Filly from Tech will also be auctioned
one, a horse person is a horse
person. It’s a big family.”
In an effort to memorialize
White and Hilscher, Cira,
along with parents Richard
and Donna, decided to donate
an embryo from the family’s
mare, Bella Mia, to Virginia
Tech.
“Our initial donation was
going to be just an embryo,
but they didn’t have an open
mare so we agreed to let Mia
carry the foal,” Cira explained.
Mia, as the Giuntis call her,
was bred with the Virginia
Tech stallion Royal Appearance. The college donated the
stallion services, and Woodside Equine Clinic and Reproductive Center facilitated the
insemination at a reduced
cost; Brenda and George Nice
of Walnut Acres in James City
County let the Giuntis use
their stables, and the Giuntis
agreed to care for Mia through
the pregnancy and the resulting foal until it is weaned.
“It was a family discussion.
We felt we had to do something,” Donna said. “We want
the families to know that people who don’t know them personally truly care about them
and want their loved ones to
be remembered.”
At 9:45 p.m. on May 16, Mia
gave birth to Riley, an
85-pound colt.
“He was a talker. He was
born talking. Whinnying and
carrying on. Very vocal,” said
Cira.
Cira has grown attached to
the colt, the first she’s bred
and raised from birth, but
that won’t stop her from donating Riley to Virginia Tech
in October.
“It’s a mixed feeling. Anybody who’s going to spend the
money on him is going to take
extremely good care of him,
but I’ll be sad. I know he’s
going to do something good so
it’s worthwhile in the end. I’ll
check in on him every once
and a while.”
Riley will be auctioned Oct.
31 at the Hokie Harvest Sale,
Virginia Tech’s annual fall
sale. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the equine
science program, as well as
memorial funds that have
been set up in the names of
Nicole Regina White and Emily Jane Hilscher.
Mike and Tricia White,
Nicole White’s parents, were
appreciative of Cira’s efforts.
“It’s a wonderful thing our
community is doing to continue the legacy of our daughter,” Mike White said. “I was
really happy to hear that [Cira] remembered our daughter
and decided to honor her in
this way.”
A yearling filly, Remember
VT, will also be auctioned at
the sale. Remember VT, who
was born at Virginia Tech’s
Smithfield Horse Center in
Blacksburg on the day of the
shootings, was also sired by
Royal Appearance and is Riley’s half-sister.
Before he can be auctioned,
Riley will have to be inspected and registered. At a
recent show in Lexington, he
finished an impressive fourth
in his class. Eventually, Riley
could become a sport horse —
a competitor in equestrian
sporting events.
“If he does well, bidders
BASKETBALL
will know he’s worth the minimum bid,” Cira said.
The minimum bid for Riley
is $10,000, but Cira is hopeful
that he’ll raise $20,000 to
$30,000 based on the nature of
the cause as well as his impressive bloodline. Riley is
descended from top show
horses, according to Cira.
“Ideally, the auction winner
will pay the money and donate him back to Virginia
Tech,” Donna said.
