Our 40th Anniversary celebration was, by all accounts, a huge success, thanks to the efforts and cooperation of lots of people. So this is a huge THANK YOU to the following: Mike Bridges and the cleanup crew Ted Berard and the COPS Mario Lopez and his grounds crew Bob Russell and the PDG security crew Jimi Tidd, for all the posters, flyers, etc., and for being in the dunk tank Chef Mark and his crew for the food Tim Fry and his crew for the food service And the following committee chairs: Ray Cole - entertainment Greg Goodheart - Food and beverage Carol Dobson - cleanup Bev McGill - games Don Risk - video The realtors and various clubs that provided food, entertainment and games during the Saturday festivities. And a very special shout out to Bobby Grassi. Without his tireless efforts and expertise we would not have had power and sound for any of the activities. The committee chairs were able to rely on many volunteers to make it all come together. So thank you all!!! I salute you all for a job well done. Ooooooops! I was WRONG!! Obviously, last month’s article was not my last. After five years of writing these articles, one would think that I would remember that they are written nearly one whole month before they are distributed. When I wrote that last month’s article (November’s) was my last, I computed that: The election results would be “official” on Saturday, December 1st. The “new” Board would elect their Officers, at their organizational meeting, on Monday, December 3rd. Therefore: The new President would write the article. That was great except ---- the article has to be submitted by December 7th, which scarcely gives the new President time to get acclimated. So---- I was wrong by a month!!!!! This is my last monthly article. Well actually, that’s not true either; this is not my last writing. The “annual Report,” which I will present “orally” immediately after the election results are announced, will be published in the January edition. But I promise --- that will be my last!!!! There are still a few “bugs” to work out of the system however. We seem to be experiencing some sporadic “sprinkler head” malfunctions due to a “voltage” drop in some areas. This has been identified as a “manufacturer” defect and is being tracked down to determine the cause and form a solution for its repair (yes --- this is a warranty issue – no cost to the Association). Another “bug” being worked on is the direction and nozzle pattern/flow of some of our “heads” adjacent to houses and streets. As we become aware of these issues, our Golf Course Superintendent, Mario Lopez, will send his crew out to make adjustments. PLEASE, if a sprinkler head is malfunctioning, submit a written “Homeowner Comment Form” to the Association Office. We have had a number of occasions where a resident has had an issue with the new system and has complained to neighbors and friends, but has NOT contacted anyone from the Association Office. Again, please help us help you – contact the HOA with any “concern” you may have!!! The Association also incurred additional expenses, which were deemed essential for the new system to operate as “efficiently” and “effectively” as possible or were deemed to be fiscally prudent (would have to do the work sooner or later and doing so later would incur greater costs). The costs for the following “addendums” were also incurred: $19,000 on GPS “As-built” maps $13,500 on CVWD identifying tags $14,922.80 for the dismantling of the old system $6,600 for the installation of a new “Z-pipe” $3,287 for the installation of a new “filter line.” $989 for the re-routing of a 4” water main from the golf course to the Maintenance Bldg. $1,025 for the connection of the new system to the Frank Sinatra perimeter The “addendums” costs were: $59,324 The expenditure for the project and addendums came to: $1,288,288.98 Including the architectural fees of $41,300 ($3,500 of which was charged to last fiscal year), the entire expenditure for the project, including addendums and design totaled: $1,325,589.98 The total amount of Reserve Funds Page 6 Palm Desert Greens News Bulletin December 2012 expended was $175,000 less than was through December. budgeted for this fiscal year. Our income was up over $15,800 and our expenses are down $67,000 from July through September; $82,000 under budget. 40th Anniversary: What a great weekend! Mr. Patrick Evans was a most gracious and entertaining “host” for the festivities. “Heat-wave” put on a show that will not only be long remembered for its entertainment, but gives renewed hope for the future of our country (what a great group of talented and polite young people). Kudos to the “Anniversary Committee” whose numerous members toiled and sweated the details to put on “one-greatshow!” I know I am going to forget to recognize some of the people who helped organize this event, but for the sake of at least recognizing most of those who dedicated so much of their time so that the rest of us could enjoy, THANKS go to: Chairman Dennis Hanks, Sara McCallum (Tennis Club), Liz Dixon, Mal Sinclair (Finance), Ray Cole (Long Range), Carol Dobson (Maintenance), Greg Goodheart (F&B), Robert Grassi (Security & Audio), Erma Hanks (New Dimensions), Beverly McGill (Clubhouse), Lynda Raible (Golf), Marjorie Teaney (Landscape), Jerry Thomas (ARC), Roberta Reynolds (GM), Sara Fenimore (Asst. GM), Jimi Tidd (Graphics), Tim Fry (F&B Mgr.), and Chef Mark Scher. There were scores of volunteers who donated their time and efforts as well. From the COPS who directed traffic, to the arcade workers, to the “dunktank” swimmers, to the clean-up people, to the people who set up the tables, chairs and stage curtains, to the “golf chip and putt-putt” workers: They are all most deserving of individual recognition. However, I could not begin to list them all. Know this – you are all very much appreciated!!!! Until next we meet and communicate, Be well, Ken EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION CONTRIBUTION Enclosed is my contribution for $ ______________________________ Member Name: ____________________________________________ Unit: _______ Lot: Employee Appreciation Contributions are distributed to Palm Desert Greens Employees who work “Behind the Scenes” for our members and funds are distributed during the holiday season. Bob still has a selection of sweatshirts and shirts commemorating the 40th Anniversary. As always, there is a wide variety of jackets, golf bags, clubs, stocking stuffers, and golf balls. All in all, Christmas shopping should be easy, and you won’t have to battle the crowds. Don’t forget to use your sweeps credits! Roberta Reynolds Welcome back! Wasn’t that a wonderful 40-Year Anniversary celebration? The Ad Hoc Committee provided an entire weekend of entertainment, in spite of the cooler temperatures. Thank you all for your hard work. There was so much going on. Accolades continue pouring in. Congratulations to Dennis Hanks, and his Ad Hoc Committee all for making this event so memorable. Speaking of the holidays, I want to thank those of you who have already sent in checks for the Employee Holiday Fund. In some associations, holiday gifts are included in the monthly assessments. Ours depend upon the generosity of our residents. Please remember how hard these employees work to make you proud that you are a member of Palm Desert Greens Association. So be patient, keep up with the group ahead of you, carry a selection of clubs to your ball, and a sand bottle for filling divots. Have you heard the new starter whistle? The Golf Shop’s new whistle was tested from all distant parts of the course, and we believe it will let you know when it is okay to start morning and afternoon play. Bob Breidenbach will also be working with Security to designate a series of sounds to warn golfers to leave the course in case dangerous storm conditions exist. The Golf Shop is well stocked for the season. Brightly colored shirts, shorts, crop pants, and skorts adorn the racks and tables. Two crews will be working to expedite the renovation by December 28, 2012. Traffic will be diverted for short periods of time. Please watch for street delineators and flagmen, and use the back gate if at all possible. Note should be made that the final clean-up and restoration of the easement areas may extend into the first part of January. All in all, this is a much-welcomed, overdue project. Thank you all for your patience. Chef Mark and Tim have prepared a new menu, including revisions of some of your favorites as well as adding new, lighter items. They have played upon the 40-year Anniversary theme, incorporating early pictures of PDG. They will change the theme and some of the offerings as they work through the year, but I think you will find the selections tempting, and the new look nostalgic. Page 7 While Board Candidate Applications require attendance of at least eight Board Meetings, Board Members will soon be immersed in Committee Meetings, study sessions, home study, etc. The demands upon Board Members are sometimes overwhelming, and certainly time consuming. Page 8 Palm Desert Greens News Bulletin December 2012 Security Report By Chief Russell First and foremost, I want to wish all of you, Happy Holidays! It seems that I spend more time with the people of Palm Desert Greens than I do with my own family and neighbors. In my position here, I have the responsibility to protect you and provide a safe environment for you to enjoy your lives here in this great community. I also get the opportunity to be a confidant for those who need one, and a problem solver for those who do not have nearby family or friends. All in all, I can say that I have a substantial involvement with the people of PDG. Not all of it was serious in nature, unless you were one of the victims. In some cases the criminal received some help from the victim. Keys were left in the vehicles that were taken. Golf Clubs were left out in plain sight while the victim was gone for several days. Doors and/or windows were left unsecured, both in houses and cars. I take these crimes seriously and take whatever steps I can take to catch the culprit and recover the stolen property. You all can make my job a lot easier by making it more difficult for the criminal to take your things. You can still enjoy the comfort of living in one of the safest communities in the Valley. It is not my wish to make you afraid that someone is out there waiting to take your things. My wish is that you stay aware that there are people out there that will take advantage of you if you give them the chance. One thing I would like to caution you about, is leaving mail in your mailbox overnight. It is better and safer to put your outgoing mail in your box in the morning. There are people that are wandering around the streets at night, and “Lead them not into temptation!” It might also be a good idea to take your keys out of your golf carts when they are not being used. It may be enough of a deterrent to ward off any would-be thieves. I say this because when we had those golf carts taken, other carts were searched for what I believe to be keys for the cart. The one cart that was recovered, had the ignition switch in the “on” position, but the key was not in it. The other had the keys left in the ignition. With the increased traffic and traffic problems, with all the street work that is diverting the regular flow of vehicles, it is important to be careful, and careful of the actions of others. Speed has always been a major concern for all of you, as well as Security. The results of a speeding vehicle can be traumatic if someone is injured because of the diminished reaction time of the driver. In the 14 years since I started here, there have been several accidents resulting in property damage. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no fatal accidents in PDG, until recently. A small dog, that got out of its owner’s yard, through no fault of their own, was struck and killed by what was believed to be a speeding vehicle. As you all know, this is similar to losing a child of your own. During this Holiday Season, let’s keep it the Season to be Jolly. (Tim Fry, Chef Mark and the restaurant staff do a great job.) Attendees partied in incredible costumes or regular people clothes and it was exciting and fun for everyone. The costume contestants promenaded around the dance floor in such a large crowded circle that you had to be very attentive to distinguish each participant. The most amazing costume contest winners were Jim and Linda Soares, Michael Gray, Ken and Carol Dobson, Mark Carlson, and Shannon Preuss. Exceptional vocal and instrumental dance music was provided by Jimmy Street and the Two Ghouls. Entertainment Chairman, Lela Buffington, taught a floor full of eager dancers the Monster Mash, with moves such as the scissors, the mummy walk, monster walk, dummy move, in and out, driving the car, werewolf, and the breaking of chains and you just had to see it to believe it! The popular 50/50 drawing awarded 6 ticket holders $50 prizes. The November 13 General Meeting was a special tribute to our Veterans. Viet Nam War Veteran and Author, Ted Pannell spoke on his service experiences. His book, “Vietnam Stories - Dreams to Nightmares,” was available for purchase and if you didn’t get a copy, call Ted for one. President, Beverly McGill, recognized each Veteran in attendance with gratitude for their service and then attendees joined together singing patriotic songs. Talented concert violinist, Eric Frankson, entertained the group. He had previously impressed us when he played for New Dimensions with the John Stanley King Band. If you are not attending the monthly General Meetings, you are missing out on information about the Club’s activities and accomplishments, followed by excellent free entertainment and an enticing assortment of refreshments. Norm and Paula Koster made the coffee and managed the refreshments and volunteers supplied the treats. We will appreciate everyone who enters the Golf Cart Parade on December 8. Entrants should line up in the Clubhouse Parking lot at 12:00 AM and the Parade will begin at 1:30. It gets longer and more elaborate every year. Ice cream and cookies will be served after the parade, in the Clubhouse dining room. Please bring toys for the Salvation Army Toy Drive. The 2012 Festival of Lights and the Golf Cart Parade will be called, “Let’s have a Kandy Kane Christmas”. Pick up entry forms in the Administration office. The Festival of Lights contest winners will be announced at the General Meeting on December 11. Make your plans to celebrate New Years’ Eve at the “Snowflake Ball”. This is our most elegant event of the year and a memorable way to usher in the New Year. You will dine on Lake Superior White Fish or Filet Mignon Oscar and dance to music played by Disc Jockey, Michael Farber, of Music Media. Erma Hanks and Carol Dobson will sell tickets on the Clubhouse patio on December 1 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. This event quickly sells out. Remember that attendees, who wish to sit together at any event, must buy all of the tickets at the same time or they will be seated with other party people at the table they are assigned. Page 22 Palm Desert Greens News Bulletin December 2012 Artist of the Month Don Senter Snow Bird Don Senter, Summers On Camano Island, in Washington state. Don began painting three years ago, following a long career in the private practice of law. He says he continues to switch brain lobes. Don sees humor in much of life and seeks to record it on canvas. He uses his pen and paintbrush to warp time, space and color to change reality to his liking. The Palm Desert Greens Art Club is proud of the fact that it is as old as the Palm Desert Greens community itself. Art Club President, Nancy Whelan, points out that her mother was a member 40 years ago, when it all began. Don was asked by Art Club members to make his offering, as Artist of the Month for December, a memorial to PDG’s 40th birthday. His cartoon - painting, titled “1972 - the early settlers reach PDG” is that Memorial. Don zanily depicts a ‘49er prospector’s dinner being interrupted by flying golf balls as the first settlers of Palm Desert Greens move in. To enjoy all the humor in the painting it must be viewed close-up. Don’s work will be displayed in the Clubhouse throughout the month of December . On another administration note, Membership Chairman Al Bayly reminds all Members to be aware that renewing your Membership after Nov.30 will cost you $60, to include the assessed $10 for late payment. Continuing the subject of Dues, the SCGA has increased their bill for each SCGA Member by $3 for the upcoming year. Be assured that our Club Officers have focused on the issues of our income vs our expenses for the last several months. If you attended the November 20 General Meeting for all Club Members, you heard Treasurer John Fox address that subject. Like everything else these last several months, costs keep going up without any appreciable increase in income. Changes may well be required in both areas. Finally on Administration, Dick MacDonald has succeeded Bud Dohm as PM Sweeps Chairman. Thank You Bud, for stepping in; and Welcome Aboard, Dick. There are photos of all your Officers on the outside West wall of the Golf Shop, to help us all to recognize them and their positions. Let’s talk about Golf and other fun times together. Our Welcome Back, and/or Season Kickoff, was a BBQ good time event, shared among about half of our 400 plus Membership on November 7th. Social Chairman (and Master Chef) Alex Smutkoff masterminded the event, including the good times, good food, good weather - the whole enchilada (whoops - the whole bratwurst) ! Other Member Cooks were Jim Tatum, Jim Olson, Gary Druckery, and Immediate Past President Dick Dill. Current President Ken Gordon piped in some C&W music to liven the festivity; Membership Chairman Al Bayly took up a collection (of dues); and a whole crew of Members, including Golf Liaison Member at Large Doug Hodson and Vice President John Coyle, helped with the clean-up. And as for Golf, the annual Turkey Shoot is behind us; and the Ham Shoot comes up on December 12th, preceded by the first Tournament of the year, the Eclectic, on December 8 and 9. Bonded and Insured Club officers were also introduced; VP, Fran Burgess – Secretary, Sue Davis – Treasurers, Belva Meanor and Doreen Heffron. Then came dinner: Mark’s short ribs were nothing short of amazing, as well; Tim’s origination and attention to detail made it a splendid experience. Did you see Gus and his girl friend in the last newsletter? They too enjoy the occasion. Now it was prize time: Gayle Risk and Sylvia Pannell passed door prize to the winners. Ten prizes were given away, to include a grand prize of a unique belly-putter. Don Sender sold 50/50 tickets then put together five cash prizes of $25 that went to the winners. The twelve centerpieces were also given away, so several members went home happy. In closing, Don Risk reminded everyone that our first day of play is Wednesday, November 14th and will run thru April 10th, 2013. There is still time to join this exquisite club. Our PDG Realtors have started the ball rolling with their generous donations. Special thanks to the LaDonna Keaton team, George and Liz Higgins of Country Club Realtors, Lola Breeze, broker, Ron Nielson and Jackie Wood of The Greens Real Estate and Suzie Napoli of PDG Realty. New Dimensions has again come through, and will provide a continental breakfast for the golfers. What would PDG do without their support through the year?! As mentioned in previous articles, we have an exciting project underway to help raise funds for our designated charity. It is hoped that as many donors as possible will be a part of our “Commemorative Block Campaign”. This is a great way to honor loved one’ and friends, celebrate a special occasion or create a memory. The blocks/bricks will be available for a donation of $150.00 and may be inscribed with up to 16 characters. The blocks will be set into the ground at the entry to the 1st tee (replacing the blocks that are there now). An unveiling and dedication of the area will be held the day of the tournament. Applications and questions regarding purchase of the blocks may be obtained from the tournament chairmen. The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2013. Our 1st raffle prize was received from Debbie LeBlanc, so we hope that many more donations will follow. Popular items include gift cards/certificates, golf get-a ways, golf bags/clubs to name a few. Big ticket items are also welcome-how about a TV, laptop or a $100 bill?! Again, please contact any of the chairmen if you are willing to donate or solicit donations. Unfortunately, the big “C” affects so many from all walks of life. It would probably be safe to say that almost every resident in PDG has been touched in one way or another by this terrible disease. Needless to say, the financial burden for treatment can be overwhelming and devastating which is why we feel that the Desert Cancer Foundation is such a worthwhile entity. Their collaboration with the local medical community allows them to extend and enhance the value of every donation received. An overall donation of $30,000 yields approximately $180,000 in real cancer care. Just think of what we can do as a community to provide treatment for those that have no resources. Remember the date, March 17th,,,,, 2013. Proudly wear your knickers (green we hope!) and enjoy a fun filled day which will ultimately help so many. Golf is limited to 156 players and continental breakfast and lunch (prepared by our great Chef Mark) is included in the $55.00 entry fee. Cindy Youell will be leaving the group and will be sorely missed. On behalf of everyone in the PDG Women’s Golf Club, we send our love with her. One of the many important things discussed at the Welcome Back Brunch was the need to try to speed up the pace of play this year. In an attempt to get the 12:30 players out at 12:30, Bob Breidenbach will be “sounding his whistle” at 12:20. When this whistle sounds, all morning players must leave the golf course after completing the hole being played. This means that players may not play an extra hole, even if that hole is a player’s 18th hole. For scoring purposes, equitable stroke play rules will be followed. Also, we are asked to please play ready golf. This means playing ready golf at the tee box AND through the hole to and including putting on the green. And, please remember to record the scores on the next tee box, not by the green just finished. We will all benefit from these actions. Results will be reported in next months paper. Our team has a bye on November 29th, (also, no play on Thanksgiving). This year we will enjoy home board advantage on six occasions, traveling to our opponents five times. The District V Singles Tournament will be held December 4th to December 7th; and we expect to have 10 or more PDG players participate, as any Member of our Club can register. They do not have to play on Desert Shufflers or Hi-Ten to enjoy this competition. Details and signup sheets are on the shuffleboard bulletin board. Residents of PDGCC who have physical disabilities are invited to play Shuffleboard at a special time – Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This is a new program, introduced last spring, and re-instated on November 14th. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT: STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: (Called by Vice President Hanks) The Golf Course over seeding procedure will differ a little this year. Under normal circumstances, they would be dethatching the grass.
