PANAMA CITY — The world
hushed last Saturday evening.
As I stood on the shore of
St. Andrew Bay and the sun
slipped behind the Hathaway
Bridge like a fluorescent
tomato, the incessant rumble
and exclamations of the
day began to fade.
Fish skipped on the
surface close by,
Undercurrents rippled
and children splashed
Tony
ankle-deep. Adults sat
simmons
on tailgates, speaking in
hushed voices, and a man
in a lighted wetsuit floated on columns of water,
“moon walked” and flipped.
It was a long walk back to my car, still parked in the
Gulf Coast State College lot near the Student Union,
where I had put it early that morning to offload books
and collectibles. I had spent the day at Panama City
Creative Con, which took over the Student Union and
Amelia Center Theatre for comic, costume, game, film,
art and other shenanigans.
It was a blast that I didn’t want to see end. From
swing dancers on stage, cosplayers cramming
corridors, artists working as you watched, and
children coloring masks — to vendors, authors, artists,
costumers, and vintage games and comics for sale.
Only the grinchiest of Grinches could look at the
smiles, the energy, hear the laughs — the obvious joy
so many experienced at being able to share creative
pursuits that thrill them — and still be unimpressed.
Attendance hit about 1,300 paid tickets, according
to organizer Jayson Kretzer, plus countless “visitors”
and complimentary guests. Jayson said he received
“very positive” responses from post-con surveys, as
well as numerous emails, texts and messages from
con-goers to thank him and his volunteer team for
putting the show together.
“People loved seeing (award-winning ‘Star Wars’
and comic artist) Dave Dorman and (GCSC alumnus
and movie actor) Michael Papajohn there,” Jayson
said.“The kids’ room was a huge success — especially
the ‘make your own costume’ part of it — and
everything went off without a hitch.”
Jayson even had a few people pledge
sponsorships for next year’s event, which he hopes to
expand to two full days.
“One of my favorite moments took place during
the Kids’ Costume Contest, where I saw multiple kids
donning outfits they created that day in our Kids’
Room,” Jayson said.“It really felt like we got it right this
time. We’ll keep improving of course, but we’re on a
good track now.”
I can hardly wait. I even started thinking about a
cosplay for next time. Consider that fair warning.
Peace.

I’d seen the polka band-of-sorts

(or at least new to me) was an
accordion player. Who doubled as
the sax player. Who I believe tripled
as the trumpet player. In any case,
he switched instruments as the
songs changed, but I was enthralled
with that accordion. It’s rare
enough you hear a live accordion
performance, but to hear a musician
jamming out AC/DC and doing Billy
Joel improv on one?
It was a first for me. I wanted to
ask him a bunch of questions during
break (Where did you get that? How
did you learn? Is it heavy? Did you
ever imagine yourself riffing at a beer
garden?), but the party moved on
before I had the chance.
My last artistic encounter was
while playing groupie to part of
the cast of this season’s “Ink Master”
on Spike TV. Local contestant Dave
Clarke, his friend and fellow Florida
contestant Chris Blinston, and Season
3 winner Joey Hamilton were all
going to be at an episode viewing
party at KC’s in Fort Walton Beach,
and I was NOT going to miss it.
Even if hubby wouldn’t go.
Even if my date canceled.
Even if it involved — shudder

In the end, it was worth it. I
summoned the courage to talk to
these guys while their faces were on
the big screen next to Dave Navarro’s,
and they turned out to be pretty cool.
All three are former military, and all
three are amazing artists.
They told me a little about
the show: where they slept (in a
warehouse), whether the people
who sign up to be tattooed are
crazy (some of them) and if Katie
McGowan is hilarious in real life (yes).
I took a picture with them, including

PANAMA CITY BEACH —
Grammy-winning recording artist
Nelly will host the “End of Summer
Pool-Side Beach Bash” at Club La
Vela on Thursday.
The largest nightclub in the
United States, Club La Vela recently
remodeled its tropical pool deck,
where the party will start when
the doors open at 7 p.m.; the show
begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25, and

com.
“Nelly is an amazing talent with a
ton of energy,” Neil Knight, director
of marketing for the club, said in a
news release.“We’re truly excited
to have him host our event on the
newly remodeled and redesigned
tropical pool deck, poolside under
the stars. This will be a night to
remember.”
Nelly is a “performer, singer,
songwriter, entrepreneur, investor
and occasional actor” from St. Louis,
Mo., who has sold more than 21
million albums in the U.S., Knight
said. Billboard magazine ranked
him as the No. 3 “Top Artist of the
Decade” in 2009. Nelly’s debut
album,“Country Grammar,” has sold
more than 8.4 million copies in the
U.S., and he won Grammy Awards in
2003 and 2004.
He currently stars in the hit reality
TV show “Nellyville,” and his latest
album,“M.O.,” is available online and
at all major retailers.
With the remodeling of the
outdoor venue and bringing a
recognized name to host the big
seasonal party, Knight said,“Club La
Vela continues to be the focal-point
of major entertainment for Panama
City Beach.”
Daytime, ages 15 and over are
welcome on Club La Vela’s pool
deck, and there is no ID required.
The pool deck opens at 10 a.m. and

LYNN HAVEN — “Avenue Q” is no “Sesame
Street.”
The similarities are intentional and obvious
on first glance, but these puppets are more
likely to discuss meth than math.
“If ‘Sesame Street’ were for 20-yearolds” is how Jason Blanks, the co-director
of Kaleidoscope Theatre’s new production,
described the musical comedy.
The opening production of Kaleidoscope’s
45th season,“Avenue Q” is a laugh-out-loud
puppet musical that tells the story of a recent
college grad who moves into a shabby New
York apartment way out on Avenue Q. The
fellow residents seem nice, but it’s clear this is
not your ordinary neighborhood. Even so, just
like neighborhoods everywhere, the residents
struggle to find jobs, dates and their everelusive purpose in life.
“He has to learn all about life and love and
responsibility — and STDs, and everything,”
Blanks said of the main character.
“Avenue Q” is a truly unique show, but just
because it features puppets doesn’t mean
it’s juvenile; it contains adult language and
sexual references, and is not recommended
for children. A long-running Broadway hit,
the musical has won the Tony Award for Best
Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
The cast of about 15 actors began
rehearsing with their puppets at the end of
June. Some puppets require one operator,
others need two. And then a few of the actors
have no puppet; as Blanks explained, some of
the cast “portray actual humans.”
‘AVENUE Q’
What: A puppet musical about
struggling to survive on the mean
streets (suggested for mature
audiences)
When: 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7-8, 14-15,

‘Avenue Q’ at NewsHerald.com
The other co-director, Doug Gilliland (who
portrayed Dr. Frank-N-Furter in last summer’s
production,“The Rocky Horror Show”),
has performed in “Avenue Q” in the past.
He worked with the local actors to ensure
they understood the process of presenting
puppets to an audience — as well as the
physical challenges of the work.
“This is incredibly uncomfortable for about
two weeks,” Gilliland said, demonstrating how
to hold a puppet so that it addresses other
characters (or the audience) effectively.“It’s
gonna kill you. ... This forearm will scream.”
A reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres
will take place after the opening night
performance Friday. Show times are 7:30 p.m.
Aug. 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22; and 2 p.m. Aug. 9,
16 and 23.
The other seven shows in Kaleidoscope
Theatre’s 45th season will be:
l “Wait Until Dark,” a suspense thriller
about a sinister con man and two ex-cons
who have traced a heroin-laced doll to
the apartment of a blind woman and her
husband;
l “Vanya and Sonia and Masha
and Spike,” a madcap comedy
about upper-class, middle-aged
sibling rivalry;
l “Inlaws, Outlaws and
Other People (That Should Be
Shot),” a Christmas comedic
gem about a collection of
quirky relatives and a couple
of bumbling, inept robbers;
l “Is He Dead?,” a 1898
comedy originally written by
Mark Twain and revised by
David Ives about an artist who
fakes his own death to achieve
fame and fortune;
l “Who’s in Bed with the
Butler?,” a farce full of uproarious
laughter;
l “The Whipping Man,”
written by local playwright,
Matthew Lopez, and winner
of the 2011 John Gassner
New Play Award, about
a wounded Confederate
soldier returning home to
find it in ruins; and,
l “Death by Design,” a mysterious stage
romp set during a weekend in an English
country manor in 1932.
Online ticketing and advanced seat
reservations, using all major credit cards, are
available either on the Kaleidoscope Theatre
Facebook page or KT-Online.org. Season
tickets or individual show tickets may be

PANAMA CITY — Girls
are going to rock the stage
Wednesday at the Marina
Civic Center, but the boys can
watch.
Colbie Caillat and Christina
Perri are headlining “The Girls
Night Out, Boys Can Come
Too Tour,” with support from
Rachel Platten.
“I’ve never done an allgirls show, but I’m a big fan
of Christina and Rachel. Me
and Christina were hanging
out yesterday. All her songs
have the same message
— embrace who you are.
Rachel’s ‘Fight Song’ is No.
1 on iTunes,” Caillat said by
phone earlier this summer.
On July 21, Caillat’s “Try”
was nominated for the 2015
MTV Video Music Awards
for Video with a Social
Message. The show airs Aug.
30. The gold-selling single
co-written by producer and
singer-songwriter Kenneth
“Babyface” Edmonds is
featured on her fourth fulllength album “Gypsy Heart,”
released in September. The
song became one of the
biggest performing songs
featured as iTunes “Single of
the Week,” the companion
video reached No. 1 on the
iTunes Video Chart, and the
song went Top 10 at Hot AC.
The video features Caillat
and girls of all ages wiping
off their makeup to embrace
natural beauty: “Put your
makeup on, get your nails
good at public speaking. It
really always has been hard
for me. ... We all have our
places, and I don’t need to
overcompensate,” Caillat said.
“I wish when I was younger, I
would have known it was OK
to be comfortable to be in my
own skin. I wasted so many
years of being unsure
of myself, thinking I was
weird or unattractive.”

PANAMA CITY BEACH
— Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam is
gearing up its biggest Labor
Day Weekend yet with three
days of country music Sept.
4-6 at Frank Brown Park in
Panama City Beach.
This year’s headliners
include Lady Antebellum,
Miranda Lambert and Keith
Urban.
“When I pick talent, the first
thing I look at is radio success,
what is biggest. I normally
look at country radio first,”
explained Pepsi Gulf Coast
Jam Executive Producer Rendy
Lovelady.“Country music is
the No. 1 selling music in the
world.”
This year, the third annual
event is moving from the
beach to a stage at Frank
Brown Park with VIP seating.
The demand for the VIP Pit
area was so overwhelming
that 100 additional VIP Pit
tickets were released July 24.
“Basically, we sold out of
the VIP and reopened it,”
Rendy said.“Last year, we had
37 private jets come in for the
festival. This year, we decided
to try to build something with
the caliber of that.”
The 3-Day VIP Pit ticket
prices are now at full price,
$429, and grant access to
the area in front of the main
headline stage, front of line
access to event grounds, front
of line shuttle access leaving
the grounds, as well as General
Admission ticket benefits
and Preferred Lodging ticket
viewing area.
“August is the big month
for buying tickets,” said
Lovelady, who added,“Labor
Day is the last hurrah. ... During
the day we want people to
go enjoy the city and beach,
then come to Country on the
Coast.”
On Aug. 3, 3-Day General
Admission ticket prices
increased to $149, where they
will hold for a couple of weeks
before continuing to rise up
to $209 the day of the show.
The tickets grant access to the
main headline stage, late-night
stage at Dave & Buster’s in Pier
Park and free shuttle access.
Military tickets will remain at
the original $109 price, and
ages 6 and younger are free.
“This year one thing that’s
new is the military tent. Go sit
in the cool air. We want the
military to feel special. This is
not a gimmick but from a very
sincere heart,” Lovelady said.
Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam, in its
third year, has continued to
grow in the number of highcaliber acts and crowds.
“We are 10 percent higher
on ticket sales than we
were last year at this point,”
Lovelady said Friday.
From nearly 13,000 the
first year to 19,000 last year,
he expects crowds to reach
23,000 to 25,000 this year.
“We pushed the fences all
the way back and set up to
have 25,000 people a night,”
said Lovelady, who added
vendor space has been filled.
“We have the typical fair foods
— corn dogs, elephant ears,
arts & crafts.”
The 2014 Pepsi Gulf Coast
Jam featured Blake Shelton,
Carrie Underwood and Dierks
Bentley.
“Miranda Lambert’s PR
agent called two weeks after
Blake came last year,” Lovelady
added.
“Last year, when we passed
15,000, it became a mega
festival right here in Panama
City Beach,” said Lovelady,
who divides his time between
the beach and Nashville.“It’s
the talent — triple headliners,
word of mouth and a big
Labor Day Weekend.”
Through surveys, Lovelady
has learned the average
concert-goers is a 40-year-old
female making about $90,000.
“Our trip truly has become a
moms’ trip, girls’ trip — coming
together, sitting together,
staying together, a perfect
Friday, August 7, 2015

: Countdown continues
scenario for a bunch of ladies’
trips last year.”
Last year’s aerial photos
from the concert show
perfectly created rows of
seating by guests who
brought lawn chairs.
“The females created rows
of their own, lined up. Only
females could do that,” he said
with a laugh.
Guests are not allowed to
bring in their own coolers, and
everyone is searched.
“Every person can bring a
chair and purse, and plastic
or empty water bottles to get
water out of the faucet. We
try to discourage people from
leaving,” said Lovelady, who
added,“No tailgating this year.
We have a strict policy. The
police have been amazing.”
But inside the gates,
concert-goers can partake in
a new happy hour from 2-5
p.m. daily.
“We cut a deal with
Budweiser and the first three
hours are buy-one/get-onefree during the festival,” said
Lovelady, who has arranged
for shuttle buses to take
people from Frank Brown Park
back to their condos.
“Last year, we had 15,000
in the park the last night
and everybody was out in
45 minutes with the police
department,” Lovelady said.
“We have 24 52-passenger
buses kind of like Disney
World with and each bus
assigned to a condo, and we
work with each other.”
During the past two years,
only two arrests have been
made at the event. Last year,
two males attempted to enter
the concert with bags of pills
and were arrested outside the
gate without incident.
“We want everyone to
feel safe, be able to roam
around,” Lovelady said.“The
festival is rain or shine. The
only thing that’s going to stop
it is a hurricane, and we have
weather insurance and would
refund money in that case. We
take care of our customers.”

PANAMA CITY BEACH — You might
think it’s easy to make friends when you’re
as beautiful as St. Andrews State Park — one
of the top five most-visited parks in Florida.
But then, no park can have too many
friends. That’s why the Friends of St. Andrews
State Park organization (from here on
referred to as “the Friends”) is looking for
new members.
Anne Ake, the current president of the
association and author of “Turning Turtles
in Tortuguero,” joined the Friends more
than 25 years ago and helped to launch the
Nature’s Gallery festival the park used to
host annually.
“I loved it when my kids were growing
up, and now my grandchildren are loving it,”
Ake said of the park.
During a recent hike along Gator Lake,
her 4-year-old granddaughter told Ake the
duckweed growing in the coastal lakes
was “ogre soup,” as eaten by the Disney
character “Shrek.”
“She said she would protect me,” Ake said.
The lakes and nature walks are just a
couple of attractions at St. Andrews State
Park, which covers more than 1,200 acres.
It opened in 1951 on 303 acres the state
purchased from the U.S. government
in 1947 for $2.50 per acre; the land was
previously the site of the St. Andrews Sound
Military Reservation (which had a gun
battery mounted on a high dune to protect
the pass from enemy intrusion during World
War II).
The park also features modern and
primitive camping areas, a playground, boat
launch, picnic pavilions, boardwalks over

the state treasury. That makes organizations like
the Friends all the more important.
A decade ago, the Friends helped to construct
a $400,000 interpretive center near the park
entrance. In months to come, as the turpentine
still on the grounds is removed to Wakulla State
Park, the Friends hope to begin construction of a
replacement pavilion of some sort.
Recent projects of the Friends include more
than 50 new picnic tables; two lawnmowers
provided for the campground; a new roof on
the beach boardwalk’s World War II gun mount
pavilion; a walking path; new membership
brochure, and more.
Planned projects include more landscaping;
sound equipment for campground movie
nights; playground equipment; a large pavilion
for wedding, reunions and other gatherings.
Future plans include constructing a trail/
boardwalk system around the central section of
the park, which is mostly wetland.
New boardwalks are going up on Shell Island,
and the Friends are building interpretive kiosks
with information about the barrier “island.” Ake
noted that any landscaping work is done with
native plants only, supplied by local nurseries.
The Friends help with events at the park, such
as hosting a Beach Cleanup at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 19,
and a “Walk in the Park” featuring nature walks
and talks, with lunch provided, 8:30 a.m. Oct. 3.
(Check our Calendar pages for details on these
events as the dates approach.)
The Iron Man triathlon will circle through the
park on Nov. 7, and Friends volunteers will help
with aid stations and other work.“We basically
do whatever needs to be done and then clean
up after it’s over,” Ake said.
Currently, members of the Friends are
participating on an advisory group put together
by the Florida Park Service, which is working on
updates to the parks’ management plans.
“We find the contribution of a focus group
to be very beneficial to both our long-term
visioning process and short-term planning for
state parks,” said Park Planner Daniel Alsentzer,
in a letter to meeting participants.“We look
forward to the opportunity to work with the
park’s stakeholders to generate new concepts
that will enhance public recreation at the park
while preserving the park’s resources for future
generations.”
At the initial meeting, Ake and others toured
the park by boat and tram, including the
mainland and Shell Island portions of the park;
they discussed park needs, learned about its
natural resources, and identified alternative
land uses.
“We discussed management issues and both
recreational and environmental needs of the
park,” Ake said.“One thing that seemed to be
pretty consistent in all discussions was that the
road needs to be fixed and should include a
bike path.”
The current narrow two-lane road through
the park is shared by pedestrians, bikes and
motor vehicles of all sizes.
Monthly meetings are on the second
Thursday of each month in the Visitor’s
Center (except during the summer break;
the next regular meeting is Sept. 10). Guests
and prospective members are welcome at all
meetings, which will generally include guest
speakers and refreshments.
Member benefits include free park entry
for all meetings, events and work projects. In
addition, each member is allowed free entry (for
one vehicle with up to eight people aboard) 12
times during the membership year. For details,

PANAMA CITY — Sax player Chris Godber
is “Starting Over” with his latest album.
“If you put R&B, smooth jazz and gospel
in a blender, this is the smoothie that would
come out,” said Godber, who is playing his new
blend in a free concert Saturday at Oaks by the
Bay Park in St. Andrews.“This one definitely
is a smooth jazz album for the smooth jazz
fan base. ... Smooth jazz is made up of a lot of
different styles anyway.”
With production courtesy of Caleb
Middleton, a musician at Carter’s Temple
First Born Church in Wewahitchka,“Starting Over”
includes 11 original tracks, plus a new rendition of
Etta James’“At Last.”
“Most of this is pieced together studio work
with musicians from around the country,” Godber
explained.“It’s just a more mature sound that
comes with experience and financial backing. ... I’ve
been working on these songs for four years and
had a Kickstarter developed from a fan base.”
His previous albums include “One Breath at a
Time” (2009),“My Offering” (2011) and “Where are
you CHRISTmas” (2013).

local guitarist Lowell Hopper, Brian Culbertson
guitarist Adam Hawley, and bass guitarist Eric
Lampley.
“This style is more upbeat with baseline guitar
riffs,” Godber added.
Godber met Hawley at Seabreeze Jazz Festival
in Pier Park in April, and played with him on stage
during the After-Party at Margaritaville. Though
Godber is not tied to the event, he did his own
solo show in the Pier Park courtyard during the
Seabreeze weekend.
Godber, who is “self-taught jazz,” has opened for
Tower of Power and Average White Band and plays
at other national jazz festivals such as Clearwater
Jazz Holiday.
He once was deemed by doctors unable
to play an instrument because of his severe
asthma. Godber, who is now a respiratory
therapist, picked up the sax in middle school
band at age 12 and has been playing ever
since.
In his latest album, he gives thanks to “My
Heavenly Father for the ability to start over,‘If
any man be in Christ he is a new creature...all
things are become new.’ (II Corinthians 5:17).”
For Saturday’s concert, Godber again has
partnered with Family of God Baptist Church
to collect school supplies for students in the
Macedonia Housing. The school supplies, from
pencils to folders, that are dropped off at the
concert will be distributed Aug. 15 at the complex.
“We did this last year and it wasn’t just school
supplies. Some people in the church who are
barbers gave free hair cuts. ... It’s just to love on
people, taking the church outside the walls,”
Godber said.
“Starting Over” officially releases on iTunes Aug.
10, but Godber will have CDs for sale ($15 each/$20
for two) at the concert.
“Musically it’s starting over, but even for me as
a person,” said Godber, 30, whose daughter, Lana
Grace, turned 1 in April.“I had a little girl and that
changed my perspective on everything.”

On June 8, 1917, the church building was moved from the location at the corner of Drake Street and Lorraine
Ave. (now 14th St.) to 14th Street and Bayview Ave. In 1936, Sunday School classrooms were added to the
original church building.
A Boy Scout building was constructed in 1945.Two lots on Beck Ave. were purchased in 1946 and the
present sanctuary was built on these lots
in 1949. The current Educational Building
was completed in 1957. The original

Bay County’s oldest church was organized as the First Presbyterian Church of St. Andrews on September
13, 1886 at the home of Mr. Hiram M. Mapes. The church was comprised of 16 members and the first pastor
was E. H. Post, grandfather of Richard Post, a long-time teacher at Jinks Junior High School. On January 15,
1888, members met to elect a Board of Trustees. At this time steps were taken to raise funds with which to
purchase a lot and construct a church building. This work was completed on July 22, 1888. The original bell,
now a landmark, is still used today ringing out “come-to-church” to announce that Sunday worship service
is about to begin.

“I’ve heard stories about you,
but they can’t all be true.” It’s
understandable for someone within
the “Mission: Impossible” universe
to say this, skeptical of the many
adventures of Ethan Hunt. In what
may be the most consistently exciting
franchise ever, he has been thrown
onto a moving train, leapt between
two skyscrapers, and scaled the tallest
building the world, and those are only
a few of his escapades.
With “Rogue Nation,” the highoctane stunts-extravaganza continues
with operatic skill and thrill. What
should be just another generic spy
film is made cheer-worthy through
crowd-pleasing action and loads of
slick fun.
Much of the success rests on
Tom Cruise’s shoulders. He is easily
unnecessarily objectifying the one
woman, would’ve helped with the
length.
Mostly, though, the visuals, humor,
stunts and brilliantly iconic music
kept me smiling throughout. Your
mission, if you choose to accept it: See
“Rogue Nation.”

The “Mission: Impossible” machine
delivers as much consistent fun as
any franchise today. It’s everything
the “Fast and Furious” franchise tries
to be.
Each episode in the action serial
has been essentially the same. Each
has Tom Cruise. Each has the same
narrative beats (internal strife, spy
stuff, mystery elements, more spy
stuff). Each has a mission that turns
out to be more improbable than
impossible.
The difference has been that

he nonetheless brings his own style
to the movie.
The dialogue in this fifth “Mission:
Impossible” film is the sharpest of the
series, and it’s no surprise it comes
from the Oscar-winning writer of “The
Usual Suspects.” The visuals are crisp
too, with some of the most assured
action sequences of the year.
“Rogue Nation” is great, though,
mostly because of the mainstay. This
is Cruise’s movie. His commitment to
his stunts is unparalleled in today’s
Hollywood, his charisma oozes
confidence and wit, and he embodies
“Mission: Impossible’s” Ethan Hunt
far more than Sean Connery, Roger
Moore, or Daniel Craig ever embodied
James Bond.
McQuarrie and supporting actors
Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner
and Simon Pegg are great, but this
is Cruise’s movie and he owns every
scene.

danger these people are in.
Though “Rogue Nation” may not
have the single greatest combat scene
in the franchise, it gives you the most
bang-for-your-buck, rarely letting up
long enough to let you catch your
breath. When it does slow down, the
tension is often cut beautifully by the
cast, whose comedic beats between
the excitement bring a nice respite.
Otherwise, when the movie quiets

not-intended-as-comedy dialogue
drag a bit. Some mild cutting of
superfluous scenes, specifically when
