Crivitz Recreation Association
C rivitz was founded by German immigrant Fredderick Bartels. It was named after his homtown of Crivitz Germany. The Crivitz area has a deep history of logging. Logs were moved to mills and lumberyards in serveral ways, by horse drawn sleds, railroads and even by waterways. Streams and rivers provided existing pathways to get logs from woodlands to processing yards. The next great change came from the construction of hydro-electic dams. High Falls Flowage, on the Peshtigo River, was one of the earliest successful major hydro projects in Wisconsin. It is one of twenty-one notable hydro dams built in the United State before World War I. The idea was spawned by Frank H. Josslyn. Being the first dam of four to be built on the Peshtigo, there were many unforeseen obstacles that had to be overcome. One of those was the location. It was built nineteen miles from the closest rail road at Ellis Junction, now Crivitz. Because of the poor sand roads, most of the heavy equipment was hauled from Crivitz in the winter on sleds pulled by teams of horses. It has been said it took thirty two horses and a fifteen man crew seven days to move one eighteen ton transformer from Crivitz to High Falls. They threw the switch on the Westinghouse switch board for the first time on August 15, 1910. The hydro supplied electric power to the city of Green Bay and beyond. High Falls Dam has been continuously producing electricity for over 100 years. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With the success of the High Falls Dam, three more Hydro Power Plants were built along this stretch of river. The dam on Lake Noquebay effectively brought up the level of the lake, enhanced the shoreline, and enlarged this popular recreation lake. A byproduct of these dams was the reservoirs they created. These reservoirs produced fantastic fishing and recreational areas of great expanse. Our reputation as a quality fishing area quickly spread far and wide. This was the beginning for the tourism in the Crivitz area. www.crivitz.com ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com 1 photos courtesy Becky Popp tesy photos cour I f you haven’t heard by now, our area is an awesome playground. Part of the reason is the number of public park areas for our visiting friends and neighbors to enjoy. Our hundreds of thousands of acres of county and state owned lands are dotted with a wide variety of parks and camping areas. Lake Noquebay, Twin Bridge, Veterans, and Davis Falls are all county owned parks. They are also all within a half hour of the Village of Crivitz. McClintock and Goodman Parks are a bit further away, but well worth the drive to see the rapids. Becky Popp of the world? We’re far enough to leave troubles behind and close enough so you don’t have to break the bank to get here. There are both private and public campgrounds from which you can enjoy boating, fishing and other outdoor activities. Our north woods camping will keep you close to nature and give you back the sanity the city strife has taken away. Any old way you want to camp, you can pick your own pace. 4 he 2800-acre Governor Thompson State Park is located on the southern shore of Caldron Falls Flowage just northwest of Crivitz. Visitors may drive through the park to view the pristine shoreline of the Peshtigo River Flowage. The state park has a large picnic area on Woods Lake, and an improved boat landing on Caldron Falls Flowage (#13). It also recently completed a 100-site campground, three boat access campsites, and 16 miles of hiking trails to get you off the beaten path to see the picturesque granite rock outcroppings and the abundant wildlife that call this retreat their home. When the snow flies, we have six miles of groomed ski trails for both classic and skate skiers and 2.5 miles of packed snowshoe trails. There is a warming shelter available at Woods Lake. Shore-fishing, ice-fishing and non-motorized boating is permitted on the two inland lakes. Admission fee required. nski y Pepli y Bunn s e rt u co photo T BJ photo courtesy he Crivitz area has a broad variety of feathered friends. A half hour northwest of Crivitz is the place to test your skills on this most exciting adventure. Quiet water, rapids and falls, are all in this stretch of river. River trips begin in spring and continue through summer and early fall. Our rafting companies cater to the first timer, experienced hardcore rafters, and all of those that are somewhere in between. Don’t worry about being equipped; the rafts, oars and other gear are supplied to you by your outfitter. 6 www.crivitz.com ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com The scenery is gorgeous. The Twin Bridge Ski Team performs west of Crivitz on the High Falls Flowage, at the Stephenson Town Park Thursdays and Saturdays at 6:30pm. The Crivitz Ski Cats perform east of Crivitz on Lake Noquebay, Lake Noquebay County Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 6:30pm. Twin Bridge Ski Tea m Both shows have no admission fee, but donations are welcome. Food and refreshments are available for purchase on site. Bring your lawn chair or blanket to watch the show. These shows are excellent entertainment for the whole family. You will see some of the best skiers in the state of Wisconsin, including those who have skied professionally all over the world. You will see unbelievable barefoot pyramids, twenty girl ballet lines, mixed doubles, four tier pyramids and jumping that will have you asking “how did they do that?” Crivitz Ski Cats 13 S ome BEACH right here! Looking for a little beach action for you and the kids? How about a little tour of the best beaches in the near north area. Start at the big lake, Lake Noquebay Park. Fine sand and a gradual taper to deeper water make this one of the most popular swimming spots in the county. The park also has play ground equipment for the kids and a boat landing from which to set sail. Rent the lodge for gatherings or just for picnic fun. If fun on the flowage is what you would like to try, then look up Twin Bridge County Park. It is just a minute or two from Tommy Thompson State Park. This park has not only a great beach area, but, camping, showers, picnic areas, grill sites, and boat landings up and down the flowage. The pristine shoreline along the flowage looks like the far off Canadian wilderness, but it is much closer to home. 14 Moving on to the jewel of Stephenson township, we head over to Newton Lake. This recently rebuilt beach area has a sandy beach area that is just off the main path. Little Newton has long been a local favorite of both full and part time residents. A bit less well known is the beach area at boat landing 7Wolf Rock. Locals swim out to the rock and jump into deeper water. This landing is not just for the boaters, it’s also great for the floaters! Last on the list is an area a bit further north. The scenic drive up Highway I (Parkway) will take you through a large part of Marinette County’s Forest land to Goodman Park. Where’s the beach? Not here. Mother nature has provided her own water park. The slippery rock formations have been worn smooth by the constant flow of Peshtigo River water. If you plan it just right, you slide down the rocks and into the shallow pool below. This is cool whitewater and very refreshing on a hot summer day. T he two largest and most popular bodies of water in this area are Lake Noquebay and the Peshtigo River Flowages. The wandering shorelines on these two waterways provide boaters with hours of touring pleasure. Forested islands dot both bodies of water, each one having a little something different to look at. Whether you are cruising, skiing, sailing, or just touring. A boat ride on any of the “Crivitz” lakes is an enjoyable way to spend the day. photo co urtesy B unny Pe plin ski www.crivitz.com ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com 15 dining 47 50 24 photo courtesy Bunny Peplinski 16 www.crivitz.com ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com dining 37 43 17 photo courtesy Bunny Peplinski photo courtesy Bunny Peplinski 17 lodging 41 18 www.crivitz.com ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com lodging 32 19 48 13 20 lodging lodging 29 7 52 39 www.crivitz.com 34 ❘ www.crivitzrecreation.com 21 lodging - business & service chart 305 US Hwy 141 Crivitz, WI 2 Locations Crivitz, WI Bank Mutual Bank North 715.854.7311 bankmutual.com 715.854.2541 banknorthwis.com 611 Main Ave Crivitz Lumber J&T Electric Lakes Construction North Reach Medical 510 US Hwy 141 715.854.7821 Crivitz, WI 7 US Hwy 141 Crivitz, WI 717 Dyer St Crivitz, WI frankporth.com ✓ ✓ 30 ✓ ✓ 30 ✓ ✓ 715.854.7225 218 S. Thousands of acres of county forest, state forest, and national forest, provide the avid hunter with nearly unlimited space to pursue their quarry. Every year the whitetail deer harvest in Crivitz and surrounding Marinette County ranks at or near the top for whitetail deer hunting in Wisconsin. Looking for something a little more adventurous? Black bear populations have recently increased to numbers that give better chances for success than was ever dreamed of. Ruffed grouse is the upland game bird of choice and we have easy access to some of the best grouse habitat anywhere in the north woods. Sportsman love our “Gateway to the North”. photos courte sy David Heritsc h Leon ourtesy photo c Popp 37 photo courtesy Bonnie Popp Popp ecky esy B court photo E ach fall, where the dairy land turns to forest, the colors turn into a visual playground that attracts fall visitors looking to see nature’s handy work. You can travel hills in the woods, across blowing fields, or navigate through our Peshtigo River Valley. Don’t miss the trails from Lake Noquebay to The Menominee River. We have incredible trails on county land, state forests, and through the private woods owned by generous landowners. If you are new to the sport, rent yourself all the gear or machines you need, or bring your own and test your ability. Our trails connect with others, not that you would ever want to leave, but it helps for when you are looking to find your way back. THINK SNOW!!! TRAILS! TRAILS!
