Connecting with Art and Culture in Alpena
Webster’s Dictionary defines art as “Something that is created
with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or expresses important ideas and feelings”. It is also the works and methods of
these creations. Defining why art is important and how it affects
our daily lives, however, is a little more challenging. For Tim
Kuehnlein, art is about the feelings that come from expression
and participation. “Art is a way of interacting with people and
ideas being translated in other forms,” he explains. “The interaction gives you feelings of connection and fulfillment. It enriches
your life.” Kuehlein says the impressive array of art and cultural
opportunities in Alpena are

In Alpena, there are plenty of opportunities to participate in arts and culture, with live theater (not one, but two
theaters, Kuehnlein points out), museums, galleries, concerts,
events and more. You can browse the gallery or find the artist
within you at a workshop at Art in the Loft or meet an artist
and see their work at the Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery.
You can experience the magic of a live theatrical performance
at Thunder Bay Theatre or explore the Besser Museum’s fine art
collection including paintings, prints, pottery and sculpture.
You can take a self-guided tour of Alpena’s historic homes and
buildings or enjoy a concert at the city’s waterfront band shell.
You can see and purchase the works of artists and artisans at Art
on the Bay – one of the region’s premier fine arts and crafts events.
You can listen to the soulful expressions of some of the best artists
anywhere at the annual Alpena Blues Festival. The list of ways you
can experience arts and culture in Alpena is almost as boundless
as the community’s love for it.
Kuehnlein is passionate about promoting arts and culture in
Alpena and has been involved in several projects to inventory and
promote them. “Arts, culture, history and the humanities have
always been here, but they weren’t on the radar,” he says. “Arts
and culture is a niche for our community, but not something that
we are known for on the outside.” One project, ARTown Michigan began as a local project but soon became an opportunity for
regional collaboration. The Artown Trail features assets from
Standish to Mackinaw City and is housed on the US 23 Heritage
Route web site.

Alpena Trails: Blissfully Uncrowded
A favorite trail of Mike Anderson’s reinvigorates him every time he follows the
familiar hills and turns on his mountain
bike. Each ride brings the same enjoyment
and release from thoughts of day-to-day life,
but there is always something new to notice
along the forested trail. Wildlife, plants and

even the changing seasons always make the
ride seem fresh. As much as he is comforted by the familiar, he
also enjoys discovering new trails. There is just something about
the thrill of not knowing what is coming around the next bend.
Anderson puts the word enthusiast in “outdoor enthusiast”.
With a laundry list of outdoor pursuits, it would probably be easier to list the things he doesn’t do. A student at Alpena Community College who works at Cabin Creek Coffee, Anderson spends
his off-time mountain biking, street riding, wind surfing, hiking,
inland lake fishing and ice fishing. It is what he does and what
his friends do. “People sometimes think of young adults today as
lazy people who are into video games and virtual stuff,” he said.
“A lot of my friends and I don’t have any interest in those kinds of
things. We are into the outdoors.”
Anderson was raised by parents that bike, run and crosscountry ski, so outdoor recreation was always a part of family
life. Volunteering time for the cause of trails is also a family affair. Everyone in the family is an active member of the Thunder
Bay Trails Association. The association was founded to promote
and protect non-motorized trail systems in the county for public
enjoyment, education and adventure. Volunteers groom trails at

Norway Ridge, Chippewa Hills and adjoining areas and host bike
and ski events. The Norway and Chippewa trails are easily accessible from town and are blissfully uncrowded. “There are a lot of
trails in Michigan, but the ones that I have ridden that are closer
to big cities have much higher traffic,” he says. “It can be hard just
to find a spot. It’s always a relief to come back home.”
Anderson says the abundance and accessibility of uncrowded trails, beaches, water, state land and forest are among the top
reasons he loves where he lives. “If you are an outdoors person,
Alpena is definitely a great place to be,” he remarked. Anderson
noted that the sports of windsurfing and kiteboarding are becoming more and more popular and the Alpena area offers some of
the best, if not the best, locations in the state. Mich-e-ke-wis Park
in Alpena and North Bay in Presque Isle are among the spots favored by locals. Anderson says thanks to its location, North Bay
is, ‘the best place to windsurf in Michigan’. Presque Isle is a peninsula, and at the point of Presque Isle Harbor, Lake Huron is on
one side and North Bay is on the other. The lay of the land and
water provide the optimum situation for steady wind…the ideal
condition for great windsurfing. Anderson says North Bay draws
enthusiasts from outlying states, as well as instructors and their
students from regional shops.
For Anderson, the “Up North Michigan” lifestyle is a great
one. “I love being out in nature and seeing wildlife,” he said. “It
is great getting out in the woods and leaving the world behind.
Once I get out in the woods on my bike, I forget about everything else and focus on riding. Any stress I might have had just
disappears. It’s like a breath of fresh air.”

I like Chippewa Hills because it has a
hilly terrain and is challenging.

I love the Alpena Bi-Path. It runs
through-out the city and makes it
easy to get around. It’s beautiful.
People can rent bikes at the Maritime
Center. Alpena is fortunate to have a
path like this.
NEST trail
Favorite Secret Spot: Rockport. This area is open to the
public, contains miles of trails and over a dozen sinkholes.
Trails are navigable, but are still being developed and
marked.
Favorite New Trail: The North Eastern State Trail (NEST)
runs from Alpena to Cheboygan. It has a crushed limestone
surface and can be used by snowmobilers, hikers, bikers and
equestrians.

Fishing Alpena: A Way of Life
Donny Hartman calls himself, “a working musician that
loves to fish”. That’s a very humble description for a man considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time and one of the
best fishermen anywhere. Hartman is an original member of The
Frost band…one of Michigan’s premier bands that sprang from
the gritty, heavy-guitar rock-and-roll that developed in Detroit
in the late 1960’s. The Alpena band recorded three albums, but
poor distribution and promotion by their record company caused
Donny Hartman shows off a prize catch.

bands like Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper and Grand Funk
Railroad.
Frost members eventually went their separate ways, but fans
of the Frost and members of the music industry never forgot the
band. The band released The Best of the Frost CD in 2003 and
there have been several jam-packed Frost reunion concerts over
the years. The Frost received some of the recognition due to them
with induction into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of
Fame in 2008.
Over the course of nearly 50 years, Hartman has never
stopped playing. He has released solo records and continues to
front the Donny Hartman Band. Donny’s shows include some of
the old favorites, but he also throws in some original tunes, some
R&B and even a little country. In addition to his reputation as a
musician, Hartman is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable fishermen in the area and works as an inland lakes fishing guide. “I love fishing the way that people love golf. If I could,

Michigan has four great lakes within its borders and more
than 11,000 inland lakes. Four of the twenty largest lakes are located in the Alpena area - Fletcher’s Pond, Hubbard Lake, Grand
Lake and Long Lake. The Thunder Bay River and numerous other
lakes, rivers and streams provide ample opportunities for catching a wide variety of species including bass, pike, walleye, perch,
crappie and bluegill. Hartman says one of the reasons he loves
living in Northeast Michigan is because it is an ideal location for
inland lake fishing. “We have an area that is concentrated with a
lot of good fishing lakes and streams in the immediate area plus
even more within just an hour’s drive,” he said.
Donny’s Favorite Lake: I like Grand Lake – I love the islands.
It is not as busy as other lakes and not overrun with wave
runners. The lake is never crowded, even on a hot day. And if
it is windy you can always tuck your boat out of the wind by
an island.
Donny’s Secret Fishing Hole: Lake Winyah. Easy access, no
water sports, but watch out for weeds. Great fishing for large
and small mouth bass, pike, walleye, blue gill, perch and
crappie.

Hartman’s lifelong pursuit of fishing began when his father
regularly took him fishing as a child. He believes that fishing
should be a family activity that is relevant to today’s overscheduled, electronic times. “Everybody is running around, families
are too busy and kids are disconnected,” he said. “Fishing is more
than something to do or a place to go…it is a place to go back to.
So many kids live in a virtual world, but nature is the real world.
Family time and being outdoors helps to ground kids in the most
reality there is.” For an easy family fishing adventure, Hartman

a fishing lake with no water sports…just nature,”
he said. “You can put a boat in 20 feet from shore
and catch fish all day. They have everything you

A restaurant, boat rental and bait and tackle are
all available on site.
Hartman’s music causes him to travel more
than he would like because it cuts in to his fishing time. But a life in Northeast Michigan surrounding his two passions – music and fishing
– is a great one. “I still love playing, although I
don’t really like to travel and stay in hotels,” he
said. “But when I get up on stage and start playing, I always get the same feeling of disbelief of
how fortunate I am. I can’t believe that I can do
this.”

Alpena’s “Little Red” beacon
Little Red is the only lighthouse within
the City of Alpena. The steel skeletal-style
lighthouse is viewable from Alpena’s boat
harbor and breakwall. Built in 1914, it
replaced earlier wooden structures which
guided ships to safe port since the late
1800’s. It was added to the National
Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Forty Mile Point Light does not mark a
significant port, but was built so ships

a lighthouse. The light is 40 miles sailing
distance from Mackinaw Point. Follow

Joseph S. Fay, one of 27 wooden ships that
sank during a fierce storm in 1905. You
can see about 150’ of her side wall resting

The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving accessible lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Built in 1840 by Jeremiah Moors
of Detroit, the harbor light operated until 1871 when the keeper
transferred to a new, taller, coastal lighthouse a mile to the north (the
New Presque Isle Lighthouse). Visitors can climb the hand-hewn
stone steps of the 30 feet tall tower for a panoramic view of the Lake
Huron shoreline and Presque Isle Harbor. The keeper’s dwelling serves
as a hands-on museum. Here, visitors can blow foghorns and examine
other interesting artifacts. They can also ring the bell from the Lansing City Hall clock tower and pose for the perfect photo opportunity
with head and hands in an old set of stocks. The buildings and park
grounds are open to the public daily, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., midMay through mid-October. A nominal fee is charged for tower climbs.

Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse

Thunder Bay Island is situated in the center of the Thunder Bay
National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron. In 1846, the first store in
Alpena County was built on the island to support a fishing community, which harvested twelve thousand barrels of fish. At this time, 160
inhabitants called the island home, and operated a fleet of 31 fishing
boats. The first light tower established on the island was constructed
in 1832, making it the second oldest light tower still standing on Lake
Huron. The station was placed on the National Historic Register in
1984. The lighthouse is not open to the public but can be viewed via
boat from the water.

Middle Island Light Station is located in Lake Huron, halfway between Thunder Bay Island and Presque Isle. There are 7 buildings on
the island, including a light tower, Keepers Quarters, an Oil House,
Tool Garage, a Fog Horn building and two brick privies. The light is
78 feet above low water and can be seen for 17 miles. Visitors can take
a day tour of the island or even spend a private night on the island in

Thunder Bay national marine Sanctuary’s great Lakes

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary preserves a national
treasure, nearly 200 historic shipwrecks in and around the bay. Lake
Huron’s cold, fresh water preserves many of these shipwrecks intact
and in water depths ranging from a few inches to 200 feet, making the
sanctuary a popular destination for divers, snorkelers and kayakers.
You can explore the history and archaeology of these wrecks at the
Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, the Sanctuary’s 20,000 square
foot river front headquarters. Exhibits on Great Lakes maritime history and shipwrecks include the “Exploring the Shipwreck Century”
exhibit, a 9,000 square ft. permanent exhibit where visitors can
experience elements of a traditional maritime museum combined
with a hands-on discovery center featuring life-sized recreations of an
historic Great Lakes schooner and shipwreck sites, artifact displays,
and interactive learning stations on technology, diving, and Great
Lakes ecology. Also featuring a sanctuary store, state of the art education spaces, high-definition theater, and archaeological conservation
lab, the admission-free Center is a great destination and the best place
to begin exploring Thunder Bay. Please call ahead for information on

Lake are open for public viewing. In and around the sinkholes you
can discover 400+ million-year-old Devonian Era fossils from when
the Great Lakes region was a prehistoric coral reef. Sinkhole exploration is “at your own risk” as the walls of these formations are unstable

Riverside Skate Park
Skateboarders and rollerbladers can try their skills at this free park

14 ramps and elements, including a half-pipe and a Mini Skate Park
designed for the beginning skater with ramps 3-4 feet high. Safety

Alpena Bike Park
This park is for BMX bikes only. The Alpena Bike Park is located at
Mich-E-Ke-Wis Park off of State Street. It consists of quarter-pipes, a
jump box and a grind box. New ramps recently added include more
quarter-pipes, center obstacle with stairs and handrail, bank ramps,
launch ramp, bench, barrier and grind rails. Safety equipment is
recommended, and bikers use at their own risk. The park is free and

The Alpena Snowdrifters Club is under contract with the MDNR to
sign, brush and groom 93 miles of snowmobile trail in the Alpena
area. There are presently three staging areas for snowmobilers to park

City Parks/Beaches
Duck Park and Island Park – Located within Alpena city limits at
the corner of US-23 and Long Rapids Road, Duck Park and Island
Park are located on a portion of the city’s 500-acre wildlife sanctuary. Cross a bridge to get to Island Park, which features nature trails,
fishing platforms, and 5 distinctly different ecosystems. Duck Park
offers fishing and a picnic area and provides a great vantage point for
viewing a large variety of bird species in the sanctuary area. Kayak
rentals also available.
Watertower Park Rain Garden – This rain garden helps the environment by absorbing runoff water. Rainwater soaks into the ground and
nourishes the native plants that populate the garden. The plants and
soil filter contaminants and prevent sediments from entering the river.
The garden is located along the river at the Ninth Ave. Bridge. Watertower Park also features a skate park and fishing deck.

Northern Lights Arena opened in 2003 as the result of a communitywide effort to build northeast Michigan’s first indoor ice arena. NLA
features figure skating, hockey and speed skating, and a number of

Arthur E. Sytek Park – Located on the Thunder Bay River at the
bridge on Bagley St. This one-half acre wildflower park was developed
by the Thunder Bay Watershed Council. Kayak/canoe launch site, a
barrier free fishing platform with a roof, picnic tables, off-street parking, and serves as a trailhead for the City’s Bi-Path.

Sanborn Park/Ossineke Beach – Located on Lake Huron at the end

Handicap accessible. Located in Ossineke on Ossineke Rd. across
from Dinosaur Gardens.
City Serenity Trails
Alpena Bi-Path – Approximately 18.5 miles long, the path travels
through several of Alpena’s scenic city parks and beaches along the
Thunder Bay River and Lake Huron. Parking is available at several
sites along the path. An excellent tour of the city by foot, rollerblade,
or bike.
Maritime Heritage Trail – This historically-oriented walking tour
along the Thunder Bay River in downtown Alpena begins at South
Riverfront Park (behind the Armory on Water Street), following the
river north, crossing over the Ninth Avenue Bridge, then following the
river south and ending at South Riverfront Park. The walk includes
boardwalk, interpretive signs, a new pedestrian bridge behind the
Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, and integrates a portion of the
city’s 18.5 mile Bi-Path. The overall objective of the trail is to demonstrate the importance of Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay River in
the development of Alpena and its unique maritime culture.
Tranquil Country Trails
Get outside and get into nature! Within moments you can be out on
your bike, riding the trails, hiking, jogging through pristine forest,
snowshoeing or skiing your stress away on these trails that cut through

Besser Natural Area – Twenty minutes north of Alpena this foot trail
winds through an area formerly inhabited by the people of the Village
of Bell. Explore the forest and find remains of historic buildings, a
virgin stand of white pine trees, a lagoon and beautiful beach.
Norway Ridge – Five miles south of Alpena, features ten miles of
forgiving, groomed terrain.
Chippewa Hills Pathway – Twenty miles southwest of Alpena, offers
a more challenging terrain. Over 14-miles of hilly, heavily wooded
terrain await you on this trail.

State Parks
Negwegon State Park

Mysterious, remote and undeveloped, Negwegon State Park is a
hidden treasure with 10 miles of hiking trails and one of the most
beautiful beaches on Lake Huron. Negwegon is located on US-23 12
miles north of Harrisville. To get to the park, take Black River road off
of US 23 to the east 1.5 miles, turn north on Sand Hill Rd. and go 2.5
miles, turn right or east at the Negwegon State Park sign and go 1.5
miles to the day use parking area. No services, back country camping
available.
Rockport State Park Recreation Area

Rockport State Park, Michigan’s 100th State Park, has over 4,237 acres
of land located on the shores of Lake Huron north of Alpena. The
property includes a deep-water protected harbor, an old limestone
quarry of approximately 300 acres, a unique series of sinkholes, the
Besser Natural Area, and a broad range of land types, vegetative cover,
cultural resources and recreation opportunities. At the harbor, the
DNR has a boat launch facility, and a small park with picnic areas.

Located 24 miles north of Alpena on US 23 North, this natural
area encompasses 5,000 acres of sand dunes, upland and marsh. In
Michigan, there are fewer than 50 remaining examples of “forested
wet swale communities” of this quality. The area supports one of the
largest known populations in the world of the federal and statethreatened dwarf lake iris, Michigan’s state wildflower. Situated along
7 1/2 miles of Lake Huron shoreline, this undeveloped park provides a
rustic retreat for hikers exploring the park’s six miles of trails. Park at
the trail-head off of US-23.

Elk, Gourmet Dinner, and Wine Tasting Experience
Just a short drive from Alpena you will stumble upon an adventure so unique you’ll
want to make sure you don’t forget your camera. Thunder Bay Resort in nearby Hillman is
home to Michigan’s only elk viewing carriage ride and gourmet dinner with wine tasting.
The experience is one-of-a-kind and has been voted a USA TODAY “10 Best.” There is
nothing else like it east of the Rocky Mountains. Step back in time to life on the frontier
in the mid-1800’s. The outing is literally over the river and through the woods in carriages
or sleighs drawn by massive Percheron draft horses to see elk in the resort’s 160-acre Elk
Preserve.
While you say hello to the elk, Grandma Jan is at the Elk Antler Cabin busily preparing a 5 course gourmet feast on 100-year-old wood cook stoves. Furnished in period
antiques and trophy mounts, the cabin is the perfect backdrop for dinner and a sampling
of wines from nearby Stoney Acres

Hands-on Maritime Immersion
Alpena is proud to be the home of the nation’s only freshwater Marine Sanctuary. Thunder
Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects an historically significant collection of shipwrecks resting on the bottom of Lake Huron. The wrecks tell the story of commerce on the Great Lakes and
the growth and development of our nation. Sea-worthy storms, rocky shoals, and unfortunate collisions
throughout the Shipwreck Century created a grave of
more than 200 shipwrecks on the lake bottom. These
wooden schooners and steel freighters are beautifully
preserved by the big lake’s fresh cold water and create a
magical and mysterious snorkel or dive experience. There are also many dry-land opportunities to
experience more than 100 years of maritime history.
Annually, more than 80,000 visitors pass through the doors of the Sanctuary’s interpretive facility, the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. Board the schooner Western Hope and crawl into
the captain’s bunk to get a feel for life on the lakes. “Swim” through the dive tubes and see what a
real shipwreck looks like from a diver’s perspective. View artifacts from the wrecks and learn how
they help piece together the puzzle of the Great Lakes shipping story. Before you leave don’t forget
to purchase your Alpena Shipwreck Tours tickets at the Center’s gift shop. The glass-bottom boat
Lady Michigan will take you out on the water so you can personally view some of the Sanctuary’s
beautiful shipwrecks. Located at 500 W. Fletcher St. in historic Old Town Alpena.
