Williams hoists USBC TCBA
Senior Masters trophy Award
Winners
LAS VEGAS - Walter Ray
Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla.,
used a fortunate strike in the
final frame Friday to secure his
first career United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters
title.
The USBC Hall of Famer carried a light shot that collapsed
the 2-4-5 for a strike to defeat
Jack Jurek of Lackawanna,
N.Y., 240-219, to claim the title
at South Point Bowling Center.
Heading into the final
frame, Williams needed a
strike to lock up the title or
nine, spare, strike to secure at
least a tie. Had he left anything
less than nine on his first shot
in the last frame, he would
have lost.

leave the 2-4-5, and they just
kept tumbling over," said Williams, who has 47 PBA Tour
and eight PBA50 Tour titles in
his career. "To get a strike and
win with a hit like that is just
crazy. I don't think I've ever
done that in a title match."

At the national TCBA
awards meeting last Friday,
several DFW area ladies were
honored.
Jennifer Hayes was named
the TCBA National Bowler of
the Year, Most Valuable Bowler
and High Average Award.
Arvese McGraw won the
Sportsmanship Award.
And our own Leisha Murr
was inducted into the TCBA
Hall of Fame!
“I was shocked, honored and
completely surprised,” Murr
said on her induction.
Leisha has been a tireless
supporter of TCBA for the last
15 years; bowling the All-Star
tournament each year, and
being a member of several successful teams in the process.
Her team won the national
tournament in 2002 and 2011.

LEBANON, Ill. —McKendree
University director of athletics Chuck Brueggemann has
announced the addition of two
new staff members who are
recognizable faces in the world
of bowling.
Professional bowler Shannon O’Keefe has been named as
the head coach of the women’s
bowling program, while her
husband Bryan O’Keefe – an
assistant coach for Team USA
– will take the reins as the
director of bowling for both the
men’s and women’s squads for
the Bearcats.
“We are absolutely thrilled
to be able to bring Shannon
and Bryan into the McKendree
family,” said Brueggemann.
“While their lofty credentials
certainly speak for themselves,
their personalities and desire
to compete at the highest level
really make them stand above
the rest. They both have a
passion that goes beyond what
happens on the lanes. Shannon
and Bryan are great teachers
and ambassadors of the sport
of bowling, and their impact on
McKendree University will be
tremendous. We look forward
to watching these dynamic
individuals continue to elevate
our programs among the elite
in collegiate bowling.”
Shannon O’Keefe has made
quite a mark for herself since
reaching the professional
ranks in 2003. She is a 10-time
member of Team USA since,
competing in tournaments
around the world. O’Keefe is
also a five-time world champion and has collected more
than 30 international medals
in competition. In addition,
O’Keefe has won three Texas
State Queens championships
along with a pair of New York
State Queens titles.
The Oregon native was also
the runner-up at the 2007 U.S.
Women’s Open, where she shot
a 299 in the semifinal round.
O’Keefe’s athletic ability has
not been limited to the bowling
lanes. She was a first-team

Random Thoughts
Tony Franklin, Publisher
Well, next weekend we
will be in Reno for The Open
Championship. Reno has
become a place I really enjoy
going to, which didn’t used to
be the case. Most folks bash on
‘ole Reno pretty hard, but other
than the cost of the flight,
there isn’t too much to hate on.
Great climate, great views, I
still love the stadium, easy to get
around; I mean, how bad can it
be. There’s much worse out there.
Our team consists of me, Genie, Tina Williams (Stickney),
Sandi Charles, and Lisa Wasson. I’m very proud and happy
to have Lisa on the team this
year. When we suddenly lost
Tam last month, in my mind
there was only one person who
could/should fill his sizeable
shoes; his lovely wife Lisa.
The girls will also be
bowling the USBC Women’s
championship, so I’ll get an
opportunity to listen to the
great Stu Williams provide
color commentary for their
nine games…should be fun, he
never tires of talking. If I have
to get pulled away from the
craps table, it might as well be
for a good reason.
So off to Reno we go for a
few days of fun in the sun.
Last week at the Open, Frisco
Doug Rice was on the livestream show, purely by accident
I might add. He was the com-
panion team to the “star” of the
show, Fero Williams, who has
something like 140 sanctioned
300 games. Williams’ team shot
3091, but he led the way with
737, and 1947 for all-events.
FD shot a respectable 607
with his team shooting 3079.
He then shot 614 in Singles
and 652 in doubles for an 1873
all-events total.

A very interesting video
is making its way around the
internet right now. Check out
“Bowling Trick Shots with
Dude Perfect. PBA star Jason
Belmonte is the featured player
doing the majority of the outstanding tricks, some that I’ve
never seen before. The 6-minute
video was taped at USA Bowl
in Dallas, Strikz in Frisco and
also a local skate park, yes
that’s right, I said skate park.
Now once you watch it, keep
in mind that they didn’t get all
of these on the first try. There
were several, several, several
attempts for some. And once
you catch the shots at the skate
park, you will wonder how the
EVER got it to work,
but they did, and it’s
pretty cool. Enjoy.

WILLIAMS HOISTS
Continued from Page 1
Jurek stepped up in the 10th
frame first and got just enough
to put the pressure on Williams, who finished the match
last. But it wasn't enough, as
Jurek fell short of the title and
added a runner-up Senior Masters finish to his two runner-up
finishes at the USBC Masters.
In the semifinal, Williams
took down fifth seed Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla., 237-214.
Edwards defeated defending
champion Pete Weber of St.
Ann, Mo., 237-209, and opened
the stepladder with a 254-184
win over Amleto Monacelli of
Venezuela.
Williams earned $18,000
for the victory, while the total
prize pool for the event was
$144,400.
The stepladder finals were
broadcast live on BOWL.com's
BowlTV and are available for

Thoughts on your big night?
One of those nights where
everything held up and I
played the lanes without a lot
of adjustments, and got good
results. It was nice to be able
to complete an 800. I had a
couple of chances earlier in the
year, and didn’t finish it off. I
was telling my friends when
we went out to Reno that I was
throwing it really well and felt
like it was going to happen.
The last 3 months have been
going well, even with only
bowling 3 games a week.
What ball did you throw?
The Brunswick Rattler. It was
a ball that I had in the garage
because my stuff was on its
way back from Reno.
Who drills your balls? Wes
Holmes, but Dino Castillo has
drilled the last few.
What is your all-time favorite bowling ball? The original

Russell wins PBA Bear Open
for second PBA Tour Title
New-found confidence key to first victory in U.S.
after 11 years, 159 tournaments
SHAWNEE, Okla. – After
11 years and 159 tournaments,
Ronnie Russell of Marion,
Ind., won his first Professional
Bowlers Association Tour title
on U.S. soil at the Grand Casino
Resort Event Center, defeating
top qualifier Tommy Jones of
Simpsonville, S.C., 234-164, to
win the PBA Bear Open.
The finals of the second of
five Oklahoma’s Grand Casino
Resort PBA Summer Swing
events, contested on a demanding flat, 40-foot Bear lane
condition, aired Tuesday on
CBS Sports Network.
Russell, who said he discovered what it takes to win when
he won the 2013 Brunswick
Euro Challenge in Munich,
earned $10,000 for winning the
Bear Open.
He also claimed a spot in
the Oklahoma’s Grand Resort
Casino King of the Swing
special event that will conclude
the Summer Swing. Wolf Open
winner Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., previously qualified for
the King of the Swing.
Russell, a 34-year-old righthander, said a high level of
focus and excellent spare shooting led to his title, but in the
title match, it was a string of
four strikes and another double
that made it look easy as Jones
struggled the entire match.
“The biggest key is, I’ve
bowled on TV quite a bit now
and I’ve been through the
worst imaginable things you
can do to lose titles – I mean
absolutely the worst – so now
I just tell myself to focus on
the shot and no matter what
you do, you can’t do as bad as
you did before,” Russell said.
“I’ve been to the bottom, so I
figured there has to be a top
somewhere.
“Ever since I threw a
strike to win in Germany, I’ve
known I can do it again. My
composure and everything has
changed, and I actually have
confidence now. It’s awesome.”

strike but left a 10 pin on his
second, handing Russell a
195-192 decision.
The finals capped a calm,
steady qualifying performance
by Russell in the preliminary
rounds at nearby FireLake
Bowling Center.
“I didn’t shoot under 200
the entire (first 12 games at
FireLake),” he said. “My spare
shooting was awesome. The
only reason I didn’t lead the
tournament was that every
time I had a chance to shoot

frame. I just stayed in that
pace between 200 and 220 and

Looking for an Exciting, Full-time opportunity to
work in a fun, fast-paced environment!!!!
Duties & Responsibilities:
Russell advanced to his first
title-match appearance in the
U.S. since the 2009 Chameleon
Open, where he lost to Bill
O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa.
He avenged that loss in the
semifinal match when he took
a 21-pin lead over O’Neill, the
No. 2 qualifier, with a string
of four strikes early in the
game and held on for a 215-212
victory when O’Neill failed to
double in the 10th frame.
In the first match, Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., missed a
3 pin in the fifth frame to give
Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla.,
the lead, but Allen followed the
missed spare with a string of
five strikes to pull away to a
234-213 victory.
In match two, Allen and
Russell were never more than
eight pins apart and Allen’s
spectacular conversion of the
2-8-10 split in the ninth frame
gave him a chance to win after
Russell failed to double in the
10th frame. Needing a double

Minier wins 19th
SASBA title at Tomball
Top 3 at Tomball Singles, (l to r) Rick Minier (champ), Mike
McHugh and Gordon Stuntz.
By Jim King
Rick Minier took the tournament lead the first game of the
Sunday morning qualifying
block and led the entire finals.
Entering the title match, he
had to stay within 50 pins of
Mike McHugh to hold off Mike,
who shot lights out on Sunday.
Gordon Stuntz and Troy
Schanne were close enough,
but needed a huge game to
pass the leaders. Gordon
started with a five bagger to
jump in front of Troy. Mike had
some tough carry early, but
after an early four bagger, Rick
lost his carry. Mike started
striking and matters weren’t
decided until Gordon had a
few spares…mathematically
eliminating him from 1st. Rick
split in the 10th, allowing Mike
to win their match 236-224,
but Gordon could still nab
2nd with a double in the 10th.
A split foiled his bid and he
wound up third, winning 235214. Thomas Young jumped to
4th and Troy held on to 5th…
his highest finish to date.
Thanks to Scott Holmes for
being a wonderful host. He
has transformed Tomball Bowl
into a bright, cheery bowling
center. He wants us back again
and will work with us to build
this tournament.

THOMPSON JR. INJURED IN
FREAK BASEBALL ACCIDENT
Two-time PBA Regional

in Thompson’s right arm broke
while he was throwing a pitch.
Thompson underwent a
four-hour surgical procedure to
repair the fracture. Thompson
wrote that his doctor assured
him he’ll fully recover from
the accident, but his status for
being healed in time to bowl in
PBA World Series of Bowling

this fall is unknown at this
point. In the meantime, friends
are rallying to raise $5,000
to help Thompson cover the
deductible in his insurance

Registration opens for 2015
Women’s Championships
and USBC Mixed
RENO, Nev. — Registration now is open for the 2015
United States Bowling Congress
Women's Championships and
the new USBC Mixed. Both
tournaments will be held at the
National Bowling Stadium from
April 10-June 30, 2015.
The 2015 USBC Women's
Championships will be the
96th edition of the event,
and format changes this year
created a lot of excitement
around the storied tournament.
The addition of The Mixed will
provide a great opportunity for
families and friends to travel
and bowl together.
There are great incentives
for teams that enter early, especially those thinking ahead and
planning to be in Las Vegas
in 2016 when the Women's
Championships and The Mixed
visit the new 60-lane facility at
South Point Hotel and Casino
for the first time.
All Women's Championships
teams that register and pay in
full for the 2015 event by Aug.
1, 2014, will receive $15 in
Championships Cash for each
team member upon checking
in at the National Bowling
Stadium next year. Full payment is $560 per team, which
includes team, doubles, singles
and all-events for all four
bowlers.
The Championships Cash
incentive will be extended to
all USBC Mixed teams that are
entered by a captain who also
has a team at the Women's
Championships.
Entering before the Aug. 1
early-bird deadline not only
will give teams the best choice
of dates and times for 2015,
it also will guarantee them
the same team date and time
for the 2016 tournaments. For
example, if a team chooses to
bowl on May 16, 2015, the 20th
Saturday of the year, they'll be
guaranteed a spot on May 14,
2016, the 20th Saturday of that
year.
The window for accepting
the guaranteed dates will be 60
days from the start of registration for the 2016 events.
The Women's Championships went to four-player teams
this year and also returned to
an all-scratch format with new
average-based divisions (four
in team and six for doubles,
singles and all-events).
The Mixed will utilize the
same format and divisions as
the Women's Championships
and give competitors the same
memorable championship experience, including the march
down the famed Center Aisle,
but with a more laid-back and
fun feel.
Squad times for the Women's Championships are 4 p.m.
and 7 p.m. for team and 8 a.m.,
noon and 7 p.m. for doubles
and singles. Squad times for
The Mixed will be 7 p.m. for
team (or 4 p.m. on days with
only one team squad) and
10 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 5
p.m. for doubles and singles
(note - doubles and singles are
separate events).
Online registration for both
the 2015 Women's Championships and USBC Mixed now is
underway. Dates and times will
be filled in real-time, and captains will be able to see what
dates and times are available
once they log in. *Teams that
enter The Mixed online will be
contacted directly to schedule
doubles and singles.
The online system also allows captains for the Women's
Championships to manage
their information and rosters,
set doubles pairings and make
additional payments all at their
own convenience.
For more information on the
Women's Championships, visit
BOWL.com/WomensChamp
and go to BOWL.com/Mixed
for more information on the
new Mixed tournament.

WEEKLY GLANCE
(For June 4 - June 10, 2014)
Defending team champion
falls short at 2014 USBC Open
Championships
The members of Lodge
Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla.,
rolled the highest score in
United States Bowling Congress
Open Championships history,
3,538, on their way to the
Regular Team title at the 2013
event, and they returned to the
National Bowling Stadium on
June 10 to put that title on the
line.
With the bar even higher
this year, they knew it would
take another record performance, but they fell short with
games of 1,155, 1,067 and 1,099
for a 3,321 total. Motion Plus
Lanes of Cudahy, Wis., leads
with a new-record 3,561.
Two-time USBC Open
Championships titlist Mitch
Jabczenski led the way for
Lodge Lanes Too this time with
a 707 series and was joined by
Vernon Peterson (694), USBC
WEEKLY GLANCE
(For June 7 – June 13, 2014)
Arizona bowler makes 50th
appearance at USBC Women’s
Championships
Lorraine Sandven of Tucson,
Ariz., became the sixth and
final competitor of the 2014
United States Bowling Congress
Women’s Championships to
reach 50 years of participation
on the tournament lanes.
The 78-year-old right-hander
started her tournament career
at the 1962 event in Phoenix
and received a standing ovation
June 13 at the Reno-Sparks
Convention Center as she
was awarded a plaque and
medallion to commemorate the
achievement.
“It was very surprising to
me because I didn’t realize it
was such a big deal until it
happened,” said Sandven, who
shot a 399 series in her milestone team event. “It’s a fun
thing. I wasn’t really expecting
all of this when I came up
here.”
Team lead changes hands at
RSCC
Bowling Divas 2 of Loveland, Colo., moved into the lead
in Sapphire Team at the 2014
USBC Women’s Championships
after posting team games of
660, 624 and 601 for a 1,885
total June 12. Outsiders of
Hueytown, Ala., previously
held the top spot with 1,856.
Logan Hastings led the way
for Bowling Divas 2 with a 531
Hall of Famer John Gaines
(660), Team USA member John
Janawicz (652) and Ron Dixon
(608).
“It just shows how hard it
is to win here,” said Gaines,
who made his 26th tournament
appearance. “We set a record
last year, and the same guys
came back and bowled 200
pins less on an equally-playable
condition. We definitely left
some pins out there, but that’s
going to happen. I tell the guys
that, but you can’t dwell on it.
You have to get all you can and
put yourself in good position
for tomorrow.”
Their companion team,
Lodge Lanes Kids, made a run
at the lead in Regular Team but
settled into third place after
games of 1,194, 1,156 and 1,177
for a 3,527 series, the fifthhighest team total in 111 years
of tournament history.
Jon Trzcinski led the way
for Lodge Lanes Kids with a
752 set and was followed by
Jeff Ussery (737), Shawn Lee
(694), Aaron Lorincz (683) and
Matt Gilman (661).
Arizona bowler joins father
in record books at USBC Open
Championships
Michael Tountas of Tucson,
Ariz., joined his father, USBC
Hall of Famer Pete Tountas, in
the record books at the USBC
series and was joined by Donna
Hastings (495), Dawn Evanich
(453) and Penny Jojola (406).
Teams in the Sapphire
Division are made up of bowlers with combined entering
averages of 574 and below.

former at the Division II level
as a freshman softball player
at Portland State University.
An outfielder, O’Keefe batted
.410 with a team-high 18 stolen
bases along with 15 outfield
assists. A four-time AllConference honoree in softball
at Oregon City High School,
O’Keefe was among a group of
players invited to attend the
USA trials for the 1996 Olympic
softball team.
Along with her athletic
success, O’Keefe has coached
a group of young female
bowlers over the last several
years, known by O’Keefe as
her “Chicklets”. She has also
attained a Silver-level coaching
status with the United States
Bowling Congress (USBC)
Coaching Certification
program.
“This is a job I’ve only
dreamed of being able to do,”
said Shannon O’Keefe. “I feel
confident that I can give back
to young student-athletes what
I have gotten out of the sport
of bowling. This is a great
opportunity to dive in to the
sport I love and help create
lifelong bowlers and give them
the insight and skills that will
make them successful not only
on the lanes, but in life as well.
I cannot wait to be a part of
this at McKendree. It’s a true
blessing.”
A well-respected coach at
every level of the game, Bryan
O’Keefe comes to McKendree
after serving as the assistant
coach and facility manager
for the International Training and Research Center for
Team USA Bowling. He has
coached men’s, women’s and
youth teams in world competition during that time. Under
O’Keefe’s tutelage, Team USA
members have brought home
more than 100 medals since
2010, including more than 20
gold medals.
Most recently, O’Keefe
was awarded Gold-level
coaching status through the
USBC Coaching Certification
program. He is one of just 28
active coaches throughout the
world – and the second-youngest – to reach this certification
level.
Prior to his experience with
Team USA, O’Keefe spent nearly
three years as a coaching
specialist for the USBC based in
Milwaukee, Wis. His coaching
career began at the collegiate
level, guiding the program
at the Rochester Institute of
Technology from 1997-99.
Collegiately, O’Keefe
attended the University of
Nebraska, where he helped lead
the Huskers to the 1996 USBC
Intercollegiate Team Championship. That capped a stellar
season for O’Keefe, where he
earned first-team All-America
honors and was runner-up for
national Bowling of the Year
accolades.
Along with his vast coaching experience, O’Keefe has
remained a competitive bowler,
and teamed with his wife to
win the PBA Luci Bonneau
Doubles championship in 2012.
“I have been fortunate to
coach and work with people
at all levels of Team USA,
but there’s something about
the younger bowlers that is
special,” said Bryan O’Keefe.
“They are raw, fresh and like
a sponge waiting to absorb
knowledge and learn everything they can about the game,
not just the tactical side but the
mental side as well. I cannot
wait to get started at McKendree. The bowling program
has the full backing of its
administration, and I really feel
that this will be an unbelievable experience. I loved being
a coach and a mentor, and I’m
ready to share what I have
learned with the McKendree
bowlers.”
McKendree senior-to-be A.J.
Johnson has had the experience of working with both
Bryan and Shannon O’Keefe
through his association with
Team USA. Johnson was a
Junior Team USA member in
2012, and is a current member
of Team USA. Johnson is
thrilled to have the O’Keefe’s
joining the McKendree
program.
“McKendree could not ask
for two better people to help
take our bowling program to
the next level,” said Johnson,
who earned Bowler of the Year
honors this spring at the collegiate level. “I’m so excited that
I get to spend my senior year
learning from Bryan and Shannon. Our program has been one
of the best in the nation over
the last several years and they
will only help make it stronger.
Bryan has been the coach I
have gone to with Team USA
to help improve my game. His
base of bowling knowledge is
incredible. In bowling with
Shannon on Team USA, she
shows a phenomenal insight to
the game and can make adjustments on the fly. They will
bring so many positive aspects
to our program and I can’t wait
to start working with them.”
Shannon and Bryan O’Keefe
replace Danielle Beloybraydich,
who resigned following the
2013-14 season as women’s
bowling coach and director
of bowling to pursue other
professional interests. Dennis
Knepper, who has led the
McKendree men’s bowling team
to consecutive appearances at
the USBC Intercollegiate Team
Championships, will continue
to serve as head coach for the
men’s squad.

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
[email protected]
In the third and final part
of our interview, Matt McNiel
talks about the lifestyle difference of attending college full
time in his late 20s as a graduate student against his experiences as an undergrad student
at Mankato State University in
Minnesota.
JPA: How is college life
different now than before?
MM: It is a bit different
when you are older. Partying,
drinking, staying out late,
going out every weekend, all
of those are really not in the
picture anymore. Now it’s an
occasional drink, and laid
back weekends playing golf
or spending time with a few
friends. You learn a lot about
yourself and your priorities
as you go through your 20’s. I
have learned that getting my
Masters’ degree is the most
important thing to me right
now, and that is getting all of
my focus and energy.
Back at Mankato State I was
just a suitcase student. I would
be there during the week but
then head home on weekends
to work the pro shop, bowl
league, and bowl tournaments.
I had no connection to the
school. At WSU I feel completely different. I love to wear
Shocker gear and support the
black and yellow. Watching the
basketball team was awesome,
plus you feel like your contributions really make a difference to the school and that is
a huge motivator. I cannot say
enough good things about this
program, the coaches, or the
support that it gets from the
community and the school.
WSU is the premier bowling
program in the country, and I
will argue until my last breath
that it is the best program
in collegiate bowling. Even
though personally I do not fit
exactly well with it, for any
developing or up and coming
bowler there is no other place
to be. If I ever have kids and
they bowl, they will come here
to WSU.
What McNiel failed to add
is his 4.0 GPA made the dean’s
list at Wichita State University.
You can now also call him
Matty McHonor Roll.

The 2109 in All-Events took
the sting out a little bit about
the dime that didn’t drop, although the last game in singles
was not the last nail in the
picture frame I was expecting,
either. Still would have needed
a 20-bagger that last game to
catch Anthony LaCaze, but
that’s ok. I’ll take my 15-bagger, 13-bagger and three opens
and be happy with hopefully a
top 50 All-Events finish.
Knowing we had PBA and
USBC Hall of Famer Wayne
Webb with the group certainly
put my mind at ease about
following the master strategy.
From a recently discovered
1980 Pro Bowlers Tour telecast
showing him throwing the first
back-to-back atomic messenger
strikes in the plastic ball era,
watching a legend at work
upclose was truly an education
of how it is done. Don’t worry,
he threw a few messenger
strikes in our nine games this
year, too.
And about Webb’s response
to that telecast mentioned
here a few months ago? He
had seen the YouTube clip,
but downplayed the claim he
was the first with back-to-back
messengers. Knowing the era,
he probably was, certainly
with atomic messenger strikes

(The ones where the head pin
looks like a blur coming off the
left kickback, taking out the
10-pin).
The first layout choice for
both USBC Open patterns was
a stronger core, with the pin
down and the center of gravity
and/or mass bias kicked out
toward the axis, even for fudgeknuckling raisins like me.
Having some success at this
event in the past with a similar
layout, it reads the pattern
where it should.
That key area these days
is at the end of the pattern in
what I call the ‘drop brush
zone’. It’s the portion downlane
at the end of the pattern where
the brush in the Kegel flex
lane machine is buffing, but
not applying any new oil. This
new technology application has
been used the last few years at
USBCs.
The goals have been the
same since my first year with
this group 2006, to choose the
right ball surfaces, grip layouts,
and get in the right part of the
lane. That plan has allowed us
to have runs at eagles in team,
doubles, and all-events in six of
those years.
Since we, like other groups,
regard the team eagle (what
the USBC title unofficially used
to be called, referring to the
orange scoreboard ornament
next to one’s name) as the holy
grail of eagles, yes, I was a
little surprised when we found
our doubles and singles, rather
than the team portion, would
be featured on a USBC live
stream. So my annual threehour tour into what I have
trademarked ‘unadulterated
adrenaline’ of the team event
would have a second act live
and online.
In my prior live-stream
commentating, I’ve rephrased
what the late Tom Snyder used
to say at the start of his late
night talk shows, “fire up the
colortinis as we watch and
listen to the pictures as they fly
around the world,” and off we
started.
A couple of the guys told
me privately they felt a little
nervous bowling in front of
cameras, not knowing who or
how many could be watching.
I said it wasn’t any different
than being watched by those in
the bleachers.
Commentators Matt Cannizzaro and Aaron Smith
have responded to comments
streamed with the YouTube
video in prior live-streams.
Since they also monitor
Facebook comments as well,
I thought it would be unique
to have viewers ask questions,
which I would answer during competition. We’ve seen
sideline reporters ask athletes
and coaches questions at
halftime and between quarters,
but not when the game clock
is running. To my surprise,
there were more than a few
questions submitted. Still
thinking like a broadcaster, I
went up to Matt and Aaron ‘in
the booth’ (all of seven steps to
the concourse) and answered
them. That didn’t take real
long, but thought advancing
the live-stream concept a little
further was worth the effort.
###############
May was certainly quite the
month for JPA, starting with
find of the ‘lost’ Charlie Tapp
interview, to being interviewed
on a couple of high-profile
online radio shows, then tossing a phone number of a score
a USBC live stream. Can’t wait
to see what’s next.
