The decommissioning of STORIS need not be
the last chapter for this nationally significant
vessel, listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. Her robust design with heavy
frames and thick plating allowed STORIS to
break ice and sail heavy seas. Her historic
accomplishments, stout construction and good
physical condition make STORIS an excellent
candidate for a museum ship.
Large numbers of active duty and retired
USCG personnel live in Juneau and will help
care for STORIS. The Juneau Docks & Harbors
Board has been cooperative and enthusiastic
about integrating the Storis Museum into the
downtown waterfront and harbor development
plans. Finally, the Storis Museum preservation
plans enjoy the active support of the entire
Alaska Congressional delegation and the State
of Alaska Historic Preservation Office. We
invite you to join us, too!

The history of
CGC STORIS
STORIS proudly
served the U.S.
Coast Guard for
almost 65 years,
the majority of
her
career
stationed
in
Alaska providing
law enforcement, search and rescue, icebreaking,
military support and humanitarian medical and
disaster relief services. Commissioned in 1942,
STORIS proudly served on the critical Greenland
patrols during WWII.
STORIS transferred to Juneau in 1948 where,
among other tasks, the ship and her crews joined the
Bering Sea Patrol, providing critical medical and
judicial services to outlying native villages.
Departing Seattle on July 1, 1957, STORIS led two
smaller cutters on a historic 67-day transit of the icy
Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic.
When STORIS emerged at the east end of the
Passage near Greenland where she patrolled during
WWII, she became the first American vessel to have
completely circumnavigated North America.
Soon after the transit, STORIS transferred to
Kodiak, her home port for the remainder of her
career. Converted to a medium-endurance cutter in
1972, the ship and her crews were involved with
many
high-profile
fisheries
enforcement
apprehensions in Alaskan waters. Over her career,
STORIS and her crews earned an impressive
collection of awards and honors for service
excellence. From October 1991 until her retirement,
STORIS proudly wore her gold "38" hull number –
an honor reserved for the “Queen of the Fleet,” the
oldest commissioned cutter. STORIS was
decommissioned Feb. 8, 2007. She was listed as
nationally significant on the National Register of
Historic Places on Dec. 31, 2012.

STORIS IN MEMORIAM
During the decommissioning of CGC STORIS
on Feb. 8, 2007, USCG RADM Arthur E.
Brooks summarized the spirit and legacy of
CGC STORIS and the Honor, Respect and
Devotion to Duty of the estimated 3,000 men
and women who served aboard STORIS over
her 64 years and five months of service:
“This ‘Queen’ has literally carved a path,
blazed the trail and marked the waterways
that ensured the safe transit of every ship
that followed. It’s obvious; this tough old
ship has the tenacity and determination - the very heart and soul - - of those who built
her, those members of the greatest
generation. Throughout the years, the crew
members at her helm have demonstrated
extraordinary courage and fortitude saving
lives, protecting living marine resources and
protecting shipping from the hazards of the
icy Arctic. For you see, while STORIS is this
hearty ship, the real STORIS is every Coast
Guard crewmember, every crew, that ever
sweated—and toiled—and laughed— and
dreamed—aboard her. These are the lives.
These are the Coast Guard heroes, who
breathed life—and passion—and purpose—
into STORIS.”
The families of these Coast Guard heroes also
deserve recognition for supporting the ship and
the crew, danger of the job and enduring the
The STORIS IN MEMORIAM plaque is an
opportunity to honor for perpetuity these Coast
Guard heroes while helping to fund the
preservation of the Mighty STORIS, the
“Galloping Ghost of the Alaskan Coast” and
“Queen of the Fleet.”

The STORIS Museum has established this

maritime activities in Alaskan waters. This
can be either a direct connection to maritime

who has such a history.
A donation can be made “In Memory, In
Loving Memory, or In Honor” of anyone. The
commemorative inscription will be displayed
forever on a special brass plate affixed to a
larger, mahogany display plaque that will be
located aboard the STORIS Museum in the
crossdeck passageway aft of the CO’s cabin.
