The Abu Dhabi-based airline flew more than six million passengers in 2008, a 34 per cent jump on 2007. The growth during 2008, Etihad’s fifth year of operations, saw passenger numbers total 6,021,931 and the average seat factor rise from 68 per cent to 75 per cent. The airline also took delivery of nine new aircraft boosting its fleet to a total of 42. Currently, Etihad flies to destinations across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and the Middle East with six new destinations joining the network in 2008. The addition of Beijing, Minsk, Chennai, Kozhikode, Almaty and Moscow bring Etihad’s network to an impressive 50 destinations. New destinations already confirmed for 2009 include Melbourne and Athens. The airline’s record order of US $43 billion at the Farnborough International Airshow for up to 205 Airbus and Boeing aircraft reflects the strength and pace of economic growth in Abu Dhabi and the integral role Etihad will play in the Emirate’s future. Etihad’s fleet order also mirrors the Middle East’s increasing emergence as a new focal point of global aviation and a natural air bridge between East and West. As the UAE’s national airline, Etihad Airways encourages and actively promotes the recruitment and career development of UAE nationals within a multi-cultural workforce that now includes 116 nationalities. The airline’s Emiratisation scheme now boasts more than 120 participants across the cadet pilot, management trainee and technical engineering programmes. Sports sponsorship continues to play a major part in Etihad’s marketing strategy. Etihad strengthened its sponsorship programme in 2008 with announcements of major deals with the Ferrari Formula 1 team, the All Ireland Hurling Championships and the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which starts in 2009. Grand Prix prize Abu Dhabi rocks A walk on the wildlife side The eyes of the world will be on Abu Dhabi in November 2009 when the Formula 1TM Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix makes its debut in the Emirate. The elite of the motor racing world - along with thousands of tourists from all corners of the globe - will descend upon Abu Dhabi for the inaugural event on Yas Island. Construction of the Yas Marina Circuit is at an advanced stage and is on schedule for the showpiece event which will be staged on 1 November, the final race in the 2009 FIA Formula 1™ World Championship calendar. Yas Island is a natural 2,550 hectare island located to the east of Abu Dhabi island. Along with the world-class racetrack, Yas Island will feature a Ferrari theme park, signature hotels and golf courses. Yas Marina Circuit is a collaboration between several different parties and is managed by Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management (ADMM). The original plan was evolved by creative mastermind Philippe Gurdjian (CEO, ADMM) in conjunction with ALDAR, the builders of the track, and renowned architects Tilke GmbH. George Michael wowed thousands of adoring fans in December at his last ever concert at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium. The historic event was testament to Abu Dhabi’s increasing prominence as the leading hub for culture and entertainment in the Middle East. For the first time, one of the UAE’s most beautiful nature sanctuaries is easily accessible to the public following the opening of the Desert Islands Resort and Spa (below). Originally conceived as a wildlife reserve to ensure the survival of Arabia’s most endangered species, Sir Bani Yas Island is one of the great legacies of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President and founder of the UAE. Today it hosts the Arabian Wildlife Park which spans three quarters of this 87 square kilometre island and is home to a variety of free roaming animals including one of the world’s largest herds - more than 400 - of Arabian Oryx. On the waterfront Built to showcase Arabian architecture and reflect traditional Arab hospitality the newly opened Qaryat Al Beri Souk is the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. The souk, which is set on two levels, is a fusion of Arabian architecture with a Venetian theme. Water canals meander through the souk and nearby properties with traditional Arabic “abra” boats to ferry guests from the adjacent Shangri-La Hotel. Several well-known restaurants and coffee shops have al fresco dining terraces that overlook the Grand Mosque. US $210 million secured to finance new aircraft Record growth tops impressive year Etihad agreed aircraft financing facilities worth more than US $210 million in December 2008. The deal will see two new Airbus A340-600 widebody aircraft join Etihad’s expanding fleet. Etihad Airways flew more than six million passengers in 2008, a 34 per cent jump on 2007. The twelve month period saw passenger numbers total 6,021,931 and the average seat factor rise from 68 per cent to 75 per cent. Etihad currently has five A340-600s in service, with an additional two aircraft to be added in 2009. The premium experience starts curb-side where first and business class customers disembark from their limousine taxi and enter a dedicated entrance to the terminal. The new route brought to 50 the number of destinations served by the airline. Etihad is set to boost its flying programme to Europe with the addition of two major new routes to Athens in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey. The airline has collected an array of prestigious accolades in recent months to add to its growing trophy cabinet. Etihad Crystal Cargo Entertainment in the air Etihad is justifiably proud of its award-winning in-flight entertainment and offers more than 600 hours of movies, television shows and music on its audio-video-ondemand (AVOD) system. This is continually increased and enhanced by Etihad’s product team and currently includes 76 full feature movies and 132 television episodes in more than ten languages. Children flying with Etihad can enjoy a range of in-flight entertainment programmes and interactive games specially designed for kids, in addition to toys and games. Etihad also offers very popular duty-free shopping to customers in all cabins. Etihad’s in-flight duty free range includes an exclusive selection of products from perfumes and jewellery to watches, cosmetics and gifts for children. Etihad’s cargo division, Crystal Cargo, enjoyed a successful 2008 with the number of cargo shipments handled up more than 19 per cent compared to 2007. In the 12 month period, the amount of cargo tonnes transported increased more than 16 per cent to 202,430 tonnes. The record for maximum uplift on a single day was 1,054 tonnes on 16 April. Best of the best Etihad Airways was voted ‘Airline of the Year’ at this year’s British Travel Awards, in recognition of its tremendous growth, product and service innovation and world leading customer service. One of the key highlights of 2008 for Etihad Crystal Cargo was shipping more than 180 Pablo Picasso masterpieces from Paris to Abu Dhabi for the world renowned artist’s exhibition in the UAE’s capital city. Etihad’s eagerly anticipated move to its new headquarters is set to begin in 2009. The complex, which also includes a training academy, will form a new nerve centre for the airline close to Abu Dhabi airport. First international cadet pilots join Etihad programme Etihad’s first group of international cadet pilots has started training in the UAE. Containing cadet pilots from countries around the world including Hungary, Canada and the United Kingdom, the international group runs alongside Etihad’s highly successful Emirati cadet pilot programme. The 7,800 sq metre building is part of a three centre-complex near Abu Dhabi airport. The complex also houses the Etihad training academy, which is already in use, and the nearby Al Abraj office and residential development. The successful cadets joined Etihad after completing a comprehensive selection process and have embarked upon the 18 month training course at Etihad’s training academy at its Abu Dhabi home-base and at the Horizon International Flight Academy in Al Ain. Once the move is complete, more than 600 staff will be based at the new head office. Captain Richard Hill, Etihad Airways’ executive vice president operations, said: “The arrival of our first intake of international cadet pilots marks the latest development in the growth of the pilot community here at Etihad where UAE nationals will now learn to fly side-by-side with other nationalities from around the world. Graduate managers spend 18 months on the course which involves a combination of classroom learning and handson training. 3,000 14 The new headquarters, shaped like an aircraft wing, is expected to reach full occupancy by April 2009. 2007 2008 The programme culminates with trainees undertaking placements in Etihad departments where they learn about different aspects of the airline’s business, including customer service, sales and marketing, reservations, pricing and ticketing, network and schedule planning, finance and human resources. 15 Our sponsorships Sports sponsorship is a major part of Etihad’s marketing strategy and the growing association the airline is building with Formula 1 and other international sports is a key driver to reach a global audience. TM Etihad flies the flag Abu Dhabi Golf Championship Etihad’s successful sponsorship of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship continued in 2009. As well as flying the players, officials and their equipment to the UAE for the showpiece event in January, Etihad was involved in a series of promotional activities which once again brought international attention to the Championship and Abu Dhabi. Reigning 2008 US Masters champion Trevor Immelman takes part in the Etihad Airways “shot from the yacht” challenge at the Emirates Palace Hotel ahead of the Etihad-sponsored Abu Dhabi Golf Championship Harlequins Rugby Club With the inaugural Formula 1TM Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix taking place on 1 November Etihad has accelerated towards the starting grid by unveiling its latest wide-body Airbus aircraft in an eye-catching Formula 1TM livery. The specially painted Airbus A340-600 plane is part of a marketing campaign that will intensify in the months leading up to the last race of the F1 season. With the aircraft set to operate on Etihad’s services from Abu Dhabi to London, Sydney, New York and Toronto, the new livery will ensure that motor racing fans from around the world can share in the excitement of the UAE’s first ever F1 grand prix. The plane will also fly to other cities hosting Formula 1TM races, including Melbourne, to coincide with Etihad’s route launch there in March. Etihad Stadium Etihad’s sponsorship of the London-based rugby club, Harlequins, continues to benefit the local community in Abu Dhabi. In November last year, aspiring young rugby players were treated to first-class training sessions thanks to the inaugural Etihad Airways Rugby Schools. More than 400 Emirati and international children took part in the event with Harlequins’ star players Will Skinner (below) and David Strettle, an England international. Meanwhile, the Chelsea Soccer Schools is set to return to Abu Dhabi in February 2009 with former star players Marcel Desailly and Graham Le Saux hosting clinics with local youngsters. Anyone for tennis? Abu Dhabi’s first international tennis tournament the Capitala World Tennis Championships - took the capital by storm as Zayed Sports City filled up with thousands of tennis fans who came to watch the world’s best players in action including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and tournament winner Andy Murray (below). The famous Telstra Dome in Melbourne will be re-named ‘Etihad Stadium’ in early 2009. The fiveyear sponsorship is Etihad’s first major sporting sponsorship in Australia and will see the airline’s branding feature prominently inside and outside the stadium, including on perimeter signage and giant score boards. This sponsorship comes into effect on 1 March 2009 – the start of the Australian Football League (AFL) season - just weeks before the airline launches a non-stop, daily service to the Victorian capital. The 55,000 capacity stadium, opened in 2000, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne. 16 17 Our loyalty programme Etihad Guest is the airline’s award-winning loyalty programme. Launched in August 2006, it has more than 500,000 members worldwide, with more than 30,000 gold and silver level members.
