President’s Message
Wow – we are almost half way through our NAWIC year and there is so much going on. Our annual Block Kids event was held on Saturday, February 6. Once
again we held the event at Emerald Park, planned and facilitated in partnership
with both River Road Parks and Recreation, and the Science Factory. This event is
one that many in the community have come to look forward to every year, both
as participants and as industry judges. Thanks to all who volunteered to help out
whether to set up, take down and/or be a judge.
Just a few weeks later, the Eugene chapter is hosting the annual Oregon Coast
Retreat. This event, hosted by one of the Oregon chapters of NAWIC each year, is
a casual weekend, spent on the Oregon coast, enjoying each other’s company,
learning a few industry-related items, and sharing time with our friends. We hope
you plan on attending, registration is just $60 through February 19th, and rooms
at the Adobe can be reserved for $110/$90 per night, under the NAWIC room
block, available through February 8th. Contact Robin Langkamp for more details
at: [email protected].
Not long after we return from the beach, our annual WIC Week will commence!
The week, spent highlighting women as a visible component of the construction
industry via many different activities or events, will run from March 6 – 12. Monday night will be our annual Food For Lane County work night at their facility on
Bailey Hill Road just before 6:00 pm. The following night, we will be making a return visit/tour of the new Serenity Lane Facility, starting at 5:30 pm. We will then
have our monthly meeting the following evening, Wednesday, March 9, at the
Holiday Inn, Springfield. We continue to work on other events to fill out the
week, so stay tuned via our website or our monthly newsletter postings.
I look forward to seeing each of you at our exciting site tour of the new University
of Oregon Jane Sanders Softball Stadium on Wednesday, February 10. This will be
our monthly meeting, in lieu of our typical evening dinner meeting. More information to come via email soon. Enjoy the month of February, and all the “love” it
brings!

January Meeting Recap
LCC Volunteer Recruitment
Janet conducted our business meeting and talked about our
upcoming events for the year. We had several guest attend.
Lisa Bohannan, Career Technical Education Student Advisor,
with LCC Women’s Center attended and brought three of her
students.; Sarah Paige, Amy Johnston, and KinniRae Vasquez.
Our other guest was Laura Rex with Layton Construction.
It’s that time of year when LCC is recruiting readers for their
scholarship applications. If you have done this before, you
know it is such a great way to get to know the students we
serve. If you haven't done it before, I invite you to join us this
year. Trainings are in mid-March, and you have about a
month to review applications, and you can do it in your pajamas at home! There is a significant time commitment, and we
estimate about 25-30 hours of concentrated work for you during that month. Please bear that in mind when signing up but if you can commit that time, you will find it so rewarding. Please do pass this on to anyone you think may be interested in this volunteer opportunity (friends, family, coworkers).
We leaned about Lisa’s students background and goals.
Sarah has been out of school for 35 years she wants to get
into the engineering field. She is currently taking math
classes. Amy is in her 3rd term at LCC and is interested in a
plumbing apprenticeship or going into human services. She
retuned to school after being out for 23 years. KinniRae is
interested in engineering and is also taking math classes. .
KinniRae, Sarah and Amy volunteered to help out at Block
Kids as judges. We enjoyed having them at our meeting and
talking to them.
Laura Rex is the Project Assistant for the new McKenzie Willamette Hospital renovation project. She just moved here for
this three year project. Laura also volunteered to help out at
Block Kids and will also have one of the project managers give
a presentation on the hospital project. We look forward to
getting to know her better.
Please see information form. Contact our scholarship coordinator, Barbara Enright, and contact her asap for more information and to get set up. She can be reached at 541-463-5226 or

Block Kids Competition was held on Feb.
6th at Emerald Park in Eugene. We had
72 children participate in the event.
Our winner was a 4th grader, Hiram,
from Eugene. He build a solar electrical grid and Hoover Dam. He said his
project will produce the same energy
as Hoover Dam and it will be clean
energy and will service everyone from
California to Las Vegas. He wants to
be a structural engineer when he
grows up.
A big thank you to our judges from
the construction industry, our
NAWIC volunteers, The Science Factory, and Emerald Park. We could not
do this without all your help.

CONSTRUCTION FIRMS ADD 45,000 WORKERS IN DECEMBER
AS SECTOR’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HITS 7.5 PERCENT
January 8, 2016
Construction Employment at Highest Level since January 2009 As Most Firms Predict They Will Add Workers in
2016, Expect Most Market Segments to Expand
Construction firms added 45,000 workers in December as the industry’s unemployment rate declined to 7.5 percent
from 8.3 a year ago, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that the robust job gains come as a new industry outlook shows most firms expect to expand their headcount in 2016 amid growing private and public sector demand.
“Based on what most contractors have reported, the robust hiring the industry has experienced during the past few
months should continue through 2016,” said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. “While contractors
continue to be worried about labor shortages, regulatory burdens and health care costs, most expect growing demand for many types of construction will allow them to expand this year.”
Construction employment totaled 6,538,000 in December, the most since January 2009, and is up by 263,000 jobs
compared to a year ago, a 4.2 percent increase. Residential construction increased by 23,100 in December and by
137,200, or 5.7 percent, compared to a year ago. Nonresidential construction employers added 21,200 jobs for the
month and 125,400 jobs compared to last December, a 3.2 percent increase.
Within the nonresidential construction sector, nonresidential specialty trade contractors added 11,300 employees in
December and 95,300 for the year. Nonresidential building contractors added 5,100 jobs for the month and 9,900
jobs since December 2014. And heavy and civil engineering construction firms added 4,800 jobs in December and
20,200 jobs during the past year.
December marks the third month of large increases in construction employment, the economist noted. The growth in
construction employment comes as 71 percent of firms report they plan to expand their total headcount in 2016, according to the association's 2016 Construction Hiring and Business Outlook. Simonson noted that more contractors
report they expect spending on most market public and private segments to expand this year than contract.
Association officials noted that most contractors remain concerned about shortages of available construction workers, noting that 70 percent of contractors report having a hard time finding workers. They urged federal, state and
local officials to act on measures outlined in the association's Workforce Development Plan to support new career
and technical education programs. In particular, they called on Congress to enact needed reforms and increase funding for the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.
"With the construction industry expanding at rates not seen since the downturn, public officials need to make sure we
are encouraging and preparing students to consider high-paying careers in construction,” said Stephen E. Sandherr,
the association’s chief executive officer. “As our Outlook makes clear, the industry is likely to continue expanding this
year, as long as there are enough workers available for firms to hire.

Conflict of Interest
Lane Community College Foundation believes that it is important for scholarship readers to avoid the appearance of a conflict
of interest while reviewing applications and conducting any other selection committee business. Readers must be able to
score and rate applicants without potential or perceived influence caused by a conflict of interest. Readers must evaluate the
eligibility of applicants without bias and make their ratings based on the established objective criteria.
A conflict of interest can occur when an action of a reader or donor results in a direct financial benefit to a person closely
related to the donor or reader. A conflict of interest may also occur if a reader scores the applicant without considering
objective criteria for the scholarship.
1.
No readers or members of the scholarship selection committee shall be eligible to apply for assistance from the
scholarship fund.
2.
If a family member of a reader or member of the scholarship selection committee has applied for assistance,
that person will declare a conflict of interest and will not participate during the review and selection process.
(“Family member” is defined as spouse, parent, child, stepchild, adopted child, niece, nephew, grandchild, step
grandchild, or in-law.)
3.
Current Lane students are not eligible to review scholarships.
