All the news that’s
fittin’ to print . . . and
a whole lot that ain’t!
Howdy folks! This here’s ol’ Pete and Rosebud comin’ at
you again!
How’s everthing where you’ve been? Everthing’s purty
quiet up here. Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the young’uns gettin’
ready to do their Halloween trickin’ and treatin’. And there
ain’t enough young’uns up here no more to do much of that.
Most of the young families has moved off. You don’t even
see no cars on the road no more. I was tellin’ my mule Rosebud
the other day that this is prob’ly the only place in the country
where people still run out to see a car pass. ’Course I was
jokin’. We don’t actual do that, run out of the house I mean.
When we hear one comin’ we go out and set out on the front
porch. That way, whoever it is will think we was just settin’
out there when they happen to come by. ’Course that reasonin’
starts wearin’ a little thin when it’s 30 degrees and threatenin’
to snow.
But the young folks movin’ off ain’t the only reason there
ain’t that many cars comes up this way. It ain’t like Gump
Holler is between two towns and you’ve got to come through
here to get from one to the other. We ain’t between nothin’.
Not unless you count the crossroads down there at Silas’s
store and Bug Tussle over there on the other side of the
timber company woods. But there ain’t neither one big enough
to be counted as real places. There ain’t nothin’ atall over at
Bug Tussle, no stores or school or nothin’ like that. And the
only thing down at the crossroads besides Silas’s store is the
liberry and Miss Mayella’s Beauty Barn.
Well, there is one other thing. Part of the time there’s ol’
man Marbone’s vegable stand. He sets up and sells sweet
taters, beans, peas, arsh taters, pecans—whatever’s in
season—out of the back of his truck. Somebody asked him
why he didn’t bring a few punkins this time of year and he
said he didn’t like to handle ’em ’cause they’re heavy. Said
you can pick up a few taters at a time, a handful of peas, but
you can’t pick up half a punkin. He’s got a point. But he ain’t
down there all the time nohow. If the weather’s bad, he don’t
show up atall and when it’s purty weather, after he sells out of
whatever he’s got, he goes back to the house.
Besides ol’ man Marbone and them other places I’ve
already mentioned, there ain’t but two houses down there at
the crossroads. Two ol’ ladies lives side-by-side. You used to
see ’em out in their yards all the time. They got to be somethin’
of a. . . how do I say this? They was kind of a attraction.
People would come from all around and set on Silas’s porch to
see ’em. Or, to hear ’em would be a better way of puttin’ it.
Them two ol’ wimmin would stand out in their front yards for
hours at a time and holler at each other across the fence. And
they wasn’t sayin’ nice things, either. They hated each other
and would holler all kinds of ugly stuff.
Yeah, they used to put on real a show for everbody at the
store, but you don’t hardly ever see ’em no more. They’ve got
older and I reckon they stay in their houses most of the time.
Maybe they’ve mellered out some since they’ve got a few
more years on ’em. Or it might be that they’re not up to all the
fussin’ and fightin’ no more. It’s kinda hard to lean on a walkin’
stick with one hand and shake your fist with the other’un.
Besides which, if they’re anything like me they’ve prob’ly
forgot what they was mad about by now. But that don’t stop
some people. I’ve knowed a few that stayed mad for years
after they’d forgot what they was mad about.
It always seemed to me that them people over at Bug Tussle
was the worst’uns about holdin’ grudges. Believe me, you
don’t want none of ’em over there mad at you. They’ll stay
mad forever. That’s the way they treat each other, too. There
ain’t hardly none of ’em on speakin’ terms. I always thought
that was why Bug Tussle never ’mounted to nothin’. That’s
why there ain’t nothin’ over there. And there ain’t. No stores
or nothin’, just a few houses scattered along the road. It kinda
leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you get to thinkin’
about it. I mean, everbody’s got to pull together to make a
place prosper. And even then, if it’s a place stuck out in the
middle of nowheres like Bug Tussle is, it ain’t easy.
’Course the crossroads down here ain’t much better when
it comes to where it’s at. The main road that crosses Gump
Holler road here has got all the traffic. And there ain’t no sign
on it tellin’ you where you’re at. Cars and trucks go whizzin by
all the time without ever even seein’ the crossroads. Silas’s
store is there on the corner, but it faces this road, the one that
goes up through the holler here. To make it worser, the bushes
has growed up along the side of the storehouse, between it
and the main road. If you was goin’ along and didn’t know
where Silas’s store was, you’d have trouble findin’ it.
Somebody said somethin’ to him about it one time, about how
he ort to get them bushes cut outta there so people could see
the store from the road, but he said he liked it like that. Yeah,
he told ’em he didn’t want a bunch of strangers comin’ around
botherin’ him. Said they was too much trouble.
