HISTORY & CULTURE
When Henry Hudson sailed his ship “Half Moon” up the Hudson River in 1609, he was the first in a long list of remarkable travelers to
Orange County. These influential women and men determined the early history and culture of America. The Revolutionary War was
fought here, commanded by General George Washington. In the 1800’s, The Hudson River School of Painters was the first art movement
in the United States, and in the 1900’s the environmental movement started in Orange County as residents fought to preserve Storm King
Mountain. Explore a place so rich in history it has America’s first Registered National Historic Landmark.

our county is open space, and there’s
always the Hudson River for kayaking or
cruising and the Delaware for rafting. A
countryside filled with scenic lakes,
dozens of trails like the Appalachian that
crosses through Bear Mountain, and quiet
preserves for leisurely strolls, bird
watching, and nature study.

Did I check every vat? Did I leave the stove on?
