The Rise of Duke Ellington
The first day of June brings Seth Kibel back to Edenwald.
Seth, one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind
specialists, will present The Rise of Duke Ellington,
chronicling his rise from the most inauspicious of
beginnings to become one of the greatest composers of
the 20th century. Find out how The Duke made the
transition from "hired help" to a pianist, composer, and
bandleader second to none. Recordings and live
performances by Seth on the saxophone, clarinet and
flute will keep this presentation as lively and exciting as
The Duke's music itself. See you there on Wednesday,
June 1 at 7:30 in the auditorium.
Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War
Pocket
Edenforum is pleased to welcome Dr. Kay Whitehead on
Monday, June 13 at 7:30 in the auditorium as she
presents her book Notes from a Colored Girl. In her book
she examines the life and experiences of Emilie Frances
Davis, a freeborn twenty-one-year-old mulatto woman,
through a close reading of three pocket diaries she kept
from 1863 to 1865. Dr. Whitehead explores Davis's
worldviews and politics, her perceptions of both public
1
and private events, her personal relationships, and her place in Philadelphia's
free black community in the nineteenth century.
Dr. Karsonya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead is Associate
Professor of Communication and African and African
American Studies at Loyola University Maryland; the
Founding Executive Director of The Emilie Frances Davis
Center for Education, Research, and Culture; a K-12 Master
Teacher in African American History; an award-winning
curriculum writer and lesson plan developer. She received
her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program, her M.A.
from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in International
Peace Studies.
Innocent: Confessions of a Welfare Mother
Edenforum is pleased to welcome Barbara Morrison on Monday, June 20 at
7:30 in the auditorium as she tells us her story about life on welfare.
Growing up in a prosperous neighborhood, B. Morrison was taught that poverty
was a product of laziness and public assistance programs only rewarded
irresponsibility. However, when her marriage soured, she
abruptly found herself an impoverished single mother.
Disowned by her parents and facing destitution for herself
and her two small sons, she was forced to accept the
handout so disdained by her parents and their world:
welfare. This dramatic memoir tells how one woman finds
and grasps the lifeline that ultimately enables her to
become independent.
Barbara Morrison, who writes under the name B. Morrison, is a Baltimore native
who is the author of this memoir and two poetry collections, Terrarium and Here
at Least. Barbara's award-winning work has been published in anthologies and
magazines. She conducts writing workshops, provides editing services, and (as
the owner of a small press) speaks about publishing and marketing.
Fact-checking in unusual times: The 2016 race for the White
House
How many times have you listened to a political candidate and said, along with
the comedian, Bill Maher: “I don’t know for a fact [that he/she is lying] I just
know it’s true”? PolitiFact is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of
2
claims by elected officials and others who speak up in American politics, from
small inaccuracies to “pants on fire” misstatements. Their “truth-o-meter” should
allow a more meaningful participation in the political
process. Edenforum is pleased to welcome Jon Greenberg
on Wednesday, June 22 at 7:30 in the auditorium to talk
about fact checking during this presidential race.
Jon is a staff writer with PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prizewinning fact-checking news service. Since 2011, he has run
claims from politicians, pundits, Facebook posts and tweets
through the patented Truth-o-Meter. Most recently, Jon has
helped launch PolitiFact’s partnership with Johannesburgbased Africa Check to assess statements tied to global
health and development.
He is a two-time winner of the Society of Professional Journalists investigative
journalism award, and has degrees from Johns Hopkins University, Syracuse
University and Harvard University.
First Dads
“What kind of a father is a man? The question is so basic and potentially
revealing of character, yet most presidential biographers barely discuss it. With
insight, grace, and wit, Joshua Kendall delves deeply into the fascinating and
often fraught relationships of presidents and their progeny. With meticulous
research, he draws connections between presidential parenting styles and
governing policies. Edenforum is pleased to welcome Mr. Kendall on Monday,
June 27 at 7:30 in the auditorium.
Joshua C. Kendall was born in New York City. He
received his BA (summa cum laude) from Yale where
he studied comparative literature. He also did graduate
work in comparative literature at Johns Hopkins. For
his excellence in reporting on psychiatry, he has
received national journalism awards from both the
National Mental Health Association (now Mental Health
America) and the American Psychoanalytic
Association. He lives in Boston where he has ample
opportunity to indulge his love of squash. He is currently
an Associate Fellow of Yale’s Trumbull College.

The Future of American Democracy in a Diverse and
Conflict-Ridden Environment
Edenforum is pleased to welcome Michael Reisch on
Wednesday, June 29 at 7:30 in the auditorium. Mr. Reisch
will discuss The Future of American Democracy in a
Diverse and Conflict-Ridden Environment.
Michael Reisch is the Daniel Thursz Distinguished
Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore, School of Social Work. A former Woodrow
Wilson Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, he has held faculty and administrative
positions at the University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of
California, Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, San Francisco State University
and the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and has been a visiting

Meet Helen Mullan
Meet Patricia Owens
A warm welcome to a gracious new
resident here at Edenwald, Helen
Mullan. At the end of April, she was
found to be quite settled in her
apartment, 413, and busy with
getting pictures hung and involved
with family members.
Patricia Owens was born in
Baltimore and graduated from Mount
Saint Agnes High School and Notre
Dame College where she majored in
math (because she liked it and it was
easy!) After college she worked for a
while at the Aeronautics Department
at Johns Hopkins and then went to
Germany for five years with Special
Services, a civilian organization that
works with the military. While in
Germany she was able to travel
extensively throughout Europe.
Helen Hiddlestadt was born in
Baltimore and attended Kenwood
High School. For five or six years
after that she worked for a dental
office and was responsible for
making dental appointments.
In 1944, just after the
war, Helen married Joe
Mullan. Helen and Joe
reared their children in
Stoneleigh where they
stayed until they were
grown. Believe it or not,
she has six children, all
born within ten years,
14 grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren. Five of the six
children live locally so, needless to
say, she stays busy with family.
Helen is delighted with her move to
Edenwald: her apartment and the
many people she has met. Helen
emphasized her continuing
involvement with her family while
enjoying the pool and meeting new
people regularly.
Marj Quigley
When Patricia came home
to Baltimore she worked for
the Red Cross and became
their Director of Youth
Services, which started a
blood donor program for
high school students as
well as a sign language
class and a deaf
awareness program. At the
time she was living in downtown
Baltimore. She then became head of
Public Relations for the Baltimore
Red Cross.
Patricia was briefly married and,
during that time, lived in Howard
County. Patricia does not have
children but has 10 nieces and
nephews. One niece, her namesake,
will be visiting from Sante Fe with
her French husband and Patricia is
looking forward to showing them her
apartment and Baltimore. She has a
nephew in Baltimore who comes to
visit her and a brother in
Charlottesville, Virginia.
5
Before moving to Edenwald, Patricia
lived in Charles Village. She was
involved in the Village Learning
Place which took over a closed Pratt
Library. Patricia enjoyed pottery, was
a member of the Potter’s Guild and
also did some painting. She likes
reading and will join the book club.
She also loves gardening and had a
flower box here even before she
moved in! Patricia had wonderful
neighbors in Charles Village and
hated to leave there but finds
Edenwald a remarkably friendly
community – residents and staff
alike.
We welcome this interesting and
active person to Edenwald!

Meet Shirley Kaufman
Shirley Kaufman, who just moved
into Apartment 1225 in the Terraces,
is no stranger to the Edenwald
neighborhood. Both she and her
daughter graduated from Goucher
College, Edenwald's next door
neighbor.
Ever since Shirley was one year old,
she has lived in Baltimore. She
married Joseph Kaufman, a
Baltimore man, and has two sons
and a daughter who grew up in
Baltimore. Now she has three
grandchildren.
Along the way, Shirley decided to go
back to college and went to
American University where she
received a Master's degree which
opened the door to a career in Public
Relations. She worked for
Nordstrom's and Johns Hopkins
Hospital where she was the Director
of Patient Relations, and then, spent
a busy 15 years at the Peabody
Conservatory Archives.
For recreation, Shirley enjoys music,
dancing and the theater. And
currently she is planning a July trip to
the Berkshires.
Meanwhile, she has settled happily
into her new home at Edenwald.

Ball Shooter
Alan Shecter won his way into the second round of the first Annual
Edenwald 8-Ball Billiards Tournament May 17, easily out—aiming
the likeable Bill Milner in the Edenwald Billiards Room. He will face
the veteran Frank Knecht on Thursday in Round Two.
Shecter pocketed all seven solids and called the 8—ball for a corner straight
shot to win. “There’s a lot of room for improvement in my aiming,” the modest
Shecter said. “I’m nearly 80 years old, but I am nevertheless the youngest
‘ball—shooter’ in the tournament,” he added. He asked to be careful when
spelling “ball—shooter”. “It’s ‘ball’, not ‘bull’, he said.

Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis) Vaccine
Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) are very serious diseases.
Tdap vaccine can protect us from these diseases. The Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) recommends that Persons aged 65 years and older (e.g.,
grandparents, child-care providers, and health-care practitioners) who have or
who anticipate having close contact with an infant aged less than 12 months
and who previously have not received the Tdap vaccine should receive a single
dose of Tdap to protect against pertussis (whooping cough) and reduce the
likelihood of transmission. For adults aged 65 years and older, a single dose of
Tdap vaccine may be administered in persons who previously have not received
the Tdap vaccine. The Tdap vaccine is offered at any local pharmacy like
Safeway, CVS and Walgreens, these pharmacies also allow walk-ins. Your
doctor’s office may offer the vaccine as well. You do not need a doctor’s order
to receive the vaccine. The cost of the vaccine is billed to your
Medicare/medical insurance; you may have a co-pay
associated with the vaccine. You can always ask the
pharmacist to check your insurance prior to getting the
vaccine to know in advance if you will have a co-pay.
Please let the medical suite or your doctor know if you
have further questions.

Flowerbox Garden Report
The Water Garden and the fountain are flowing and surrounded by beautiful
plantings. Many colorful caladiums and ferns have been planted around the
fountain. All of the boxes and planters have been designed and planted by the
resident gardeners and demonstration planters are filled with less familiar plants
and vines to both beautify the sitting areas and to help the gardeners learn
which of the new plants would do well next year. Two of these are pictured here.
Bidens or Beedance and Scabiosa or Pincushion plant.
