Today, thanks to digital technology, universities can offer you
simplified access to a vast range of information on your ENT:
messages, timetables, notes, exam dates, bibliographical resources
(databases, online journals) and more.
This means the university adapts to your constraints and availability so you can study anywhere, any time.
Since 2008, 800 000 copies of these booklets have been distributed
to students from the 17 universities in Paris and Île-de-France. They
also present and explain the initiatives undertaken by Paris Îlede-France Digital University to help higher education institutions
develop their digital and online facilities.
We hope you enjoy discovering these digital resources. Please don’t
hesitate to contact us with any comments that might help us develop
and improve digital technology for universities: [email protected]

The Paris Île-de-France
Digital University
A Ministry of Higher Education
and Research project
In response to a call for proposals in 2003, 17 Digital Universities were established in France to promote the development of digital and online services
in public higher education. The UNPIdF project was
launched in 2006 in collaboration with the 17 universities of Paris and Île-de-France, which were
joined in January 2010 by the National Institute of
Oriental Languages and Civilizations (Institut
National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales or
INALCO), the National School of Computer Science
for Industry and Business (Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique pour l'Industrie et l'Entreprise
or ENSIIE), the PRES Paris Est and the Paris, Créteil
and Versailles CROUS.

Your student
multi service card
Take full advantage of your student life with
your multi service smart card. It is your
student passport, the access key to
university services and an e-wallet to make
shopping easy, all rolled into one.
At the start of the 2011 academic year, over
300 000 students in Paris and Île-de-France
received the multi service card. Sporting the Digital
University colours, this card combines different
services on a single device to improve your student
life, and is valid for 3 years.
A digital wallet
Equipped with the Moneo digital wallet, this card
allows you to pay for:
CROUS services: university restaurants and
cafeterias, etc.
university services: photocopies for classes,
personal photocopies and printouts;
any purchase of up to 30 euros in Moneoaffiliated shops, pay and display machines and
ATMs displaying the Moneo logo.
And many services to come
Your student passport
Your multi service card is above all a student ID
card. As well as attesting to your enrolment in an
institution, it gives you access to various reductions
related to your student status: for municipal
swimming pools and theatres, public transport
(Imagin'R rates), free entry to certain museums, etc.
A
4
This card will steadily be improved with new
services:
access to public transport (RATP, SNCF, Vélib) ;
access to certain areas that require authentication (libraries, research laboratories, parking,
etc.).
… and many other uses, yet to be invented
(Student Associations, ticketing, etc.)!
How does it work?
To pay for your meals at the university restaurant
or at a Moneo-affiliated shop, you first have to
recharge your card. There is no PIN number to enter
during payment; your card's digital wallet is debited
directly.
How do I recharge it?
By bank card: you will find Moneo recharge
terminals in:
university restaurant halls;
banks;
post offices;
telephone booths displaying the Moneo logo.
In cash: you can buy Moneo recharge cards in
university restaurants or in some Relay shops.
What is the maximum amount it can hold?
What is the maximum amount it will pay for?
The maximum amount your card can hold is fixed
at 100 euros. After recharging, you can pay for
purchases of up to 30 €.
IMPORTANT: Your card is valid for three years
DO NOT THROW IT AWAY AT THE END OF THE
YEAR! Each time you enrol, if your card has no
rewritable area, a sticker is provided to renew
its validity. Remember to update the information on the chip at one of the update terminals
available in your university.
What should I do if I lose it, have it stolen,
or have a problem using it?
You should immediately contact your university's
multi service card office: find contact information
on the website:
http://universitenumerique-paris-idf.fr/carte

The Computer
and Internet Certificate
A national certificate
The C2i level 1 attests to your skills in office
automation and information retrieval and to your
capacity to communicate, inform and work collaboratively. It also attests to your knowledge of the
rights and responsibilities of Internet practices. You
can work towards it during your undergraduate
years at university.
The C2i1 is based on a national benchmark established by the Ministry. The certification includes
a practical test on a computer and a theoretical
test in the form of multiple-choice questions. For
more information: http://c2i.education.fr. All the
universities in the UNR offer training for C2i1
certification; at some it is compulsory.
An essential certificate
in today's world
Students who take the C2i can:
use the appropriate techniques to study smarter;
use the university's digital environment regularly
and with confidence;
surf safely on the web and benefit from online
services with full awareness of the implications.
A
8
The C2i1 contributes to success in studies, exams
and competitive entrance exams (IUFM or teacher
training college, etc.).
The C2i1 is a major advantage for job seeking - a
highlight of your CV. It replaces the vague notions
previously referred to in the Computer Skills section and is becoming a popular criterion for hiring in
both the public and private sectors.
The C2i level 2
While the C2i level 1 is general purpose, the
various C2i level 2 are discipline-specific and are
taken at Master's level. They are designed to be
career-related, as evidenced by the list of different
C2i2s currently taught at university: C2i2e teaching
professions, C2i2mi legal professions, C2i2ms
health professions, C2imi engineering professions,
C2i2mead environment and sustainable development professions. Note that the C2i2e will be made
compulsory for student teachers at the start of the
2012 academic year n

My digital
university
The new university website was inaugurated in January 2011,
marking the launch of a series of new digital services and
resources that are gradually enriching Paris 8's existing ICT
system.
These developments are all designed primarily with a view to
fostering the success of your studies and supporting you
throughout your university experience, in a number of ways:
giving you online access to educational and bibliographic
resources, keeping you informed about the institution's
administrative, scientific, cultural and sporting news, providing
you with open access IT equipment and wireless internet
access on campus, and more.
This guide presents a large number of the university's
online and digital facilities. Some services will be
established during the year, so don't forget to activate and
check your email account to keep informed of all the new
developments you can use and enjoy.

Online accounts
To access most of the university's digital services, you must first have activated your digital
account.
Activate your online account
• As soon as you have completed your enrolment, you can activate your account
1. Go to http://compte-numerique.univ-paris8.fr
2. Identify yourself using the information given on your student ID card (student number and personal identification number that appears on the detachable flap).
3. Memorise your username* and password.
4. If you lose or forget your password, it is always possible to repeat this procedure with the same
information.
A
10
* The username is often made up of the first letter of your first name followed immediately by your last name.
Sometimes, if a username has already been assigned, it may be followed by a numerical suffix (02, 03, ...).
The username may also be called a "login".
Your unique username allows you to connect to all the resources on offer, so it is very important!
Student email accounts
• You have been provided with an email address:
[email protected]*, which will
be essential throughout the duration of your studies,
particularly for receiving course-related and administrative information, important information during elections,
and for keeping up with the scientific, cultural or sporting activities and events going on at the university.
Check your inbox
• Access to your email account requires the username and password you obtained when you activated
your online account (see page 10).
• Check your inbox and read your email by connecting to:
https://webmail.etud.univ-paris8.fr
* In the rare event that someone else has the same name, you may be given a numerical suffix (02, 03…) after your
name.

The Digital Work Environment
(ENT)
During the 2011-2012 academic year, Paris 8 University will be providing you with a digital
work environment (espace numérique de travail or ENT), which will make it possible for you
to access online, through a secure connection, a whole range of the institution's digital
resources, tools and services.
A roaming office
You will be able to access your ENT at any time, from any computer with an Internet connection, on or
off the university premises, by authenticating with your username and password.
A personalized area
To simplify access to your information, you will find on the ENT only those services relevant to you
personally, to support you throughout your studies.
Digital services accessible on the ENT
Other than a learning and news platform, most of the digital services presented in this guide will eventually be accessible on the ENT, which will grow progressively.
You can already start using RESO8 – an online system to be used in tandem with the tools and support
provided by SCUIO-IP (the career guidance office) – to look for internships, student jobs and graduate
jobs... and transition from university to working life.
Access the ENT by connecting to:
https://ent.univ-paris8.fr
A
12
Podcasting
Building on its experience in open and distance learning (formation ouverte et à distance or
FOAD), during the 2011-2012 academic year Paris 8 University will establish a podcasting
service, designed to complement and support your courses and to provide information on
scientific and cultural events.
Permanent access to portable information
Podcasting will allow you, via the Internet, to read or download audio or video files on a computer, as well
as to transmit them on your portable audio player so you can use them whenever and wherever you like.
Development of podcasting at Paris 8
To begin with, recordings will concern lectures or events that take place in the lecture theatres.
Subsequently, on request from academic staff, they will be extended to the main classrooms.
Access podcasts by connecting to:

The digital library
The digital library was launched on 1 March 2011. It aims to develop and promote
bibliographic collections that can be used for research studies, digitizing the material
to ensure it is protected and freely accessible.
Items come from both the library collections and Paris 8 research teams.
• The first corpus online concerns the history of the university since its establishment over forty years ago,
from Vincennes to Saint-Denis: filmed speeches by sociologist Maria-Antonietta Macciocchi, sound
recordings of film-maker Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1970s political demonstrations and leaflets by Michel Foucault and Alain Badiou.
The travel journals of geographer Jean Dresch, who bequeathed all his scientific archives to the library,
have also been scanned.
• These collections include manuscripts, posters, videos, photos and more, and are assembled on a
platform that can be searched through the bibliographic portal or directly at the following address:
http://www.bibliotheque-numerique-paris8.fr/index.php
• You will also find the full texts of over
200 theses defended at Paris 8 since 2006

Users' rights
and online identity
Online identity
Each Internet user has and is responsible for an
"online identity". This includes the information you
have entered into your profiles, your posts and
comments (on blogs, for example) and the traces
you leave on the websites you visit [wikipedia].
How can the university help you manage this online identity?
Practical experience of group work systems at
university ensures students are used to working
with others remotely (circulating news and
information, e-learning, communities of practice,
professional communities).
You are encouraged to describe your activities and
promote your skills and career plans. You might
even build an institutional web page on one of the
university sites and participate in the alumni
network.
In concrete terms, you become the strategic force
behind your own online professional identity. You
participate in private and public groups, social
networks (Viadeo, LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter,
for example), websites and perhaps in internal
networks. Through all these activities, you knowingly provide the information of your choice to raise
your profile and advertise your skills.

Intellectual property
Users of software or digital resources must be
aware of and respect the principles of Act 92-957
of 1 July 1992:
respect the licences of software used;
do not illegally copy or recover digital works
when unauthorized by their licences;
comply with anti-plagiarism rules when writing
documents (dissertations, presentations, etc.).
The university's obligations
Before using any personal data, the university must
make a declaration to the Commission Nationale
de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL). This
organization is responsible for protecting privacy
and individual or public liberties within the context
of ICT. If a user respects the digital users' charters,
the university must not conduct any investigation
against him/her.
The university must test passwords chosen by
individual users and inform them in case of security
risk.
Managers of information systems are bound by a
strict policy of confidentiality.
Copyright is defined in French law in such a way
that a "work" entitles its author to exclusive intellectual property rights "by the mere fact of its creation" (Intellectual Property Code, articles L111-1
and L111-2). So be vigilant and respect documents'
copyright.
The right to quote and
the education exception
The right to make short quotations is an exception
to the use of works placed under copyright (article
L122-5). It is possible to quote a work, as long as
the author and source are clearly stated and the
quote illustrates an argument.
Quotation for educational use is a particularity
(article L122-5-3) that applies only for the purpose
of educational illustration. Refer to the article to
find out the limits to this exception.
Software licences
Authorizations and prohibitions related to use of a
software programme are set out in its licence.
This document lists the rights accorded to users:
the right to run the programme;
the right to copy and distribute the programme;
the right to modify the programme;
the right to study how the programme works n

8, 11, 12, Paris-Dauphine, Versailles-Saint-Quentin and Evry
Val d'Essonne
Questions are sent through the ruedesfacs.fr
website and receive an email reply within three
working days. However, a longer research period
may be necessary for unusually complex questions.
Replies always specify the research method used
and, if necessary, reference tools which might be
useful for further consultation (encyclopaedias,
library catalogues, books, electronic resources,
etc.). Rue des facs can also provide bibliographical
references (up to ten references), but does not
handle entire bibliographies.
