Awesome Autumn is here!
News from our CEO – Jim Buultjens.....
Dear friends,
We have some really good news. After a period of much anticipation, Fairhaven has
been approved to deliver post school and day programs under the program models
of Community Participation, Life Choices and Active Ageing programs on the Central
Coast and the Hunter. This is wonderful news for those who are part of Fairhaven
who don’t work every day and for any of our friends who might like to be involved in
activities of their choice. We are planning activities like cooking, menu planning,
music, bushwalking, painting and even a computer club. Details will be announced
soon. In the meantime you will need to check whether you are eligible for a funded
package. For more details please contact ADHC either on the phone number: 1300
205 268 or by e mail to: [email protected]
Our staff ideas day was held on 21 February and we shared news of the NDIS and
what it would mean for people with different abilities who need support. Some key
aspects of the NDIS are that:
1. All services provided will need to be person-centered and customer driven
2. People will be able to decide which service they would like to be supported
by – and of course Fairhaven should by now be your best service provider!
3. The Insurance scheme will work in a market-driven industry with several new
service providers competing to support you.
4. Block grant funding for organizations will be phased out commencing in
2015. This means that Fairhaven will not be getting its money directly from
Government. The Government will pay the money to you and you will need to pay
Fairhaven to support you.
5. All ADHC operated services will be transferred to NGO’s by 2016
Thank you to all staff who attended and for the great ideas that were suggested on
the day. It was a productive and fun day with a number of interesting service ideas
that were discussed including - Fashion shows; Cafe at Pt Clare; Assisted travel; Lawn
& garden care; In home support and many more.
Easter is around the corner – the most important day in the Christian calendar - I
wish you all the best for a very happy and safe Easter.
Best regards, Jim

Farewell to Brooke Ross from
Tuggerah who leaves us after
10years; moving north to enjoy a
new life with her family. We’ll
miss you loads Brooke.
A note from Ken McDonald;
Now that I am retiring I can look back at the 37years that I have
spent in the disability services field and I can reflect on the huge
changes that have occurred in the industry.
In the early days we were working in what was then called
“sheltered workshops”. Most of these were located in schools,
churches, halls etc. The “shelters” were run by parents &
volunteers and if they were really lucky they had a few paid
staff.
Most activities involved the making of arts and crafts, woodwork
or other things that were generally hard to get an income from.
Government funding was very difficult to obtain so most services
became charities to enable some sort of fundraising to be
organised. Fundraising programes where then and still are a
vital part of the exiting services.
The evolving of “shelters” into the ADE’s (Australian Disability
Enterprises) we see today, took a lot of dedicated and hard
working people.
Different governments came and went each time there was a
change in Government there seemed to be a change of rules.
These changes continued throughout the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s and
by the time we got to the year 2000 the goals had been moved
many times and the systems we put in place rarely caught up
with the changes.
Adapting to change is now an integral part of any service that
wishes to be viable.
In 2015 there will be major changes to the way services operate
and this will cause lots of challenges which will be overcome
with dedicated teams.
I have worked at Fairhaven for nearly 11years and in that time
the good has outweighed the bad. It has always been a privilege
to work with so many dedicated people and I wish everyone all
the best for the future and I hope that I will be able to visit
occasionally. Farewell and Thankyou......Ken.
WE WILL MISS YOU SO VERY MUCH KEN.
