You feel like the lake is yours for the time you are there. Considering the amount of space available, the feeling might not be far from wrong. In a typical year, the best boating occurs from Memorial Day through early September. Full lake levels occur the beginning of the season, with the annual drawdown commencing in mid August. By late fall, the lake is usually down at least 3’ so some caution is required in shallow bays or coves. The lake is adequately marked with hazard buoys, but only beyond 200’ from the shore. Launching facilities are available in Greenville, Rockwood and Seboomook for public use. There are numerous other lakes and ponds in the Moosehead area that offer all types of boating opportunities. 10 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org For those of you seeking privacy and solitude for canoeing and kayaking scores of smaller lakes and ponds await you. Some of our favorites are the Wilson Ponds, Prong Pond, First Roach Pond, Brassua Lake, Mountain View Pond, Sawyer and Indian Ponds. These all offer launching but some are carry in. For those of you who would like to experience the beauty and tranquility of gliding across a pond and sneaking up on the wildlife that calls this area their home, you may rent equipment at local shops in town. Some even offer pick up and delivery to your destination. Regardless of the size of your boat, there is abundant room for you to enjoy the Moosehead Lake area, a true boater’s paradise! 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org 11 MLRCOC Schedule of Events For further information on what is happening check out the EVENTS CALENDAR on our website. craig wat t A yearly, somber, snowmobile ride to the wreckage site of the B-52 Stratofortress Bomber which crashed into Elephant Mountain in January 1963 during a training flight. For many years, water traffic was the main mode of transportation in this region. Steamboats carried livestock, equipment, supplies and passengers. The need for Moosehead steamboats waned with the coming of roads. The last survivor of the fleet, the Katahdin became a towboat hauling pulpwood rafts. In 1975, she hauled her last log boom across Moosehead Lake to the East Outlet. Scott Paper Company presented the Katahdin to the Moosehead Marine Museum in 1977. In 1985, after many years of devoted work by many, the Katahdin, Queen of the fleet, once again sailed over the deep waters of Moosehead Lake. The Katahdin is the oldest floating hull of Bath Iron Works, built in 1914. The major repairs to the hull of the Katahdin have been completed, but funding is still needed. All donations and memberships to the Moosehead Marine Museum are greatly appreciated. Call or visit our website for a free vacation planning guide. Swartz marie candeloro • The best times to see moose are early in the morning or later in the evening (dusk). •DOT (Department of Transportation) | Greenville - Head south approximately 4.5 miles from the Visitor’s Center and on your right is one of the best places for sighting moose in the area. If heading north towards Greenville, as you drive through Shirley, be sure to look for the DOT sign the moose will be across the street. •The best time of year to see a moose is from mid-spring through late June. •Lily Bay Road | Kokadjo - Take a scenic drive to Kokadjo, a small community north of Greenville. Stay on Lily Bay Road for approx. 20 miles and keep your eyes open for moose along the way! •Moose prefer shady, wet areas such as bogs and marshes. •Always be aware when you are driving after dark to be alert for any moose in the road. The five moose photos on the cover are all by the 2010 Moose Mainea Photo Contest winner, amateur photographer Linda Horton of Miami, Florida. Linda visited the Moosehead Lake area four times in 2010 and went on four moose safaris. Linda writes that she saw over 100 moose during her travels and on one of her trips she witnessed a baby moose which the cow had delivered just minutes before. 34 Local Moose Hangouts: •Lazy Tom Bog | Kokadjo - If you’ve reached Kokadjo and still haven’t had your fill of moose sightings, head to Lazy Tom Bog by continuing north 1.5 miles past the bridge in Kokadjo. Stay to your left, then take the intersection to the left and continue for half a mile more to the bridge over Lazy Tom Stream. Lisa eaton •The flap of skin under the moose’s throat is called a bell. •Only male moose grow antlers, which they shed in early winter and re-grow during the year. The main function of antlers is for display during the mating season. •In the Moosehead Lake Region, Moose out-number people 3 to 1. •Moose have no top front teeth. •After the first calf, Moose quite often have twins. •Moose can only see about 25 feet. •The first law to protect Moose was passed in 1930. To improve your odds of seeing a moose, you might try a Guided Moose Safari. See page 57 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org •Mt.
