First, students identified a particular application domain and then proposed one or more design solutions. The input has been to look to the future to imagine new possibilities for interaction, use and application of ceramic material that could be integrated with technologies and other materials. The students worked in four groups working on it four concepts across a variety of fields of inquiry. Concept by Diego Florez, Katerina Dimitriou Coexistence This concept is investigating the opportunities for integration between the ceramic material and green, in particular natural moss. This is an interesting area of development for the decoration of interior and exterior walls very much in line with the contemporary architectural trends. 1 EDITION 2011 st WORKSHOP 2 INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS OF SWITCHES AND PLATES Brief “Development of innovative design concept in home automation and wiring devices (switches and plates)”. Company AVE S.p.a. Aim The aim of the workshop was to define new product concepts, with reference to the system plates/switches that were introduced by AVE at the kick-off meeting. The innovative concept were developed in response to the requirements defined in new usage scenarios identified by the participants. The concepts resulted in the creation of new features and solutions in the application of existing functions to new contexts of use, in the definition of new product lines, or in the evolution of existing ones. Concept by Diego Bravo, Han Tianshu, Laura Trivilino This concept is developed in the framework of Ambient Intelligence and explores the theme of interaction through a new switch that is based on features that enhance proximity, multy touch and gestures. 1 EDITION 2011 st Concept by Érica Martins, Mayra Iokoi Experience The concept of this project is based on the aim of making the visitors experiencing the concact with nature. The solutions foresees a walk through blocks of buildings that refer to 4 natural elements: fire (solar panel), water (aquarium), air (natural breeze) and land (vegetables garden). The concept is developed on a carful use of empty and full spaces. WORKSHOP 3 FROM CONTAINERS TO EXPOSITION MODULES EXPO 2015 Brief “The workshop aims at generating innovative concepts in the building sector, in particular in the design of architectural modules for the exposition sector. The modules will be designed starting from the reuse of containers.” Company Meraviglia S.p.a. Aim The design theme was the development of new innovative concepts of exhibition modules to be used for the Expo 2015. The modules were designed starting from reuse of containers to achieve maximum flexibility, simplicity and functionality while maintaining the maximum solid construction. The concept were developed in response to the requirements defined in the analysis phase of the workshop. Concept Tien Yao Wu, Yang Chih-Ching, Tianshu Han This concept elaborates the expo spaces using the containers with two approaches: a regular one for the exposition phase and a random one for the garden layout. Also the projects suggests the use of the containers as transportable small gardens after the Expo. 2 EDITION 2012 nd WORKSHOP 1 NEW TILE WALLS Brief “Development of innovative concepts of tiles’ systems of for the building industry, with particular focus to the field of application of the wall coverings.” Company Cisa Ceramiche Aim The aim of the workshop was the development of innovative concepts of tiles for residential or tertiary buildings, with particular reference to design solutions suitable for field application of the wall coverings. The concepts were developed after an analysis of trends and user expectations. They all looked new hints to develop the ceramic wall covering field beyond the traditional applications. Concept by Mohamad Hani Mahfouz This concept is based on a research on interaction and flexibility of the use of tiles. The solution is a wall system that holds the tiles and enable the costumer to rotate them in order to change the configuration and thus the final aesthetical effect. 2 EDITION 2012 nd WORKSHOP 2 BUILDING WITH USED CONTAINERS Brief “Development of concepts of reuse of containers in the context of architectural design”. Company Container Box Aim The theme of the workshop was facing the issues of empty containers that today fills up our territories. After getting to our country full of goods they are not worth being reused or shipped back to the countries they come from (typically China). So it was asked to think about a way to give them a new use and, thus, value. Concept by Miguel Angel Jiménez The concept is base on the idea that a shipping container is not Architecture just because it’s large enough to house a man. It can be worked to become a space shaped in Architecture, but also it can be thought as a component itself, just as a brick. In this case the “brick” was used to develop a new concept of prison with an architectural solution that would easily fit into the urban contexts. Concept by Rachid Khalil This concept proposes to answer to a request of mobility among people all around the world. Indeed people move more and more often to temporarily live and work in other countries. Thus the solution is to ship your small apartment, which is a furnished container the fits into a building of containers. The solutions exploits the existing system of transport and storage of containers adding services for the best life quality of final users. 3 EDITION 2013 rd WORKSHOP 2 UNPLUGGED BRIEF Development of concepts for Temporary Exhibition Pavilion to place in the city centre of Milan AIM The aim of the workshop was to develop new concepts for temporary exhibition pavilion for the city center of Milan (Piazzetta Reale or Triennale) to build in occasion of Expo 2015. During the development of the concept, students had to develop a concept taking into consideration the spirit of the pavilion (in terms of the design, the possible commitment, philosophy of the pavilion and the relationship with the chosen area), and the use of the pavilion itself (such as: library, book shop, info point, loungebar, and museum). Concept by Caroline Kinsella, Melissa Sobrado, Juan Felipe Solís The concept is based on the idea of a pavilion as a living organism inside the city. This pavilion is made up of three elements: the sun, the air and the water; that are the fundamentals for life. In particular, these elements are important for growing Algae that can be used for producing bio-fuel. The philosophy behind this project is to create an experiential path for highlighting the importance of sustainable, renewable and non-polluting solutions. RAMP EXPERIENCE 3 EDITION 2013 rd WORKSHOP 3 URBAN OASIS BRIEF The generation of innovative concepts of Multipurpose Building Modules with versatility and flexibility (in the structure, composition, customization) suitable for temporary and diversified uses (from residential to commercial) typical of large events, such as the Expo 2015 that will take place in Milan and its surroundings. COMPANY Bertone AIM The aim of the workshop was to develop innovative concepts of multipurpose building modules that have to be placed in the urban and peripheral areas outside the Expo’s Site. In particular, modules should be temporary structures used for two alternative purpose: support services to the Expo events (i.e. accommodation for visitors or temporary workers, temporary offices, dining areas, retail, support to tourism, etc..); or support independent but complementary activities (sponsored by companies / entities outside the Expo). Concepts were developed taking into consideration the principles of assembly and standardization with a view to industrial prefabrication. Furthermore, we asked students to consider the end of life or re-use of the product (or parts of it). That means they had to plan what will happen to the module after the end of Expo 2015.
