The City of Lights procession and
Christmas lights switch-on mark the
start of our Christmas festivities on
Wednesday 16 November, followed by
late night shopping every Wednesday
evening from 23 Nov to 21 Dec.
Shops throughout the city will open
until 9pm for late night shopping and
the streets will be filled with festive
market stalls, entertainers, brass
bands and carol singers, all rounded
off with the festive smell of mulled
wine and hot chestnuts!
Truro’s cafes, bars and restaurants
will be opening their doors to hungry
shoppers and festive merry makers
alike, with many offering special deals
on their delicious food and drink
menus.
This pocket guide will tell you
everything you need to know about
Christmas in Truro. It includes an event
calendar, a street by street shopping
directory and information on travelling
to Truro. So plan ahead this Christmas
and combine your shopping trips with
carol singing at the Cathedral followed
by a mince pie and mulled wine from
the famous street markets.

the annual Christmas present buying dash.
Late night shopping launches on
Wednesday 23 November in spectacular
style as Father Christmas and his reindeer
parade through the city centre on his sleigh.

The city houses an eclectic mix of both
independent retailers and popular high
street names. From toyshops to fashion
boutiques, and delicatessens to wine
merchants, Truro is the perfect place to find
special Christmas gifts for the whole family.
There is also a wide selection of markets in
Truro, with two permanent indoor markets
and additional food and craft markets held
during the festive season.The Pannier
Market with its traditional stores and the
Lemon Street Market with its art gallery,
retailers and cafes.
This Christmas, Truro welcomes back the
famous Victorian Market with over 70
exhibitors and producers all in period

St Clement’s Street, Pydar Street, Union Street,
Castle Street, River Street, St Nicholas Street,
Boscawen Street, Princes Street, Green Street and
Lemon Quay - the route is shown on page 18.

Nothing heralds the Christmas season quite like the warm
glow of festive lights. Truro will once again light up in
spectacular fashion as the hugely anticipated City of
Lights festival and parade delights the gathered crowds.
The event sees a dazzling procession of withy and tissue
lanterns float through the streets, handmade and carried
by professional artists, Cornish school children and local
community and youth groups. This year’s theme is Wildlife
- who knows where the artists imagination will take them
this year? The evening’s entertainment will include the
official switch-on of Truro’s Christmas lights, plus music
and dance from Truro School of Samba and local bands.
The Christmas lights switch-on will take place when the
parade pauses for a grand countdown in Boscawen
Street. The parade will finish 8.00 - 8.30pm.
City of Lights is free thanks to the generosity of the public,
our sponsors and partners. Donations leading up to the
event and on the night itself are greatly appreciated and
go a long way to securing the future of this much loved
event. Supporters of City of Lights can make donations,
up to £10 via our Vodaphone Just Text Giving service by
texting COLT11 and either 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 to 70070.
All of the donations will go directly to City of Lights. It’s a
wonderful way to raise money for the event as it’s so
simple and quick - we'll still be out there rattling our

This is a popular occasion, bringing the countryside and
farming into the heart of the city. You can see at close
hand the very best of the county’s beef cattle and sheep
being judged and then sold, as well as admiring a
wonderful show and exhibition of farm produce and a
host of other exhibits. There is always a wonderful
atmosphere in the marquee which provides a unique
opportunity to see live cattle and sheep literally within a
few yards of some of Truro’s major shops and stores.

1000 voices singing for sheer enjoyment! Cornwall Youth

If you choose to drive
Truro collectively has over 3,000 car parking spaces
between its 9 city centre car parks so there is ample
space if you choose to drive. Look out for the electronic
signs situated on the major access routes to the city
centre, informing you of the availability of parking
spaces in the car parks.

Plymouth. There is also a branch line, which operates

Disabled parking
Disabled visitors, who hold and display a disabled
badge, are able to park on the following streets (please
note that disabled parking will be suspended in certain
areas to support the road closures that will be in place
on Wednesday late night shopping evenings. Additional
disabled parking will be made available in the Moorfield
car park but please check before starting your journey):
Lemon Street, Boscawen Street, River Street, King
Street and Duke Street. Certain car parks have
designated spaces for disabled visitors, these are:
Garras Wharf, Old Bridge Street, Moorfield, Viaduct and
Lemon Quay
Disabled badge holders must pay the relevant parking
charge for the period they require unless they are
exempt from payment i.e. they have a tax disc marked
nil or disabled, the parked vehicle is an invalid carriage,
they have an especially adapted vehicle or it is an Age
Concern Cornwall vehicle.
Shopmobility
Truro's shop mobility scheme allows anyone with a
temporary or permanent mobility problem to access the
city. The service is available to residents or visitors to the
city. Go! Truro can be found at the Moorfield Car Park on
the Calenick Street entrance.
The centre offers the loan of a range of electric scooters
and manual wheelchairs to the general public. The first
time you use the service you will be required to bring
proof of identification and you will be asked to fill in a
short registration form. You will then be asked to pay a
small annual membership fee to maintain the centre. The
staff will then train you how to use the equipment. This
should take no longer than 15-30 minutes and when you
feel ready off you go! It is recommended to ring the
office in advance to arrange the loan of your equipment.

Totally Truro
Truro is the retail centre of Cornwall and boasts an enviable
range of independent shops and multiples. In a compact city
centre, this strong and diverse mix is unique - Truro is not a
clone of other towns. Its intriguing and eclectic offer of art
galleries, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, a cinema, The Hall
for Cornwall, Truro Cathedral and The Royal Cornwall
Museum make it a year round destination for those who live,
work and visit the city. Truro was the first location in Cornwall
to introduce a Business Improvement District (BID) as a
method of realising the views and aspirations of local
businesses to improve their trading environment, along with
an appropriate budget and resource to deliver.
A Business Improvement District (BID) is a precisely defined
geographical area of a town, city or any other commercial
district where ratepayers have voted to invest collectively in
local improvements that are in addition to those already
delivered by the local authority.
