In the elementary division grades PreK through Grade 4, students and parents may request access to a list of apps being used at school that they are welcome to load on personally owned devices for home practice. We ask that students in PreK through Grade 4 not bring personal devices to school. Not all textbooks are available at this time. This includes investigating electronic options that can be effectively utilized for our students to reduce – or eliminate – the backpack baggage. What apps will be used in the elementary division? Can my child print from the iPad? Lists of apps being used at each grade level will be provided parents and students for use at home on personally owned devices. While we hope to significantly reduce paper consumption through the use of the iPad, there are several networked printers available to students. At home, the iPad can communicate easily with newer printers having AirPrint and ePrint capabilities. Another option is using email to move documents to another device for printing purposes. Will the school provide filtering to prevent access to inappropriate websites or applications? The student wireless network is protected by an effective website filtering program that restricts access to websites and web-based programs that are inappropriate for school use. When connected to LSA’s Wi-Fi network, student devices with the LSA profile are protected by a 5 Who will provide the iPads? How much will the iPad cost? Apple: The minimum specifications required for students for the 2016-2017 school year are the iPad (4th generation) with retina display, 16GB with WiFi. For additional information, see iPad Model Requirements for 2016-2017. Should my student’s iPad have personal files, apps and music? Students are required to have a case for their iPads. Many different types of iPad cases and covers that provide a range of protection are available online and at local retail outlets. Some of the many options available include: Are any of the iPad Pro models accepted? Is the iPad Mini acceptable? Not at this time. Is an iPad with a cellular data connection required? No. LSA is a Wi-Fi campus. In fact, we will be requiring students to turn off cellular access on their iPads during school hours. (Many other cases are available. Amazon.com is also a great resource.) 6 Since this will be a personally-owned device, will we have to register it with the school to log in to campus Wi-Fi? lies, there will be limitations on the number/cost of paid apps teachers can require. A Required Apps list is posted on the website. Yes. Profiles are installed on school-owned and student-owned devices in order to access LSA's Wi-Fi network. The profile enables restrictions for media content and are based on the approximate age of the grade level. These restrictions are activated on and off campus. While restrictions control media content, such as movies, TV shows, apps and explicit music, they do not restrict what can be accessed while on the Internet. IPads for students in grades 7-12 will be profiled during schedule pickup. Should 5th-12th grade students have their own Apple ID? It is recommended that each child have their own Apple ID. This ID can follow students throughout their school years and provide them access to all purchases – school and personal – regardless of the device. Students under the age of 13 who are in 5th grade or are new to LSA will have an Apple ID provided for them through the school. You may set up a NON-CREDIT CARD account capable of redeeming paid apps only through the use of an iTunes gift card. Fifth and sixth grade student iPads will be configured during the first week of school. Will the iPad be used in every class, everyday? Not necessarily. The intent of the 1:1 initiative is to incorporate technology into instruction in all subject areas. Some material more easily lends itself to enhancement through available apps and electronic resources. Apps will not drive the curriculum, but there are many subject-related and productivity apps available that can enhance the learning process. Will the school provide filtering to prevent access to inappropriate websites or applications? The student wireless network is protected by an effective website filtering program that limits access to websites and web-based programs that are inappropriate for school use. When connected to LSA’s Wi-Fi network, student devices with the LSA student profile will be protected by a filter so that content from Internet browser such as Safari, will only include educationally appropriate materials. The filter does not work off campus, and parental guidance is suggested for access off campus. Should students back up information on their iPads? Definitely! iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your device. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPad in Settings > iCloud > Backup & Storage, it will run on a daily basis as long as your device is connected to Internet over Wi-Fi, connected to a power source, and has the screen locked. iPads can also be backed up to iTunes. For specific directions on backing up your iPad, visit: support.apple.com/kb/ht1766. Will students be able to charge their iPads at school? Students should come to school with the device fully charged, just as they would come to school prepared with books, paper, and pencils. What apps will be required? On student-owned equipment, all app purchases will be the responsibility of the student. However, to avoid excessive expenses to our fami7 How can I as a parent control Internet access for my child on the iPad? A word about discipline regarding the use of these devices... Lee-Scott Academy reserves the right to access and inspect any student’s device, anytime, for any reason – even if it is personally owned – including and especially if the device is used inappropriately. More information about this can be found on the Responsible Use Policies for each grade level, available on the LSA web site. There are several Internet browsers that allow parents to set limits to sites students can view. Mobicip (www.mobicip.com/) and Covenant Eyes (www.covenanteyes.com/) are two options you may want to explore. Common Sense Media (www.commonsensemedia.org) is a notfor-profit organization that is recommended for parents interested in pursuing more information and resources about the digital world and their children. Will my child need a computer even if he/she has an iPad? The iPad was not designed as a complete computer replacement, but has advanced in its capability as both a consumption and a creation device through iWorks (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) and other apps to handle the vast majority of student needs. Stationary PC desktops in the secondary lab and the library will also be available for student use and instruction for grades 7-12. Mobile MacBook carts stocked with 11” MacBook Airs are available for checkout by teachers for use in individual classrooms. Some students may prefer to add a wireless keyboard to their iPad, but it is not a required accessory. Where can my child securely store his/her iPad during participation in extracurricular activities? Lockers are available for student use in both academic and athletic buildings. School-issued locks for secondary building lockers are available from homeroom teachers beginning the first day of school. Students are responsible for providing their own locks for their P.E. lockers. Students are strongly encouraged to secure their iPads in their lockers or in a school provided storage cart located in the coaches' offices during after school practices. Replacing lost, stolen or damaged personally-owned devices is the responsibility of the student/family. 8
