Swann trailed Kevin Pietersen by 14 points after the Pakistan series, but his 16 wickets against Sri Lanka saw him finish 12 points ahead of secondplaced Pietersen. Returns of 4-75 and 6-106 in the second Test at Colombo staved off the formidable challenge of Pietersen, who also enjoyed his best Test of the winter with 193 runs including a breath-taking 151 off 165 balls in the first innings. Swann's victory was his third title after wins in 2010 and 2009-10. He also finished top of the Test FTI MVP after taking 29 wickets and scoring 147 runs. Having scored just 100 runs from his first eight Test innings of the campaign, Pietersen’s second spot equals his previous best finishes in 2008-09 and 2007-08. Earlier in the winter he won the t20 FTI MVP. Alastair Cook, who won the Summer FTI MVP as well as the Test FTI MVP in 2010-11, finished third overall but a huge 42 points behind Pietersen. The England one-day captain, who topped the ODI FTI MVP, scored 157 runs against Sri Lanka including 94 and 49 not out in the second Test. James Anderson has been England's most consistent Test cricketer since the inception of the FTI MVP. The FTI MVP rankings were introduced in 2007 with the aim of identifying the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Unlike other rankings they combine calculations from all domestic competitions and across all aspects of a player’s game. However they can also be broken down to focus on individual competitions and specific playing roles. The formula behind the rankings was devised by PCA members, who took into account their own match experiences and the relative achievements of bowlers, batsmen, wicket-keepers and fielders. By combining all those disciplines the FTI MVP rankings add up to the newest benchmark in the game. The FTI MVP rankings are powered by data from PA Sport, the global leader in sports information. They are updated following the conclusion of every game from the county circuit. The FTI MVP concept has now become integrated into the fabric of English cricket. Background > A need for more relevance to all aspects of the game. > A need to reflect a player’s total contribution to the team. So we set out to devise a system that rewards players who are skilled in multiple disciplines – taking wickets, scoring runs, holding catches and effecting run-outs. The Design Challenge During the 2006 season the PCA’s Cricket Committee – including a cross section of players - carried out the following steps: > Conducted an overview of existing player data. > Designed the MVP concept and identified the objectives. > Conducted an end-of-season review, focusing on comparing performances. Current and former players from the domestic game and the international arena were involved every step of the way to ensure the end result truly reflected the views of the people in the thick of the action. The Formula The FTI MVP rankings are based on a cumulative points system that rewards players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held.
