownership, networking, certification, mentoring by
industry professionals, RFP/RFQ training and presentation skills.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of TBA MWBE development programs is to close the development gaps that a) keep MWBEs from
competing on a larger stage, or b) contribute to MWBE business failure.
The primary objectives include:

reating a measurable pipeline of multicultural MWBEs ready for contract opportunities and making

eveloping top-notch educational models that can be leveraged locally, regionally, nationally and

internationally by TBA chapter networks and other member-driven organizations.

Assisting our MWBE members with access to capital.
E quipping high school and college students with the tools and resources to pursue an entrepreneurial

I am so excited to celebrate with each of you, as we are all gathered here at the
Sugar Land Marriott for this year’s One Woman National Business Conference®.
I would like to thank God and express my sincere gratitude to the sponsors,
vendors, speakers, One Woman committee, MWH Public Relations, the
volunteers and YOU, for investing your time, talent and treasure into making this
conference a success.
Can you believe it has been a whole year since we had our last conference? So
much has changed, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the perseverance of
women-owned businesses and the success stories that I hear from them daily.
The response to the conference has been overwhelming, garnering registrants
from across the country and the globe.

Ling has reported from dozens of countries covering stories that are too often ignored.
She is the co-executive producer and host of “Our America” on the Oprah Winfrey
Network (OWN) and a field correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is
also a contributor to ABC News’ Nightline. Ling was the first female host of National
Geographic’s Explorer series.
She got her start in journalism as a correspondent for Channel One News where she
covered the civil war in Afghanistan at 21 years of age. She later went on to become a
co-host of ABC Daytime’s hit show The View, which won its first daytime Emmy during
her time at the show. Ling was a special correspondent for CNN’s Planet in Peril series
and is a contributing editor for USA Today’s USA Weekend magazine.
Ling is the co-author of “Mother, Sister. Daughter, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood,” and
“Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and The Other’s Fight to
Bring Her Home” that she penned with her sister Laura. Ling is the co-founder of
iVolunteer.org and secretsocietyofwomen.com.
Topic: The Importance of a Global Perspective Lisa will recount stories that profoundly
changed her life. She will talk about how travel and going beyond one’s comfort zone is
wholly transformative and makes one smarter, more well-rounded and marketable.

Damali Keith is weekend anchor for Fox 26 News at 9 and a general
assignments reporter for Fox 26 News at 9. Damali is originally from Wayne,
Mich., and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications from Clark
University in Atlanta, Ga. She started as a general assignments reporter and
sports anchor on Century Communications’ Cable 8 channel in Owensboro,
Kent. Damali worked as a reporter for FOX 13, WHBQ TV in Memphis, Tenn,
just prior to joining Fox 26.

Psalmist, Speaker, Lyricist and Actor
Loretta Williams Gurnell is a soul-stirring psalmist, speaker, lyricist and actor.
Her refreshing sound and heart-wrenching lyrics soothe the soul while

Deborah Duncan is well-versed in the talk show genre having hosted both television and
radio talk shows that relied on her versatility, quick-wittedness and being in tune with
what Houstonians want to know. Deborah is a graduate of the UT and began her career
at the CBS station in Austin. She was co-host of Good Morning Texas from 1994-1997
at KHOU’s sister station WFAA. Deborah has also worked for Lifetime Television and

and to produce quality work.

Track IV:Youth Explosion!
Four teams of four youth each received a business case study on
LAMIK Beauty. The business case outlined the business history,
competitors, growth and opportunities as well as provided a
business problem needing a solution. Over the course of three
weeks, youth teams raised funds to support their involvement in
the competition and developed presentations to LAMIK Beauty.
During the One Woman National Business Conference, teams
present their final solutions and winners are awarded. Winners
are awarded technology tools and automatically enrolled in the
Texas Business Alliance six-month small business incubator for
youth -- the Youth Entrepreneurship Academy Class III, February
2012 through August 2012.

What is One Woman Shark Tank?
One Woman Shark Tank provides entrepreneurs (the shark contestant) the opportunity to pitch her/his
business to a panel of judges during the Saturday, August 20 Soaring Heights Awards. The sharks want to
devour their competition to win a prize package of cash and prizes valued at $5,000. Judges will select a
winner based on the best 60-second, hard-sales pitch.
