Celebrating leadership: Defining moments
Defining moments
A sphere of influence
Talent, passion and conviction...
Each May, I look forward to
our Woman of the Year event—
the first of our two flagship
events of the year—for a number of reasons. Yes, it’s exciting
to see the impact of the HBA
reflected in 2,200 healthcare
executives filling the largest ballroom in New York City. Yes, it’s
wonderful to acknowledge the
growing number of Corporate
Partners and other companies
that support this event through
their generous sponsorship,
Laurie Cooke
which helps us continue to fuel
our pipeline in pursuit of our mission and vision. And yes, it’s
wonderful to reconnect with so many women of influence, our
previous Women of the Year, past presidents and other HBA
leaders.
In addition to these remarkable highlights, I am always
moved by the talent, passion and conviction of our honorees
who are committed to furthering the HBA’s mission today and
fueling our aspirations for the future. This year is no different. Our nearly 100 Rising Stars and Luminaries—many of
whom I have had the privilege to meet at some of the HBA’s
400-plus chapter events—are truly blazing a path for the next
generation of leaders. Our Honorable Mentor, Pfizer’s Stuart
Sowder, who clearly epitomizes what this honor denotes, represents an organization that is comprised of more than 72%
women and leads a team that is 60% women. Our STAR,
Carol Wells, who is being honored for being an outstanding
HBA volunteer, is a role model to not only her Genentech
colleagues and the HBA’s San Francisco chapter, but to our
industry as a whole. Her generosity of spirit and willingness
to give back have had a ripple effect throughout the industry.
Our 2015 WOTY’s story is one of remarkable fortitude,
inspiration and celebration. McNeil Consumer Health’s
Denice Torres is a tour de force, self-admittedly someone who
was born wired for experience, challenges and possibilities; her
personal story will resonate with me for years to come.
These are just a few of the extraordinary leaders whose
impact moves us every day. And just as their influence will continue to shape who we are—we all have the power to create
those defining moments for others. I encourage you to think
about the defining moments we share at WOTY and how you
can create your own sphere of influence.

admire, to emulate and be inspired by. Our Honorable
Mentor is lauded for helping women achieve their career
potential via mentoring. The STAR is an HBA volunteer
who has given of herself to help the HBA achieve its
mission to further the advancement and impact of
women in healthcare worldwide. HBA Corporate Partners
designate 100 Rising Stars and Luminaries, each a woman
to admire for her accomplishments.
Thank you for joining us this May in person at our event

Celebrating leadership: Influence and impact
A roadmap
to influence and impact in healthcare
Industry experts discuss how to use the power
of influence to create a meaningful impact.
T
he rapid and ongoing changes in nearly every aspect of
healthcare, from how care is delivered to how it is paid
for, continue to shake up old models and open the door
for influence from new areas.
“This is a prime time, to me the most opportune time,
for women to lead through change,” says Patricia Maryland,
DrPH, president, healthcare operations and chief operating
officer of Ascension Health and a 2014 HBA Woman of the
Year (WOTY). “There’s a tendency for women to be more
collaborative, and when I think about the changes in the
healthcare industry and what we’re seeing throughout this
country, new relationships and partnerships are necessary.”
At the same time, organizations across healthcare continue
to shift from traditional top-down hierarchies toward more
matrixed, team-based models that encourage collaboration,
nimbleness and a diversity of opinion. As Susan Tardanico
puts it in her in ForbesWoman article on how to increase
your influence, we’re moving from a business world in which
“the person with the power has the influence” toward one in
which “the person with the influence has the power.”
So how do you become a “person with influence?” We interviewed five influential women: four HBA WOTYs and the
2015 WOTY committee chair to find out. Based on their insights, we’ve put together a roadmap to influence and impact.
Step 1: Establish credibility
Successful leaders and research agree: in order to have in-

opportunities are more complex
or outside of your comfort zone.

fluence, you must first have credibility. Dr. Maryland calls credibility foundational and says you must hold both yourself, and
others around you, accountable. “You should be able to define
and master your areas of expertise. And when you come into
a role, you have to really focus on performance excellence. You
have to be able to deliver and generate a proven track record
of results because having that history gains you the credibility
and the respect that you can work from,” she advises.
And it’s never too early to start. “Over time, it’s not that
you’re necessarily working on the biggest projects, proposing
some major shift or working on the most influential strategy,
but just that in everything you do, you’re consistent, you collaborate and you do it well. It’s building that track record so
when you have an idea to bring forth that will make a big impact, people will be more likely to listen,” says Jaime Marks
Corvino, manager of digital strategy at Novo Nordisk. “It’s
important to plant those seeds along the way.” Marks Corvino is also 2015 co-chair of HBA Flagship Events, including
WOTY and Annual Conference.
Step 2: Accept the difficult tasks
In a 2013 Harvard Business Review article titled “How
Experts Gain Influence,” which studied the competencies that
help functional leaders or groups increase their impact in their
organizations, researchers identified “trailblazing” as one of
four key competencies. The leaders we spoke to agree. When
asked how those in nonexecutive positions can gain influence,
Shideh Sedgh Bina, co-founder of Insigniam and a 2014
WOTY, says one way is to simply “step up to bat more frequently than other people, even if the opportunities are more
complex or outside of your comfort zone.”

Celebrating leadership: Influence and impact
Maryland adds that she always encourages women to embrace whatever opportunities are presented to them, especially
those difficult opportunities to manage through change and set
the strategic direction for their areas of influence.
Step 3: Accept yourself
Perhaps one of the most difficult things to accept for many
of us is ourselves. And yet, leaders say it’s critical to have what
is often called executive presence, loosely defined as the blend
of skills, personality and competencies that give the perception
of a leader and pave the way to having influence. In a Center
for Talent Innovation report on this topic, gravitas came out as
the core characteristic of executive presence—a characteristic
defined in part by exuding confidence and “grace under fire,”
acting decisively and “showing teeth,” and having integrity
and “speaking truth to power.”
For Denice Torres, co-lead of North America Consumer
and president of McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Johnson &
Johnson Consumer, and the 2015 WOTY, this gravitas comes
in large part from being happy with ourselves for who we are
and using the gifts we have. “It’s not just okay to be you,” she
says. “It’s essential to be you. If you turn into something you’re
not, you may get to the next level, you may get to the next goal,
but will you be happy? And I know if you’re not true to your
principles and your values, there’s no way to be happy. If you
lose that, you lose everything.”
Torres often advises women to leverage the strongest version of themselves in any situation. “As a woman, you’re wearing all these hats, and sometimes you’ve got to pull out a different hat for a different situation.” When she herself is faced
with having to find the confidence, or gravitas, to deal with
difficult business issues, she thinks of her fierce commitment
to ensuring the best for her daughter Sierra, who has cerebral
palsy, epilepsy, cognitive impairment and is nonverbal. She
asks herself, “How would I want my daughter to see me?” and
builds her own confidence by telling herself, “Sierra’s mom’s
got this.”
Step 4: Formulate and communicate your vision
In addition to knowing yourself, you must also know your
goals if you want to get people behind them. “There is no
substitute for a clear and compelling vision,” Torres says. “If
you want to make a difference, make sure you know what that
difference looks like.” Though that may sound simple, Torres
explains, it’s not. You must look inside and wrestle with all the
aspects of your vision so that you know what success looks and
feels like—in order to be able to make your vision and its success tangible to others.
Step 5: Get your stakeholders onboard
Research shows that getting the support of top management goes a long way in gaining influence in your organization. Dr. Annalisa Jenkins, CEO of Dimension Therapeutics
and a 2014 WOTY, agrees. “It is critical to ensure that you
have sponsors who will advocate for you and open doors and
unlock opportunities.”
But leaders also say it’s equally important to look beyond
your superiors. “I think it’s better that people don’t think in
terms of senior management,” Sedgh Bina says. “Rather, for

Celebrating leadership: Influence and impact
any decision, there are stakeholders who will be affected by
that decision and there are stakeholders who will make that
decision. Leaders need to develop the agility to speak to different perspectives and connect what they are proposing to the
different stakeholder groups, what’s in it for them, what’s going
to be required from them, and then request action.”
Step 6: Influence the next generation
Finally, all of the leaders we spoke to noted that influence
cannot end with your own impact. You must be willing to
mentor others to ensure that the next generation of leaders
will also be able to make a meaningful impact. Speaking of
the importance of mentors in her own career, Maryland says
it’s the confidence that her mentors had in her that allowed her
to take on difficult tasks and be an agent for change. “When
you’re looking at new and increasing responsibility that may
be a challenge and brings a lot of risk, having the sounding
board of your mentors is very important.”
Marks Corvino recalls her own recent experience of mentoring a colleague who is just a few years behind her in her
career track. “For me, it’s imagining the possibility of people
taking influence to mean not only am I going to gain influence
myself, but helping other women and men who are starting
on their career journey to learn how to make an impact, so
that we all become the best professionals we can be to get to
that ultimate goal of making a better healthcare landscape for
everyone.”
How the HBA helps bring influencers
together for maximum impact
The HBA offers numerous opportunities for professionals
to learn how to cultivate their own executive presence and to
increase their credibility in the industry through both knowledge-based learning at the more than 400 chapter events a
year and volunteer roles.
The HBA connects young leaders with the mentors they
need to build their confidence and take bold steps. And it gives
senior leaders the chance to broaden their impact beyond their
organizations.
“I have been deeply aware of the platform that being a
WOTY has provide me to share my voice of experience and
offer insights as a gift to the next generation of women leaders,” Jenkins says.
“The HBA is a convener of some pretty amazing women
and men in seats of influence who already—or will in the future—make an impact,” Marks Corvino says. “The association
makes an impact by bringing together people of influence from
different parts of the healthcare industry and helping us to organize and become stronger as individuals and as an industry.”
She concludes: “Imagine if we had women in seats of influence throughout the healthcare industry? What would that
mean? Just imagine the power of having women who have a
similar vision of influence—from all different sectors—come
together. Imagine the possibilities.”

Making an impact in 140 characters
The real value of Twitter is that it is just not
leveraged for talking; both individuals and
businesses can listen at scale to several
conversations at once.
For example, at Symplur, we recently surpassed more
than 800 million Tweets and 300 million Twitter profiles.
The HBA just surpassed 1.4 million impressions. What that
means, is that healthcare is not a late adopter to social
media.
Here’s how to resonate with followers in 140 characters:
• Design your tweets for strategic impact, for two-way
conversation where there is a mutual opportunity
for connecting and the sharing of relevant and
personalized content.
• Turn followers into advocates by being consistent and
authentic when engaging with your community; in
other words, stop throwing out broadcast messages.
• Use Twitter as a search platform, a place to ask
questions and post links, and a forum to help you and
your tribe succeed—and, always use a #hashtag.
• Not only is Twitter an excellent platform to
disseminate information to customers, it is excellent

for understanding, in real time, what is going on in the
greater marketplace from key influencers.
The marketplace is using Twitter to extract value: ask,
what information do you want extracted from Twitter,
because both personal and company brands are
projected to the world.
Remember, social media brings healthcare consumers,
providers and businesses together through context and
relevance.
Today, the business landscape is more social—that is
not going to change—so post information that inspire
others in your industry to be transformational as well.
Leverage Twitter to understand how to improve your
market presence through competitive analysis, product
improvement and better communication by listening to
what others are saying.
Be objective about social scoring: today, it is just a
reality. Base your engagement on keeping your online
presence authentic and consistent.

Impact and influence: imagine what’s possible
This year’s Woman of the Year, Honorable Mentor
and STAR provide their insights on imagining
what’s possible by examining the impact and
influence we have on each other.
A life’s journey full of possibilities
Denice Torres’ journey to
her current position as president of McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a Johnson &
Johnson company, is one fueled by what’s possible when
one has the support of parents determined to give their
child a life of promise; when
one has the determination to
take on every opportunity;
Denice Torres
when one lives a life of passion and self-awareness; and
when one imagines what’s possible.
Inspired by many people during her career and life journey,
this year’s Woman of the Year, sums up the concept of impact
and influence as having a dream, helping others see the possibilities and working like hell to get it done.
So, how do we get things done, how do we take on big challenges to deliver outcomes that others may not see as possible?
Torres offers a few pearls of wisdom:
• Dream big and don’t compromise on the dream. Invite
others into the dream, paint a clear picture of what success
looks like and feels like. Let the dream become their dream.
If we hold onto the dream too tight, we will stand alone
and things won’t happen. It will be another dream on a
shelf, another presentation on the hard drive.
• Move fast to the point of being uncomfortable. Not
moving fast enough is one of the main reasons change
efforts fail. Hold on to your seat and go, pants on fire.
• Be prepared to walk through a tunnel of darkness; before
there are results there is nearly always a period of extreme
loneliness.
• Be excited, be a source of amazing energy and celebrate
the journey. When you fail, get back up. Yes, get back up—
over and over again—until you cross your defined finish
line. Then celebrate, giving others the credit they deserve.
• For more insights from Torres, follow her on Twitter

Mentoring can lead to new possibilities
Mentorship is a valuable resource that can drive powerful
10

and meaningful change in an
individual’s career, in one’s
life and for businesses that invest in growing their people.
Stuart Sowder, vice president
of external medical communications at Pfizer, says he has
experienced first hand—as a
mentee and as a mentor—the
influence and impact this relationship can have on one’s
career.
Stuart Sowder
He reccommends if you
don’t have a mentor, get one. “Mentorship can happen at any
point in your life; in fact, my first mentor was my dad,” he says.
“Mentors help you imagine the possibilities. The great thing
about mentors is that they have no ulterior motives; they are
invested in you. Mentors have the ability to see something in
you that you may not be able to see in yourself.”
Sowder notes that statistics show that women, in particular, lack champions in the healthcare workplace. According
to RockHealth’s State of Women in Healthcare 2013 report,
63% of women surveyed lacked a mentor.
Sowder says: “imagine the possibilities if we closed this
gap. Imagine if we empowered these women.”
Making an impact by helping others
This year’s STAR Carol Wells, senior director of
commercial training and development at Genentech, was
raised to volunteer; service
was imprinted in her from a
young age. Taking a page out
of her parent’s book of life
lessons, she believes as they
did that at its essence volunteering is about treating every
interaction as an opportuniCarol Wells
ty to give back, or in other
words, a two-way human exchange of kindness.
Wells says we all have opportunities to intentionally lift
someone’s spirits during short interactions. And to make an
impact we need to truly listen—not multi-task with our technology—when someone is speaking with us to provide the critical feedback that can help someone get past an obstacle.
Her parents taught her that when we are intentional and
thoughtful about how we make others feel, every interaction
becomes an opportunity to give back, and the possibilities created are beyond measure.

Celebrating leadership through the years
The HBA Woman of the Year award is a critical element of how the HBA advances our mission. This position
serves as a role model for other women to aspire to, as well as for companies to consider how they are supporting the
advancement of women within their own organization. It is through the development of women within our healthcare
industry that we will move the needle on women’s relevant representation at all levels.

Celebrating leadership: Fit to Lead
Fit to Lead
Taking leadership strength to the next level
Leadership readiness moves from the fast track
to the jogging track, yoga mat, swimming pool
Imagine the possibilities. What if the HBA could offer you
a program that taught valuable business skills, expanded and
strengthened your professional network, helped you feel and
look better and was fun? We have it and it is called Fit to Lead.
“We need to be able to work as a team, communicate under
stressful conditions, be goal-oriented and challenge ourselves
to reach for business success,” says Bonnie Wingate, partner
at Insigniam, vice president for the HBA Greater Philadelphia
chapter, and one of the founders of the Fit To Lead affinity
group. “We wanted to create an innovative offering for members that would help them thrive in today’s business environment and elevate their leadership skills. Instead of a workshop,
we wanted to give them an experience that was exciting and
challenging and a forum for exponential growth.”
A six-month fitness pursuit with a heavy emphasis on leadership development became that unique program that appealed to new and prospective members as well as new partnerships for the chapter.
Fitness and leadership:
What’s the connection?
HBA Corporate Partner EY recently conducted a global
survey of 821 senior managers and executives from a wide
range of sectors, almost all senior managers and executives
participated in sports or fitness. Among women currently
holding a C-suite position, 96% said they had played sports
in school.
And this participation in sports pays off. Annual wages of
former athletes, both men and women, are on average about
7% higher than those of non-athletes according to a 2014 report from the Peterson Institute for National Economics.
We can’t go backward and join a team in school. But we
can participate in athletic activities now.
“Women tend to put others first,” says said Denise Sena,
marketing operations project leader of US customer centricity at Merck and the Fit to Lead chair for the HBA Metro
chapter. “We may drive our kids to sports but neglect our own
participation. People come to the HBA to build a professional
network while polishing their business skills and Fit To Lead is
a fun way to accomplish those goals.”
The case continues to grow for a connection between fitness and business leadership. Mass Mutual conducted a survey
of more than 400 senior businesswomen and found that over
half of them believe that sports assisted in the development
of their leadership, gave them a competitive edge and helped
them deal with failure.

Fueling leadership with fitness
As we take strides to improve our performance
we often have annual goals, attend conferences,
read books, engage mentors and build our
professional network. Now is the time to
think about adding fitness to your professional
development.
• Bring attention to your fitness. Put it in your
schedule. Mark out the time first, not last.
• Try a new activity. Your favorite may be waiting
for you. If you dislike one activity try another.
Trying new things expands your creativity and
adaptability.
• Enjoy small bursts of physical activity. The
research shows that sitting all day is detrimental
to health. Work hard for 60 to 90 minutes on
your desk job, then take a 2-3 minute walking or
desk stretching break.
• Create a challenge in the future and engage a
group to support and learn together on the way
“Failure is an essential part of business,” Wingate says. “In
sales, for example, you hear ‘no’ far more often than ‘yes’.”
Seeing new possibilities
Ashley Tappan, consultant at Insigniam and co-founder of
Fit to Lead shares: “Becoming an athlete helped me consider new possibilities about myself around who I was at work.
Experiencing focus, determination, strength and my own
power in the realm of fitness
allowed me to think of myself
in these ways at work. The
women in our Fit to Lead
program see themselves in
new ways, which surprised
and delighted them.”

Many Paths. One Goal.™
At Pfizer, women are leading businesses, leading manufacturing sites, and leading the
operations in foreign countries. They are leading the discovery of new medicines and
leading the teams that ensure those medicines get to patients safely and are marketed
effectively. Most of all, they are leading the way for hundreds of Pfizer women to advance
their careers and join the executive ranks.
Women at Pfizer enjoy visible support from senior leadership, access to robust mentoring,
sponsorship and development programs, an array of flexibility options, and innovative
programming from the Global Women’s Council. So while each colleague at Pfizer forges
her own path, all arrive at one goal: Helping Pfizer fulfill its purpose of innovating to bring
therapies to patients that significantly improve their lives.

chapter’s Fit to Lead triathalon team.
“I had taken swimming lessons before but just couldn’t put my head in
the water,” she says.
The coaches offered her practical
suggestions to overcome past obstacles
for success.
“Then Lisa Morris, another Fit to
Lead participant suggested I ‘just do
it’, so I took her coaching, and I am
doing it,” Pfenning says. “I’m proud.”
Pfenning says the Fit to Lead experience has helped her be more confident at work, knowing that she can
overcome her internal resistance to
change and that she has even more skills to overcome barriers.
“Don’t be intimidated,” she says. “Enjoy the challenge and
allow yourself to blossom.”
Pfenning’s experience is an example of what research has
shown, that physical fitness of leaders is linked to productivity
and overall achievement.
“The research is clear about the benefits of being physically fit, ” Tappan says. It gives you more stamina, lowers stress
and offers you new ways to learn.
Satisfying an unmet need
Fit to Lead was created to deliver the best the HBA can
offer: a network of professionals that supports your efforts and
the opportunity to strengthen your leadership.
You become more confident as you gain mastery in an area
you had not attempted previously. It is a safe place to push your
boundaries and break through to self-discovery.

is the HBA Fitness Challenge.
Sponsored by Publicis Healthcare Group, HBA
members can log onto a custom website designed to
track the collective fitness activities of participants.
The five-month challenge, culminating just before
the Annual Conference November 3 in Atlanta is
designed to demonstrate the collective impact that we
can have as an association, as we know working (or
walking, running, swimming, etc) together will get us
everywhere. There will be regular updates, social media
challenges and prizes to be awared in November. All
HBA members are welcome to participate and you don’t
have to be in Atlanta to win, although we sure do hope
you will join us.

“Results from our past triathalon are inspiring,” Tappan
explains. “The idea is to learn to stretch your concept of yourself, reach a new height by demonstrating that you can do
more than you ever thought you could. You’ll see how developing physical fitness, no matter what sport you choose, gives
you sustainable energy for your work, your family and your
life.”
Liz Coyle, general manager of commercial research at
IMS Health and the chair of the Council of Chapter Presidents for the HBA, joined the program and participated in her
first triathlon in 2013.
“I learned resilience after falling off a bike during a race
and then finishing the race. That experience helped me stay
resilient during reorganizations at work.”
Fit To Lead events offer an alternative to happy hour or
networking where you can sample fitness activities such as
yoga and spinning.
“When you join Fit to Lead you are joining a group of
diverse women, both physically and professionally, who share
a common interest of better health, fitness and leadership,”
Tappan says. “The events provide support to accomplish your
goals in a setting that’s different than your typical networking
event.”
“I don’t call myself an athlete,” Wingate says. “But I know
that being fit and healthy is important. Pursuing a discipline
that stretches me and my ideas helps me to be a better overall
leader. Being physically fit is as important as reading business
books.”

Celebrating leadership: Q&A with Moira Forbes
Women’s voices in healthcare
Amplifying the conversation to evoke action
Moira Forbes speaks on working together to
bridge the gender gap.
As we said in the last issue of the
HBAdvantage, “it is clear that women’s voices must be heard—and their
real-world experiences taken into account—to communicate effectively
with those making the decisions.”
In this issue, we bring you one of
those voices—that of the remarkable
Moira Forbes, publisher of ForbesWoman, a multi-media platform that
Moira Forbes
includes a website, digital community
and a variety of forums and live events dedicated to women in
business and leadership.
We first got to know Moira last November when she
co-hosted an executive gathering for women in healthcare
with the HBA and Corporate Partner Medidata Solutions.
And we recently caught up with her again for a conversation
on how we can all work together to further the advancement
and impact of women in healthcare.
How can we influence the conversation around
women getting to the top of companies in the life
sciences so that we have maximum impact?
Forbes: While women have made significant strides in
achieving the highest levels of leadership, meaningful barriers still remain. Having a more inclusive workforce is not
just a gender issue, it is a human capital issue that impacts
the health and vitality of organizations around the world.
Research has continued to show that companies with diverse
workforces perform better financially and particularly when
with increased female representation at the board and senior
management levels.
Every company must commit to inclusion and it must
be made a priority starting from the CEO down through all
the management ranks. When senior leaders engage, others
follow and a sense of engagement and responsibility is established across all stakeholders of an organization.
Once we have made a case for diversity at a
company or in an industry, how do we move the
needle?
Forbes: There is no silver bullet solution that can drive the
type of change that we all hope for in the near future. While
we often talk about generalized statistics and bleak trends, we
need to be very tactical and specific in our response to them.
Action plans must be customized to the company and the in-

dustry to best address the root challenges and identify where
the greatest opportunities exist to move the needle.
Taking into consideration the culture of both is critical as
well. Strategic initiatives will never be successful unless they are
embraced and adopted by all levels of a company.
In a company, the charge must come from the top. Senior
leaders need to create a culture of transparency and accountability because companies measure what matters.
Companies need to have plans in place with goals and
key performance indicators that are easy to measure so you
can hold every team and division accountable. You need to
demonstrate quarter-by-quarter, year-by-year progress—and
have a plan to remedy the situation if that progress is not adequate.
Don’t get stuck focusing on the number of women holding
C-suite positions. To have more women ascend to the corner
office, its critical to have a robust and meaningful pipeline of
talent at all levels.
Start at the entry level and look for leaks in the pipeline.
Where are you losing your female talent? Where can you plug
those leaks with policies that help women stay in the workforce?
For those looking to drive change within their organization, they should align their efforts with where their passion
is. Where can you be a champion? Where can you use your
skills, your influence, or your voice to start to see more women
ascend within the talent pipeline or industry?
What are some ways companies can enhance their
culture to create an impact for employees?
Forbes: Flex time and an on and off ramps are few exam-
ples. And all levels must use these. Policy fails without cultural
change. A policy does no good if employees are afraid to use it.
For example, simply having a generous family leave policy
does not change the culture and attitude around employees
taking advantage of it. I recently spoke to a CEO who found
that many women within her company were hesitant to take
advantage of their vast leave benefits. They felt that the time
away could derail their career or create the perception that
they weren’t on the “management track.” The CEO’s solution: require all of her direct reports—both men and women—to take parental leave when they were eligible in an effort
to change that stigma that so many women may have face and
give them a sense of permission to engage in the policies so
critical to creating a more balanced approach to their careers
and their personal lives.
Cultural shifts can also be created with career development plans. Performance reviews, for example, often only look
backward. Take the time to develop three- and five-year career
plans with your employees. Ask them what their growth aspirations are. Is more family time an aspiration in the future? Have

a candid discussion on how their personal plans and goals can
be accommodated in their career plans. Be transparent.
For example, an employee may want to remain in their
current position for a particular amount of time to accommodate family needs and then choose to ramp back up in their job
at a later point. And remember never to assume that women
want to pause their careers because they have children. Work
is a part of life. The lines are blurred. Most of us are moving
toward a seamless integration of paid work and other pursuits
from family to fitness.
We’ve talked to business owners who shared that
they have had a higher salary in mind than the
female candidate asked for, so they paid the lower
salary. What advice do you have for women when
it comes to compensation?
Forbes: As women, we need to get comfortable raising our
hands and asking for money. Know your financial worth and
advocate for it. If you don’t ask for a raise, you will not get it
and don’t wait for your boss to initiate a compensation conversation or assume that it is top of mind to them.
Reframe the conversation from strictly asking for money to
making it about the value you bring to the organization. And
never apologize for asking for an increase.
What advice would you offer women to help them
advance their careers?
Forbes: Don’t be so hard on yourself. As women, we can
often be our own harshest critics. We hold ourselves to nearly
impossible standards. Sometimes we need to know that good
is good enough.
So recalibrate your expectations. A pursuit of perfection
can lead to women to burn out or feel like they can’t take on
new challenges or take career risks. We think we can’t do the
job perfectly so we get out of the running. We feel guilty about
not being the perfect employee, family member or self so we
lower our career ambitions.
Get comfortable with the fact that life is messy. Look at
your assets as more than the hours you spend at work and
don’t sell yourself short when new opportunities arise. Pursue
your goals to be a complete you.
Family, fun, learning and downtime all help you become a
more complete leader. When you are more complete, you do
a better job.
A key benefit offered by the HBA is a supportive
professional network. Do you feel that is
critical for women to obtain the same level of
achievement in business as men?
Forbes: We need formal programs for mentoring and spon-
sorship such as those offered by the HBA. Building and maintaining a diverse professional network is critical. “Work” is in
the word network. My advice to women is to build a community for themselves, one that empowers them and strengthens
their growth.
You must hardwire networking time into your schedule.
It is not a distraction. Networking is a very valuable use of
your time and efforts, even if you might not always see that
value immediately.
