(CMT Inc.) were retained by N-J Excavating to carry out a geotechnical investigation on Sandy Hills Drive in the Township of Wo olwi eh. It is understood that N -J Excavating is proposing to begin exporting sand and gravel from the existing pit located at 777 Sandy Hills Drive in the Township of Woolwich. A requirement of the Township of Woolwich was to investigate the existing road structure and determine the thickness of the granular base/subbase. Prior to conducting the geotechnical investigation; locates were undertaken under the supervision ofN-J Excavating to ensure that existing utilities would not be damaged. Three (3) boreholes were advanced utilizing a Geoprobe 6620DT drillrig operated by CMT Engineering Inc. Please refer to the attached borehole location plan for the locations of the boreholes. Boreholes 1 and 3 were advanced west of the existing driveway into the pit. The stratigraphy in Borehole 1 comprised approximately 0.3 m (12") of Granular 'A' overlying native sand with some gravel. Borehole 3 comprised approximately 0.15 m (6") of Granular 'A' overlying native sand with some gravel. Sand and gravel was encountered at a depth of 1.8 m in Borehole 3. The free-draining nature of native sand with some gravel, combined with the 0.15 to 0.30 m (6" to 12") of Granular 'A', should provide a satisfactory base to accommodate the anticipated truck traffic in the area of Boreholes 1 and 3. Regular maintenance (grading) will be required to maintain a suitable driving surface. C.MT Engineering Inc. March 6, 2008 Page 2 08-042.ROI Borehole 2 was advanced on the hill to the east of the existing driveway into the pit area. The stratigraphy in Borehole 2 comprised approximately 0.15 m (6") of Granular 'A' overlying 0.35 m (14") of sand and gravel. Underlying the sand and gravel was a 50 mm (2") thick layer of topsoil, then native silty sand. The silty sand was in a wet state (moisture content of 16.5%). Sand and gravel was encountered at a depth of 1.8 m in Borehole 2. It is presumed that the topsoil layer has been compressed by the surface granulars and vehicle traffic. The presence of topsoil can reduce the drainage characteristics of the road. Between the presence of topsoil, the reduced drainage and the underlying silty sand in a wet state, it would be anticipated that frost heaving and frost boils would be experienced in this area during the winter and spring conditions. It should be noted that frozen conditions were encountered to depth of approximately 0.6 m (2.0 ft) in all three boreholes. The frozen conditions make it difficult to accurately discern between the Granular 'A' base and the underlying soils.
