 Biomass-to-Energy Focus
 AtmosClear is currently focused primarily on biomass-to-energy projects,
including biofuels and productive use of compost heat.
 Biofuels
 AtmosClear has been supporting the development of a biofuels business
in Nova Scotia.
 Compost Heat Exchange
 AtmosClear has been assisting Agrilab Technologies for 2 years to find
customers for its unique compost heat exchange technology, which – as

CASE STUDY Sunset View Farm March2013
2009 construction, 2010 start-up
Isobar System Cost Isolated - $80,000
Compost, mechanical room and storage is housed in a 130' x 55' Cover All
Manure and bedding from heifers and calfs are primary input
Also separated liquid manure from neighboring dairy farm
50 F well water is pre-heated by Isobar system

Heat value:
Compost
value:
42 foot isobar system with bulk tank, 12 isobars
1800 tons (3600 cy) per year input and approx. 1800 cy output
Average of 195,000 BTU/hr in Nov-Dec 2012, with water temp of 115 F
Peak yield 237,000 BTU/hr and peak temp 129 F (December 2012) Avg. yield calculated by Rrynk
150,000 to 200,000 Btu/hour in spring 2013
$9,200 / year fuel savings during initial operation
Additional savings through reduced manure handling and spreading costs, reduced purchase of
bedding (sawdust/shavings) 75% of composted solids are used as bedding in heifer barns, reducing
off-farm bedding purchases by approximately $80,000 to $100,000 per year

Summary DHCH may13
2005 construction, Jan. 2006 start-up
$480,000 - includes planning and construction (composting and storage buildings, new vertical mixer included)
Isobar system cost isolated - $60,000
CIG grant awarded $198,000; VT Agency of Ag. Provided $50,000; Acrolab provided $50,000 in-kind; balance
by DHCH
Two "Lester style" buildings were built for composting and for curing/storage
Farm staff labor (and Brian) were used whenever possible
Feedstock processed through a Knight-Kuhn vertical feed mixer ($33,000); approx. 15-30 tons/hr can be
processed and placed by 1 operator
Windrows remain on active floor for 10 to 25 weeks
Four FanTech blowers (10", 1/4 hp) located at vapor header inlet side

Process Value:
60 foot isobar system with bulk tank for hot water, 6 isobars
Approximately 1600 tons (3200 cy) of bedded manure per year, approx. 1500 cy finished product
200,000 BTU/hr (4 - 5 MBTU/day) Winter time yields; peak T of 146 F
average $10,000 savings/year in heating oil (2006-2013), simple payback of 6 years without including costsharing
Increased flexibility in nutrient management; additonal farm revenues from compost sales, now up to
$25K/year
Labor, equipment and operating cost savings calculated to save $19K/year from previous solid manure
handling and spreading practices

Initial Results at UNH
• Over the first year, the UNH refined how they mix their
compost feedstocks
• Loading time per batch decreased from 13 hours to less
than 8 hours
• After refining the compost recipe they were able to reach
160 degrees F for a few days (pathogen kill), and maintain
pile temperatures in the 140 – 150 degree F range for +1 mo.
• They are insulating the utility room to reduce heat loss from
the system itself
• Considering using single fan with damper controls vs
having fans at every header (less fan wear)

Use of composted manure as bedding
• “Composted horse manure used as recycled bedding has
become a staple around our farm… Composted bedding
smells great (mossy oak scent), decreases the amount of
dust, makes urine clump similar to kitty litter, reduces cost,
and it has beneficial effects for horses… Research has
documented relief for horses with chronic hives, skin
irritations, and respiratory conditions.” Susanne Currie,
Amani Acres, Brantford, Ontario
• “Use of Dried Manure Solids as Bedding for Dairy Cows and
how frequently should it be refreshed” Cornell Waste
Management Institute concluded that composting manure
before using it as bedding is one of the best ways to ensure
low pathogen count and a healthy herd. Dept of Crop & Soil
Sciences, Ithaca, NY

Using compost as bedding for horses and cows
• Use compost or separated manure solids as bedding,
instead of buying expensive straw or forest residues.
• Good bedding material:
– low in pathogens
– absorbent/insulating material to keep animals off cold wet concrete barn floors.
• Sunset View Farm is using a large percentage of their
finished compost for 75% of bedding material:
– great results in terms of herd health
– savings of up to $100,000 per year on bedding costs.
• Agrilab associate Conan Eaton reports pathogen count in
his barns is lower when using separated manure solids as
bedding compared to when he was buying tens of
thousands of dollars worth of sawdust each year.
