SNPJ National Secretary
IMPERIAL, Pa. — The 30th Quadrennial
Convention is less than two weeks away. It’s
so hard to believe that another four years have
passed since we met at Quail Hollow Resort
in 2010.
Delegates, you should soon receive all of the
information relevant to your trip to Daytona
Beach, Fla. We have sent you the confirmation
numbers for your rooms at the hotel, the information regarding the transportation you will be
using between the airport and hotel, and other
pertinent information you will need.
The Lodge secretaries from Lodges that
have delegates have been sent the credential
forms for their delegates. They must have these
forms signed by the Lodge president and Lodge
secretary, and then give them to the delegates.
These forms must be presented by the delegates
to the Credentials Committee upon check-in on
the first day of the convention. If you come to
the convention without your completed Delegate
Credential form, we must ask the convention
body if they will seat you as a delegate. In
other words, please do not forget to bring this
form with you!
The office at the convention will be housed
in the Ponce de Leon boardroom and will be
open Sunday, Aug. 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. and
from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for delegate registration.
The office will reopen Monday morning, Aug.
18, at 7 a.m. and will remain open during the
convention.
The welcome reception will begin Sunday
evening at 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and musical

A Clean Sweep for Lodge 165 Members
On May 17, Lodge 165 young adult and SNPJ Scholarship recipient Kelcie Sztroin
organized “Operation: Clean Sweep.” The cleanup project took place on Layton Road in
Perryopolis, Pa. Lodge 165 Secretary/Treasurer Donna Pidanich was instrumental in providing
transportation for all participants, and the gloves, trash bags and vests were donated by PA
Clean Ways. Several Lodge members and their families worked together to remove trash from
the sides of a large section of the roadway. A luncheon was held afterward for all participants,
compliments of Lodge 165.
And the winner is...
The $100 winner of the first quarter drawing in the
2014 SNPJ Recommender Program is:
Jennifer Provenza, Lodge 216, Verona, Pa.

Summer fun still to come
at the SNPJ Heritage Center
by KATHY PAULENICH (776)
SNPJ Heritage Center Committee
BOROUGH OF SNPJ, Pa. — Here we are,
starting the third month of summer and looking
forward to a really great Fraternal Weekend,
scheduled Aug. 8-9 at the SNPJ Recreation
Center. The SNPJ Slovenian Heritage Center
will host a wine and cheese reception as a
kickoff to Fraternal Weekend on Friday, Aug. 8,
starting at 6:30 p.m. in the old Heritage Center
room downstairs.
We would like to encourage you to stay for the
7 p.m. presentation of the film Rooster’s Breakfast, a romantic comedy about small town life
in Slovenia. Joe Valencic (5), who often works
with the film’s director, Marko Naberšnik, will
share behind-the-scenes stories on the making
of this popular Slovenian film.
Rooster’s Breakfast is based on the novel
by Feri Lainšček. The story is about a young
mechanic named Djuro who works in Goja’s
garage and begins a risky love affair with a
beautiful brunette named Bronja. But Bronja
is married to Lepec, the local mob boss. Come
to this special screening to see what happens!
Rooster’s Breakfast became the most
watched Slovenian film when it was released
in 2007, and it won the Audience Choice Award
at the Slovenian Film Festival. Enjoy a rare
opportunity to view a hit Slovenian film with
commentary by Joe Valencic, president of the
Cleveland SNPJ Federation and the National
Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum. Admission is free. The film is two hours
long with English subtitles and is rated PG-13;
viewers are advised of strong language and
brief nudity.
After the movie, adjourn to the Gostilna

STRABANE, Pa. — The Lodge
138 Duck Race is now history, and
what a day it was! Despite a bad
start with steady rain early in the
day, our famous event turned into
a huge, unexpected success.
The crowd turned out to be the
estimated largest in our 20-year
history, making it a fantastic 20th
birthday party. The only drawback
was that the race couldn’t take place
due to the excessively strong current.
Consequently, plan B was put into
place and the winning tickets were
drawn from a box by Miss SNPJ 2015
Nicole Vehar. Everyone seemed to
have a good time.
A huge thank you goes out to all
those who donated their time and effort; it is greatly appreciated. Kudos
as well to everyone who donated a
covered dish. Your generosity really
is a major key to the race’s success.
Thanks again!

It’s Greek to me
M
y son is a computer programmer, and sometimes
when he tries to explain his work to me I feel like
he is speaking Greek. The same is true when
he tries to describe how fantasy football works, or when
my husband explains what had to be repaired on the car.
They’re speaking English, but it all hits my ears as Greek.
There are a lot of areas where we are just not familiar
with the lingo, and therefore we are lost when someone
who is familiar with the language starts rattling on with what
they think is an easy-to-understand explanation. It made
me realize that when we talk to our members about life
insurance, many times they are probably hearing Greek. I’ll
try to give you an explanation of some of the basic terms
that we are so familiar with in the insurance industry.
Permanent insurance is protection for life. This type of
coverage can provide cash values and most of these plans
are eligible for dividends. While permanent insurance will
initially cost more than term insurance, it is the better buy
over the long run when you need coverage for a lifetime.
Term insurance is insurance coverage for a certain
period of time. At each renewal period, the cost of insurance
will increase. Term insurance provides the most protection
for the least amount of money and is your best buy if you
are looking for protection for a specified amount of time.
The face amount of a life insurance policy is the amount
for which you are insured. The cash value of a policy is
the excess premium that has accumulated in your policy.
This cash value is what allows a policy to maintain its
level premium payment structure. The death benefit is
the amount payable to your beneficiaries upon your death.
A policy is paid up when there are no longer any premium
payments due. Several of our whole life policies – 10-Pay
Life, 20-Pay Life, and Life Paid Up at Age 55, 60 or 65 –
are designed so that the premiums are paid for a shorter
period of time and the policy is paid up at the end of that
time. A policy will lapse, or terminate, if the premium is not

Ljubljana (STA) — On July 21,
formal proceedings were set in motion
for the upcoming local elections to elect
mayors, councillors and other representatives of local government in 212
municipalities. The date of the election
has been set for Oct. 5
Some election front-runners have
already announced their candidacies,
foremost, the incumbent mayors of
Ljubljana and Maribor, while most of
the parties are still registering potential
candidates and have been tight-lipped
about their election plans.
The deadline for registration of
candidates for mayors and members of
municipal councils will expire Sept. 10.
From July 21 through Sept. 10, the independents will be collecting signatures in
support of their candidacies.
Independents running in a mayoral
election are required to collect signatures
from at least two percent of the voters
who cast their vote in the first round of
the latest regular mayoral election, but
not fewer than 15 nor more than 2,500.
The number of signatures needed for
independents running for positions as
councillors is one percent, with the lowest number of signatures again set at 15.
The number of eligible voters for
each municipality has been released on
the Interior Ministry’s website. Eligible
candidates are those registered as permanently residing in the municipality,
including foreign nationals.
Citizens of other EU countries permanently or temporarily residing in Slovenia
have the right to vote and be elected in
the elections to the municipal councils.
They can also cast their ballots in the
mayoral elections, but only Slovenian
nationals can run for mayor.
Overcrowded Slovenian
prisons lacking funds
Ljubljana (STA) — Slovenia’s
prison population is growing, currently
numbering 1,545 or 0.074 percent of the
population, which is 127 more than in
2012. The overcrowding is giving the
Slovenian Prison Administration trouble
ensuring stability which has already been
endangered by budget cuts.
Slovenia has six penitentiary facilities in 13 locations with a joint housing
capacity of 1,293 prisoners. One prison is
intended for female prisoners, and there
is also a forensic psychology department
at Maribor Hospital.
The current prison occupancy rate
is at an average 119.5 percent, but overcrowding is far worse in the Ljubljana
facility, which is 50 percent beyond
capacity. Overcrowding is also an issue
in the maximum security division at
Dob Prison, the country’s largest prison,
and in Maribor, according to the Prison
Administration.
In mid-July, the government debated
the difficult financial situation of the
Slovenian Prison Administration, which
estimates the available funds will suffice
for another 10 months, while the rest of
the financial liabilities will have to be
transferred over to 2015.
The Prison Administration has not
been able to cover the costs of inmates’
health insurance for years, and the latest
data shows that by the end of this year
$1.28 million in medical bills will go
unsettled.
In order to ensure stability in the
prison system, as well as decent working
conditions, 40 new staff should be hired
to join the 845 current employees, which
would require an additional $540,000 in
2014 and $3.4 million in 2015 to cover
their salaries.
The overcrowded prisons have already earned Slovenia fines from the
European Court of Human Rights, which
in 2010 ordered the country to pay five
prisoners a total of $53,000 due to poor
living conditions.
To deal with the overcrowding in
the short-run, the government decided
a few years ago to introduce alternative
sentences, such as “open prisons” where
the inmates work during the week and
stay in prisons on the weekends. The
most recent data indicates that there are
53 “weekend inmates;” however, only
white-collar criminals are eligible to
serve the open prison sentence. In the
meantime, overcrowding has also led to
a transfer of convicts from maximum to
medium-security divisions.
To resolve the issue comprehensively,
the government is planning to build a
new prison in Ljubljana to replace the
old one, which was never intended as a
prison. Justice Minister Senko Pličanič
announced last November that the new

Slovenian hospital opens
to Italian mothers-to-be
Nova Gorica (STA) — Several
hundred expectant mothers from Italy
are expected to give birth at the Nova
Gorica Hospital in Slovenia every year
following the closing of the maternity
hospital in the neighboring city of Go
rizia, Italy, in late July.
An agreement allowing expectant
mothers from the Italian province of
Gorizia to give birth at the nearby Slovenian maternity hospital was signed
in mid-July by representatives of the
Slovenian hospital and Friuli-Venezia
Giulia region in Italy.
Although this proposal has been in
the works for several years, it was only
recently that this cross-border cooperation to deliver babies had been hindered
by bureaucratic obstacles. The biggest
setback was health insurance; Italian
women who gave birth at Franc Derganc
Nova Gorica Hospital had to pay for the
delivery themselves. The cost of delivery
at the Slovenian hospital is a little under
$950; a C-section costs around $2,400.
However, under the terms of the agreement, a price “somewhere in between”
has been agreed upon with Italian health
insurance providers, hospital director
Darko Žiberna said.
Interestingly, Italian babies born
in Šempeter pri Gorici, the village on
the outskirts of Nova Gorica where the
maternity hospital is situated, will have
their place of birth listed as Gorizia
as on their birth certificate. This was
another concern of soon-to-be Italian
parents which prevented them from
heading to Slovenia for childbirth. It
was therefore agreed that despite being
born in Slovenia, the listed place of birth
would be Italy.
Around a thousand babies are delivered at the hospital in Šempeter pri Gorici
every year. This figure is now expected to
jump significantly since some 300 babies
were delivered each year at the Gorizia
Maternity Hospital, which local Italian
authorities closed due to the relatively
low number of births.
Slovenian manuscript
auctioned for $1.9 million
London (STA) — A 15th century
manuscript that was acquired in the 18th
century by Baron Jozef Erberg Kalasanc
from Ljubljana and is considered an
important part of Slovenia’s cultural
heritage was sold at an auction in London
to an unknown buyer for $1.9 million in
mid-July.
The book, believed to have been written between 1430 and 1435 in Vienna for
liturgical use in the Patriarchy of Aquileia, was sold by the Christie’s auction
house as part of a collection acquired by
the Bright, Thompson and Yates families
from the start of the 1800s through the
1940s, according to media reports.
Presented as the “missal of Ludwig
of Teck, a previously unknown work by
the Master of the Prayerbook of Albrecht
V, Duke of Austria, and the only one in
private hands,” the manuscript was once
part of an extensive library collected by
Erberg Kalasanc (1771-1843). Kalasanc
was a Carniolan botanist, cultural historian, collector and patron of the arts.
Experts consider the book an important part of Slovenia’s cultural heritage
that unfortunately shares the fate of 99
percent of the country’s written heritage
from the Medieval period. “We have
160 manuscripts in Slovenia, while we
presently know of about 600 manuscripts
abroad. Each year, a few manuscripts
are sold that used to be in Slovenian
provenance, and then they disappear,” art
historian Nataša Golob of the Ljubljana
Faculty of Arts explained.
Golob said she had trouble understanding why Slovenia did not try to
acquire the manuscript, but the Cultural
Ministry explained that it only found
out about the auction two days prior
and decided not to participate because
of limited financial resources.
While Christie’s announced it expected to get between $835,000 and $1.34
million for the manuscript, this year the
ministry has approximately $337,000
available for the acquisition of pieces of
movable cultural heritage for museums
and galleries.
Ljubljana (STA) — The National
Museum assembled an exhibition to recognize the metal tower atop the country’s
highest peak, Triglav, in mid-July. The
central exhibit presents an exact replica
of the tower which was built in 1895 and
has since become a national symbol and
a popular landmark for many Slovenian
and foreign mountaineers.
“The team constructing the replica
tried to simulate the exact conditions
under which the original tower was constructed almost 120 years ago by priest
Jakob Aljaž, a trailblazer in the Julian
Alps,” the Ljubljana-based museum
wrote in an announcement of the event.
As part of the exhibition opening, the
show’s namesake documentary “Aljažev
stolp - Ta pleh ima dušo” (The Aljaž
Tower - This Metal Has Soul) will be
screened for the first time.
The metal tower stands atop the
9,400-foot high Triglav, which is scaled
by over 3,000 mountaineers every day
during peak season, according to information provided by the Slovenian
Mountaineering Association. The tower
and its immediate surroundings were
proclaimed a site of national cultural
importance in 1999, presenting a symbol
of national pride along with the country’s
highest peak.
“The National Museum exhibition
was designed to raise awareness of the
importance of the Aljaž Tower, which
has started to deteriorate due to exposure to extreme weather conditions.
The display also encourages plans to
preserve the Aljaž legacy, which is
undoubtedly a meaningful connection
among Slovenians, the museum added
in a press release.
Gap stores plan launch
in Slovenia this autumn
Ljubljana (STA) — Clothing retailer Gap has announced plans to open
its first stores in Slovenia this fall as part
of an expansion that will also see the
retailer open stores in Austria.
The popular clothing chain expects
to open three stores in Ljubljana as part
of its launch in Slovenia. Separate adult
and children’s clothing stores are planned
for the City Park shopping mall, while
another will open in the center of town.
The Gap franchise in Slovenia was
acquired by Magistrat International,
a distributor of several major clothing
brands throughout the country and operator of the Emporium department store.
Joan Baez returning
to Ljubljana in October
Ljubljana (STA) — Singer-songwriter Joan Baez is coming to Ljubljana
to perform at the Cankarjev dom Arts
Center on Oct. 13. Baez, a 73-year-old
folk artist and activist, performed in
Ljubljana seven years ago, when she
delighted the audience at Tivoli Arena.
“Baez represents great authority in
music with a powerful influence,” representatives from the Ljubljana-based
Dallas Records said about her.
Baez, who is known for her social
activism, marched alongside Martin
Luther King Jr., served as an inspiration
to Vaclav Havel in the fight against the
Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in
1968, and performed for the first Amnesty International tour as well as at the
legendary Woodstock festival in 1969.
Stanley Cup in Slovenia
for the second time
Jesenice (STA) — The NHL’s Stanley Cup found its way to Slovenia for the
second time in three years as NHL star
Anže Kopitar made use of the right to
keep the famous trophy for a day and
presented it to a packed hall in Jesenice.
Like the rest of his teammates, Kopitar, who became a two-time NHL champion with the Los Angeles Kings, was
entitled to the trophy for a day. Kopitar
presented the cup to more than 3,000
Slovenian hockey fans in Jesenice, a town
with a long ice-hockey tradition that is
close to his hometown of Hrušice, where
he celebrated his first title two years ago.
Kopitar also took the trophy to the island
on Lake Bled, as well as to Golica hill.

Več kot polovica Slovencev zelenjavo prideluje sama
HEADLINE: More than half of
Slovenians are growing their own
vegetables
TOPIC: According to the results of
research conducted by the GfK Company, at present in Slovenia, 40 percent
of all customers prefer to buy organic
products. Among them, seven percent
regularly purchase organic items, while
33 percent buy organic items along with
other products. More than half of Slovenian households are growing their own
vegetables, most of the time to ensure
better quality and to save some money.
V Sloveniji je trenutno 40 odstotkov
vseh kupcev, ki kupujejo eko proizvode.
Med njimi se jih sedem odstotkov redno
odloča zanje, medtem ko jih 33 odstotkov
kupuje skupaj z drugimi izdelki, kažejo
rezultati raziskave družbe GfK Slovenija.
Več kot polovica gospodinjstev sama
prideluje zelenjavo, večina zaradi zagotavljanja višje kakovosti.
Kot ugotavljajo v GfK Slovenija, se
za eko izdelke odloča vedno večji delež
prebivalstva. Še vedno sicer obstaja 60
odstotkov ljudi, ki tovrstnih izdelkov ne
kupujejo. Od teh jih okoli 40 odstotkov
pozna, ampak jih nikoli ne kupi, 20 odstotkov pa jih sploh ne pozna.
Zanimiv je tudi podatek, da več kot
polovica slovenskih gospodinjstev sama
prideluje zelenjavo. Polovica pridelovalcev trdi, da je glavni razlog za lastno
pridelavo zelenjave zagotavljanje višje
kakovosti hrane, medtem ko se tretjina
z vrtičkarstvom ukvarja zato, ker jim to
predstavlja prihranek denarja.
Kar 50 odstotkov slovenskih gospodinjstev je začelo samo proizvajati hrano,
hkrati pa jih še 20 odstotkov od tistih,
ki je ne pridelujejo sami, pridobiva od
sorodnikov in kmetij.

HEADLINE: Russian
women vocals for the beginning of Castle Evenings
TOPIC: A vocal group
from Russia, the Veroneška
Girls, opened the performances at Ribnica Castle for
the Grajski Večeri (Castle
Evenings), the largest regional festival from Ljubljana to
the Kolpa, held during the
months of July and August.
In only seven years the Grajski Večeri, organized by the
Ribnica Tourist Association,
has become recognized and
well attended; last year,
10,000 visitors attended eight
free events. “We know that
our festival can’t be as big
as the Ljubljana Festival or
Lent, but here in Ribnica we
can offer a good program,”
said festival manager Marko
Modrej. With a program
ranging from classical music to Dalmatian music and
stand-up comedy, the festival
is intended for all generations.
Z Veroneškimi dekleti,
vokalno zasedbo iz Rusije, so
se v Ribniškem gradu začeli
Grajski večeri, največji regijski
festival od Ljubljane do Kolpe,
ki poteka julija in avgusta. V
sedmih letih, odkar jih organizira Turistično društvo Ribnica, so Grajski večeri postali
prepoznavni in dobro obiskani;
lani so, denimo, imeli na osmih
brezplačnih dogodkih 10.000
obiskovalcev. “Vemo, da ne
morejo postati tako velik festival, kot sta Festival Ljubljana
ali Lent, vendar tudi v Ribnici
lahko kljub temu ponudimo
dober program,” pravi Marko
Modrej, vodja festivala, ki je
namenjen vsem generacijam,
saj ima v programu od klasične
do dalmatinske glasbe in
stand-up komedije. Proračun
Grajskih večerov pa je 20.000
evrov.

S “hop-on hop-off” še drugam na Gorenjsko
HEADLINE: With “hop-on hop-off”
to other places in Gorenjsko
TOPIC: The “hop-on hop-off ”
bus transportation system, which was
introduced in Radovljica last year to
give tourists the opportunity to visit
different places, will be expanded to
Bled, Bohinj and Pokljuka this year.
With the purchase of a $7 daily ticket,
tourists can ride to the Avseniks Gallery
in Begunje or to the smith’s in Kropa,
they can visit all points of interest and
then, by taking the next bus, they can
go to the next point. Morana Polovič, a
representative from Radovljica Tourism, said that the response from last
year’s pilot project was extremely good,
and for that reason they are expanding
and upgrading the program this year.
Avtobusne prevoze po sistemu “hopon hop-off”, ki so jih lani uvedli v
Radovljici in turistom omogočili ogled
različnih znamenitosti v občini, bodo letos
razširili še na Bled, Bohinj in Pokljuko. Z
dnevno vozovnico za pet evrov se bodo
turisti lahko peljali denimo do Avsenikove
galerije v Begunjah ali kovaške Krope, si
znamenitosti ogledali in se nato z naslednjim avtobusom odpeljali do naslednje
točke. Odziv na lanski pilotni projekt je
bil zelo dober, je dejala Morana Polovič
s Turizma Radovljica, zato ga letos širijo
in nadgrajujejo.
Klemen Langus, direktor Turizma Bohinj, pravi, da se bodo zdaj, ko je alternativa
osebnemu prometu zagotovljena, usmerili
predvsem na ozaveščanje o pomenu rabe
javnih prevoznih sredstev. Avtobus bo
konec tedna vozil tudi na Pokljuko, kjer
bodo tako poleti po 23 letih spet dobili
redno avtobusno povezavo. Tako bodo
po besedah Martina Šolarja iz Uprave
Triglevskega narodnega parka zmanjšali
okoljske obremenitve in uresničevali
trajnostno mobilnost na območju TNP.

Rekreacijsko pot v zaledju Kopra obnovili le s prostovoljnim delom
HEADLINE: The recreation path in Koper’s hinterland has been renovated
with volunteer work
TOPIC: At the suggestion
of the Rotunda Center, an
improvement to the Path For
Health between Vangelsko
Lake, Marezige and Vangenel in Koper’s hinterland is
almost complete. Interestingly, no one donated even a
euro toward the renovation
of the path; the partners
invested only their participa-
tion and goodwill.
The Rotunda Center took
over the coordination of the
project and found volunteer
partners. Students from the
Koper Technical School
made new boards and painted the posts, businessman Edi
Koren from Čentjur drew a
new map, and members of the
Istria branch of the Association for Health and Heart of
Slovenia cut the grass along
the path and trimmed the
branches that were obstruct-
ing the path.
Even though it takes
three hours, the walk on the
path – which leads past the
remnants of the mill and lake,
and through the vineyards
and olive plantations – is not
physically demanding, but it
does bring new opportunities
for recreation and socializing.
Na pobudo Središča Rotunda v teh dneh končujejo
ureditev Poti za srce med Vanganelskim jezerom, Marezi-
gami in Vanganelom v zaledju
Kopra. Posebnost projekta je,
da za obnovo poti nihče ni
prispeval niti evra, partnerji so
vložili le svoje sodelovanje in
dobro voljo.
Zamisel o obnovi poti pot je bila zaraščena, tabla,
ki označuje njen potek, pa
zbledela in rjasta - je rezultat
posveta o lokalnih partnerstvih, ki je bil marca v Središču
Rotunda. Dogodek je bil
namenjen pregledu potreb in
identificiranju izzivov, ki bi
jih lahko s skupnimi močmi
uresničili, so sporočili iz koprskega Središča Rotunda.
V Mestni občini Koper
so se na njihovo pobudo pri
obnovi povezali vzgoja in
izobraževanje, podjetništvo,
lokalne oblasti ter nevladni
sektor. V Središču Rotunda
so prevzeli koordinacijo in v
lokalnem okolju poiskali partnerje. Dijaki Srednje tehniške
šole Koper so naredili novo
tablo ter zbrusili in pobarvali
stebre, podjetnik Edi Koren iz
Čenturja je brezplačno narisal
zemljevid in grafično opremil
tablo, člani istrske podružnice
Društva za zdravje srca in ožilja
Slovenije pa so pokosili travo
ob poti ter posekali veje, ki so
ovirale hojo.
Čeprav traja tri ure, sprehod
po poti, ki vodi mimo ostankov
mlina, jezera, izvira vode, slapa, med vinogradi in oljčnimi
nasadi, ni fizično zahteven,
prinaša pa tudi novo možnost
za rekreacijo ter druženje.

Marelic je bilo dovolj tudi za marmelado
HEADLINE: There were plenty
of apricots also for the jam
TOPIC: The apricots didn’t
grow well this year in the Vipava
area, but there were enough that
housewives were able to prepare
delicious desserts, jams and juice
for their annual apricot holiday.
This year’s apricot crop wasn’t
the best, particularly in the Upper
Vipava Valley which is the most
suitable for growing apricots,
mainly due to the mild winter and
bad weather during the blossoming season. Some 78 percent of all
Slovenian apricots are grown in
the Primorsko region. The major-
ity of the plantations are located
in Goriška Brda; in the Vipava
Valley there are only 20 acres of
apricot plantations, and the rest
are grown in Goriško, the Karst
and Slovenian Istria.

in v slovenski Istri.
Povpraševanje po tem domačem
sadju je precej večje od pridelave, je
povedal Kodrič. Marelice dosegajo
priložnosti v kmetijstvu in predelavi
kmetijskih pridelkov, s pridom predelajo v različne marmelade in sokove
in ponudijo na trgu.
Kljub vsemu pa je med sadjarji le
malo takih, ki se odločajo za pridelavo
marelic. Le malo je namreč takih leg,
na katerih marelice dobro uspevajo. V
zadnjih letih je tudi veliko različnih
bolezni, ki vsako leto prizadenejo med
deset in 15 odstotkov vseh mareličnih
dreves, zato je potrebno sadovnjake
nenehno dosajati z novimi.
Pridelovalci marelic iz Vipavske
doline in KGZS Zavod Nova Gorica
so letos že tretjič zapored pripravili
praznik marelic, ki je predvsem
strokovno srečanje pridelovalcev s
kmetijskimi strokovnjaki. Tokrat so
si ga zamislili predvsem kot sprehod
po nasadih marelic in strokovno
svetovanje pri tehnologiji pridelave
marelic.
Pripravili pa so tudi razstavo
različnih sort marelic in pridelkov iz
njih, degustacijo sadja ter kosilo iz
sezonskih jedi z marelicami.
PRIMORSKE NOVICE
Osvežitev poletnega krožnika
HEADLINE: Refreshement of the summer plate
TOPIC: Certainly, everybody knows the eggplant as
a tasty and refreshing summer food.
The eggplant, which received its name from its
egg-shape fruit, belongs to
the nightshade family, the
same family as tomatoes and
peppers. This dark purple
vegetable, which could also
be different colors depending
on the variety, originated in
India. It prefers warm water
or even heat.
The larger eggplant producing countries include
France, Italy, Spain, Turkey
and Greece. In many countries this vegetable is considered a healthy food, even
though it doesn’t contain a
lot of vitamins and minerals.
The raw fruit contains few
calories and an indigestible
solanin, which disintegrates
only at high temperatures,
so the eggplant always has
to be cooked.
Gotovo vsi poznate jajčevce
kot okusno in svežo poletno
hrano, saj so čedalje bolj priljubljeni tudi v Sloveniji.
Jajčevec, ime je dobil po
jajčastih plodovih, sodi tako
kot paradižnik in paprika v
družino razhudnikov. Plodovom na Primorskem pravijo
melancani. Temno vijoličasta
zelenjadnica, ki je sicer lahko tudi drugih barv oziroma
bolje rečeno sort, izvira iz
Indije. Rada ima toploto,
če ne kar vročino. Gojene
jajčevce lahko kupujemo vse
leto, najbolj okusnejši pa so
naravno pridelani v poletnih
mesecih, ko je njihova sezona
na vrhuncu.
Velike pridelovalke
jajčevcev so Francija, Italija,
Španija, Turčija in Grčija.
V številnih deželah veljajo
sadeži, katerih meso je svetlo
zelene barve, za zdravilne,
čeprav vsebnost vitamiov in
mineralov ni kdo ve kolikšna.
Zato pa so v njih vitamin B,
niacin, folna kislina in kalij.
Lesketajoča se vijoličasta lupina zdravega in zrelega jajčevca
vsebuje barvilo nasuin, ki je
močan antioksidant. Poleg
tega naj bi sadeži vsebovali
učinkovine, ki nase vežejo
holesterol in ga znižujejo v
krvi, urejale prebavo, grenčine
spodbujajo delovanje jeter in
izloščanje žolčnika ter prebavo
maščob. Surovi sadeži imajo
malo kalorij in vsebujejo neprabavljivi solanin, ki razpade
šele pri visokih temperaturah,
zato jih moramo vedno skuhati.
Najokusnejši so srednje
veliki plodovi, ki se ob pritisku s prstom malenkost
vdrejo. Pred pripravo jih ni
treba nujno olupiti, če so sveži.
Pomembno pa je, da narezane
rezine posolimo in počakamo,
da spustijo tekočino. Ožamemo
jih, tako ne bodo grenki, kar se
rado zgodi pri starih plodovih
oziroma manj kakovostnih sortah. Jajčevci so nepogrešljivi
v vegetarijanski kuhinji in
pri dietah, zaradi osvežilnega
okusa so poleti prava delikatesa
in še posebno priljubljeni v
obmorskih deželah.

We hope you’ll come and enjoy
yourself! Bob Klemen’s Indy

homemade wine from Lenny
and Mary Shaw, and spirits
from Jack and Mary Pleterski.
Ruth and George Benedict, Bill
Tomazin, and Jeannette Humphrey will serve as the Lodge
603 hosts for the weekend.
Nine of us from Lodge 603
attended Slovenefest at the
SNPJ Recreation Center in
July, and we sure had a good
time. We enjoyed the music
throughout the weekend, and
seeing so many of you is always a real plus. Before we left
for Pennsylvania, Lodge 603
President Pauline Lockwood
treated us to a Slovenian toast
send-off and made us some
sandwiches for the trip. We
drove straight through from
Samsula all the way to the Borough of SNPJ, and on Monday
we drove back. It was a long
ride, but we had a lot of fun too.
Ron Luznar drove up to the
Recreation Center and stayed
with his longtime friend, Bob
Turcola. Mary and Jack Pleterski drove over from their summer home in Hillsville, Va., to
attend Slovenefest on Saturday.
We stayed in Cabin 9, which
was in good working order as
always. We called ahead to
have our cabin opened since
we arrived in the wee hours
of Friday morning, but first we
had a welcome drink of hruška
with Ann and Tony Klepec.
It was good to see Bea
Cvetas, a fellow member of
Lodge 603. She and her family
sponsored the entertainment
in the International Pavilion
for the weekend. Bea and her
pal Ann Evanish spent a great
deal of time together during the
weekend. Bea’s late husband
Joe and their family donated
the lakeside pavilion at the
Recreation Center a few years
ago, and many weddings are
held there throughout the year.
We also stopped by the
SNPJ Home Office table each
day to talk with those working
to promote our Society.
Lodge 603 members have
been busy. We celebrated Independence Day with a covered
dish dinner, followed by a real
bang of a fireworks display.
Lodge President Pauline Lockwood took care of the fireworks
purchase. Lighting the display
was Candido Ramirez. Ruth
and George Benedict took care
of the meal, and the libations
were provided by the Lodge.
Youth Circle 57 members
enjoyed several games of volleyball, and some of the adults
enjoyed playing balina. We
have planned a Monday, Sept.
1, Labor Day fish fry starting
at noon. Those attending are
asked to bring a covered dish
or two to share.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Attending an SNPJ Young Adult Conference a valuable experience
Recently I attended the SNPJ Young
Adult Conference. After winning an SNPJ
Academic Scholarship in 2013, it was
required that I attend a conference. At first
I was a bit hesitant about the experience.
I had never attended an SNPJ youth or
young adult event so I had no idea what
to expect, but the conference turned out
to be very worthwhile!
The other delegates and I got to serve
people in a few communities. We spent
time cleaning the highway around the SNPJ
Recreation Center, which was a fun time
to bond with fellow SNPJ members that
were my age. Another way we were able to
reach out was with our involvement in The
Jared Box Project (www.thejaredbox.com).
If you’re Lodge was one of the Lodges
that provided us with so many donations,
please accept my heartfelt thank-you! We
were able to make over 120 boxes of gifts

Lodge 33 Secretary
AMBRIDGE, Pa. — Greetings! I hope
this finds you well and enjoying your
summer sun and fun.
Another Slovenefest is now just a
memory to savor until next year. It sure
was an invigorating and fraternal weekend
to gather with friends, family, acquaintances, members and hopeful members
to share some ethnic culture, food and
music. The weather was perfect until a
little burst of dež on Sunday, but we kept
on visiting right through it all. Here’s to
all the attendees who braved the clouds
for a good polka or two.
It was also very nice to have my family
from California join us for the weekend.
for kids with terminal illnesses, many of
whom are facing cancer diagnoses.
With the help of an SNPJ Scholarship, I
am pursuing a career as a pediatric oncologist. My dedication to helping kids with
cancer started years ago when I started
Tying Up Cancer (tyingupcancer.weebly.
com), a not-for-profit that raises money
for pediatric cancer research by making
and selling friendship bracelets. I was so
excited to be involved with something I’m
very passionate about at the Young Adult
Conference. I was also so blessed to have
the chance to deliver some of the Jared
Boxes to the kids in the hospital.
Overall, much good came out of the
Young Adult Conference and I’m so
glad I got to see what SNPJ has to offer
kids my age. Thank you to all of those
that helped in some way with The Jared
Box Project, and thank you to the SNPJ
Scholarship Committee for choosing me
and introducing me to some of the great
things about SNPJ!
My brother Joe was thrilled to get some
time on the accordion keys on Sunday.
Many thanks to the Valencic friends and
group for providing him that pleasure!
Best wishes to the new Miss SNPJ,
Nicole Vehar of Strabane, Pa., Lodge 138.
Thanks to her predecessor, Ashley Russ
of Euclid, Ohio, Lodge 158, for representing the Society in a positive manner. It’s
evident that these girls both have SNPJ and
Slovenian love in their hearts. Congratulations to both of you, and keep on smiling;
you bring us much pride as our queens.
My condolences to the family of Lodge
713 Secretary/Treasurer Gloria Hrovat. I
have fond memories of traveling to Slovenia with her and sharing many laughs
along the way. May her legacy live on; she
touched many lives with her joyful personality and her love. She will be missed.
The SNPJ National Convention is on
the way, and I’m looking forward to being
part of it as we work to move our Society
into the future. May it be successful and
may the camaraderie of our members shine
with fraternalism. Here’s to another four
years of keeping our ancestry alive. Safe
travels to all the delegates!
Thanks to Jerome and Robbie Petukauskas for representing Lodge 33 at the
SNPJ TEL Workshop. They had a great
weekend and came home with only one
complaint: it wasn’t long enough! This
group enjoyed seeing one another from
near and far, wearing their favorite polka
band T-shirts, and discussing the trailers
they plan to purchase as adults. I’m so
glad SNPJ is a permanent part of their
lives, and hopefully these teens will be
friends for life... because isn’t that what
it’s all about?
As summer moves onward and forward,
I wish each of you a restful and sunny
August. How quickly it comes and goes!
Let’s not discuss what the end of summer
brings.
I hope to see many of you at the SNPJ
Recreation Center to celebrate all of the
August activities. It’s an awesome home
away from home, and they sure have
activities galore for every age group.
Come and relish the beauty of our “little
Slovenia.”
Until next time, stay healthy and happy.
Remember that each day is a gift... that’s
why it’s called the present.

Loyalites supporting the SNPJ Farm in its 75th year
by GINA VOLPE
Lodge 158 Treasurer
EUCLID, Ohio — There
isn’t much to report from the
Loyalites Lodge this month,
but Lodge members have had
some major accomplishments
and we have some things to
look forward to.
Our most recent meeting
was held on July 10. We would
like to remind everyone that
all are welcome to attend the
meetings. We would love to
see some new faces and maybe
get some new ideas from fresh
minds.
The Loyalites congratulate
Colleen Frank who graduated
from the Ohio State University
in May. Next, whether they’re
late or right on time, you can
always say happy birthday!
Our birthday celebrants include Megan Hopkins on
June 30; Janet Tordalino in
July; and Fran Gaudio, Tom
Zivkovich, Billy Frank, Karen
O’Donnell and Tim O’Donnell
Jr. in August. We also wish a
happy anniversary to Karen
and Steve Godic.
Fred and Pat Nevar had an
enjoyable trip to Laughlin,
Nev. They openly admit to
staying indoors the whole time
because the temperature was
110° every day.
It’s time to talk about the
SNPJ Farm in Kirtland, Ohio,
once again. By now, you should
have heard about the “Raise the
Roof Fund” which was created
to try to make repairs at the
Farm, particularly to replace
the roof. To get people even
more involved and interested,
the Federation of Slovenian
Homes is hosting a reverse
raffle specifically to raise
money for the SNPJ Farm.
The reverse raffle will be
held Saturday, Sept. 20, at the
Farm. More information will
follow, but for now save the
date and let’s raise this roof!
Tickets are on sale for $50
and include appetizers, dinner,
and a $1,500 main board with
another $500 in prizes. En-
tertainment will feature Mike
Wojtila and the Party of Three.
For ticket information contact
Gina Volpe at (440) 205-1618.
Finally, the Loyalites would
like to officially congratulate
Nicole Vehar, a member of
Strabane, Pa., Lodge 138, on
being crowned Miss SNPJ
2015. We all want to show our
love and support, and we know
that she will represent SNPJ
phenomenally. We wish her
the best on her journey over
the next year; all of us here at
Lodge 158 know she will do a
great job.
As always, our thoughts
and prayers are with all of our
ailing members.
Summer fun continues at the SNPJ Heritage Center
HERITAGE CENTER
FROM PAGE 1
where the Western Pa. Button
Box Club will be playing all
your favorite tunes from 8 until
10:30 p.m.
The fraternal activities continue the next day with music in
the upper pavilion starting at 3
p.m. as the Mansfield 5, the Don
Wojtila Orchestra and the Eddie Rodick Orchestra perform
until midnight. Admission is
free, so bring your family and
friends! We need you to support
all the activities at the SNPJ
Recreation Center.
Slovenefest 2014 is over,
and the Heritage Center had
a wonderful turnout Friday
and Saturday. In fact, it was
one of our largest crowds in
about seven years. We probably would have had a nice
turnout on Sunday as well if
the weather forecasters weren’t
predicting a big thunderstorm
during the day. Unfortunately
they were right, and the storm
hit us at about 4 p.m. Thank
goodness everyone ran for
cover until the storm subsided
and no one was injured.
It was so nice having the
Rodick and Wojtila orchestras return to the stage this
year. They always bring out
the younger crowd, and it’s
wonderful to feel the energy
as they dance and have fun. If
you were in the tent for the last
set on either night, you know
what I’m talking about. As I
get older and realize I can’t
keep up with all that energy,
it warms my heart to see the
20- and 30-year-olds digging
the polkas as they go-go-go
like the Energizer Bunny... like
I used to!
Of course, I didn’t let down
my Slovenian heritage. I adjourned to the Gostilna after
midnight on both nights to
listen to the really young guys –
Brian O’Boyle, Johnny Koenig
and Garrett Tatano – play their
accordions. Yes, Slovenefest
will survive for years to come.
I must also mention some
of the older folks who attended Slovenefest this year.
Bea Cvetas (603) flew in from
Florida and enjoyed her short
stay in the SNPJ Trailer Court.
It was nice chatting with you,
Bea. Tony Bole (138), who
worked really hard setting up
many Slovenefests in the past,
was also in attendance. At the
gate I met the Tomsics (218),
who came in from Colorado,
and Delores Spelich (2) who
traveled from Illinois with the
Riglers. We didn’t get to chat,
but I’m glad Delores made
the trip.
After checking the map in
the Heritage Center, I learned
that we had visitors from across
the United States. Hello to the
crew from Samsula, Fla., and
thanks for making the trip to
Slovenefest! To Frank Rote,
and Phyllis and Eric Wood
from California, so nice to see
you, as always, every summer.
Finally, congratulations to
newly crowned Miss SNPJ
2015 Nicole Vehar (138). I met
Nicole at Youth Roundup this
year as she was serving as a
counselor. Nicole is a bright,
well-spoken young lady and
has a very outgoing personality.
As a reminder, the SNPJ
Slovenian Heritage Center is
open Saturdays from 1 to 5
p.m. You’ll want to check out
our new T-shirt designs as
there aren’t too many left. And
our supply of cookies, noodles
and other sought after items is
dwindling as the season will
be coming to a close at the end
September. Be sure to buy your
items now since we won’t be
replenishing this season.

Centennial celebration
for an outlived member
GREENSBURG, Pa.
— Sis. Jean Kristan,
an outlived member
of SNPJ Lodge 223,
celebrated her 100th
birthday on June 15. A
party was held in her
honor with 65 friends
and family members
in attendance.
Sis. Kristan is a lifelong member of Lodge
223 in Greensburg,
having outlived her
policy in January 2010.
She married Charles Sis. JEAN KRISTAN celebrated

members of the Lodge.
Charles passed away in 1985.
Jean is the proud mother of two sons, Chuck and Ken,
grandmother of four and great-grandmother of five. She
currently resides at St. Anne Home in Greensburg.
On behalf of Lodge 223 and the Slovene National Benefit
Society, we wish Sis. Kristan a very happy 100th birthday.
A 96th celebration
for Lodge 6 member
SYGAN, Pa. — Do
you know this classy
Slovenian lady who is
still swinging at 96?
Her name is Sis. Pauline Sakely and she
celebrated her 96th
birthday July 3. Surely
you have seen Pauline
at a dance somewhere
along the way. Perhaps
you’ve danced with her,
or maybe you are one
of her many cherished
friends.

enrolled her in the SNPJ
in 1918. In fact, she was an SNPJ member at the time of
her baptism in Cecil, Pa. Long before Pauline knew the
blessing and loyalty of her Slovenian heritage, her father
helped define her path.
Pauline and her husband Tony attended a polka dance on
their first date, and went on to hone their dancing skills at
the Herminie and Yukon ballrooms for 57 years after their
marriage. They considered it an honor to collect money at
the door, tend bar, sell tickets or work in the kitchen, all
while laughing and dancing with friends.
In 1986, five polka bands – Palombi, Grkman, Tady,
Yankovic and Sam Pugliano – graciously entertained for
their 50th anniversary party. Tony and Pauline were named
“Polka Ambassadors” in 1989, a title they took seriously.
They made it their business to invite, greet, encourage and
dance with everyone. They also wrote letters to five radio
stations every week to send birthday and anniversary wishes
to hundreds of friends.
Sis. Sakely lost Tony in 2003. Just before his passing,
the Joe Grkman Orchestra made a personal visit to their
home to play music for Tony. How often do you hear of
such kindness? Pauline’s faith and her Slovenian friends
kept her dancing. In fact, Dick Tady wrote the polka titled
“Polka Hug” just for her.
Pauline delights in sharing wonderful stories about her
friends, musicians, dances, picnics and jam sessions. She
remembers every name and every face as if it were yesterday.
She sends her heartfelt appreciation to the SNPJ, Prosveta
and the various clubs that provide opportunities for people
to come together and forget the ups and down of life for a
few hours, a day or a weekend.
Sis. Sakely also sends love, hugs and smiles to her many
precious friends who continue to dance, laugh and share
life with her and one another.

Members celebrating 50, 60, 70 and 80 years with the Slovene National Benefit Society
W
by JOSEPH C. EVANISH
SNPJ National President
e of the SNPJ belong to an organization
that has a very extraordinary and diverse
membership. Our members range in age
from newborn to 100-plus years. They
come from many different parts of the United States,
have a wide variety of ideas and have many different
backgrounds. But they all have something in common –
their loyalty and love of SNPJ.
It is through our older members, the backbone of our
Society, that our younger members have learned and will
continue to learn the meaning of fraternalism. They have
guided our Society through the good times and the trying times with one common goal... unity and harmony
within the SNPJ.
Every year, more and more of these respected SNPJ
elders reach the 50-, 60-, 70- and astronomical 80-year
milestone of membership in the Slovene National Benefit
Society. It is our privilege to honor some of this elite
group of elders.
In acknowledging our elder members, we show our
respect for these honorees by offering our thanks and
appreciation for the loyalty they have shown the Society
• Sis. DOROTHY LEKAN was
recognized by Euclid, Ohio, Lodge
158 and the Slovene National
Benefit Society for her 70 years
of membership. Sis. Lekan writes:
“Thank you for remembering
me and making me even prouder
to be an SNPJ member. I turned 88
on May 16, and the SNPJ blanket
was the perfect birthday present.
This gift reaffirms how thoughtful
Slovenians are. I’ll snuggle in the
blanket and be proud to be a Slovenian, as I always have.
“I’m originally from Cleveland,
the heart of Ohio’s Slovenian
community. I’ve visited SNPJ
Lodges in California and Utah,
but unfortunately we have none in
Nevada. I enjoy receiving PROSVETA as it keeps me in touch with
the Society.”

• In honor of her 50th membership anniversary, Sis. CAROL
GALAYDA was recognized by
the Slovene National Benefit
Society and Tire Hill, Pa., Lodge
289. Sis. Galayda writes:
“What a pleasant surprise!
Thank you very much for the
wallet, pin and generous check.
I can remember when my father
proudly received his 50-year
membership recognition. My six
siblings and I are all members of
the Society thanks to my father,
who passed away in 2001.
“My grandparents came to this
country from Cerknica, Slovenia,
a place I have visited several
times as my family still has relatives there. I am very proud of my
heritage and I thank the Society
for the thoughtful gifts.”

• St. Michael, Pa., Lodge 190 and
the Slovene National Benefit Society honored Sis. RUTH ROBERTS
for attaining 70 years of membership. Sis. Roberts writes:

for so many years. In a small way we can etch their
names into the archives of the SNPJ even more through
PROSVETA.
Upon reaching the 50-year milestone, the Executive
Committee forwards a certificate of recognition. Sixty-year
members receive a diamond-studded gold pin; 70-year
members receive an embroidered fleece blanket and 80year members receive an SNPJ custom blanket.
We ask our elite elders, once they have received their
awards from the Society, to submit a short report on their
past and present life style which includes Lodge affiliation,
hobbies and other information which might be of interest
to PROSVETA readers.
We welcome letters from all of our fraternal honorees.
Sometimes, over the years, a member transfers to another
Lodge out of state. This short report enables us to pass
along addresses so that longtime acquaintances can keep
in touch or renew old friendships which have gone astray.
Our congratulations to all who have reached these
honored milestones. It is said that our future is in the
young, but without our elite elders the traditions and
heritage of the SNPJ would not be able to grow and our
young would not learn the true meaning of unity, harmony
and fraternalism.
