Expanding
Our Reach
We hosted visitors ranging from
USDA Administrator Dave Shipman
and Vermont Secretary of Agriculture
Chuck Ross to groups from China,
Russia, and Switzerland this year.
Nationally and globally, we are a
model for what a strong community
food system can look like!
We sustainably manage 350 acres of floodplain in the heart of
Burlington, Vermont, dedicated to agriculture, recreation and
conservation. In 2012, 10 Intervale farms provided our community
with over $1.3 million in delicious fresh food.
A Swiss delegation was
interested in our innovative
Intervale Food Hub model
Our Intervale Conservation Nursery grew, planted and donated over
30,000 trees and shrubs to restore Vermont’s native landscape. That’s
about 60 football fields of protected riverbank!
Growing Farm Businesses
Meet Maggie Donin,
our Beginning
Farmer Specialist.
She joined our
staff in 2012 to
expand our Farms
Program, recruit
new Intervale
farmers and
provide support to
beginning farmers across the state. We’re
excited to welcome two incubator farms to
the Intervale community in Spring 2013.
From family dairy farms to pasture-raised meat producers and New
American vegetable farms, we worked with over 100 aspiring and established
farmers in 2012, helping them strengthen and develop their businesses.
One of our favorite success stories is that of the DeVos family of Kimball
Brook Farm, whom Travis worked with in 2007 to plan their expansion
from a family-run organic dairy to one of the state’s largest organic milk
bottling operations. Today, their products are distributed to grocery stores
throughout Northern New England.
Getting Good Food to More Vermonters
Taken on December 3, this photo (right) shows S.D. Ireland
pouring and preparing the barn’s foundation.
The barn’s first
tenant, the Intervale
Food Hub, helped 40 farms reach 1,000 members
at 30 workplace drop-off points in Chittenden
County, including public schools and colleges.
This innovative business returned about $300,000
directly to Vermont farmers.
Fresh, Sustainable Food for All
Ensuring Access...
We’ve pushed the limits of food
access this year: whether to lowincome families, professionals, or
college students, we’re working hard
to make sure that the best local food
is available to anyone who wants it.
Over 5,000 people celebrated
local food, farms and family
during Summervale 2012.
... With Our Community
UVM student, Blair Borax, is thrilled to get farm-fresh, healthy food
delivered right to campus through the Intervale Food Hub.
We are lucky to have a supportive community whose generosity
and kindness make our work possible.
... While Reducing Waste
City Market, Onion River Coop hosted an “Intervale hearts”
initiative during Valentine’s Day
week 2012 that raised over $3,000!
Through Intervale Gleaning and Food Rescue, we delivered Free Food
Shares containing produce gleaned from Intervale farms, and harvested,
packed and distributed by volunteers, to over 50 households and 11
social service agencies in Chittenden County for 12 weeks.
Sue Chayer and Marianne Balczuk,
Gardener’s Supply Company
employees and Intervale Gleaning
and Food Rescue volunteers,
helped distribute Free Food Shares
each week.

TODD TAYLOR
You helped us rebuild the Calkins Dairy Barn so that more
Vermonters can access the best food in the world! The rebuilt
barn also completes our historic homestead and honors the
heritage of Burlington’s last working dairy farm.
