This is a follow-up to that trip as the Bortrees and Velezes continued to Gateway, Colorado. Story by Bob, pictures by Alana. “Gateway Colorado Automobile Collection Gateway, Colorado Sunday morning and the Velezes , Maggie and I head over on a very scenic drive to Gateway Auto Collection—you may remember that this museum purchased the “one of “ 1954 F-88 Oldsmobile Concept car at Barrett Jackson a few years ago. We did have a little problem finding the museum as signs were not in evidence. Had I reviewed the writeup I got from the web, I might have realized that it was somehow a part of a large resort. The attendant assured me by phone that is was obvious when you get there---NOT. However, we finally did find this fabulous museum. The Discovery Channel founder, John Hendricks, has his private collection here on site. Rick Hendricks of Nascar Fame. I can say that this was the most PRISTINE car collection I have ever seen. The museum is less than ten years old and pristine as well. The collection consisted of approximately 68 cars----they also have another 70 cars that they rotate out approximately 15 cars every 3-4 months. We began the tour with a video with Walter Cronkite hosting the event. Then we were allowed to view some of the most gorgeous cars you will ever see—look it up on the web: The one and only 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 concept car. The one and only 1961 DeSoto Adventurer concept car designed by Darrin. 1961 Chrysler 300G convertible with a 3 speed transmission—only 5 ever made. 1937 Hudson Terraplane Cabrolet that out performed Ford and Chevrolet at a lesser cost. A Packard Woody Station Wagon. Darrin sports car with the sliding door—I have seen these before but not in this fantastic shape. 1932 Auburn Boattail Roadster to die for. The muscle cars were nice but overwhelmed by the rest of the collection. Many, many more fantastic cars starting in the early 1900’s thru the muscle car era. Maggie only found one nick on a car and she always finds stuff like that. I will say it again as I did over and over at the museum---PRISTINE CARS. We spent about 3 hours oohing an ahhing before exiting for lunch. If you are ever up in the area, it is a must stop. It is south of Grand Junction, Colorado. approximately 50 miles. We thoroughly enjoyed the museum and would highly recommend it to any car enthusiast. We then headed to Cortez, Colorado. where the Velezes headed off for Flagstaff. Maggie and I stayed the night and got up the next morning to tour Mesa Verde National Park. I had never been there and had the time to stop and view this great national treasure. Maggie and I had a fantastic time with friends enjoying cars and the fantastic scenery in Utah and Colorado.” ROUTE 66 COURIER “RIORDAN DAYS of SUMMER “ CAR DISPLAY Fifteen cars of members went on display in support of the Riordan Mansion fund raiser on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Members set up their folding chairs and had an enjoyable conversation under the pine trees throughout a beautiful morning. But...around two o'clock in the afternoon gray rain clouds descended on the mansion and suddenly... all the convertible cars disappeared. PAGE 5 ROUTE 66 COURIER PAGE 6 4TH OF JULY INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE A BIG SUCCESS! 17 Cars, amply decorated, contributed to this years 4th of July Parade in Flagstaff. The weather was pleasant for the parade which was good as the parade kicked off at 9:00 but the Route 66 Car Club did not launch until after 10:00 due to being the 82nd group of the parade. ROUTE 66 COURIER PAGE 7 4th of July Parade (Con’t) Note: Bob Bortree and Juergen Burmeister raced from the Flagstaff parade to William’s parade, barely getting there in time to participate. Afterwards Juergen went to Park’s parade as our club’s sole entry. Congratulations to Juergen for making all three parades!! Last Page
